Making Connections for Life

It’s been said that a good friend is hard to find. Apparently it’s getting even harder! Here are some stun-ning figures! In 1985 the average per-son had three close friends, people they could confide in, people they felt comfortable with, people with whom they felt connected. In 2004, only around 20 years later, that number had dropped to two. Those reporting no close friends had jumped from 10% to 25%. Even the share of people re-porting a healthy circle of four or five friends dropped from 33% to just over 15%. It is amazing isn’t it? In an age of Facebook and twitter, in an age of modern communication, many people are feeling less connected than ever. What a tragedy this is! More and more it seems people are cut off from those around them; isolated and alone.

But it’s even bigger than that. As people open up about what is going on in their life they also speak of the

spiritual vacuum in their life. They feel disconnected from God. They feel as if their life is a spiritual desert; a waste land. They feel as if their life is rud-derless, a drifting with nothing of sub-stance to hold onto or give direction, meaning or purpose in their life.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we want to do something about that. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we have discovered that real life is to be enjoyed by being connected to the God who is real; to the God who is there; to the God who can be known.

We would love for you and your family to be able to join us during the week or on Sundays, where you, like many others in Glenmore Park, have the opportunity to find real life by re-connecting with God and reconnecting with others.

To find out more check out our website (see the details below), give me a call on 4733 1635 or simply turn up on Sunday – we’d love to see you!

Cumberland Zone RFS Regentville Fire Control Centre

The Rural Fire Service Cumberland Zone’s Fire Control Centre has been opened at Regentville

Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said that the centre was made possible through the close cooperation of Penrith City, Blacktown and Fairfield Councils and the State Government.

“The great thing about the Fire Control Centre is that is services such a large area,” Councillor Crameri said. “The centre is close to the freeway and in a great spot to respond to emergencies quickly. “It also has facilities for other servic-es so that when an emergency occurs the emergency ser-vices can work together, significantly enhancing our ability to respond to any crisis.

“There’s plenty of room for training, which ensures our bri-gades remain well equipped to do the very best job they can. “However, a building is only as useful as the people it hous-es and it gave me great pleasure to see some of the RFS’s longest serving members honoured with their National Med-als for dedicated service at the centre’s opening.”

Help make echidnas more comfy near School House

CreekVolunteer with your neighbours

to revive the bush around Regent-ville’s School House Creek, home to echidnas.

Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “Two echidnas were found in a local back garden near the site about a year ago and they have cer-tainly sparked interest in the neigh-bourhood. Echidnas are protected by law. Their habitat is a burrow and they eat ants and termites.

“Council works with the commu-nity to conserve important tracts of bushland and to protect and improve the biodiversity of Penrith City, so I encourage the local community to get involved. Council’s Bushland Man-agement Officer will hold an onsite meeting with interested residents for a short introduction to the area and to discuss what is involved in form-ing a Bushcare group. A qualified fa-cilitator guides and trains volunteers onsite.”

Councillor Crameri said Coun-cil was keen for community input to create a management plan for

the site which will target removing weeds (Moth Vine and Privet) and fu-ture planting to sustain this echidna habitat.

To take part in the volunteer group, RSVP to Janet Rannard, Bushland Management Officer, Penrith City Council on 4732 8088 or email [email protected]. Once people have registered their interest a meeting date will be arranged.

For more information about Bush-care, visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au and go to the Bushland section under the “Environment”

New Craft GroupMeet new people, talk, and craft,

eat, talk, craft, eat and craft some more. The Craft Room started back in 2009 when a collective group of like minded crafters came together to work on their favourite crafts and have a chat. There are groups that meet reg-ularly around Sydney and the newest addition is Glenmore Park.

The Glenmore Park Craft Room is held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting on the 16th Febru-ary 2011. It will be held at Surveyors Creek Community Hall from 7:30pm -9:30pm

The craft is totally up to the individual - it could be sewing, knitting, crocheting, stuffing, quilting and embroidering anything that your heart desires.

