PRINCIPAL’S REPORTI hope you enjoyed our last newsletter. We took advantage of Education Week to create a montage of students engaged in a diverse range of learning experiences which aptly reflected this year’s theme: Every Student, Every Voice. I would like to thank the teaching and non-teaching staff for their continued dedication in providing your children with these amazing experiences, and to Kim for compiling this memento.

Last week we inducted our Senior Student Executive Team into the roles of School Captains (Ethan Bird and Bethany Hester), Vice Captains (Leon Mackintosh and Anneka Hooke), Senior SRC (Elizabeth Howarth, Charlotte Maslen and Cara McIntosh). We also inducted our Junior SRC and sporting House Captains and Vice Captains. Congratulations to all recipients.

The HSC Trial examinations conclude this week. We have external HSC examiners coming into the school over the next few weeks to mark the HSC performances in Music and Drama and the practical works in Visual Art and Industrial Technology. We wish these students well during this time. I would like to encourage you to visit Gloucester Art Gallery to view our student’s HSC Visual Art work. The Industrial Technology works will be available for viewing after marking. Music and Drama will provide performances in the next few weeks.

This week we celebrated SASS Recognition Week. Our School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) are vital in the day to day operations at GHS. Their roles are many and quite diverse. Apart from being the first contact either on arrival at school or via the phone, our staff undertake the following roles: financing (paying accounts, salaries, and budgets); printing (teacher resources, examinations, newsletters, student reports); monitor excursions; timetables; working closely with individual students or small groups to support their learning; librarian support; chemical monitoring; planning and preparing experiments; planning and preparing food for Food Technology/Hospitality classes, grocery shopping; organisation Parent/Teacher evenings; yard maintenance; basic repairs around the school; farm maintenance; First Aid assistance to students; monitor school sign, web page and SMS messages; attendance records; compliance; school newsletter and much more. Thank you.

On behalf of the school I would like to thank Gloucester Charities for their kind donations in supporting the Thursday morning student breakfast, individual students and contribution toward new school soccer shirts.

    Mrs Trudi Edman, Principal

NETBALL GALA DAYOn Thursday 29 August, the U15 Girls Netball team competed in the Manning Zone Netball Knockout competition. The team consisted of: Natalie Rayner, Emily Kearney, Toreen Denyer, Josie Fitzgerald, Jorja Beard, Anita Jackson, Ella Howe, Katrina Channon and Charli Macdonald.

The team played four 40 minute games. Firstly, Gloucester played Wingham who proved to be tough competition until the last half where Gloucester came away with a win 23-12. In the second round Gloucester played Forster. The girls had trouble keeping up in the first half, but following a few position changes, fought back hard in the second half, only being defeated by 3 points! Gloucester played Taree in the third round. Taree were a well-drilled team and proved too strong for all teams on the day. The last round Gloucester versed Chatham and came away with a convincing win 45-5.

All girls played extremely well in all games. Excellent defensive skills were shown by Natalie, Toreen and Anita. Great communication shown by our sharp shooters, Ella, Charli and Emily. Fantastic movement of the ball in the centres shown by Jorja, Josie and Katrina. They all displayed exceptional determination and good sportsmanship skills that Gloucester is well-known for. Congratulations girls on your achievements.

A big thank you to Danielle Channon for umpiring, Sally Boughey for scoring, Sally Maslen for assisting with organisation, and to our lovely, supportive parents for cheering us on.

Mrs Toni Stanton - Netball Coach

GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL TRI CHALLENGEThe Gloucester High School Tri Challenge will be held on the last day of this term (Term 3), Friday 27 September, 2019. This year will be the 27th running of the event which comprises a 10km ride, 4km kayak and a 4km run. This fun and challenging event is open to all students as either an individual or as part of a 2 or 3 person team. Individual entrants must be at least 14 years of age on race day. Entry fees are $45 for an individual or $75 for a team, which includes all cost and prizes on the day.

Entries close on Friday 6 September (next week!!!) or when we reach our maximum field size of 56 entries. Late entries will not be accepted.

Please note that “new” kayak paddlers (ie. those who have not completed the kayak leg in the tri-challenge before) will need to have completed a kayak training session with Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre a week before the race, at a cost of approximately $45.00 per student. This will be held on Friday 13 September and organisation for this will be communicated when the entries are finalised.

This event is a unique and special day in the Gloucester High School calendar and has been well supported in the past. With 4 weeks until race day, it is time to start some regular training and take full advantage of the benefits this type of race can offer.

