Glory to God for All Things E very September 1st the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the Indiction. The word indiction comes from the Latin Indictio, meaning order or decree. Originally, the Roman empire would issue these as a tax to its soldiers to be paid over fifteen years, the term of their service. Following a 5th century decree of Emperor Leo I, Sep- tember 1 is considered to be the beginning of the year, because ac- cording to the Churchs tradition, this was the first day of creation. Traditionally this also coincided with the harvest, also a time for re- newal and preparation for next years crops. And so the Church cele- brates the beginning of its Ecclesiastical year on September 1st, with a spirit of thankfulness and renewal in the life of the Christs Church. For Orthodox Christians, the feast is not simply to mark a new season, but much more. Many of us are returning from our summer vacations, beginning school and other activities. We begin the ministries of our parish with new fervor. But this is also time of thanksgiving for the abundance God has given us. All throughout Christs ministry He recognized God the Fathers hand in everything He did. He took the sev- en loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.(Matthew 15:36-37) Christ would always begin by giving thanks to God, recognizing Him as the source of life. We see this at the beginning of Christs ministry to the Galileans when He preached to the people in Nazareth. He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’” (Luke 4:16-19) The peoples reaction to his reading was disbelief. They marveled at how this simple man had gained such knowledge and preached with such authority. In doing so they disregarded the words He preached. Not only that, their marvel turned to wrath and they ran him out of His own city. Thanksgiving to God is an essential part of our own spiritual lives. Fr. John Angelis notes, Jesus came to fulfill what His Father had promised to Jews and the whole mankind. If we do not have faith, then miracles, which are signs of Gods power, will not help us. Glory to God for All Things

E very September 1st the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the Indiction. The word indiction comes from the Latin Indictio,

meaning order or decree. Originally, the Roman empire would issue these as a tax to its soldiers to be paid over fifteen years, the term of their service. Following a 5th century decree of Emperor Leo I, Sep-tember 1 is considered to be the beginning of the year, because ac-cording to the Church’s tradition, this was the first day of creation. Traditionally this also coincided with the harvest, also a time for re-newal and preparation for next year’s crops. And so the Church cele-brates the beginning of its Ecclesiastical year on September 1st, with a spirit of thankfulness and renewal in the life of the Christ’s Church. For Orthodox Christians, the feast is not simply to mark a new season, but much more. Many of us are returning from our summer vacations, beginning school and other activities. We begin the ministries of our parish with new fervor. But this is also time of thanksgiving for the abundance God has given us. All throughout Christ’s ministry He recognized God the Father’s hand in everything He did. “He took the sev-en loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.” (Matthew 15:36-37) Christ would always begin by giving thanks to God, recognizing Him as the source of life.

We see this at the beginning of Christ’s ministry to the Galileans when He preached to the people in Nazareth. “He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’” (Luke 4:16-19) The people’s reaction to his reading was disbelief. They marveled at how this simple man had gained such knowledge and preached with such authority. In doing so they disregarded the words He preached. Not only that, their marvel turned to wrath and they ran him out of His own city. Thanksgiving to God is an essential part of our own spiritual lives. Fr. John Angelis notes, “Jesus came to fulfill what His Father had promised to Jews and the whole mankind. If we do not have faith, then miracles, which are signs of God’s power, will not help us. Miracles produce fruits only in believing hearts.” (http://bit.ly/2bEoZrY) A key step in fostering belief is thanksgiving. Start every day with prayer, giving thanks to God for the abundance He has given us. If we practice this daily, we will see a radical change as we allow Christ to work in our hearts.

M any of us remember and were moved the Palm Sunday visit to St. Demetrios of Bishop Athanasius

Akunda of Kenya. One of the ways the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) is supporting the work of His Grace is through the presence of a long-term American Missionary teaching at the Makarios Seminary in Nairobi.

Nairobi is home to more than 3 million people and has a vi-brant atmosphere where the Orthodox Church is growing. Lo-cated in Nairobi is the Makarios III Patriarchal Orthodox Semi-nary which trains future priests to lead the ever-growing Ortho-dox Church in Kenya and the surrounding area. The students who attend are from all over Africa, not just Kenya. There are around 250-300 Orthodox parishes in Kenya alone, and the need for catechesis is great.

