JUNIOR CONVENORS REPORT 2017 It is my privilege to again present the 2017 Annual Junior Report of the Glebe District Hockey Club. Each of our junior committee meetings starts with my thanks to the team who work tirelessly to keep our junior players on the field each weekend. I want to acknowledge that particularly extends to our communications, and so thank the entire team, led by our SEHA Coordinator Sue Heath and Metro Coordinator Allison Cummins for their input throughout the year and in this report This has been a season of renewal, building on the hard work of club members in previous years, and starting with a Sunday afternoon round table at Jubilee to engage with determining a vision for Glebe District Hockey Club. I encourage you to look at the documents on the website, to be part of the process and to recognise the efforts being made to strengthen and grow. The theme of the year has been focusing on the club values of Family, Equality, Commitment and Contribution. It’s a renewed focus on a One Club approach, aimed at increasing the strength of the bonds between Juniors, Women’s and Men’s in a shared goal of developing Glebe District Hockey Club into a strong and sustainable sporting group, and giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate in our sport. It was a year of considerable positives, with a strong sense of commitment and contribution. However it was a frustrating start, complicated by seemingly endless wet weather, unstable registration numbers and difficult decisions about competition entry and teams. There were new game formats to negotiate, new Joey balls to adjust to and new registration forms and processes. Glebe had 11 junior teams playing in 2017 in both the SEHA (U9s to U15s) and Sydney Metro (U15A & U17A) competitions. Thank you to players and families who coped with the challenges of balancing numbers and disparities in team strengths in the SEHA competition. Your patience, resilience and commitment were greatly appreciated. Your feedback was helpful, be assured its been heard, and we are confident of benefiting from the experiences in future seasons. And for our youngest members and their families, the very popular Minkey/Hookin2Hockey program continued on Saturday mornings at Jubilee Oval throughout the 2017 season – a big thank you to the evergreen Vernon Howe, Harry Wark Jnr, Sue Heath and their young assistants for the incredible effort they put in to teaching our youngest players (children ranging from 3 to 9 years) the key skills of hockey!! The tradition of securing a Minkey ribbon and a sweet treat remains strong. There is something to read about each of our teams throughout the Annual Report, significant milestones and achievements from individual players and stories from the season. There have been countless examples of Glebe juniors who are excelling, whether on the field or off. They are demonstrating our values of commitment and contribution each week. We have seen improvement in all of our teams this year. While not all teams will be featuring in finals, each have found some area of improvement on the field, reached a small milestone or shared some tough days with friends. At the time of writing, our U11A teams have both made the finals, along with our U13A Redbacks and U15B Hornets. I want to most warmly congratulate the Hornets for qualifying for finals this year. They have exemplified commitment and resilience after some challenging seasons, and we are extremely pleased

