Preliminary GBD Expert Group Estimates of Global Number of Persons in 2010 with
Blind and Visual Impairment:
33.5 million Blind199 million MSVI
(29.6-38.1)
(177-231)
Trends
• The prevalence of blindness and MSVI has decreased in the last 20 years, despite the relative increase in older adults in the world population
• However, due to population growth, the estimates suggest that absolute blind population has been stable and the population with MSVI has increased.
