The subject of diversity and inclusion is an increasingly evolving multi-eth-nic community challenge in national discuss. In South Dakota, one of the greatest challenges is the issue of workforce development. Rapid national demographic changes are impacting the state of South Dakota as well. The need to initiate and address the state’s educational policy is urgent in order to harness the potentials of the growing multi-ethnic diversity.

What can we do to attract the new American pro-fessionals into the workforce of the state? How do we create an “education bridging policy” to make it easy for new American college-age youth to access college education?

Over one hundred years, community and tech-nical colleges are known to play a pivotal role in education and training of multiethnic community. Community and technical colleges have contin-ued to demonstrate their ability to provide solid and bridging platforms at a good value. They also function as important engines of workforce development for local and state wide multiethnic communities.

It is generally believed that the success of any twenty-first century community is hinged on

skilled workforce, expansion of opportunities for rigorous research –based education, and training based on inclusive philosophy. Community and technical college education have been identified to be an important vehicle for building effective workforce and a bridging platform for the new American college age youth to access college education. Investing resources and generating public debate with the view to building public supports for future legislative changes are now essential. South Dakota seems to be the only state in the nation with no defined community and technical college public-funded policy. For any society to thrive, public funded community and technical college education is indispensable. It is a very important issue for debate in the twenty-first century.

In view of the rapid changes in multi-ethnic demographic reality in the state of South Dakota , the Global Voice multi-media platform calls for a statewide debate to build public support for community and technical college system as a bridging platform for new American professionals, immigrant college-age youth, and high school graduates needing to identify their vocational/career path. We at the Global Voice believe this move will be a cost effective means for attracting the new American professionals into an overall workforce development, create pathway for immigrant college-age youth to access college education, and provide platform for high school graduates to determine vocational/career path-ways that support work force development.

Sleeping is basic function for our organism and it is just as important for us as any other basic biologic function. As human beings, we normally spend one third of our lives sleeping.

Recent studies show that during sleep, out brain literally enters a cell cleansing phase that contributes to regenerating our bodies both physically and mentally. Missed sleep is impossible to get back, lack of sleep accumulates inevitably and can bring us serious short and long term consequences.

Short term, we can notice consequences during the day, such as laziness, apathy, conduct problems, poor performance in school and even increase the risk of accidents. If lack of sleep persists, our brains won’t be able to eliminate what it doesn’t need and this will start accumulating and will disturb the way we function and how our brain cells develop, with serious consequences that can lead to illnesses such as Alzheimer disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, even cancer, among others.

So sleep is essential for the human body, we must identify the cause of our lack of efficient sleep so that we can effectively correct then in an aggressive manner and “don’t lose sleep over anything.”

The most common causes for lack of sleep include: • Sleep apnea • Leg cramps • Need to urinate during the night • Movement and changing postures • Insomnia

If you are aware that you suffer from any of these problems, don’t forget to discuss them during your next visit to the doctor.

Finally, to be able to fall asleep and to have better quality of sleep, I recommend having good sleep hygiene habits, establishing routines with regular sleep schedules to go to bed and to wake up every night and every morning, reducing substances that contain caffeine and alcohol, especially at night, switch off the TV, computers and cell phones one hour before bed time and go to the bathroom right before bed… Sweet dreams! The key is to study at the University of South Dakota. Here one can prepare for various careers such as medicine, law, nursing, education, business, and social work. The Univer-sity receives US and foreign students from various parts of the world such as the China, South America, Mexico, England and Germany. The cost to attend the University of South Dakota is economical and offer financial aid and scholarships.

The University of South Dakota is the leading university of the state of South Dakota. Approximately ten thousand students make up the student community. The University is located in Vermillion, South Dakota, a small city thirty miles north of Sioux City, Iowa and fifty miles south of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The city has about ten thousand residents.

ScholarshipsThe University of South Dakota offers several scholarships for academically talented students. Applications for these scholarships are on the website: http://admissions.usd.edu/costs.

These are available during the fall and the deadline for applications is December 1st. Student grants are also available with artistic, athletic, musical, or theatrical talent.

Financial Aid Most students entering the University of South Dakota apply for and receive financial aid to cover the costs of study. Aid is administered by the federal government and the university. The aid consists of loans, student employ-ment, scholarships and grants.

