By 2030, we aim to protect and restore nature for the benefit of people and theplanet by ensuring that 50 per cent of land and sea is conserved, restored, sustainably managed and climate resilient (spatial goal); prevent the sixth massextinction (wildlife goal); and halve GHG emissions and consumption andproduction related footprint (GHG and footprint goal). By achieving these goals,we will ensure that we have a sustainable and healthy planet and that we areliving within planetary boundaries by 2050.

Kavita invited Maurício Voivodic, WWF-Brazil CEO; Nanie Ratsifandri-hamanana, WWF-Madagascar CEO; and Tanya Steele, WWF-UK CEO, toshare with the rest of the network leaders how they think these new goals canbe translated and implemented at a local level. While there was broad supportfor the new goals, it was recommended that we need to have indicators andbaselines available as soon as possible. Also, there was agreement that thespatial goal needs to be broken down further so that there is clarity aroundeach country and region’s contribution.

The session on Inclusive Area Based Conservation started before andcontinued after lunch and it generated a lot of thought-provoking discussionsand incredible insights from both donor and implementing offices.

Clotilde Ngomba, WWF-Cameroon Director, shared why Inclusive Area BasedConservation is critical in managing key areas in her country. She also sharedsome of the challenges of doing this work and implored network leaders tocome up with practical solutions that will respond to the realities on the ground.

Kirsten Schuijt, WWF-Netherlands CEO, touched on the role and responsibilityof funding offices in strengthening the capacity of implementing offices andensuring that donors understand the realities of Inclusive Area BasedConservation.
