The worldwide market for blood glucose monitoring is mainly dependent on the number of diabetes patients in the world which is growing
significantly and is expected to grow even further in the near future. As a result, the worldwide market for glucose monitoring devices
should also grow. There is no cure for diabetes and it can only be controlled. In order to control it, blood glucose monitoring is mandatory.
Diabetes can be of 2 types i.e. type I and type II. Type II diabetes is so far more prevalent compared to type I. The type I diabetes can be
monitored with the help of regular glucose monitoring devices and self monitoring blood glucose monitoring devices. Regular glucose
monitoring is done with the help of standard hand prick glucose monitors. This segment contributes the major share of total sales of blood
glucose monitoring industry. The blood glucose test strips which are required for glucose tests are disposable which means there is a
steady growth opportunity in the glucose test strip market.
Continuous glucose monitoring is mainly required for type I diabetes patients or patients very high blood glucose level. A type I diabetes is
less prevalent; the market for CGM (Continuous glucose monitoring) devices is smaller compared to Regular glucose monitoring market.
CGM is a costlier procedure and is not covered automatically by medical insurances which also affect the sales of this particular segment.
CGM is an invasive procedure and operation is required to place the sensor in the patient’s body. As soon as the reimbursement of CGM
improves, the market should perform better.