To receive financial aid, students must fill out and submit the form entitled “Application for Federal Student Aid” found in the network, the site www.fasfa.ed.gov. The priority date for financial aid is April 1st.

to Open in the Fall of 2017 tests administered in English. Our students have proven this to be true on both district standardized tests as well as national standardized tests.

When asked why they would choose a Spanish Immersion education for their child, parents have replied with the following: “Our children will be bilingual, which will help them communicate with many more people and provide them additional opportunities in the workforce one day.”; “My child is exposed to several different cultures each day which will assist them in becoming a global thinker.”; “My child is learning to think, read, write, and communicate in two different languages, which will increase their higher order thinking skills.” And one simply stated, “Why wouldn’t I? It’s an incredible opportunity!”

Next fall, 526 elementary students will move into the Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School. It will be the first time in years that the K-5 Spanish Immersion Program will be under one roof and we couldn’t be more thrilled at the opportunities this provides us. We hope to make even more connections with the native Spanish speaking community in Sioux Falls and brainstorm ways to collaborate in a wide variety of ways.

There will be many volunteer and some employment opportunities for native speakers who are not fluent in English. We are excited to welcome the wide variety of cultures, dialects, and experiences that are within our community!

In the fall of 2008, 25 kindergarten students started their school year as the first class in the Spanish Immersion Program in the Sioux Falls School District. The students were all from English speaking homes, however their teacher spoke only Spanish to them throughout their school day. They were immersed in the Spanish language. Rather than the language being the topic of instruction, it is the delivery method of all classroom instruction. Students read, write, and speak the language as they go through their daily lessons. Those students are now 7th graders at Edison Middle School and have been joined in the program by more than 500 additional students who wish to be bilingual. At a very early age, they are just that.

Students in the Spanish Immersion Program are taught the same curriculum as all other Sioux Falls School District students in a traditional program, but it is taught through Spanish. You may wonder, what does this look like in a kindergarten classroom? The teacher uses a lot of gestures, repetition, and modeling. It doesn’t take long before the students understand what is expected of them. By second grade, the students also only speak Spanish in their classroom and have become quite fluent in their speaking and listening by that point.

When applying for the program, parents commit to reading in English to and with their child a minimum of 20 minutes every day. The school offers training and strategies to assist parents in fostering their child’s growth in the English language. Starting in 3rd grade, students begin to receive English Language Arts instruction focusing on vocabulary, writing conventions, and more. Students will continue to receive language arts instruction in both English and Spanish in grades 3rd-8th.

Research has shown that second language proficiency in an immersion program does not come at the expense of achievement in English or other curriculum areas. Although there usually are lags in English language arts for the first few years of the program, studies have shown that by fifth grade immersion students consistently score at the same or higher levels as non-immersion students in

What is a sole proprietorship?

A sole proprietorship is the individual business owner running a business. There

is no legal distinction between the individual owner and the business itself. As the name implies, a sole proprietorship can only have

one owner. If two or more people run a business as co-owners, then they have a partnership, whether they intended to form a partnership or not. They do not

have a sole proprietorship.

Advantages of a Sole ProprietorshipLower start-up costs. A sole proprietorship is not required to register as an entity with the state, which saves the owner the initial filing fees. Other types of business entities have filing fees that vary depending on the type of entity. But remember, if the sole proprietor uses a business name other than the owner’s name, then the owner must register the name with the state and pay a fee.

No annual reports. Other types of entities must file annual reports with the state and pay annual fees to maintain their legal status. A sole proprietorship is not required to file annual reports or pay annual filing fees.

Easy accounting. There are no specific accounting requirements for a sole proprietorship. Though it is not required, it is still good practice for business owners to keep their personal and business affairs and bank accounts separate.

Easy tax preparation. The IRS treats a sole proprietorship as a “disregarded” entity. In other words, the sole proprietorship’s income and expenses are reported in the individual owner’s federal tax returns.

Disadvantages of a Sole ProprietorshipPersonal liability. One of the most significant disadvantage of a sole proprietorship is that the sole proprietorship’s owner is personally liable for every debt and obligation of the business, even if the debts are incurred in the name of the business alone.

