model refinement package for the CLS-Class (C/X218).

The topics surrounding this refinement are covered by two AKUBIS® direct special programs.

Part 1 of the program deals with individual scopes of the model refinement package in an over-

view, including the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and the audio generation 5 star 1, while the

second AKUBIS® direct special program explores these topics in detail.

After you have seen the AKUBIS® direct special program, you can take the final test.

2.1 Exterior

Front design

The combination of high-quality design elements characterizes the dynamic, unmistakable front

section of the CLS-Class. The newly designed front with a diamond radiator grille in black and a

superimposed slat draws particular attention. The air inlet grilles in the front bumper have also

been enlarged to create an even more dynamic appearance.

The diamond radiator grille is available in chrome with a slat for the CLS 500 and CLS 500 4M as well as for the AMG Line special equipment package (950). For all other engines, the dia-mond radiator grille is fitted in black with a matching slat as standard.

On CLS 63 AMG vehicles, the radiator grille fea-tures a double slat in silver chrome and AMG let-tering.

Side design

The coupé-specific side profile with dynamic lines has largely remained the same. The new heat

insulating, tinted glass special equipment package for the rear side and rear windows (code

840) protects against direct solar radiation.

Rear design

The CLS-Class comes with one of three exhaust systems and rear bumpers, depending on the

engine or equipment installed.

Four and six-cylinder models come with hidden exhaust tailpipes as standard equipment.

Eight-cylinder models and models fitted with the exterior sports package have a rear bumper

that integrates rectangular exhaust tips.

AMG versions come with two rectangular exhaust tips inserted on each side of the bumper.

The design of the rear lamps was also revised. The rear lamps are now slightly tinted as com-

pared to vehicles manufactured before the model refinement package was introduced.

2.3 Interior

Sportiness, exclusiveness and functionality are accentuated even more in the CLS with model

refinement package.

The free-standing color display of the head unit and a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel

lend the vehicle interior an even more modern touch.

The multifunction steering wheel with a perforated handling area is wrapped in nappa leather as

standard. Operation is facilitated by twelve ergonomically arranged control buttons. Those who

opt for the AMG Line receive a multifunction sport steering wheel with a flattened bottom sec-

tion.

New color schemes can be ordered for the interior. The seat adjustment controls in the front

doors also contribute to the visual enhancement of the interior. These are now electroplated in

silver shadow.

Modifications were likewise implemented for the center console. Now, the central operating

unit is surrounded by four control buttons.

2.4 Overview of infotainment, navigation, and communication

The 2014 model refinement package for the CLS-Class includes changes to the telematics.

Telematics generation NTG 4.5 is replaced with NTG 5 Star 1. New Telematics Generation

NTG 5 Star 1 offers intuitive operation and experience of the functions as well as animated

menus and depictions on a free-standing display of the head unit.

LTE (Long Term Evolution)-compatible exterior vehicle antenna. LTE is also referred to as the fourth-generation mobile phone standard and successor of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). LTE enables location-based wireless broadband Internet access depending on the respective provider and mobile phone contract. The transfer rates achievable can vary, depending on the mobile telephone network (provider), the mobile phone contract (the transfer rates specified therein), and the hardware used (mobile phone). Download speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 75 Mbit/s are possible.

Bluetooth® telephony via Wideband Speech or HD Voice

Enables speech to be transferred with almost double the frequency spectrum. This leads to a subjectively perceived improvement in the quality of the phone connection while al-so increasing speech intelligibility. 2.5 Headlamp systems

The CLS-Class with the 2014 model refinement package comes with LED high-performance

headlamps as standard. These headlamps implement all light functions using LED's.

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are standard on AMG versions and can be ordered as special

equipment for all other model versions. This headlamp version includes the ILS (Intelligent Light

System) and Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus functions.

Maintenance and repair

The basic setting of the headlamps is checked by the headlamp aimer. The exact work proce-

dure for actuation and configuration can be found in the Workshop Information System (WIS).

After the headlamps or a control unit are replaced, the QR code must be read in and coded.

