Solar Thermal
A Few FactsA solar thermal solution will provide a typical UK household with 50
to 60% of their Domestic Hot Water in a year. In the summertime
this will be as high as 100% meaning that the boiler will never have
to fire up saving both energy and money. In the winter a lower level
of energy is produced by the sun, so a boiler is also needed to
provide energy to heat the domestic hot water.
It’s a common misconception that solar thermal systems only work
when the sun is shining. Solar thermal systems work with diffused
radiation, so even on a cloudy day you will still get a good level of
energy from the sun to heat your hot water.
It doesn’t matter where you live in the UK, Solar Thermal will
still provide you with domestic hot water, whether you live in
John O’Groats or Lands End.

What Size System Do I Need?A Clearly Solar system should always be sized by a qualified solar
installer, but to give you an idea of what you need please see the
chart below.

Maximum number of persons inhousehold
Household average daily hotwater usage Up to 100l 80l to 120l 100l to 140l 120l to 180l

Cylinder Size*
Basic Guide to System Sizing
The panels collect energy from the sun which heats the fluid in the
solar panel.
When the fluid in the panels is hot enough, the pump station
circulates the hot fluid around the system
The hot fluid is pumped around the coil at the bottom of the twin
coil cylinder and heats the potable (or mains) water held within the
cylinder for domestic use.
The solar controller is the brains of the operation, managing the
solar system during daylight hours, enabling you to time your hot
water, just like a heating programmer, and measure the amount of
energy you have gained from the sun.
If the temperature sensor in the cylinder detects that the solar panel
hasn’t collected enough energy to heat the hot water to the
required temperature, that’s when the boiler will fire up, heat the
top coil of the cylinder and top up the temperature of the hot water
so that it comes out of your taps at the temperature needed.

In-roof installation
Clearly Solar Systems | Key Components
6
Flurosorb Flat Plates
The Flurosorb flat plate (part of the Clearly Solar system) gives you,
high efficiencies from a large absorber area of 2.02m2, robust
construction from toughened glass and ultrasonic welding, whilst
the slim line frame gives it a total footprint of just 2.24m2 and at
43kg it is one of the lightest flat plates on the market.
Flurosorb flat plates can be installed both in-roof and
on-roof, horizontally or vertically, or fixed to A-frames and
mounted on a flat roof or in a garden. The neat design subtly fits
in with the roof and low protrusion making it well within the
threshold normally required for planning permission.
Construction:
• Brushed aluminium frame
• Grid absorber made of copper
• Solar glass thickness 4mm (tough and resistant to vandalism)
• Absorber ultrasonically welded and not soldered, suitable for
high temperature

Fluropro Controller
The Fluropro controller (part of the Clearly Solar system) is the real
brains of the operation, simple to use with a boiler domestic hot
water programmer and solar gain display to show how much
energy has been collected from the sun since the system began
operating. Intelligent functionality in the controller holds off the
boiler whenever there is solar gain to be had making fuel usage as
low as possible.
• Differential temperature control
• East / West system control
(additional collector sensor and
pump station connection)
• Solar gain display
• Temperature sensors
• Three channels (solar, boiler, auxiliary heating)
• Programmable boiler & auxiliary channels
• Easy wiring connections
• Solar gain modulation
• Boiler heating delay function (similar to optimum start)
7
Flurocyl Twin Coil Cylinder
Unvented, stainless steel and narrow enough to fit through any
standard airing cupboard door, the Flurocyl twin coil cylinder (part
of the Clearly Solar system) is a cylinder for all seasons.
To ensure that every last bit of the suns energy is used, the solar
gain modulation (working with the controller and pump station)
steadily pulses the solar fluid into the bottom coil of the cylinder,
evenly heating the domestic hot water and ensuring that the boiler
does not fire up until it really needs to.
The special construction of the coils inside the Flurocyl cylinder,
ensures that the top coil will reliably heat the top 2/3 of the cylinder
delivering high volumes of hot water during winter months when
there is less solar energy.
The Flurocyl cylinder is supplied with a thermostatic mixing valve
to mix cold water into the solar heated water as required and 3
thermal cut outs for the boiler, immersion and solar, all fully
integrated and approved.
• Twin coil Flurocyl cylinder fully compatible with all open vent
and sealed systems, including the full range of Glow-worm
boilers
• Available in 200, 250 and 300 litres
• High grade stainless steel cylinder with laser welded seams
• Insulation meets CHeSS best practice (loss as low as 1.9kWh)
• 25 year warrantee in cylinder shell
• 554mm width for flexible siting
• 3kW immersion heater as standard
• 3 thermal cut outs (boiler, immersion and solar)
• Supplied with a carrying handle for easy of transportation
Solar Pump Station
The Solar Pump Station (part of the Clearly Solar system), pumps
the solar fluid from the flat plate to the cylinder and back again. Its
compact design fits easily on the wall in the house or loft. The three
speed pump enables you to match the flow rate of the system to a
wide range of properties.
Because heat naturally rises the pump station is fitted with 2 check
valves which stops circulation of the solar fluid when the pump is not
running, forcing the heat to stay in the cylinder rather than
transferring back into the flat plate, increasing system efficiency.
• 6m head pump
• Integrated flow meter
• Two isolation valves
• Two non-return valves
• Two temperature gauges
• Pressure gauge
• Pressure relief valve
• Expansion vessel connection
• Integrated slow adjuster and meter