to have their efforts recognised. And to our U13A Redbacks, who will be flying the Glebe flag in the 2017 SEHA Grand Final, we are very proud of you all, along with your outstanding coach, manager and supporters. Our social media presence has increased this season, and I did notice on our Facebook page a recent article by Australian Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles in the context of his 300th game for Australia. It is relevant to two things. Firstly, a turf. It is a time of great optimism that a turf for Glebe is genuinely in sight. Thank you for your support in moving this forward. It is what we need to ensure our juniors can compete on an equal level with their peers. But the experience of playing on grass, and the historical significance of Jubilee to Glebe cannot be underestimated. It remains incredibly valuable. Knowles said when he coaches’ children and they complain about playing on grass ovals instead of comfortable synthetic fields, he thinks back to where he started. “I refer to my playing days on an old cow paddock,’’ he laughed. “I say to them: Jamie Dwyer, probably the greatest of all time, grew up playing on grass in Rockhampton – it puts it into perspective for the kids who get it a little easier these days.’’ Glebe Juniors don’t have it easy, they work hard and that’s something to be proud of. But secondly, what I equally noticed was that of Knowles making these remarks in the context of coaching juniors. His ongoing contribution and commitment to hockey. We noted in the Red Rag earlier that many of our juniors are privileged to have time with coaches and mentors who have represented Australia, NSW and Glebe at the highest level, both playing, umpiring and coaching. We are grateful that they also share a sense of family, equality, commitment and contribution. A feature of our coaching this season was the addition to our impressive roster of experienced coaching talent of a number of juniors giving back to the club, as well as parents new to our club, and seniors giving their time to assist. I thank our senior players, particularly Alister Cullen, BJ Bruton, Dom Tintner, Aaron Nilan and Kate Alexander for their time and efforts with juniors, as well as Les Wark and Terry Kelly for helping out with skills sessions throughout the season, and Larry McIntosh and Paul Riley for leading our Junior Development Academy. I thank all of our coaches and managers, for their dedication and efforts throughout the year, as well as acknowledge the support of Andy van Pelt from Hockey NSW and Dean Morrow for their assistance in running courses and assessments for our coaches. I am pleased to be able to say we accredited a further four of our coaches this season, and look forward to offering further opportunities for our coaching team to have their skills recognised. Umpire development continues to be in focus at Glebe-‐its critical that we grow in this area. My particular thanks to Lindesay Brine for taking the lead, for his support and encouragement of junior umpires, and umpiring of countless games on our behalf, often at the sacrifice of supporting his own children. I also want to acknowledge Carole Wark for sharing her invaluable advice and expertise in this area. Thank you to each of the senior club members who gave up a Friday night to umpire junior games (often at short notice and at distant venues), and to Ian Paterson and Laura Schmahmann who provided an efficient and at times entertaining liaison between seniors and juniors. And to our growing group of junior umpires, congratulations-‐your work is valuable and we are proud to support and encourage your learning and development. Well done. The Juniors Committee is a diverse group, and each member brings a different priority and

perspective to the sport. Each is more than happy to hear your views. We do not always have to agree, in fact it is often from difference that we can build strength and grow. If you have ideas or energy or suggestions or would like to join in for 2018 please let us know. There are many ways to make a contribution to our children and the sport, big or small, from club to association level. It’s worth it To David Pritchard, most ably and graciously supported by Laura Torrible, our enormous thanks for capturing so many memories of the season on camera. I thank our Clubhouse team of Andrew (Googa) Goodrick for his generosity of time in managing Jubilee and the clubhouse, with the support of Sue Heath, Kerry Hunt on equipment and the many parents who stepped up to the BBQ and behind the counter to help out. And we thank our sponsors for their generous commitments, which allow us to keep hockey accessible to all juniors. And I want to very genuinely thank the GDHC Management Committee for all of their enthusiasm, time, hard work, and support during the season. If you are new to Glebe this season, I hope you have felt welcome, and enjoyed the experience. Thank you to those who have been part of the family for a while, for your good humour, commitment and contributions. As always, many of the sustaining moments that kept us going throughout the year have not been on the field, but on training fields, in dugouts and on sidelines. There have been some gorgeous photos, some here in the annual report, on social media and no doubt on your phones capturing red faces, bright smiles and beautiful friendships. It is in that sense of family; of sharing ideas, holiday reviews (yep, some of us went to Italy), food and laughter that Glebe Hockey has its greatest strength. Clare Prideaux Junior Convenor 2017

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT 2017
In the second year of our efforts to develop Glebe Junior Umpires we remain very fortunate to have a willing group of volunteer junior umpires. This year, our team of junior umpires grew to 12 (up from 11 last year, with 7 of the 2016 umpires returning for another season). The benefits of the work put in last year can be seen in over 70% of all SEHA Junior Competition games being umpired by one of our Junior umpires and we also doubled the number of accredited umpires from 2 to 4. We continue to focus on developing our umpires from the ranks of our junior players and it is great to see our junior umpires cover such a large proportion of our games during the season. We ended the season with some great progress towards umpiring development with many more ideas on keeping the momentum going. In the coming year, we will not only be focusing on accrediting more umpires, but also expanding the club’s knowledge of the rules with rules nights for players and parents. A guide to umpiring at Glebe is being prepared so that everyone in the club is aware of how we want to develop our Junior Umpires. The guide is near completion and will be released shortly. This year our enthusiastic umpires were mostly drawn from U13, U15 & U17 teams, with some fine support from senior players and parents. A table recording Junior Umpires is included at the end of this report.

