Glossop Rugby Club currently provides one of the best experiences for girls who play rugby. The club has had significant success over recent years thanks to the hard work of a small number of dedicated coaches and tenacious young women.

Both U15 and U18 teams contribute players to county and the North West region. We had 5 of the U18 girls playing in the North West team and we regularly have players selected for the England HPA and TGD. So we have some of the very best players around!

We play in leagues and at various tournaments and Glossop has established itself as one of the leading clubs in the North West.

We always need more players. Experience is not required - we provide all the instruction you need. Come and join us and enjoy not only the on-the-pitch fun but also the off-pitch fun.

Training is at 7pm at the Glossop Rugby Club every Thursday. Come and join us at training or give contact Soy on 0786 2226176 or David on 07798831944

But it is not all about winning. You've never seen a team enjoy Thursday night training as much as the Glossop/Macc girls. We like to have fun.

Imagine if you will a wet, cold, windy Sunday morning in November. An ideal opportunity to roll over in bed before a late breakfast. Sounds nice doesn’t it?

Then why is it that forty dedicated Rugby enthusiasts throw off the remnants of a good Saturday night and make their weary way to Hargate Hill? There are over three hundred excellent reasons; and each of them turn up, trailing various parents and siblings behind them, to take part in the glory of Rugby.

Glossop Rugby Club’s Mini and Junior section is the biggest junior sporting group in the Glossop area and something that, as a club, we have to be extremely proud of. Today upwards of two hundred and fifty kids from age five to sixteen arrive every Sunday from September through April, all eager to learn the mysteries of our glorious game. These kids are the life blood of our club and it is in the club’s best interest that this group be nurtured and grown. The success of the club in this area has been down to the excellent efforts of Gino and Kath Sonczak who over the last six years have developed the Mini and Juniors into what they are today and it is now my responsibility to build on this success – a not insignificant task as I quickly found out!

As with any group we are always on the lookout for fresh faces in all age groups from the Tots – under sixes - all the way though the Minis; Under 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s; and up through the Junior Ranks; Under 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s. While the focus is on skills, temawork and fun we also have a large number of inter-club fixtures where the kids get to compete with other teams in the area, with interesting trips to places as exciting as Buxton, Bakewell, Marple as well as further afield with trips to Bury and Didsbury among notable fixtures we have on the cards.

The Junior Teams also take part in the Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire Cup competitions and in recent years we have had excellent results in these competitions. So if you have, or know of any, kids; both boys and girls are equally welcome on any Sunday morning. And don’t worry there are always hot beverages and a wide selection of breakfast choices to keep the cold weather at bay!

So what are our plans for the future? Simple, we plan to build on the foundations we have in place and ensure that we have a constant stream of talent though the years feeding into our senior teams. However, this takes a lot of dedication and we are lucky that we have people who not only train and teach the kids but also work in background to ensure that all the rules and regulations surrounding working with children are met – a not insignificant task.

However, as with any voluntary organisation, we can never have too many helpers and we are always looking for people with skills and dedication to add to our team. If you feel you have something to offer then come along on Sunday and see the growing success of Glossop Rugby Club’s Mini and Junior section. Roy CalderChair of Mini and Junior Rugby

NEW WEBSITE

Or simply Google – Glossop RUFC

This year we want your team to let the rest of the club know how you’re getting on. With the introduction of the new website it couldn’t be easier. Firstly you need to join up, it’s really simple and it means you can log on to the Forum and ask questions and tell us about what’s going on with your side. Another way to get your match reports, pictures and results on the site is to email the webmaster.

The website is a fantastic way to communicate and can really help to bolster the clubs profile, both with current members, players and supporters and those wishing to be a part of what we do.

2nd XV sponsored by

This year looks as though it could be a very exciting one for the second XV. The appointment of Will Parker as captain has added youthful vigour to the squad which should see a team brimming with young talent, the perfect scenario as far as fighting for first team places is concerned. Parker has outlined his commitment to providing an environment where training and playing hard is matched by a vibrant social scene. Looks as though it could be good fun!

This season our 2nd team have been kindly sponsored by Bakers Solicitors of Glossop, Providing much needed financial support along with a brand new set of stunning team shirts, in white with blue detail. The team will carry Bakers Solicitors superb professional approach to the pitch. Extending Ian Bakers wonderful support, Bakers Solicitors have also sponsored the Academy, the rugby club summer ball and the general club!!! Please support Bakers Solicitors were ever you can, make them your first port of call for any legal services.

1st XV sponsored by

The first XV will look to move forward this season after finishing mid table in South Lancs Cheshire in 2009/2010. Captain Dan Clark stays on and will be ably supported by head coach Andy Sales. Once again the team will look to build a solid platform in the forwards whilst adding a cutting edge in the backline.

Following last year’s 1st team sponsorship and provision of the brand new playing shirts for the 1st XV, Amdec forklifts trucks have yet again come up trumps. They have provided their sponsorship and backing of the 1st XV for the 2010/2011 season. To bolster the image of the squad, Amdec have this term provided them with stylish, durable and rain resistant warm up tops. A smart forward looking team - Amdec and Glossop rugby club! A BIG thank you for Amdec’s brilliant support!!!

3rd XV sponsored by

Danny Sims returns to captaincy after a spell of 7 years plotting his next attempt at providing that special brand of champagne rugby he so loves. Sims was captain of the 2nd XV back in 2003 and he worked tirelessly to create a true team, men who played together and partied together. The third team could be the ones to watch this season, if Sims’ history is anything to go by promotion might be on the cards.

To confirm his vibrant commitment, Danny Sims the new 3rd XV captain, has sponsored our outstanding 3rd team squad. Under the guise of Danny’s, DSJ Research Company, Danny has provided the funds to equip the team with a brand new set of blue and white quarter shirts. These outstanding quality shirts, will give the team the look smart, play smart, edge they will need for promotion - be prepared to confuse them with the 1st XV. Please support Danny's 3rd team and ‘Profit from uncovering the unknown’ with DJS Research.

This year Glossop will re-launch the veterans team. With the able guidance of Alan Barth and Graham Morgan the vets will take part in the Derbyshire Veterans cup. You have to be 35 to qualify and the emphasis will be on social rugby.

Bakers Solicitors join other kind sponsors in supporting this team from Marple and Glossop. Chris ward and Kev Swift plus the other coaching staff are very optimistic about this outstanding team, please give them your valued support. Let’s have a big turnout for all their home games at Glossop. In a move of necessity this years Academy side will link up with Marple under 17’s to play in the North West Halbro Colts leagues. Chris Ward heads up the amalgamation which, it is hoped, will give those lads who want to continue playing the chance to do so, whilst attracting new players to bolster the squads of both teams.

The pitches have under gone a total renovation program, with 120 tonnes of sand put on them in the closed season, along with verti draining, seeding, fertilising and the complete renovation of the posts. Hargate Hill is looking like Twickenham ! We have also lopped the trees on Hargate Hill Lane,to stop the shadow cast,on frosty days. This should eliminate some of the cancellations of matches due to frozen pitches. The path and the standing area around Fred's bench has also been renovated to ‘free of mud status’ and its looking good! New planters and umbrellas are lifting the look of the patio, with the planted areas near the front door giving you a bright arrival. There’s never been a better time to book your function at Glossop Rugby Club -

So a big THANK YOU has be given to those people who have helped with the recent work parties and renovation work.