2.6 Overview of driving assistance systems

The driving assistance systems support the driver in various situations, either actively or pas-

sively in accordance with their configuration. In both cases, the driving assistance systems con-

tribute to driving safety. This helps to reduce the frequency of accidents and their consequenc-

es. Ride comfort is also increased.

Many driving assistance systems have been enhanced with the 2014 model refinement pack-

age or have been added to this model series.

The driving assistance package, for example, includes DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist, Ac-

tive Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Blind Spot Assist.

2.7 Overview of Parking Assist systems

The Parking Assist systems help the driver when pulling into/out of a parking space and ma-

neuvering the vehicle. These systems are active or passive, depending on their configuration. In

all cases, the Parking Assist systems contribute to further improving ride comfort and road

safety.

3.1 Parking Assist systems in detail

Active Parking Assist

The parking system uses an ultrasound measuring system to record the vehicle's distance from

an obstacle. During forward travel at speeds below 36 km/h, longitudinal and transverse park-

ing spaces on both sides of the vehicle are measured and saved. The vehicle can then park or

exit the parking space semi-automatically as requested by the driver.

The detected size of the parking space is used by the control unit to calculate the steering mo-

tions required to park the vehicle. When the respective end points are reached, the vehicle au-

tomatically brakes and a prompt to change the direction of travel appears on the multifunction

display.

Frequently asked questions regarding the Active Parking Assist function:

Does the turn signal on the driver side need to be activated for the system to detect the parking space on the driver side? No. Two ultrasonic sensors continually detect potential parking spaces on both sides during forward travel. The system uses an activated turn signal as an indicator of the direction in which the vehicle is to be parked.

Which parking spaces are detected by the system and how long are they saved? The system detects longitudinal and transverse parking spaces. The spaces detected are saved in the control unit over a travel distance of 16 meters.

Is the driver always offered assistance for exiting a parking space semi automatically? The vehicle must have already been parked semi-automatically for the driver to receive as-sistance exiting the parking space.

The cameras for the system are accommodated in the radiator grille, outside mirror housings,

and trunk lid or liftgate.

All camera images are shown on the free-standing display. The left third is reserved for the top

view (bird's eye view). The content of the right display area can be changed by the driver.

Garmin® MAP PILOT

The CLS-Class is equipped with Audio 20 CD (code 505) as a standard (depending on the mar-

ket). The Audio CD (code 505) is non-navigation-capable. Customers looking for an Au-

dio 20 CD system with navigation must order the system with preinstallation for the Garmin®

MAP PILOT (code 522). The navigation function itself is realized by inserting a Garmin® SD card

(e.g. code 357). The map data for navigating is stored on the Garmin® MAP PILOT SD card. The

Garmin® MAP PILOT SD card must remain plugged in for navigation, as the map data is not in-

stalled on the head unit. Once the Garmin® MAP PILOT SD card has undergone initial startup

on one vehicle, it can no longer be used on another vehicle!

Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system

The Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system offers 360-degree high-fidelity sound

at all seating positions in the vehicle. Carefully coordinated technical components and the Log-

ic 7® technology from Harman Kardon provide for an unmistakably authentic surround sound.

Both front and rear-seat passengers enjoy impressive 360-degree high-fidelity sound for stereo

and 5.1 multi-channel recordings. The sound system, with its 14 high-performance speakers

and a total output of up to 610 W, has been specifically adapted to the special acoustic charac-

teristics of the vehicle. The speed-dependent volume control (SDV [GAL]) also ensures that the

volume is constantly adjusted to the speed of the vehicle so that the listening experience is al-

ways the same.