I would like to particularly thank our junior umpires who supported SEHA representative teams during the year. Sarah Brine and Tim Pritchard supported the U13 Girls and Boys teams in Canberra this year and did Glebe proud! One of the benefits of umpiring at carnivals and State Championships is the opportunity for considerable practice and even opportunities to attain accreditation. I recommend all Junior Umpires put their hand up for umpiring at a Carnival: it helps! We also congratulate Tim Pritchard and Cameron Jones on being accredited as Community Umpires. This starts them on the road to umpiring Senior games, and to this end Sarah Brine umpired 2 SEHA Women’s games this season; Well done and let’s see more of it! I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Carole Wark for her assistance during the year. Carole has assisted a number of the Junior Umpires during the season, with individual coaching when I couldn’t get around to all the games. We will be looking to do more of this next season, as long as Carole has the patience! Our aim remains to have all SEHA Junior Competition games umpired by an accredited junior umpire, and while we are getting closer at 70%, we will need more willing volunteers and some practice and coaching. I believe we can get there. The more umpires we have accredited, the more support there will be for aspiring juniors. We look forward to seeing more names on the umpires list, and more umpires on the Accredited list. It would be great to see all SEHA Junior Competition, Metro Competition, Men’s and Women’s club umpiring duties completed by a Glebe Junior trained Umpire. My thanks to all of the juniors who took on the umpiring this year, and for their parents for driving them all over Sydney to get them to games. We all want to thank Glebe Juniors, the Seniors who umpired games for us all season, and of course, Carole Wark who generously shares her experience and knowledge with the Junior Umpires. TEAM REPORTS 2017
U9 STRIKERS
(Left to right ) Back Katherine Lord (coach), Sebastian Derrick, Molly Lord, Lillie Seebacher, Millie Cook, Ben Cook (coach) Front Miki Cooper, Alfie Lord, Ella Tamir, Blake Bestel The U9 format has been a great introduction to the game for those who have never played before and a great stepping-‐stone from MINKEY before getting into more competitive U11, which would have been too full on this year for many of the players. The U9’s had a successful season overall, and were an absolute pleasure to coach. Seeing their skills build over the season, and watch them gain an understanding of the game, was an extremely rewarding experience. The team had a fantastic dynamic, with the right mix of competitiveness combined with their devotion to being social. The kids all made great friends, played well together and most importantly had a lot of fun. Between cartwheeling

and gymnastics on the pitch, and the challenges of keeping the attention of a group of chatty juniors, the training sessions proved to be more beneficial than we realised! On weekends, we saw incredible displays during the games including solid communication, passing and goal scoring more and more as the season went on. Playing UNSW each week, these guys were an extremely strong side, with many players with skills beyond their years. After a rather deflating start to the season, with many a goal scored against us, it was incredible to watch the team turn things around towards the middle and end of the season. Rather than significant losses, we started to see draws and even wins on several occasions (not that anyone was keeping score). The U9 Strikers now had skills to match, and this of course boosted the confidence of our players who were no longer afraid to strut their stuff, show off their new skills, and tackle their opposition to win that ball! It was great to play on fantastic astro pitches most weeks and great camaraderie with the Dutch UNSW crew who taught us heaps about kids’ hockey! Both teams supporting each other, sharing half time oranges, and being given packs of lollies after each game. The commitment and attitude of all the Glebe players and their parents must also be mentioned. The dedication of the parents to bring their kids to training and games each week and cheer continuously on the sidelines whether it be win, lose or draw, really helped the kids have fun and enjoy the sport even during those tough games. Parents were always on hand to help out and be involved if needed. Awesome team and the intro of "2 eyes, 1 nose and a mouth" pure genius. "I wanna be an eye!!!!" Miki Cooper She may be quiet as a mouse, but never one to be underestimated on the hockey field. Miki played tirelessly every game, putting in her all. Switching easily between defence and attack, Miki is always a supportive team member and relentless tackler, never giving up. Holly Abbott Reliable in defence every game; she isn’t one to let many past her. Holly developed excellent vision and passing skills through the season. She is always smiling and happy and is so coachable as she is such a great listener and committed to learning the game. Her positive attitude was infectious. Molly Lord Molly gained confidence as the season went on. Molly always gave her best and made some great tackles. Playing best up in the forwards she was seen to make a number of breaks, and learned the art of passing the ball amongst her teammates well, making her a great team player. Alfie Lord The youngest on the team, Alfie always put in a good effort. He worked hard all season and without a doubt is developing his strength. Alfie makes a big contribution as a forward to the team as he is always there at the goal waiting to tap it in. Alfie shows ability beyond his years. Blake Bestel Blake is seen to be a committed player through his reliable attendance at games and training each week. Blake improved his game throughout the season. With an even temperament you were never sure when Blake might strike – he showed some fantastic goal keeping skills towards the end. Sebastian Derrick Seb showed tremendous enthusiasm for the game and we feel like he is a born hockey player. He will be a great Glebe player for years to come. Seb has an excellent ability to read

