I like the use of bold colour, graphic print and textures like denim and lace in your spring summer 2010 collection. What was your main point of reference ?The denim and lace fabrications came from a rock n roll aesthetic. I was inspired by the early nineties and especially the Guns N’ Roses video with Stephanie Seymour- November rain. The wedding scene in that video was one of the main reference points with respect to the use of denim and lace in the collection. But with regards to the other details in the collection like the tailoring and knitwear- that came from the perspective of what someone would wear to a Polo match.

When you design a collection, do you have a muse in mind to direct your creative process?No, there is never one muse in particular which directs the

composition of my collections. I am inspired by all sorts of materials and references. For example, when walking down the street I take in what people are wearing, how they put an outfit together and so on.

So far, the pieces in your collections are definitely not ones for the faint hearted or retiring wall flowers. What kind of attributes do you think someone has to have to carry of your clothes?Well you can’t be shy, that’s for sure! You have to be very comfortable in your own skin and be happy to experiment with clothes.

How would you say your aesthetic has changed since your first collection?It has matured in a lot of different ways, for instance it has developed in the types of pieces present in the collection. It is also less brass and loud and definitely more refined.

But from looking at your current collection, I see it still has your trade mark stamp on the pieces-like the tongue in cheek slogan t shirts and so on.Yes, the collections still retain that sense of fun and tongue in cheek attitude, which will hopefully remain with the brand.

Growing up, were there any designers in particular that stood out for you?I loved early nineties Versace and Vivienne Westwood. Those were probably my two biggest influences growing up.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely has one of those faces it’s impos-sible to forget. Spotted while

doing a work experience placement at Profile Model Management she’s gone on to model for luxury brands such as Burberry, DKNY and Agent Provocateur. And it seems she’s just getting started. We caught up with her to get the scoop on what it was like working with Victoria’s Secret and more!

How did you find out you would be a Victoria’s Secret angel - how did it all come about?Well, I am not officially an angel yet - I have worn wings this last VS show for the first time and I am the only British spokes model and I work for them all the time for advertising and catalogue. I love workingwith them.

You recently shot the 2010 Pirelli calendar with Terry Richardson, what was it like working with him?He is always up beat and fun - we were in Brazil and it was beautiful

Coco Rocha and Chanel Iman have their own blog would you consider starting one too?Maybe one day - when I have some time to concentrate in it.

What’s your favourite city to shop in?London and New York have equally good shops - I am a vintage girl.

Do you have any secret shopping haunts?Yes and they are secret! Ha ha!

Who are your favourite designers?I never say I have a favourite - but I have a nice relationship with Burberry and Christopher Bailey makes beautiful clothes.

We all know one of the perks of being a model are the freebies :) What’s been your favourite gift from a designer?It’s a nice perk - I did get a very nice Dior bag that they sent me recently. Thank you Dior!

Are there any up and coming designers you’re into at the moment?I like Mark Fast a lot and have worn his clothes personally.

What’s been your favourite campaign to shoot so far?Burberry was a really special one and gave my career a great worldwide boost…shooting with Mario Testino and having Christopher Bailey art directing.I recently shot Thomas Wylde with Rankin and that’s going to be beautiful.

Have any of the stylists you’ve worked with influenced your personal style?Not really. I seem to have come up with my own look and it evolves with age.

Are you a high street, designer or vintage girl?Bit of each really. I would wear a Chanel Jacket or bag with Karen Millen’s amazing over the knee boots and a vintage top and jeans... soit’s a bit of everything.

Do you have any style icons?Not really but Kate Moss does look good 99% of the time!

What are your beauty secrets?Sleep and water are classic secrets but really true!

What are your favourite magazines/blogs?‘Glossy’ of course! :) Grazia and all those sort of magazines... in America they have great mindless gossip magazines that are easy to read on the plane. I don’t have that much time on line, I work a lot and I don’t want to spend my free time in front of a computer screen!