Bang & OlufsenBeoSound AMG

The Bang & OlufsenBeoSound AMG sound system turns the vehicle into a concert hall. This

high-end surround sound system, which was developed together with Bang & Olufsen, uses 14

active high-end speakers with neodymium magnets and a 1,400 W BeoCore amplifier to provide

a music experience like no other. The innovative Bang & Olufsen technologies ensure perfect

sound propagation and crystal clear playback regardless of the seat position. The BeoCore am-

plifier designed to match vehicle conditions sets standards in performance, efficiency, and out-

put quality. The "acoustic lens technology" employed in the tweeters realizes the typical virtual

sound stage in front of the passengers. Dynamic compensation of driving noise also ensures

non-tiring musical enjoyment on long journeys. The high design standards of Bang & Olufsen

components is evidenced in such details as the LED illumination in the tweeters and the high-

quality aluminum speaker covers in silver chrome, which also provide for a performance-

optimized connection.

ATTENTION ASSIST

ATTENTION ASSIST can detect typical signs of fatigue by the drive style of the driver and warn

him/her of potentially increasing levels of fatigue or unawareness.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS combines radar-assisted distance warnings, braking as-

sistance via Adaptive Brake Assist and autonomous partial braking to minimize the danger of

rear-end collisions.

DISTRONIC PLUS

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop & Go Pilot now also offers convenient lateral guid-

ance assistance in addition to distance control, thus making it easier to drive on long journeys

and navigate traffic jams in particular

BAS PLUS

BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist can reduce the risk of rear-end and intersection accidents

as well as assist the driver during emergency braking by providing additional brake pressure;

new is the active response of the system to cross traffic and pedestrians.

PRE-SAFE® brake

PRE-SAFE® Brake warns the driver of a potential collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian

(new) and can reduce speed automatically as well as initiate emergency braking if the driver

does not provide a response; the latter can now also prevent an accident from occurring.



Active Lane Keeping Assist

Active Lane Keeping Assist can warn the driver of unintentionally leaving a lane and pulse the

brakes on one side of the vehicle (brake intervention) to move it back into the lane (new: includ-

ing dotted lane markings) if there is a risk of collision.

Active Blind Spot Assist

Active Blind Spot Assist can warn the driver of any vehicles in the blind spot when changing

lanes and pulse the brakes on one side of the vehicle (brake intervention) to avoid a collision.

PRE-SAFE® PLUS enhances the preventive PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system to include

safety precautions that are taken when a rear-end collision is about to occur.

Traffic Sign Assist

Traffic Sign Assist can detect speed limits, restricted access zones and overtaking bans as well

as recognize when they are lifted and display this information to the driver; for restricted ac-

cess zones with corresponding signage, a visual and acoustic warning are also output.

3.4 MULTIBEAM LED headlamps

The new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps on the CLS-Class make it possible to produce different

lighting scenarios. These include welcoming light, country light, motorway light, and active

curve light.

Welcoming light

When the vehicle is unlocked, welcoming light welcomes the driver by producing an exceptional

lighting scheme. The headlamps first illuminate in yellow, then activate a blue LED that accen-

tuates the "Mercedes-Benz" lettering and finally transition to white locator lighting.

Function

Each headlamp integrates 36 LEDs to ensure that the road is illuminated in the best way possi-

ble. Of these 36 LEDs, 24 can be individually controlled and actuated for the high beam func-

tions. This allows the light emitted to always be produced exactly where it is needed. A total of

4 control units calculate the ideal light distribution pattern 100 times per second and use the

information provided by a camera positioned behind the windshield.

When the high beams are switched on, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus ensures that the head-

lamp range is optimally set at all times. The driver can then devote all attention to driving and

no longer needs to continue changing from the high beams to the low beams and vice versa.

The multifunction camera enables the system to detect illuminated oncoming or leading vehi-

cles and automatically adapts the headlamps to the new traffic situation.

Country and motorway light

Country light illuminates the side of the road brighter and uses a bigger beam of light than tra-

ditional low beams. This enables the driver to have better overall orientation and respond more

quickly.



This lighting effect allows the driver to see approximately 50 meters further than with conven-

tional low beams.

If the current navigation data points to an upcoming motorway situation, the control units ad-

just the light distribution accordingly for optimal illumination. The light cone is then slightly

lowered on the driver side to minimize the dazzling effect for oncoming vehicles. This reduces

the risk of dazzling oncoming trucks and focuses the attention of the driver on the road. De-

pending on the traffic situation, the motorway partial high beams function is activated with a

light aperture to avoid dazzling other road users on the motorway by focusing the aperture in a

targeted manner.