the game and can run non-‐stop. His speed combined with his commitment and improving skills will translate into a Glebe hockey legend. Jessica Weatherall Jess was our most unselfish team player. Jess’ skills developed from passing to trapping to scoring many a goal. Jess was aggressive in attack and then was somehow always there to defend. Jess was the centrepiece of our attack and communicated well with her teammates to score those goals. Lilli Seebacher Lilli is always solid in her performance. Her determination and positive attitude will see her hockey career doing very well. Her game improved immensely as the season went on, proving to be a confident goal-‐scoring superstar by the end. She is a humble player, a pleasure to coach and has lots to offer both her team and coaches. Ella Tamir Ella developed some impressive skills over the season and was always strong on attack and a reliable link in setting up some goals, with her excellent passing game. Her tackles were always spot on, never willing to let anyone pass her. Ella is a great team player. Millie Cook Millie puts a new meaning to the term ‘work horse’. Millie is a very talented player and was seen to develop her game in all aspects this year. Her tenacity and ’never give up’ nature makes her a force to be reckoned with. Luca Katrakis-‐Owen Luca always gives his best. He is strong in both defence and attack, and stopped many a goal. Don’t be fooled by his quiet nature, as he never gives up, is a great supporter of his team, and played an awesome passing game. Coaches Katherine Lord & Ben Cook

U11 STRIKERS
Back Emma Alexander Prideaux (coach), Eddie Crowe Palmer, Olivia Cain (coach) Lilah Randall, Lachlan Watson Reganne Patterson Middle Bethan McCracken, Bodhi Aroney, Eric Rutledge, Anna Kepert Front Mila Faine, Tom Kepert It was a season of firsts for the U11B Strikers. It was the first season of the new format Kookaburra hockey, with the new Joey balls. For most of our team it was their first season of competition hockey. By playing 8 a side, half field games there were lots more chances to get involved in the game. We saw lots of first goals. We had our first win. And it was our first season as coaches. We have enjoyed the season and learned a lot from coaching, and we hope that you have all enjoyed the season and learned a lot as well. Getting to know each of you, thinking of ways we could teach you the important bits about playing hockey and seeing how each of you has improved and grown in confidence during the season has been a really great experience. Some of our season highlights have been watching Tom, Bodhi, Eric, Mila and Lilah score their first goals in junior hockey, hearing your funny stories after the games and having you join us at training and playing in a game together. Player Profiles Bodhi Aroney Bodhi is one of those players you can put anywhere and know he will give his best. His sense of teamwork and friendships with his teammates was a pleasure to see, and his work rate in games was consistent and helped us get in great field position throughout the season.