New Generation in Glow-wormHeating and Hot Water Systems
For years the Glow-worm xi range of boilers has served the British
public well, becoming one of the most popular choices in the
UK market.
As technology and customer needs develop over time even the
most popular models need to move with the times. This is why
Glow-worm have developed a new generation of advanced
boilers to replace the xi range.
Introducing the Ultracom
The Ultracom is based on 4th generation tried and tested
technology. We have kept all the great bits of the xi, like the
stainless steel heat exchanger and extensive flueing options
and enhanced it with technically advanced inbuilt digital
user controls, improved aesthetics and drop down wiring
connections for easier installation.
This makes the Ultracom not only exceptionally reliable and easy
to install, but also easier to program, better to look at and
provides increased system control to the homeowner.
Providing the complete system package
The new Ultracom range is SEDBUK A rated and available as
a Combi, Open Vent or Sealed System boiler in a
wide variety of outputs to suit all domestic needs.
We also provide Cylinders (page 14), Plume Management Kits
(page 15), Condensate Pumps (page 15) and a brand new range
of Glow-worm controls (pages 6, 7, 12 and 13) which are simple
to fit and designed to talk to the Glow-worm boiler, giving you
everything you need to complete the job.

Room temperature is kept totally constant with aGlow-worm control
Outdoor SensorGlow-worm also provide an outdoor sensor which you
can install with the Ultracom cxi and Glow-worm
controls to create a full weather compensation system.
The Climastat, Climapro and Climapro RF all operate on low
voltage and have simple wiring connections so there is no worry
about Part P compliance when installing a Glow-worm controller
with an Ultracom cxi.
Ultracom cxi Combi ControlsBrand new from Glow-worm are the Climastat, Climapro and
Climapro RF. This range of intelligent controls is totally compatible
for use with the Ultracom cxi and very easy to install.
The Climastat is a room stat which controls temperature and the
Climapro and Climapro RF are programmable room thermostats
which have two channels enabling your customer to set their hot
water and central heating to come on either together or at totally
different times of the day, 7 days a week.
All Glow-worm controls are intelligent. This means that they talk
to the Ultracom cxi adding an extra level of intelligence to the
modulation built into the boilers. This advanced level of intelligent
modulation keeps the room temperature totally constant,
providing better room comfort and makes the system more
efficient.

Ultracom Open Vent and System Controls
Ultracom Open Vent and System Controls
Brand new from Glow-worm are the Climastat, Climapro and
Climapro RF. This range of controls is totally compatible for use
with the Ultracom hxi and sxi and very easy to install.
The Climastat is a room stat which controls temperature and the
Climapro and Climapro RF are programmable room thermostats
which have two channels enabling your customer to set their hot
water and central heating to come on either together or at totally
different times of the day, 7 days a week.
Installing the controls
To install the Climastat, Climapro and Climapro RF with the
Ultracom hxi or sxi, they need to be installed with an options
board, which is also available as an accessory from Glow-worm.
The Climastat, Climapro and Climapro RF receiver wire directly to
the Ultracom hxi or sxi, the options board, is then plugged into the
boiler separately and acts as a relay between the boiler and the
wiring centre.
Climapro RF - Wireless Control
The Climapro RF has exactly the same functionality as the
Climapro, except it talks to the Ultracom hxi or sxi using radio
frequency (RF) technology.
There is no need to take up any flooring, thread wires around the
room or drill through walls. The Climapro RF is simply hung on a
wall and a small receiver is wired to the Ultracom hxi or sxi - neat,
tidy and simple to install.