The LEDs of the high-beam modules are partially switched off and switched back on again and

create a U-shaped light aperture.

Active curve lights

The active curve lights function allows the headlamps to swivel in the direction of the curve to

illuminate the road considerably better. With the Lane package or Driving Assistance package

Plus, anticipatory curve detection is possible. The active curve lights function illuminates the

curve before the steering wheel is turned and swivels the headlamps back before the curve is

exited. Dangers can therefore be detected at an earlier point. This function uses the infor-

mation provided by the camera positioned behind the windshield. The active curve lights is

therefore available regardless of the quality or up-to-dateness of the navigation data.

Cornering lights with roundabout function

An additional LED light source in the headlamp improves illumination of the road at night when

turning and traveling through tight curves. When the steering wheel reaches a certain angle, the

cornering lights on the respective side of the vehicle automatically activate. The cornering lights

are also activated during reverse travel and when the turn signal indicator is used below

40 km/h. Activation and deactivation take place in a harmonious dimming sequence. The posi-

tions of the roundabouts on the journey are determined in combination with COMAND Online.

This makes it possible to activate the cornering lights with roundabout function before the ve-

hicle enters one of the roundabouts. The driver can then detect potential dangers such as pe-

destrian crossings and approaching cyclists at an earlier point.

Extended fog light function

The extended fog light function can be activated below 70 km/h and as soon as the rear fog

lamp is switched on. The headlamp on the driver side is then pivoted 8 degrees outward and

the light cone is lowered. As a result, the outer half of the traffic lane is illuminated more bright-

ly and the self-dazzling effect produced as a result of the light reflected by the fog is minimized.

The extended fog light function remains switched on up to a speed of 100 km/h.

3.5.1 Mercedes me

On the occasion of the 84th International Auto Salon in Geneva, Mercedes-Benz presented its

latest service mark Mercedes me.

Under the new Mercedes me umbrella brand Mercedes-Benz bundled all existing and upcom-

ing service offers. Mercedes me is grouped into the five areas moveme , connectme , as-

sistme , financeme and inspireme. Via these services, all product-related topics such as ve-

hicle purchasing, financing and maintenance and the internationally successful mobility ser-

vices of Daimler are taken into consideration.

What do each of these services actually stand for:

Mercedes moveme provides intelligent mobility solutions, irrespective of whether or not the user owns a car. With moovel, car2go, car2go black and Park2gether, moovel GmbH is working on offering people a wide range of individual mobility services. Furthermore, stra-tegic partnerships provide customers with more freedom of choice such as the smartphone-based taxi cab agency MyTaxi, the Blacklane chauffeur service portal and long-distance bus provider FlixBus.

Mercedes connectme makes it possible for customers to connect with the vehicle any-where, anytime. The connectivity services include accident, maintenance and breakdown management, the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system and telediagnosis. The customer knows where he has parked his/her vehicle via "Remote Online", whether the doors are locked, and how full the fuel tank is. The stationary heater can also be switched on using “RemoteOnline”. Mercedes-Benz Apps provide the latest information and thus make indi-vidual mobility an increasingly more comfortable feature.

Mercedes assistme provides a personal service that is tailored to individual requirements for Mercedes-Benz drivers at calculable service cost (round the clock, anywhere). This in-cludes online access to the service as well as automated appointment-booking functions. Any driver can also find and contact the Mercedes-Benz partner of his/her choice online.



Mercedes financeme provides the customer with made-to-measure financial services for his/her vehicle, and provides convenient access to the range of services provided by Daimler Financial Services. This includes a flexible and attractive financing solution through individual leasing offers up to a suitable insurance policy for the required vehicle.