Any parents who would like to make themselves available to help out on the day please contact me at the high school. Entry forms are available at the school office and are due by Friday 6 September.

    Adam Cameron – Race Director.

RUGBY UNIONThe U13 boys Rugby Union team travelled to Tuncurry to play in the Secondary School 7’s Friday 9 August.

In the first match against Great Lakes College – Forster, Gloucester flew out of the blocks with tries to Kyden De Angelis and Pryce Crane. Nick Edwards chimed in with a try of his own for GHS to lead 15-0 at halftime. In the second half, Gloucester didn’t have it all their own way with Forster scoring, however, tries to Zac Schafer and another to Nick Edwards saw the final score 25-5 to Gloucester.

The second game was against Manning Valley Anglican College. Better cleaning out saw Gloucester retain possession in the rucks and roll downfield. Tries to Hayden Schultz, Nick Edwards, Kyden De Angelis and 2 tries to Jackson Scanlon saw Gloucester prevail 25-0.

The third game saw GHS play Great Lakes College - Tuncurry. Getting off to a flying start, Kyden De Angelis scored 2 tries in quick succession for Gloucester to lead 10-0. Tuncurry scored just before half time to make the score 10-5. The second half was dominated by Tuncurry scoring 2 more tries to win 15-10.

Anthony Shultz and Nick Maslen also enjoyed the day playing in an U15’s Barbarian side.

HSC VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION This exhibition reflects the efforts that these students have been making over the past 12 months. Each student is given clear guidelines regarding what they have to do to complete their body of work for the final practical examination for their Higher School Certificate (HSC).

They begin with an idea/concept then take that through the rigors of a selected media with the intention of displaying how they have engaged in their selected medium/media.

Students are able to specialize in a range of ‘expressive forms’ to finalize their work. Aside from the traditional media of drawing, painting and sculpture, students can now work in a range of media for the one body of work, this is called ‘Collection of Works’. This has proven to be a popular way of completing the work as it allows them to include other disicplines in the one Body of Work.

Photomedia, today, has an extensive influence on student imagery, given that it is so available through contemporary electronic devices, and can be easily accessed through the use of ‘apps’, enabling students to be able to work independently to complete the work.

Regardless of this independence, students must complete the work under the supervision of their teacher, who initially assesses the work before it is externally marked.

The work on display this year, again shows a high standard of skill and resolve to produce high quality artwork for your enjoyment, but more importantly, attract a strong mark for their final examination.

This exhibition is on until Sunday 8 September after which time all the works be secured for the final marking period from the 23rd October.

  • HUNTER WIND ENSEMBLEOn Monday 12th August, Year 7 Students Abbey Seale and Lily Llewellyn participated in a workshop with the Hunter Wind Ensemble in Tuncurry. The students rehearsed 5 pieces and were showcased in an evening concert. All students had the opportunity to audition for the Ensemble which rehearses 2 weekends each term at Newcastle High school. Students from Taree/ Forster/ Tuncurry and Gloucester participated in this wonderful opportunity.

The Hunter Wind Ensemble is lead by Sydney Conservatorium trained Scott Ryan and Michael Jobson as a way to encourage the growth of talented musical students from regional areas that perhaps don’t have the same accessibility as those in metro locations. The ensemble regularly performs at the Sydney Opera House, National Band Eisteddfod and tours annually. Next year they will be undertaking a tour of China in April 2020.

GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL MARINE STUDIESThe Year 9 Marine Studies class recently spent time in the class room and down on the banks of the Gloucester River learning about rivers and riparian zones.

Daniel Trudgeon, an officer with the Local Land Services spoke about the importance of looking after the land and rivers, our impact on the environment and some simple processes that can be used to support the health of our rivers. Specifically, he spoke about the endangered ‘Manning River Helmeted Turtle’. In a recent survey of rivers in the Manning Catchment, for the first time, a turtle was found upstream of the High School making this activity very relevant.

Students evaluating the health of the river. Although low in flow, it was pleasingly healthy with a range of habitats from exposed gravel banks, protected bends and numerous logs within the water column which provides protection for a range of aquatic plants and animals.

Year 9 Marine students and Daniel prepare for their practical river evaluation.

LIBRARY NEWSThursday 22 August was our first pop up library in the Junior Quad, which was very well received by the students. We were set up at the entrance of the canteen where a number of books were borrowed and students also took the opportunity to return their current loans. This was a great chance to open up discussions about books, reading and the great titles we have on offer in the library.

I plan to make this a regular event and will include a senior pop up library to encourage wide reading, which will support student achievement in HSC English, particularly Module C The Craft of Writing.