Dr. William Black, OCMC long-term missionary in Kenya,

teaches full time at the seminary He is helping to train the

future leaders of the churches of Kenya and all Africa so

that they can bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to their

people.

If you would like to assist the efforts of Bishop Athanasius and Dr. Black in growing the Orthodox faith in Kenya, , please consider a gift to OCMC. You can donate online at www.OCMC.org or by sending a check to OCMC, 220 Mason Manatee Way, St. Augustine, FL 32086. Be sure to designate "Kenya."

BOOKSTORE REFLECTIONS:

O rthodox Christianity teaches us that what we feed our mind, hearts, and spirits has a direct impact on

who we are. On September 14th, we celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross - glorified as the sign of victory, power, and salvation, for all Christians. In the year 323, St. Helen found the Precious Cross and it was in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem for 300 years. Christians around the world have used the sign of the cross for centuries as an example of wordless prayer and gesture of blessing. Our bookstore offers information on the Holy Cross through numerous items including:

“The Sign of the Cross” by Andreas Andreopoulos; the author informs, explores, and recounts the history of the Holy Cross

Pamphlets & icon cards

Icons of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Hand-crafted wood crosses made by our own George Bayouk

The Holy Cross is our guide in life. We are thankful to God for this symbol of victory and eternal life.

Philoptochos News September 2016

A Message From Philoptochos President Nina Varlamos

What a whirlwind first year as your president! The National, Metropolis and local ministries our chapter is part of continues to amaze me. There is something for everyone! I invite the parish to join me at our September Philoptochos meeting on Tuesday, the 13th at 6:30 pm as I report with Mary Damascus and Deena Maroutsos on our trip to the National Philoptochos Convention at Clergy Laity in Nashville. We are excited to share what we learned at this incredibly informative conference. I am especially interested in more involvement of younger women in our parish and the fresh ideas they will bring to Philoptochos. I also look forward to working with women who have not previously been involved in our chapter and the other Ministries of St Demetrios and welcome suggestions and new ideas for our future. I can be reached at home 206.784.4922 or my cell is 206.499.0369 (call or text). My e-mail is [email protected].

The Heroes of Camp Agape NW 2016 This year we hosted 21 families at Camp Agape NW. This was made possible by the hard work of the Philoptochos chapters of St Demetrios, The Assumption, Holy Apostles and St Nich-olas and the love of over 135 volunteers. Thanks to all who helped throughout the year who gave their time, donations, and prayers!

This year’s theme was “the Avengers” and everyone got to be heroes for a week. Reunion Sunday was a poignant time with past campers and their families. This year's campers had great fun all week with activities like dancing, karaoke, a dock party, fishing, boating, inner-tubing, swimming, arts and crafts, silly skits, a carnival, and foam volleyball. Special treats included a Mom’s Tea, Dad’s Lunch, and Parent’s Dinner Out at the county club. One mother wrote “Agape is honestly the best week for my whole family! It was amazing to be to recipients of such a caring staff. Thank you so much for pouring so much love into our family”

Please Join Us for the Sinatra Chocolate Wine Ball Sunday, November 13th please join Camp Agape NW for an elegant evening at Herban Feast. Our 8th annual celebration will feature a seasonal dinner menu, Washington wines and chocolatiers, and the music of Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Agape, a camp for children with cancer and their families. Again this year, there will not be an auction so that you may enjoy more time for wine, chocolate and friends. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com for $100 or if purchased by Sunday, October 9th only $90 per person. Reserved tables of 10 are available for $875. Camp Agape will have a display at the festival in October to tell the story of our camp and tickets will be available there. For more information, contact [email protected] or call 425.772.1605.

It’s Not Too Late to Join Philoptochos We are always happy to have new members join our group! We hope you will support us with your annual dues of $40 and join us when you can for fellowship. All are welcome and if you have time to donate in addition to your check, even better. You will not receive a call when you write a check as we are a volunteer organization and we are grateful for every member whatever their participation. We realize that not everyone is able to come to our meetings but your dues are what allows us to do the work of Philoptochos and are gratefully accepted. To join, please contact Dorothy Haskell at 425.503.4200 or [email protected].