Mercedes inspireme provides insights into the world of research and development at Mercedes-Benz, and is also much more than an information portal with interesting stories about innovation, technology and mobility: The customer can accompany the creation of innovative business concepts by Mercedes-Benz via a community. He can enter into dis-cussion with experts from various areas thereby experiencing the development of new technologies and services in even earlier while also being able to introduce his own ideas and suggestions.

Mercedes me is not just an online platform, it is in fact visualized right across all the commu-

nication channels. Starting in the summer of 2014 the brand offer can be accessed through a

personalized Mercedes ID on the www.mercedes.me website. The intention for the future is for

the customer to have access to all of the individual services of Mercedes-Benz from a single

source. The website is available in both English and German and it works on all mobile devices.



3.5.2 Mercedes connect me

The introduction of Mercedes connectme is starting with the wagon of the C-Class (S205) in

September 2014, and will then be phased into other models. Mercedes connectme is being int-

roduced in 15 European markets.

Automatic emergency call func-tion when restraint systems are triggered or manual triggering by means of SOS button in overhead control panel

Telediagnosis

Predictability of wear and failure by means of monitoring of diagno-sis-compatible components, thereby helping to ensure cus-tomer mobility while also prevent-ing any consequential costs based on advance detection of risks.

Maintenance management

Automatic transmission of maintenance-relevant data from vehicle, enabling reduction of breakdown risk because customer is contacted in advance regarding any maintenance-relevant topics.

Accident management

Depending on the customer's condition (physical condition, re-sponsiveness), a connection is made to the Call Center (CAC) af-ter eCall has been triggered, whereby rapid support and assis-tance can be rendered to the people involved in the accident.

Breakdown assistance ma-nagement

Automatic transmission of rele-vant vehicle data in a breakdown case (button in overhead control panel) enables fast and targeted breakdown assistance by means of direct data transfer and analy-sis to a Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center.

Vehicle position

Locating his/her own vehicle within a radius of approx. 1.5 km allows the customer to conven-iently find the vehicle using his/her smartphone and the Mer-cedes connectme service via the map display.

Vehicle locating

The vehicle's current position da-ta are used to locate vehicles. For legal data protection reasons, the driver in the vehicle is notified that his/her journey is currently being monitored (tracking). The driver can deactivate this function by making a toll-free call to the CAC .

Remote query of vehicle status

The vehicle as a data record on the Internet that can be called up, for remote information, enables important vehicle data (km read-ing, next due service, fuel level, etc.) to be called up on PC, smartphone and Tablet PC.

Configuration of Mercedes-Benz Apps

Mercedes connectme customers can use RemoteOnline to define the sequence in which Mercedes-Benz Apps are to be displayed in the vehicle.

Stationary heater programming (***)

Controlling the stationary heater with an extended range of func-tions in comparison to radio re-mote control makes it possible to control and program all functions via PC, smartphone and tablet de-vices.

Live Traffic Information

The use of this service makes it possible to receive up-to-date and precise traffic information for op-timized dynamic destination-oriented navigation and accurately calculated arrival times. Data is transferred with the aid of a communications module over a fast mobile Internet connection.

Note: Live Traffic Information is only availa-ble in certain markets. Live Traffic Information is not available in the markets of Ireland, Slovakia and Czech Republic.

Door remote locking and un-locking (*)

Remote unlocking and locking of the own vehicle enables damage-free unlocking of the vehicle if the key has been left in the vehicle or locking of the vehicle if any uncer-tainty exists regarding whether the vehicle was locked upon leav-ing it.

Geographical vehicle monito-ring (*)

The customer can define individu-al areas online on Mercedes con-nectme that the vehicle should not leave or should not drive into. If the vehicle leaves this area or drives into it anyway, the custom-er is notified by text message.

Mercedes connectme offers many advantages and new options to the customer. On the other

hand, complexity is increased due to the networking of available systems as well as newly cre-

ated systems. Especially due to the networking of the customer's environment via Mercedes

me or Mercedes connectme through services for the vehicle, new interfaces are created. It

therefore has to be clarified when there is a customer query whether the issue must be re-

solved in the system (IT) or in the vehicle. This overview will serve you as a first orientation
