Why Port of Zeebrugge?

The Port of Zeebrugge ranks at the top of the world’s leading ports for the export and import of new cars. In total,

no less than 2.5 million new vehicles were handled in 2015. This allows the Port of Zeebrugge to act as an inter-

continental and European hub. These car units arrive and depart with various short sea and deep-sea operators,

which dock at dedicated terminals in the port such as ICO, WWL, Toyota, CldN, P&O and Van der Vlist. In addition

to the carriers, almost all major car manufacturers have put their confidence in the Port of Zeebrugge. Automo-

tive companies do not only use the port for the transport of finished vehicles, they also use it for the logistics

of spare parts and components. Shipping companies mainly operate in the inner port, where over 330 hectares

have been put at the disposal of the automotive sector. In addition to finished vehicles, the Port of Zeebrugge has

a leading position in the transport and logistics of oversized and project cargoes, such as agricultural machines,

excavators and machine components.

When it comes to High & Heavy and oversized cargo, The Port of Zeebrugge is well known for accommodating

units that need expert handling. More than 70,000 of these H & H units, including buses, oversized trucks,

cranes, wind turbines, agricultural machines, etc., were moved through the port in 2015. This cargo is moved

by the many deep-sea and short sea shipping companies operating in the port. In addition to the transport of

project cargo, the companies within the Port of Zeebrugge also provide a broad range of value-added services

ranging from High & Heavy pre-delivery and inspection to paint booths, assembly or disassembly and optional

instalments. The well-connected hinterland can be reached by road with dedicated transport and distribution

companies or by rail and barge. For example, the estuary barge ‘Polybotes’ has been modified especially for mo-

ving project cargo. Complete factories already passed through the Port of Zeebrugge by combining all transport

modes at our High & Heavy world hub.