You can check out The Craft Room website and blog http://the-craftroom.blogspot.com/

Sarah Saliba has just moved to Glenmore Park and is on the hunt for ladies who have an interest in Craft-ing to join the Craft Group. Sarah has her own business called Gifts Created www.giftscreated.com. Sarah began making Softies and unique toys for her little one 3 years ago. She now creates beautifully hand made crea-tions for every child’s taste (and every adults).

Products include cute appliquéd Onesies, baby mobiles, softies, soft blocks, custom made blocks and bunting, cubby houses along with Nursery deco including a new range of snails, birdcages and toadstools to brighten up your little ones room. Sarah’s inspiration comes from her little son Harrison and the things he finds in and around the garden.

Regentville School ScholarshipsAcademic Scholarships were given to 8 students from

the Penrith Region including some from Regentville Public School. A totall of $2,500, was donated by McDonalds Pen-rith licensee Ian Garton and his wife Kathryn. The scholar-ships will be used to help pay for school expenses includ-ing excursions, textbooks, uniforms and other education expenses. The scholarship program began in 2007 and Mc-Donalds Penrith continues to offer ongoing support to school fundraising initiatives and literacy programs.

Water in the Landscape Competition This year the Glenmore Park Community Project

are running a Water in the Landscape (WiTL) Multimedia Competition for people aged 12 to 17 years of age. The fo-cus is on the water bodies within Glenmore Park and the en-vironmental. Artworks could be documentaries, animations, stills, photo essays, short films, etc. Workshops and Infor-mation sessions will be run. At the end all finished artwork will be professionally mounted and presented. We are still working on the prizes and the location of the exhibition. It is a really good opportunity for the youth of Glenmore Park to convey their message that water is important and we need to protect it for future sustainability. We hope that after the competition there enough people to start up a Youth Action Group that will work towards positive action towards the en-vironment. We also will be running a event for Neighbour-hood Centre’s week. We are open to any ideas from the community, if people want to start something up, we can help.

For more information on WiTL contact Glenmore Park Community Development Worker, Glenmore Park Commu-nity Project - Domenica Stephenson 4733 1499

Caroline Chisholm College success

Vicki Stanojevic, has received first in the state in Visual Arts in the 2010 Higher School Certificate. Vicki was one of 107 students who were presented with First in Course by NSW Education Minister, Verity Firth.

Vicki said she has been interested in art from a young age but did not expect to place first in the subject. ‘When I found out I was very shocked,’ said Vicki. ‘I was not expect-ing it and it is still taking a while to sink in.’ ‘Art is my favourite subject,’ she said. ‘Even

when I was little I loved colouring-in compe-titions and drawing in my spare time.’ ‘I re-ally enjoy expressing myself through art and the freedom of choice it gives me to be creative,’ said Vicki.

In addition to receiving First in Course, Vicki’s Visual Art major works, Orchard Hills: Four Seasons, 200 years, has been selected to be exhibited at the Art Ex-press showcase at the Gal-lery of NSW early in 2011.

Vicki’s 12 pieces are a combination of finely worked watercolours, drawings and etchings layered with copies of original historical docu-ments. They depict many as-pects of her local area, such as jacaranda trees, market gardens and native birds throughout the four seasons. Vicki has also represented some of the area’s social and historic changes in her work such as the indigenous owners through to the present day urbanisation of the Penrith area.

Caroline Chisholm’s principal, Christine Howe, said Vicki was very deserving of her achievements. ‘I’m incredibly proud of Vicki and thrilled that she has achieved this hon-our and had her work selected for Art Ex-

press,’ said Christine. ‘Vicki is an outstand-ing young woman who has shown incredible

commitment and has achieved excellence in all her subjects.’This year, five Caroline Chisholm students’ artworks were selected for Art Express, following on from last year, where seven works were selected. Christine said the college’s art teachers have played a key role in the strong performance in Visual Art over a number of years.

