14. Lebanon humanitarian crisis, 2006Between 12 July and 13 August 2006, the conflict across the border between Lebanon and Israel claimed over 1300 lives, injured more than 4000 people and displaced more than 900 000 people of the Lebanese population, of which more than 150 000 sought refuge into Syria. Most returned home immediately after the ceasefire, although movement was impeded by the large number of cluster bombs scattered across the southern areas. Basic public health functions were disrupted and health facilities were damaged. Roads and bridges were damaged, limiting access to health facilities and provision of fuel, drugs, and medical supplies were disrupted.

WHO and other international agencies supported the country in its recovery efforts, providing assistance with food, medical supplies, water and non-food items and services where needed.

Vaccination campaign Lebanon

In August 2006 a stepped-up vaccination campaign by the Lebanese Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, along with WHO and UNICEF was launched in a park in downtown Beirut. Sanayeh Park was home to some 1000 people, displaced by fighting in Southern Lebanon as well as the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut. The stepped-up campaign targeted children living in areas such as the park, as well as those living in schools and institutions. The campaign targeted more than 100,000 children. Injectable Measles vaccine was given to children from 9 months of age to 15 years. Oral polio vaccine was given to children aged five months to five years old, and all received Vitamin A supplementation.