Cylinder Range
Glow-worm provides a wide range of mains-fed unvented hot
water cylinders that are designed to work with any UK boilers, not
just the Glow-worm range, in open vent or sealed systems.
Our cylinders are incredibly robust and built to last. Each
manufactured from high grade stainless steel, with laser welded
seams and guaranteed against perforation of the steel shell for 25
years.
Available in six sizes 115, 150, 175, 200, 250 and 300 litres, they
are suitable for all sizes of property from small single bathroom up
to a large two bathroom property with ensuite shower room.
But most importantly, all Glow-worm cylinders have excellent
insulation that achieves heat loss as low as 1.7kWh and a high
recovery-heating coil that provides recovery in as little as
20 minutes.
14
Main features
• High grade stainless steel cylinder with laser welded seams
• Insulation meets CheSS best practice (as low as 1.7kWh)
• High recovery heating coil (just 20 minutes)
• High flow rates achievable working at 3.5bar pressure
• External expansion vessel (supplied)
• Expansion vessel wall mounting bracket(available as an accessory)

Condensate Pump
Unlike old standard efficiency boilers, High Efficiency Condensing
boilers produce water in the form of condensate as a by-product
of operating more efficiently. This is a great benefit for the
environment, but can make installation more difficult in places
with restricted access to a waste drain pipe, like the basement.
To remove this problem and enhance the siting flexibility of
the Ultracom cxi, hxi and sxi, Glow-worm have produced a
condensate pump to collect the condensate from the boiler and
pump it back into the waste system.
The Glow-worm Condensate Pump is the smallest available in the
UK, being smaller than a shoe box, it operates at maximum
efficiency, with the reservoir pump discharging the condensate in
one go when the fill level is reached rather than as a continuous
operation. In the unlikely event of the condensate pump
becoming too full, the overflow safety switch will shut the
Ultracom down and the pump’s LED display will go red indicating
a fault.
• Smallest condensate pump in the UK
• Compatible with all Glow-worm Ultracom models
• Vertical pump height up to 4m
• 6m discharge hose for connecting the pump to thewaste water system
• Over flow safety switch
Plume Management Kit
Plume is the vapour trail that is
seen coming from the front,
back or sides of a house when
the flue gas temperature drops
below the dew point. It can
happen with all boilers, but is
more significant on high
efficiency condensing boilers.
Plume is not harmful but can
be viewed as unsightly and can
potentially be a nuisance if it drifts across neighbours properties
or public areas. This is why Glow-worm provides the Plume
Management Kit.
The simple piping kit fits neatly onto the horizontal flue of
any Glow-worm high efficiency boiler installed in the UK. The kit
enables the plume to be exhausted further away from the flue
duct, reducing the visual impact of the vapour trail.
The Plume Management Kit can also be used to overcome many
more site issues. The kit can be extended to a maximum of 6m
in length and can be directed around ledges and other obstacles
to easily achieve the minimum clearance required on installation
without having to do the costly and difficult job of relocating
a boiler.
• Siting on wall face or above the eaves of a building
• Can be retro-fitted to any existing Glow-worm
High Efficiency installation
• Additional elbows, bends and 1-meter extensions available
• Simple push-fit connection
• Available in black or white to match rain water fittings

So small, it can fit inside a kitchenwall cupboard
FlexicomAmazingly flexible, surprisingly compact. So much more than High Efficiency.
To replace an old boiler or install a new one with the minimum of
fuss, you need a boiler that will fit just about anywhere. That’s
why Glow-worm created the Flexicom.
The Flexicom has a direct rear flue and is so compact it fits inside
a standard kitchen cupboard. The Flexicom gives you loads of
siting flexibility, particularly useful when replacing a standard
efficiency boiler with an existing direct rear flue or if space is a
premium in the property you are working in.
The pull-out electrical connection block means that you don’t
have to remove the front case during installation and the
pre-fixing jig, upward piping frame and technical back-up
provided by Glow-worm, should you ever need it, are all designed
to make installation as easy as we can for you.
Available as a Combi, Open Vent or Sealed System boiler with a
wide range of outputs, the Flexicom has the best possible rating
for energy efficiency being SEDBUK A rated with a NOx class 5
rating and recommended by the Energy Saving Trust.

NEW Flexicom ‘glide down’ plug in timer
A brand new development for the Flexicom cx is the simple but
effective plug in timer. One simple push and the clock glides in to
position. Set the time to your requirements and another gentle
push hides the clock from view inside the base of the boiler.
The Flexicom clock accessory simply clips in to this imaginatively
designed, glide down casing and there is no need to remove the
case to fit it. An optional extra on all Flexicom cx models, it
provides the functionality of an electromechanical timer built in
without the need for external controls or extra wiring.
The only time the homeowner sees the timer is when they are
setting it. At all other times it is tucked up neatly inside the case
so the Flexicom cx retains its stylish appearance.