It may affect the transferability of business assets. A business owner who has a sole proprietorship may sign a contract or lease or secure a permit or license on behalf of the business. A sole proprietor may also sell or transfer the business. But, problems can arise when the sale or transfer of the business is intended to include the sale of leases, contracts, licenses, and permits taken out in the name of the individual owner. The problem with transferability of business assets arises because many contracts and leases, as well as other assets, may not allow assignment to another entity or person without the consent of other parties to those contracts and leases. Some types of permits cannot be transferred and must be applied for by the proposed new owner. Accordingly, a sole proprietor may find that he or she is restricted from selling or transferring contracts, licenses, or similar business assets when selling or transferring the business to another person or entity.

The culture of your company plays a big role in your success. Here are some short but important things to think about: Your Story - the great story of how you started your business and your dreams for it need to be told. You don’t have the time to be everywhere but you can influence and shape your company culture to tell it for you.

Hiring - finding the right employee is rarely easy. But if you have a great culture and you know you want to hire someone that “fits in” with it, you’re less likely to make a poor hire. El tema de la diversidad e inclusión es un desafío cada vez más grande en una comunidad en constate evolución multiétnica, discusión que se lleva a cabo a nivel nacional. En Dakota del Sur, uno de los desafíos más importantes es el tema del desarrollo de la fuerza laboral. Los cambios demográficos veloces, están impactando al estado de Dakota del Sur tam-bién. La necesidad de iniciar a poner atención a este tema, en la política

educacional del estado, es urgente para poder aprovechar el potencial que tiene una comunidad multiétnica creciente. ¿Qué podemos hacer para atraer profesionales recientemente llegados a Estados Unidos, a formar parte de la fuerza laboral en el estado de Dakota del Sur? ¿Cómo podemos crear una política que facilite a los recién llegados a Estados Unidos, en edad universitaria, a acceder a la universidad?

Durante más de 100 años, las escuelas técnicas han jugado un papel crucial en cuanto a la educación y capacitación de las comunidades multiétnicas. Las escuelas técnicas han demostrado continuamente, su habilidad para ofrecer plataformas y bases sólidas a un buen costo. También funcionan como motores para el desarrollo de la fuerzas laboral en comunidades multiétnicas a nivel local y estatal.

Se cree que el éxito de cualquier sociedad del siglo XXI, se debe a la capacitación de la fuerza laboral, la expansión de oportunidad de rigurosa investigación-basada en la educación, y el entrenamiento basado en una filosofía de inclusión. Las escuelas técnicas, han sido identificadas como un vehículo importante para construir una fuerza laboral efectiva y como plataforma puente para jóvenes recién llegados a Estados Unidos y poder acceder a educación universitaria. Invertir recursos y generar debates políticos con vistas a adquirir apoyo público para cambios futuros en la legislación, son ahora esenciales. Dakota del Sur parece ser el único estado en la nación sin tener un sistema de financiamiento público para escuelas técnicas. Para que una sociedad tenga éxito, es indispensable tener finan-ciación pública para las escuelas técnicas. Es in asunto muy importante a debatir en el siglo XXI.

En vista de los cambios demográficos multiétnicos en Dakota del Sur, la plataforma de multimedia de The Global Voice, propone un debate a nivel estatal para construir apoyo público para las escuelas técnicas y que éstas sean una plataforma puente para profesionales recién llegados a Estados Unidos, inmigrantes en edad universitaria y estudiantes de la escuela se-cundaria, que necesitan ayuda para identificar su vocación y su carrera. The Global Voice cree que este cambio será un método efectivo para atraer a profesionales recién llegados a Estados Unidos, a un mercado laboral de desarrollo y crear un sendero para inmigrantes en edad universitaria para que puedan acceder a la universidad y proveer una plataforma para que los estudiantes de secundaria, determinen su vocación y su carrera, que a su vez se integre al mercado laboral.

El sueño es una función primaria de nuestro organismo, es tan importante para nosotros como comer o como cualquier otra función biológica básica. Los seres humanos normalmente pasamos un tercio de nuestra vida durmiendo.

Estudios recientes demuestran que durante el sueño nuestro cerebro literalmente entra en una fase de limpieza celular que contribuye cada noche a que podamos regenerarnos física y mentalmente. El sueño perdido no se recupera, sino que su falta se acumula irremediablemente y podría traernos consecuencias graves a corto y a largo plazo.