‘I wish to congratulate our leader of arts, Karen King, who taught

Vicki in her senior years and all our visual arts teachers who have created a centre of excellence in the subject at our school,’ said Christine.Vicki also thanked her teacher for all her support with her art studies and major work. ‘I couldn’t have done it without Mrs King,’ said Vicki. ‘She was always so encouraging and a great support.’ In addition to her success in Art, Vicki was awarded joint Dux of Caroline Chisholm College.

Kara Wins Sports AwardKara Leo, a Year 12 student

at Caroline Chisholm College, was awarded the Sport-sperson of the Year award at the 2010 Parramatta Dio-cese Sports Awards evening.

The award is for a student who has displayed skill and sportsmanship across a range of sports, as well as is respected by their peers and staff and officials who are involved in school sport.

Kara is ranked the fastest S14 200m swimmer in Australia and the second fastest in the world and hopes to compete at the 2012 Lon-don Paralympics. S14 is a category for swimmers with an intellectual disability.

In August, Kara won silver at the International Paralympics World Swimming Championships in the Netherlands. At this event she took eight seconds off her personal best and is now only two seconds outside the world record for this event.

Kara has also been a keen competitor on a more local level. In the multiclass category, Kara won medals at the Parramatta Diocese Secondary School Sports Council

(PDSSSC), the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC), NSW All Schools and School Sport Aus-tralia swimming competitions.

Kara was re-cently named Youth Ambassador for the Samuel Morris Foundation, which helps children who

have survived near-drowning expe-riences. In 2009, Kara was named the NSW Young Athlete of the Year with a Disability after representing Australia to win 10 medals, including 5 gold at the Global Games in the Czech Republic.

Teaching educator, secondary sport in the Parramatta diocese, Chris Anschau, said Kara was very deserving of the award. ‘Kara is a very talented sportswoman who has far exceeded the prerequisites for this award,’ said Chris. ‘She is a very inspiring young woman.’

Nepean Wolves celebrate

Nepean Wolves Taekwondo is en-tering its tenth year of teaching Ko-rean martial arts to the children and aduls of Glenmore Park in 2011. The school has recently expanded its mar-tial arts curriculum to include Haidong Gumdo: an elegant and exciting mar-tial art that draws on ancient sword combat techniques.

Dave Adlam, senior instructor for Nepean Wolves, has been practis-ing and teaching taekwondo for many years and firmly believes that the dis-cipline and fitness required for mar-tial arts have significant benefits for both children and adults alike. Learn-ing a martial art also means learning respect – for yourself, for your fel-low students, and for your instructors. These qualities of fitness, discipline and respect are essential to gain the most from our lives.

In 2010 Luke Adlam joined the team of instructors at Nepean Wolves, taking on the role of Haidong Gum-do instructor. Haidong Gumdo is a relatively new sport in Australia and Luke became a national champion at the 2010 Australian Champion-ships. His strength and proficiency impressed the judges immensely and he is now training for the next World Championships.

Both Taekwondo and Haidong Gumdo provide a modern twist to cen-turies old combat traditions.

Taekwondo is literally translated as “art of hand and foot”. Students learn

how to use their bodies to protect themselves by practising poomse or patterns, and techniques that gradu-ally increase in difficulty as they rise through the belt levels. Instructors use a variety of games and specific drills to coach students through the increas-ingly complex techniques required for each belt.

By contrast, Haidong Gumdo fo-

cuses on sword work, with beginners using a mogum or wooden sword. As students progress through the lev-els they can move to a steel prac-tise sword or kargum for their pat-

terns or gumbo. Students refine their sword tech-nique by learn-ing paper cutting, which is a great deal more difficult than it sounds, and, for senior students, bam-boo cutting and rush mat cutting. This martial art requires strength and grace to per-form the complex but beautiful pat-terns that include jumps, twirls, rolls and even the oc-

casional cartwheel. Like Taekwondo, Haidong Gumdo also offers sparring however, sparring for Haidong Gumdo is choreographed and includes theatrical, acrobatic and technical elements.

To learn more about these Korean martial arts, call Dave Adlam on 0408 609 464 or go to the Nepean Wolves website at www.nwtkd.com.au.