Eddie Crowe Palmer Eddie showed extra interest and commitment to Glebe hockey this season, and we loved him coming to training and out to a senior game with us. Eddie has a natural tendency to the defence, and made lots of great tackles and cleared the ball wide all season. Mila Faine Mila is really our most versatile player. For a long time we thought she was a natural striker-‐always in the right position and ready to score goals. But then she had her turn in goals, and we found out she was a sensation there as well! Mila, your lovely smile and enthusiasm mean you are a great asset to any team wherever you play. Anna Kepert Anna has been one of our keenest players this season, and really wants to learn and improve her game. Anna played all over the field and has a great trap and solid passing game. We promise, that goal will come. Tom Kepert Tom is a great player because he runs and runs all game. We have really enjoyed watching Tom develop in to a great team player, while still showing us his individual skills. Tom scored 28 goals this season. We see a very bright future for Tom in hockey. Bethan McCracken Bethan was one of our senior players this year, and put all of her experience from last season to good use throughout the year. She had lots of good ideas for strategy at training and games. Reganne Patterson Reganne grew so much in confidence this season, and was very reliable in defence. Reganne did all we asked of her, and must have saved a thousand goals over the season. Lilah Randall Often the first to training and the last to leave, Lilah was a great asset to the Strikers this season. Lilah is another player with a great smile and great work ethic and happy to play wherever she is asked. Scored a great goal at Jubilee under lights. Eric Rutledge Eric is a great student of hockey, and always wanted to know about the score, and ladder and if we could still make the finals. Eric showed great commitment to the team, and his efforts each week showed great improvement all season. His goals at the Glebe Carnival were a well-‐deserved reward. Lachlan Watson Lachlan is a steady player and a natural defender with a strong hit. He improved throughout the season, and was a good asset to the team We would like to thank Allison who was amazing as our team manager , helped with coaching and training and kept the lollipop box well stocked. We love your work. Our post game breakfasts have been lots of fun. We would also like to thank Clare Prideaux and Sue Heath from the Juniors Committee for giving us the chance to coach, Dean Morrow for passing us in our coaching test, and Lindesay Brine for getting us an umpire almost every week. And to all those umpires, some of who are our teammates, thank you for all your time and keeping things running smoothly. And to our own coach Aaron who helped us out with coaching the team at Sutherland when we were away in Wagga and umpiring on that freezing morning at Moorebank, and let us have guests at training and games, let us copy some drills and gave us a few coaching tips along the way, an extra thank you.

We would most importantly like to thank everyone in the Strikers Family for your support, good humour and commitment this season. This is a fantastic group of children and families, and it has been lovely to be part of this team and your local community with you all. Welcome to the #glebefamily, and we hope that you will all be playing good hockey for many years to come. Remember, keep running, be first to the ball, keep it wide and stay in hockey position. And you always need your stick with you on the field. Emma Alexander Prideaux and Olivia Cain U11B Strikers Coaches 2017

U11 HORNETS Coaches: Sonya Finlayson and Peter Bestel Manager: Toni Sheehy Players: Elise Bestel, Ella Day, Cody Finlayson, Piper Finlayson, Joshua Livery, Aidan Livery, Holly Murrell, Abbey Wilson-‐Greenwood, Gracie Spiller.
The U11 Hornets have had a tough year in 2017, with many first time players being put up against teams with significantly more experience and skills. The team also had two new coaches -‐ one with no previous hockey experience! However, despite these challenges and the late start to training for this year, all of the young men and women in the team have had a remarkable year. The coaches and parents have watched them work together all year and seen them enjoying being out on the field, greatly improve their games and support each other in victory and defeat. Every one of the team have developed their games and taken great pride in being able to string together a number of wonderful goals, take a few wins out of the season, and shut out a large number of the scoring chances for their opposition in many games. Whilst all of us are keen to win and works hard at the game, the real strength has been the character and persistence shown when games and plans do not work out, and their good sportsmanship when dealing with the opposition. We’re very proud of the effort put in and hope that the work we’ve all done to improve on some weaknesses and concentrate on technique and strategy will turn out to be strengths for the next season. We’re also very appreciative for the help provided by Les every few weeks in the skills training evenings down in Camperdown. Well done Hornets for your persistence, comradeship and positive attitude for the season just past and we hope to see you next year. Sonya Finlayson and Peter Bestel (Coaches)

U11 REDS
Left to right: Ciara Jarvis, Sophie Busch, Airley Goodridge, Chiara Nonnis Salazar, Clementine Gerber, Noah Gordon, Ryan Maniaty, Hugo Moore, Cindy Goodridge, Frankie Foster (front) With the commencement of the new U11 format this year of half field with 8 a side games, many of the Glebe Under 11s had to learn to play the new format after playing full field previously. The smaller team numbers gave the opportunity for Glebe to have 2 x U11A teams the Reds and the Backs. With this the mighty Reds started the season with 9 players and no one who played goalie, Frankie, Airley, Noah, Ryan, Clementine, Ciara, Hugo, Chiara and Zac. With Zac moving up to the U13b team we gained Sophie our pocket rocket to the team. I am very proud of the U11 Reds team this year as they pulled together and really started to work the new system playing some fantastic hockey. All the players had a go in goals, for some of them the goalie gear was bigger than they were but they still went on with a smile and enthusiasm along with the support of their teammates. As the season progressed the team started to link together and put into practice some amazing passing, this was very exciting to see such beautiful hockey played by such a young team. The individual skills and game awareness of each player improved as we moved through the season. Many players finding what position really suited them and some playing with great strength right across the field. It was great to have both the U11As teams training together throughout the season and building the talents of all our junior players along with the Glebe camaraderie. A big thanks to Lester Currie, coach of the U11 Backs for his support and help through training this year.