I have been working at Giles for some time before I was asked to account on my time here. This is an account of the time leading up to Paris Fashion Week, Spring/Summer 2010.

So far at Giles I have been working predominantly on patterns and leather sampling. My job usually involves altering and drafting patterns and sewing toiles and samples. In the beginning I was working on show pieces for the Giles V&A Fashion in Motion retrospective, which showed many of his most famous works and gave me the opportunity to work on pieces worth in excess of £25,000! For one piece (the Pacman dress) I had to glue Swarovski Crystals on with tweezers, it was even sent to the set of the new Sex and the City movie! Daisy Lowe was in the studio not so long ago to collect her dress for the GQ awards, she’s stunning in person. I also got to work on the Isklar bag collaboration, where I was able to design the layout of the bag. I usually work from 10am until 6pm, but with the show so close, I come in at 9am and work as late as I can, I don’t mind it as I love the experience I’m getting from working here.

DAY 1 – TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22 2009

I’ve just got off a bus having registered in University yesterday. It was a 5 hour journey from Wales. I go straight to the studio.I begin working on altering patterns and then on slicing and creating leather samples for both accessories and garments. I also have sole responsibility for the plastic production – meaning I have to keep a close eye on the amount I use and I also have to cut the patterns by hand with a scalpel! I spend most of the day on this.

Victoria Beckham arrives in the studio in the afternoon, she greets all of the interns and is incredibly nice to everyone. She goes to the back and selects fabrics for another dress, similar to the Giles one she wore on Fashions Night Out.

DAY 2 – WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23 2009

Katie Grand is in the studio all day today, styling the show. I cut some patterns in leather and then get back on working with the plastic. I am shown a sketch of a bag, of which I must draft the pattern. I do this on my lunch break and come back ready to draft and cut

DAY 3 – THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24 2009

We have deadlines to meet with the plastic bags and accessories. They are entirely sewn by hand with one long piece of plastic, which is also cut by me. They also have to be measured and punched so the holes are perfect. This is the same process by which Hermes create their bags, except we don’t use a needle. I get some other interns to help on the sewing as there are about 8 bags to finish a.s.a.p, which then have to have Swarovski bugs sewn on and are sent to the Swarovski Atelier. I believe the Victoria Beckham dress was sent off today also.

DAY 4 - FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25 2009

Much of the bags are finished and are sent to the Swarovski Atelier. I also begin work on clutch bags and hair pieces. The deadlines are getting tighter as we get closer to Fashion Week. Giles calls me to the back to ask my personal opinion on three t-shirt designs, he wants to know which I would choose – I pick the one with the animated dinosaur, it’s really cool. When I come back all of the other interns think I’ve been invited to Paris, rumours travel fast. >>

When did you first realise you had a talent for drawing?I’ve always drawn. My parents are both artists so they were very encouraging towards drawing and painting when I was growing up.

How did you go about pursuing illustration as a full time career ?After graduating (I did my BA in fashion design) I put up a portfolio consisting mainly of some small illustration assignments I had done while studying, and sent a link to various places. One of them was Unit C.M.A., an agency based in Amsterdam, and they contacted me back and I’ve been working with them since then. I was very lucky to have been able to illustrate full-time almost immediately since graduating.

I’m sure you get asked this a lot :) But where do you find your inspiration?I get my inspiration mostly from literature, art and people, and of course fashion is a big inspiration.

When you first started out how did you hone your skills and develop your own personal style?I never consciously developed any style. I just illustrate things that interest, trouble or fascinate me at the time and my style develops organically constantly based on that. I have this feeling that I need to illustrate and repeat certain things and get them out of my head before I can move on. I guess that is at least a part of what my style consists of.

Your heroines are always very glamorous and dress in chic clothes how important is fashion to you and which designers are your personal favourites ?Glamorous seems like a funny word to me. Fashion is a big inspiration but I am personally most interested in fashion that questions glamour and beauty. For instance the works of Rei Kawakubo and Jun Takahashi have always been very inspirational. I used to be very into dark poetic designers such as Ann

Demeulemeester and Rick Owens but now I find myself more interested in things that are more theatrical like Gareth Pugh, Daniel Palillo and Alexander McQueen. Lately I’ve also been into 90’s Gaultier.