A corto plazo podríamos notar consecuencias durante el día como pereza, apatía, problemas de conducta, pobre rendimiento escolar y hasta la falta de atención que pudiera aumentarnos el riesgo de accidentes. Si la falta de sueño persiste, nuestro cerebro no podrá eliminar sus desechos, estos comenzarían a acumularse y perturbarían el buen funcionamiento y desarrollo de nuestras células cerebrales, con serias consecuencias para nosotros como la enfermedad de Alzheimer, las enfermedades cardiovasculares, la diabetes, las enfermedades de origen autoinmune y hasta el cáncer entre otras.

Entonces si el sueño es fundamental para el ser humano debemos identificar las causas que nos impidan dormir eficientemente para corregirlas agresivamente, y que “nada nos quite el sueño”.

Las causas más comunes que impiden un sueño adecuado incluyen: • La apnea de sueno • Los calambres en las piernas • La necesidad de orinar en la noche • Los movimientos y cambio continuo de posturas • El insomnio o desvelo

Si reconoces que padeces algunos de estos problemas, no olvides discutirlos en tu próxima visita con tu médico.

Finalmente para conciliar mejor el sueño y que esta sea de buena calidad les recomiendo practicar una buena higiene de sueno estableciendo rutinas con horarios regulares para acostarse y levantarse cada noche y día, reducir el consumo de sustancias con cafeína y alcohol, sobre todo en la noche, apagar la televisión, computadora o teléfonos celulares una hora antes de ir a dormir y orinar justo antes de meterte a la cama… ¡Felices Sueños, ZZZZ!!!

La Universi-dad está ubicada en Vermillion, South Dakota, una ciudad trienta millas al norte de Sioux City, Iowa y cincuenta millas al sur de Sioux Falls, South Dakota . Escuela Primaria Sonia Sotomayor abrirá en otoño del 2017

de inmersión en exámenes que se realizan en inglés. Nuestros alumnos han probado que esto es cierto en los exámenes estándar del distrito como en los estándar nacionales.

Cuando preguntan los beneficios del programa de inmersión para un niño, los padres responden lo siguiente: “Nuestros hijos serán bilingües, eso les ayudara a comunicarse con muchas más personas y les dará más oportunidades en el mundo laboral algún día”; “Mi hijo es expuesto a varias culturas cada día, lo que lo ayudará a tener una mentalidad global”; “Mi hijo está aprendiendo a pensar, a leer, a escribir y comunicarse en dos idiomas distintos, lo que lo ayudará a tener un criterio más elevado en otros aspectos”. Uno dijo simplemente “¿Por qué no? ¡Es una excelente oportunidad!”

El próximo otoño, 526 alumnos de primaria, irán a la Escuela Primaria Sonia Sotomayor. Sera la primera vez en años que todos los alumnos del programa de inmersión, estarán juntos bajo el mismo techo y no podemos estar más emocionados por las oportunidades que esto nos brinda. Esperamos poder hacer más conexiones con la comunidad de habla hispana, para obtener ideas y colaboración de varios tipos.

Habrán oportunidades para realizar voluntariado y de empleo para personas de habla hispana que no hablen inglés con fluidez. ¡Estamos contentos de dar la bienvenida a una variedad de culturas, dialectos y experiencias diversas en nuestra comunidad!

En el otoño del 2008, 25 alumnos de kínder, empezaron el año escolar en el primer programa de inmersión en español en el distrito escolar de Sioux Falls. Los alumnos eran todos de hogares en los que se habla inglés, sin embargo, los maestros solo les hablaban en español durante la jornada escolar. Fueron ‘sumergidos’ en el idioma español. En lugar de ser el idioma una materia más para estudiar, es el idioma en el que se enseñan todas las materias. Los alumnos leen, escriben y hablan en español durante todas sus lecciones diarias. Estos alumnos están ya en 7timo grado en la Escuela Media Edison y a ellos, se les han sumado más de 500 alumnos que desean ser bilingües y al aprender el idioma a tan temprana edad, eso es precisamente lo que logran.

Los alumnos del programa de inmersión en español, tienen el mismo pensum académico que el resto de los alumnos en el distrito escolar de Sioux Falls, la única diferencia es que es en español. Se estarán preguntando ¿cómo es un día en el aula de Kinder? Los maestros usan muchos gestos, repiten lo que dicen y dan ejemplos. No les toma mucho tiempo a los niños entender lo que se espera de ellos. Para cuando llegan a segundo grado, los alumnos solo hablan en español en su clase y ya han adquirido un nivel alto tanto para hablar como para comprender.