Many of the Reds team members also played representative hockey this year through SEHA. For the boys we had Hugo and Zac in the U11 boys and for the girls we had Frankie, Airley and Clementine in the U11 girls’ teams. I would like to congratulate these players on a fantastic effort in make these teams. I would like to also thank those who were behind the U11 Reds success this year, Elizabeth Grady our fabulous manager, Dan Gordon and Brad Goodridge the super sub coaches, all the Red players’ parents for their positive support during the season, our wonderful junior umpires and the 9 players from the U11 Backs and U11bs that subbed for us throughout the season. You all made our season fun and fantastic. All the players in the U11 Reds team have contributed to a fun and successful season. Below are some individual comments on each of them. Frankie Foster -‐ Frankie is always looking out for her teammates and stood up as the senior player this year. Frankie has been one of the team’s real versatile players playing across defence, midfield and as a striker with great strength. Frankie has ones of the team’s best hits, which she used to set up the teams attack and move the ball quickly out of defence. Frankie also represented in the SEHA U11 girls’ team this year. Clementine Gerber -‐ Clementine has shown fantastic improvement throughout the season with a positive and enthusiastic attitude to her hockey as well as showing great sportsmanship on the field. She has become a strong defensive midfielder with great tackling ability. Clementine played her first year of representative hockey with the SEHA U11 Girls team this year accelerating her hockey skills. It has been a pleasure watching her grow as a hockey player and will be a strong Glebe hockey player of the future. Airley Goodridge -‐ A strong midfielder pulling off great tackles throughout the season as well as having a developed passing game setting up her team for attack. Airley always encourages her teammates and making sure they are ok demonstrating great sportsman ship on the field. Airley always wants to improve her hockey and has a strong competitive spirit. Airley also represented in the SEHA U11 girl’s team this year improving her individual skills. Noah Gordon – A quiet achiever, always willing to learn and work hard at training. This showed throughout the season as he improved to becoming one of the team’s strong strikers showing his skill on the field and linking well with his teammates across the attack. Noah’s strength and speed on the ball grew throughout the season as he set up his team players for several of the goals in the season. Ciara Jarvis – starting the season as a striker and then moving into defence Ciara has come into her own and improved with her strong marking and reading of the game across the defending line. Making many strong tackles and passing with confidence stopping the opposition’s high attack. It has been wonderful seeing Ciara really find her place on the field this season. Ryan Maniaty – one of our most versatile players and fastest, Ryan demonstrated his skill in attack scoring several goals this year as well as his strong tackling ability saving many goals in defence. Ryan has been a valuable player across several positions with his speed, skill and high work rate on the field. Ryan has a strong sense of the game and a real competitive edge on the field. Hugo Moore: -‐ Hugo has had a really solid year as one of the teams strikers and a key linking player always in on the ball around the circle snagging some great goals in the season. Hugo constantly wants to improve his game with a strong competitive spirit. Hugo also represented in the SEHA U11 boys team this year.

Chiara Nonnis-‐Salazar – Chiara has a great eye for the ball and fantastic reach surprising players with her strong defending tackles. Chiara has had a fantastic season improving with every game and dominating the defence for the U11 Reds. At times Chiara was the last line of defence but stayed focused and pulled of some outstanding tackles. I look forward to seeing Chiara continue to improve her hockey. Sophie Busch -‐ Our youngest player and wow what an amazing pocket rocket of a player she is, with her constant tackling and determination on the ball. Sophie surprised many of her opponents as she won the ball with strength. Sophie has always taken the field with a smile and was a delight at training with her willingness to give everything a go. Sophie is going to be a great Glebe player for the future. Cindy Goodridge (Coach) Editors Note The Reds qualified for the U11A SEHA Finals this season, but unfortunately were defeated in a close contest against Sutherland on their home turf. Congratulations on a great season, pictured below they still look happy!