Flexicom cx Combi Controls
6
Flexicom Combi Controls
Brand new from Glow-worm are the Climastat, Climapro and
Climapro RF. This range of intelligent controls is totally compatible
for use with the Flexicom cx and very easy to install.
This means that
they talk to the Flexicom cx adding an extra level of intelligence to
the modulation built into the boilers. This advanced level of
intelligent modulation keeps the room temperature totally
constant, providing better room comfort and makes the system
more efficient.
Room temperature is kept totally constant with a
Glow-worm control
The Climastat, Climapro and Climapro RF all operate on low voltage
and have simple wiring connections so there is no worry about
Part P compliance when installing a Glow-worm controller with a
Flexicom cx.
7
Climastat
Type: Room thermostat - temperature only
Key features:
• Intelligent control which talks directly to Flexicom cx
• Provides increased, constant home comfort and better
energy efficiencies
• Can be used with optional plug in timer to provide a complete
time and temperature control solution
• Low voltage - no Part P worry
• Simple and discreet 2 wire connection
• Polarity not important
• Easy to use
Climapro
Type: Programmable room thermostat - time and temperature
Key features:• Programmable room thermostat for remote time andtemperature control of central heating
• 24 hour or 7 day setting provides excellent control flexibility
• Intelligent control which talks directly to Flexicom cx
• Provides increased, constant home comfort and betterenergy efficiencies
• Low voltage - no Part P worry
• Simple and discreet 2 wire connection
• Polarity not important
• Easy to use
Climapro RF
Type: Wireless programmable room thermostat
- time and temperature
Key features:
Offering the same great features as the Climapro programmable
room thermostat, except the Climapro RF is wireless, meaning that
the controller talks to the boiler using radio frequency technology.
This means there is no need for any wire to link the controller up
to the boiler. No taking up flooring, no threading wires around the
room - just a clean, tidy and easy installation with a receiver that
wires directly to the Flexicom cx.
Flexicom hx Open Vent Boilers 12-35kW
Ideal for most homes, from apartments to 5 bedroom detached, the
Flexicom hx provides a large supply of hot water through a compact
boiler that can fit inside a standard kitchen cupboard*.
The Flexicom hx is SEDBUK A rated with a NOx class 5 rating, the
best possible and is recommended by the Energy Saving Trust for
energy efficiency. Available in 12kW, 15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW and
35kW models, it is compatible with any indirect cylinder and header
tank so it’s really easy to fit in an existing open vent system.

Cylinder Range 115-300 Litres
Unvented Stainless Steel Cylinders
Glow-worm provides a wide range of mains-fed unvented hot
water cylinders that are designed to work with any UK boilers, not
just the Glow-worm range, in open vent or sealed systems.
Our cylinders are incredibly robust and built to last. Each
manufactured from high grade stainless steel, with laser welded
seams and guaranteed against perforation of the steel shell for
25 years.
But most importantly, all Glow-worm cylinders have excellent
insulation that achieves heat loss as low as 1.7kWh and a high

Plume Management Kit
Plume is the vapour trail that
is seen coming from the front,
back or sides of a house when
the flue gas temperature
drops below the dew point. It
can happen with all boilers,
but is more significant on
high efficiency condensing
boilers.
Plume is not harmful but can be viewed as unsightly and can
potentially be a nuisance if it drifts across neighbours properties
or public areas.
The kit can be extended to a maximum of 6m in
length and can be directed around ledges and other obstacles to
easily achieve the minimum clearance required on installation
without having to do the costly and difficult job of relocating
a boiler.
• Compatible with all Glow-worm Flexicom models
• Siting on wall face or above the eaves of a building
• Can be retro-fitted to any existing Glow-worm
High Efficiency installation
• Additional elbows, bends and 1-meter extensions available
• Simple push-fit connection
• Available in black or white to match rain water fittings
Condensate Pump
Unlike old standard efficiency boilers, High Efficiency Condensing
boilers produce water in the form of condensate as a by-product
of operating more efficiently. This is a great benefit for the
environment, but can make installation more difficult in places
with restricted access to a waste drain pipe, like the basement.
To remove this problem and enhance the siting flexibility of the
Flexicom cx, hx and sx, Glow-worm have produced a condensate
pump to collect the condensate from the boiler and pump it back
into the waste system.
The Glow-worm Condensate Pump is the smallest available in the
UK, being smaller than a shoe box and operates at maximum
efficiency, with the reservoir pump discharging the condensate in
one go when the fill level is reached rather than as a continuous
operation. In the unlikely event of the Condensate Pump becoming
too full, the overflow safety switch will shut the Flexicom down and
the pump’s LED display will go red indicating a fault.
• Smallest condensate pump in the UK
• Compatible with all Glow-worm Flexicom models
• Vertical pump height up to 4m
• 6m discharge hose for connecting the pump to the waste
water system
• Over flow safety switch