Cuando se aplica al programa, los padres adquieren el compromiso de leer en inglés un mínimo de 20 minutos al día. El colegio ofrece capacitación y estrategias a los padres para ayudar a los niños a aprender inglés. Para cuando los niños llegan a tercer grado, los niños empiezan a estudiar inglés, concentrándose en vocabulario, escritura y más. Los alumnos continúan recibiendo clases de inglés y español de 3ro a 8vo grado.

Los estudios muestran que un segundo idioma, en un programa de inmersión, no afecta negativamente al idioma inglés u otras materias. Aunque hay algunos atrasos en inglés durante los primeros años en el programa, los estudios muestran también que para cuando llegan a 5to grado, los alumnos sacan las mismas calificaciones que los alumnos que no asisten al programa

¿Qué es un Propietario Único?

Un propietario único es el dueño individual operando un negocio. No hay separación

legal entre el dueño individual y el negocio. Como el nombre implica, un propietario único solo puede tener un dueño. Si dos o más personas operan un negocio como copropietarios, entonces ellos tienen una sociedad, aunque hayan querido formar una sociedad o no. Ellos no tienen un

propietario único.

¿Ventajas de un Propietario Único? Costos más bajos al empezar. Un propietario único no tiene que ser registrado como una entidad con el estado, lo cual le ahorra al dueño los costos iniciales del registro. Otros tipos de negocios tienen que pagar costos del registro dependiendo en el tipo de entidad. Pero recuerden, si el propietario único usa un nombre de negocios que no es el nombre del dueño, entonces el dueño tiene que registrar el nombre con el estado y pagar el costo por registrar el nombre.

No reportes anuales. Otros tipos de entidades de negocios tienen que presentar reportes anuales al estado y pagar costos de registro anuales para mantener su estatus legal. Un propietario único no tiene que presentar reportes anuales ni tiene que pagar costos de registro anuales.

Contabilidad fácil. No hay requisitos específicos de contabilidad para propietarios únicos. Anuqué no es necesario, es bueno para los dueños de negocios el mantener sus asuntos personales y de negocios y sus cuentas de banco separadas.

Preparación de impuestos fácil. El IRS trata un propietario único como una entidad “no considerada.” En otras palabras, los ingresos y los costos del propietario único son reportados con los impuestos federales del dueño individual.

Desventajas de Un Propietario Único. Responsabilidad personal. Una de las desventajas más significantes de un propietario único es que el dueño de un propietario único es personalmente responsable por todas las deudas y obligaciones del negocio, aun si las deudas fueron obtenidas bajo el nombre del negocio solamente.

Puede afectar la habilidad de transferir bienes del negocio. Un dueño de un negocio quien tiene un propietario único puede firmar un contrato u obtener una licencia o u permiso a nombre del negocio. Un propietario único también puede vender o transferir el negocio. Pero, problemas pueden surgir cuando la venta o transferencia del negocio intenta incluir la venta de contratos, licencias, o permisos, los cuales están a nombre del dueño individualmente. Los bienes pueden no permitir la transferencia a otra entidad o persona sin el consentimiento de las otras personas involucradas en esos contratos. Algunos tipos de permisos no pueden ser transferidos y deben ser obtenidos por los dueños nuevos personalmente. Por eso, un propietario único puede encontrar que él o ella tiene prohibido vender o transferir contratos, licencias, u otros bienes de negocios similares cuando venda o transfiera el negocia a otra persona o entidad.

Uno puede “sentir” la cultura de la empresa cuando uno la visita, ya que se puede ver en el comportamiento y entusiasmo de la gente y en el espacio físico. Suena poderoso y realmente lo es. La cultura de su empresa juega un papel importante en el éxito que tenga. Aquí encontrará una lista corta pero importante, de cosas en las que debe pensar:

Su historia – Es importante hablar de la historia de cómo empezó su empresa y los sueños que tiene para ella. No hay tiempo para estar en todos lados, pero uno puede tener influencia en todos los aspectos de la formación de la cultura empresarial.

Proceso de Selección y Contratación - Encontrar a los empleados adecuados, no suele ser fácil. Pero si usted tiene una buena cultura y sabe el momento en el que quiere contratar a alguien que “encaja” con esa cultura, es menos probable que se equivoque. Contratar a la persona equivocada, es un error que le puede costar miles de dólares, ya que hay que entrenarlos y mucho más.
