We spend each day in such a vibrant and lively community. We have so much to be proud of... and so much to be thankful for. As you read the stories about your neighbors... I hope that GLF-Style becomes a resource that you can depend on for both timely and newsworthy information. We want to be your resource for upcoming events in our area. This is the first edition of GLF-Style... and my first letter to the readers. I am so proud to be a part of 'Team Curtis'. I sincerely hope you want to become a part of the team after learning more about Mitochondrial Disease. You can learn more about 'how you can help Curtis' in our feature article on page 12. Each of us are involved in our own busy lifestyles and we have so much we can learn from each other. I hope that together we can share our ideas and our stories... and that I can feature your articles in future publications. With over 2,500 homes in our area... we have both a wealth and richness of opportunity in which to engage each other. As a resident of Gleannloch Farms... I hope to meet as many of you as possible (while keeping up with my own family)... and I want to personally thank you for reading our publication. Take care,

With the holidays, come the party invites. Here in Texas we don't know if the weather will be bitter cold or spike up to 83 degrees. What to wear is the question? The dress code is always the same "Holiday Casual". And, you're thinking what the heck does that mean? Well here in Spring Texas it is jeans. If you want to go the denim route, make it dark wash, trouser jean and of course a big belt bucket.(Unless you travel to New Jersey).

You never know what the night will hold so it's always a good idea to have a causal sweater on hand also. The look of the layer t-shirts is very chic - just like Misty Stallings and this will give you the ability to change your look into the night. Long necklaces are very hip this year and Tina Elder and Lisa Burnett have given their outfits the bling that it deserves. Don't forget an evening purse. It's an wonderful accessory that can offer some color to your look. Plus you can always hide the extra cookies from all those holiday parties that you attend. Hey you have to take the kids home something from your night out. Cheers!

On October 2nd, over 130 members of the National Charity League, Inc., Wildflowers Chapter, gathered in downtown Houston for the 20th anniversary of the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure. In the early morning darkness at 3:45 am. They gathered to create and assemble all of the balloon arches and balloons bouquets that were seen throughout the event. The group of mothers and daughters dawned their trademark blue volunteer t-shirts as they made the balloon arches that welcomed the 35,000 race participants. Each year the Wildflowers Chapter supports this and over a dozen other local philanthropies. NCL is a national organization whose mission is to foster the mother-daughter relationship in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

Gleannloch Farms was well represented by 26 Wildflowers members: Kristen & Tammy Soza, Frannie & Stacey Smith, Cassidy & Terri Latham, Kelly & Dawn Kirk, Katie Kimball & Tiffany Gullung, Caroline & Karen Robertson, Kamran & Christina Hemeyer, Adria & Katrina Martinez, Claire & Debra Sexton, Katherine & Teresa Nornes, Alanna & Stacy Vollands, Emily & Isis Shrode, and Makenna & Brooke Murray.

ecorating Your Home for the Holidays

Like the song goes, the holiday season is “the most wonderful time of the year.” When decorating your home for the holidays, it should be just as fun and exciting as the rest of your holiday experience. If you are looking for a place to start or are overwhelmed by this holiday design task, just remember to take it step by step and ENJOY!

• Decide on colors and a consistent theme. An easytip is to think of the style and décor of your home and reflect that style into a common theme for Christmas decorations (i.e. Tradition, Rustic, Whimsical, Elegant, etc.)

• Focus on which areas of your home you want to embellish and how much of any decorations are needed. Be it your kitchen, living room, entryway or even the back yard, a Christmas tree, garland, lights, ribbon, and variety of ornaments are a must. These items and ideas on how to use these items can be found at Eklektik Interiors.

• Get your product and go for it – focusing on one area or room at a time can help. Don’t be afraid to use “real” product – go outside and find some holly or fresh pine to use around your house. It’s cost efficient and adds a warm touch to the home.

• Most importantly, don’t be afraid to integrate the one thing that makes Christmas a magical time – family tradition

Remember that the holidays are a time to be celebrated, so when you are decorating feel free to go a little over the top – the more the “merrier!” Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Eklektik Interiors!

Let’s Find a Cure for Curtis

When Curtis was born he was a happy, little boy, with no sign of any problems ahead. But by the age of six months Laura knew that something wasn’t quite right. He couldn’t sit up and other motor skills were not on pace for his age. His pediatrician termed him to be a “floppy baby” which means that he had inadequate tone of his muscles. At one year old, Curtis was still not crawling or pulling up to a standing position. By now, both parents and doctors agreed that medical testing must begin. Through countless tests and therapy sessions he was finally diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease.

Mitochondrial Disease is a genetic disorders that result from failures of the mitochondria which are the “power plants” inside living cells. They are responsible for 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When mitochondria fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of the person is severely compromised, changed or even ended. Currently there is no cure.

When you look at Curtis on the outside, you cannot tell immediately that he has a life threatening medical condition. However, Curtis is

far from being like his friends. Everyday life is exhausting for Curtis. Just going to school and doing homework wipes him out. Because using your brain also requires energy, he has a hard time studying. He cannot get too hot or cold and therefore cannot play outside with his friends. He cannot ride a bicycle because he does not have the muscle strength to peddle. Curtis cannot play sports. Curtis takes 26 vitamin pills each day. A simple cold could be life threatening for Curtis. Curtis has a 20% chance of surviving his teenage years.