What do you enjoy doing away from illustration?I love to read, I’ve been reading a lot of Italo Calvino lately. I also have a great book that’s a compilation of artists writings from different eras. I’m also fond of sci-fi and horror. Especially short stories.

What are your favourite tracks on your ipod at the moment?I’ve been listening to Benjamin Biolay

You’ve had your illustrations everywhere from Finnish stamps to the New York Times Style Magazine - what’s been the highlight of your career so far?I don’t know. >>

Let’s backtrack a few years, shall we? Before Alexander Wang won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2008 and became a legend? Before Erin Wasson shot to

fame as his muse? What did we consider to be grunge? Joan Jett dressed

in baggy pants, messy tees and ugly, inconspicuous shoes. Agree? “Grunge” as a rule was considered to be for the girl who is utterly devoid of any semblance of style. The girl who couldn’t care less. Something looked down upon by the majority of the conventional editors. Then Alexander Wang happened.

At 25, he is credited with making the “model off-duty” look as common as a tulle skirt on the cobblestones of Paris. Grunge is back with a sexy twist. The likes of Taylor Momsen, Rachel Bilson, Mischa Barton, Alexa Chung and Peaches Geldof along with his ultimate muse, Erin Wasson are huge fans. The thing that hits you about his clothes is their sublime simplicity with an edge. They make you want to be a downtown hipster or a model. He consistently juxtaposes male and female dynamics in his pieces, creating an allure that’s hard to miss. His Coco Duffel bag is a total rage and sold out everywhere and he brought boyfriend jackets to the masses.

THE WANG GIRLSHOW THE DESIGNER AND HIS POSSE ARE CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF SEXY GRUNGE

Wang manages to create a range of fabulous pieces, while keeping them wearable yet undeniably chic. He’ll effortlessly balance slinky tanks with boyfriend trousers or roomy jackets with leggings or no trousers at all. It’s all about the proportions.

Pictures of his pre-fall collection clearly show his innate understanding of a working woman’s wardrobe. Yes, the distressed pants and covetable cardigans are still intact, but they’re solidified by accents like broader belts and sleeker fabrics.

He essentially manages to merge the Californian laid-back style with downtown streetwear glam. But don’t for a second think that he’s all about the daywear. He has successfully created some stunning eveningwear pieces while maintaining his aesthetic - luxe satin tuxedos, beaded vests, midnight blue sequins et al.

After his intervention in the fashion fraternity, the word “grunge” easily translates to “fashion forward” or “downtown chic” sans missing a beat, which in turn translates to an It girls’ uniform. The effortlessly uber cool femme fatale. The girl every guy wants and every girl wants to be. And for achieving that Mr. Wang, we salute you.

We’re huge fans of Loft In Soho’s blog. Her amazing collages, often comprised

of illustrations, beautiful photography and tongue in cheek slogans are incredibly inspiring and uplifting. So we persuaded her to give her beauti-ful collages the “Glossy” treatment and here are the results!

What inspired you to start Loft In Soho ?After making collages on paper as a personal notebook for a long time, I thought I could do for my own website and share them. I wanted a space to share what inspires me in every moment, like a virtual notebook. How do you come up with the concepts for your amazing collages?The music, my mood, the constant visits to streetstyle blogs and websites with amazing editorials, everything influences me. I try to be very visual and graphic.

Can you tell us your real name or is it a secret?It’s a secret!

What do you love about fashion?The creativity of designers, stylists, photographers .... is art!

What would be your dream job?A creative and liberal profession.

What are your favourite blogs and magazines. I’m been an avid reader of many fashion magazines for a long time. I also like design and architecture magazines. And I’m addicted to art books, especially those from Taschen! I visit the blogs that I like every day (the list is very long, there are a lot of talent!).