for Glow-worm controls, designed for theUltrapower sxi
Ultrapower sxi High EfficiencySystem Store
The impressive hot water performance of the Ultrapower sxi is
achieved thanks to its innovative storage system which allows
the generation of endless hot water on demand.
Unlike an indirect cylinder the Ultrapower sxi heats the water
stored in its cylinder directly, resulting in a much faster reheat
time compared to that of a conventional indirect cylinder.
Hot Water Performance
The Ultrapower sxi re-heat time is approximately 10 minutes for the 100 sxi and 17 minutes for the 170 sxi.
As hot water is drawn from the store of the Ultrapower sxi it is
automatically replaced by the boiler, by doing this the
Ultrapower sxi can provide the equivalent hot water
performance as a much larger conventional indirect coil cylinder.
3
True on demand heating andhot water from a Combi
Stylishly designed
with an orange
back-lit display, the
inbuilt controls of the
Ultrapower sxi provide
technically advanced
inbuilt system control.
The adaptable inbuilt programmer provides 7 day or 24-hour,
single or two channel control for the central heating and hot
water pre-heat function. The simple push button controls, cut &
paste and advance functionality mean that it takes seconds to set
and alter any programmes, providing the homeowner with as
much or as little flexibility as they need.
2 Min 4 Min 6 Min 8 Min 10 Min
The Ultrapower sxi also utilises a much smaller hot water cylinder
than a conventional system boiler, but because the boiler
recharges the cylinder as the hot water is being drawn off, it
means the Ultrapower sxi provides the same hot water
performance as a much larger indirect cylinder.
Another major advantage is that unlike an indirect cylinder, once
the hot water store of the Ultrapower sxi has been depleted the
boiler operates as a normal combi, which means that the
homeowner never runs out of hot water.

notes
• This boiler must be installed by a competent person in
accordance with the rules in force in the United Kingdom.
• No secondary domestic hot water storage is needed.
• When domestic hot water is required, the heat exchanger
heats the mains cold water directly, ensuring a rapid response
time from turning on a tap to a continuous flow of hot water.
• In areas where the water hardness is more than 200mg/l, it is
recommended that a proprietary water conditioner be fitted in
the cold water supply to the boiler. A non-return valve must be
fitted to precede the water conditioner supply.

Ultrapower sxi Controls
Introducing the Climastat, Climaproand Climapro RF
The Climastat, Climapro and Climapro RF are Glow-worm’s brand
new range of intelligent controls, each being totally compatible
with the Ultrapower sxi. Whether you are adding controls to the
Ultrapower sxi because it is difficult for the user to reach or
providing extra control and functionality, Glow-worm have the
totally compatible, easy to install solution.
Totally intelligent controls
All Glow-worm controls are intelligent. This means that Glow-worm
controls talk to the Ultrapower sxi adding an extra level
of intelligence to the modulation built into the boiler.
This advanced level of intelligent modulation keeps the room
temperature totally constant, providing better room comfort and
makes the system more efficient.
When used with an Ultrapower sxi, the Glow-worm control
automatically overrides the inbuilt digital control so there is no
need to disable it. All controls use 24V power supply and a simple
wiring connections, so there is no requirement for Part P when
installing a Glow-worm control with an Ultrapower sxi.

L = Flue length, measured from
outside wall face to centre line of flue
outlet. If L is less than 589mm then
only the horizontal flue is required.
If L is greater than 589mm then
extensions are required. If L is less
than 384mm then use horizontal top
flue A2043400, which can be cut to
suit a minimum wall thickness of
75mm.
X = wall thickness.
Z = distance from centre line of flue outlet to inside wall face.
The horizontal flue can be extended up to the maximum flue
lengths with extensions but the maximum lengths must not be
exceeded (refer to L in table to the right).
For each additional 90° or 2 x 45° bends fitted, the maximum flue
length must be reduced by 1m.
The vertical flue adaptor E is required for vertical flue connections to
the boiler.