What can you do to help Curtis? Tell your family, friends, and other people about Mitochondrial Disease and join our efforts in raising money to find a Cure for Curtis. On Saturday, February 5, 2011, The Houston Chapter of United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and the Jackson Family, invite you to join us for Christopher’s Energy For Life Walk. The walk will be held at Sam Houston Park downtown and begins at 10am. To register for, or donate to Team Curtis 2011 go to www.CureCurtis.com. Team Curtis 2011 is also looking for “sponsors who care”. If you are interested in sponsoring Team Curtis 2011 or would like more information, please use the “contact” tab located in www.CureCurtis.com.

Without the presence of flowers, any occasion will be incomplete and Christmas

is no different. You can find a variety of flowers that are popular gifts or used for

decoration on the day of Christmas.

The Poinsettia is presumably the most renowned Christmas flower around the world. 'Flower of the Holy Night', 'Flame Leaf', 'Christmas flower' and 'Lobster flower' are all names used to describe this stunning flower. They are considered a universal symbol for Christmas.

The Christmas Cactus is the second most popular houseplant for the holiday season. Since the Christmas Cacus plant blooms in winter, from November until February, they make a perfect plant to warm up any room during the fall and winter season.

Holly with green leaves and red berries are also usually usually associated with Christmas and a large Vase with holly branches can become a colorful centerpiece for any holiday meal.which represents love and harmony.

Whether you are decorating your home with flowers, or sending fresh flowers to loved ones, flowers are one Christmas gift that will light up any room.

Bubba In A TruckAll too often honest people save their hard earned money to update a piece of their world we all call home. Unfortunately, the excitement of starting the makeover clouds their judgment and we overlook the simplest of details.

David Connery is the Owner of Bella Vita Builders, is a proud member of the GHBA and has earned an accreditation from the BBB by upholding honorable ethics as a determining factor in daily business operations. For more information please visit www.BellaVitaBuilders.com or call 281.914.0864.

• Know Your Contractor: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that the contractor who walked from the job “seemed like a nice guy”. Now granted, references are typically cherry picked but call anyway to investigate the demeanor of the contractor. Further, is the company a member of the GHBA (Greater Houston Builders Association) or the BBB? “Fly by night” or “Bubba in a truck” contractors need not apply to either organization

• Get It In Writing: Does the contract cover contingencies such as insurance and waiver of subrogation? Change orders? Remedies for breach of contract? The contractual agree-ment needs to cover both parties and define the course of action if disagreements arise.

• Progress Payments: The contract should also clearly define payment upon progress. You are not the Builder’s bank!! Be specific as to when payments are due based on the progress of the project. .

• Obtain a Lien Release and All Bills Paid Affidavit: Before the final check is written to your contractor be sure to ask for a notarized statement, or an ‘All Bills Paid Affidavit’ which certifies that all sub-contractor and supplier bills have been paid

This isn't David Connery, he is better lookingand much smarter

The journey of publishing a novel is never straight. It's full of scary moments: the joy of finding an agent and finally meeting a publisher who is enthusiastic about your words. Karen Kincy made that journey, and her first mystery novel, Diminished Responsibility is now a reality.

"If it hadn't been for the Girl Scouts, this book might have never been written," Karen said when I ask her how she found her inspiration." We were trying to raise money for our troop and I suggested we let the girls do a mystery theater. I wrote the mystery for girls to act out and enjoyed it so much, I just continuted to write, said Karen. But to tell the truth, Karen has been writing since she was small and later in her college years she found that her way with words helped her excell in classes.

Karen, who has lived in Gleannloch Farms for four years is married with two grown children. She has just returned from a two week book tour in California and is enjoying being an author. "I am already working on my next mystery, Traffic Controller." But as Karen explained, "The new novel is less intense and has fewer dead bodies."

Diminished Responsibility is available on Amazon.com and The Book Worm in Pinehurst.

Gleannloch Boys of Fall - Go Dove Hunting

What do you do for a group of 14-15 year old Gleannloch Farms football players when you want to celebrate a birthday? Paintball? Done that. Laser tag? They outgrew that for paintball. Bowling? Boring! So how about a dove hunt? After mentioning the idea to my wife and son, birthday boy, Carter, I quickly put together an opening day dove hunt/birthday party with outfitter friend, Austin Logan, of Dos Patos Guide Service. We were also joined by some of my safari club members and their kids. I had three other Gleannloch dad’s assist in the hunt- Scott Mason, Kevin Redmond, and Tommy Ripley. Most of the boys had already taken their hunter’s safety course at a free certification class offered each summer sponsored by the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of “SCI First for Hunters” (www.scihouston.org). Since safety was priority one, we had a dad to every 2-3 hunters to assist and coach.

Four am we woke ten or so boys for a quick breakfast and an hour drive to the Katy/Rosenburg area. Excitement was in the air as we all waited for legal shooting time. We had the boys grouped in threes down a long fence row giving them plenty of room to shoot. Soon legal shooting time was upon us and shots began to erupt. We hunted most all day with a break for lunch. A great time was had by all and two boys in the group experienced their first hunt. We enjoyed the camaraderie and the high five action as each shooter usually gave a fist punch or a high five after each successful shot. A week or so later we were able to enjoy the fruits of our hunt with a fine dove gumbo cooked by Collen Ripley. The boys loved it!