U11 BACKS
(Left to Right) Back -‐ Rachael Beckett (Manager), Coralie Currie, Lester Currie (Coach) Middle Rahni Salier, Daisy Noble, Henri Somerton, Janine Southwell, Mishka Cavadini-‐Bell, Emerson Bonhote, George Currie, Jami England Front -‐ James Brine It is exciting to be in the semi-‐finals and all the newly named ‘Backs’ players can be proud of their efforts throughout the season. The players were great to coach and worked at improving teamwork and are now playing their best hockey and have been competitive all year, which is excellent. The first week of the semis is a 1 v 4 against the top ranking St George team. We played a great game against St George two weeks prior so hopefully we get an upset win. We combined with Cindy and the Reds, which was a good approach for our training at Cintra on Tuesday nights. The ideal outcome will be that we meet our training mates in an all Glebe Grand Final. This season saw the introduction of a new 8 a side format played on a half field with a Joey Ball into the U11 competition. The new format seemed to work well in terms of player participation and involvement across the field. Overall we kept communication messages straight forward and fun -‐ one week we all wrote our key messages to remember on our hands …things like ‘tap ‘n’ go’, ‘spread wide’, ‘stop

Special thanks to Rachael Beckett who managed the team, kept the communications going with good humour and always an upbeat outlook. Rachael also had the goalie kit in her car boot all year with James in goals, which was outstanding for her household shopping this season. Thank you to the parents and extended families and friends who were again very encouraging of the team as well as providing oranges, snakes and positive support from the sideline. Thanks to all the Junior Umpires who did an excellent job in officiating our games and to Lindesay Brine for managing the umpire program. On behalf of our players and parents thanks to Clare and the Junior Committee for all your work coordinating Junior Hockey at our Club.
It was a fun season.

Emerson Bonhote Emerson had a great season with a mix games in the midfield and as a Striker. It is fantastic to think Emerson only joined last season and the contribution she has made to the team. I see passages of real steely determination and potential and look forward to seeing Emerson with the U13s next year. Well done Emerson on a great year. James Brine James moved positions from a Striker last season to down the back as our dedicated Goalie for 2017. This was a move that had quite some history as James had been keen (read begging) to get into the goals for a couple of years. James has been motivated at developing his keeping skills and has had some outstanding games -‐ a stand out being against Sutherland in the last round of the normal season. Well done in Goals this season. Coralie Currie Coralie excelled as a defender and pleasingly had some great games in the midfield. Coralie has nice timing and provided plenty of powerful clearing hits on the half field this year that demonstrated it’s time for U13s and a return to the full field. It was also great to see Coralie use her reach to tackle players. Growing pains were managed over the last few rounds but all up a great effort this year. Well done Coralie in U11s over many seasons. George Currie George had a strong midfield game and nice linking plays up the field. George is also a long-‐standing U11 player and is starting to develop his attacking hockey. George ended up as our top goal scorer at the conclusion of the home and away rounds. Well done George on a great year of hockey. Mishka Cavadini-‐Bell Mishka had an outstanding second season of hockey again launching into tackles with stick and body and digging out the ball in majority of contests. Mishka does plenty of running and was a fantastic contribution to our midfield for the season. Well done Mishka on your efforts and an excellent year of hockey. Jami England Jami is our expert Defender and occasional midfielder and had another solid year. As usual Jami was rock solid and as reliable as ever for the team. Jami’s hockey skills and reading of

the play has been excellent and I look forward to seeing Jami out in the older age divisions. Thanks for all your efforts Jami in U11s and congratulations on another good year of hockey. Daisy Noble Daisy was again our universal player before settling into Defender role towards the end of the season. Daisy is a reliable and determined player who consistently helped the team shut down attacking runs and consolidated her role as one of our senior players. Daisy is always happy to help out with whatever the team required. Well done on a great season Daisy. Rahni Salier Rahni is great to watch playing and was our most improved player for the season. Rahni was a real stand out in terms of effort at training and games resulting in significant improvement to her hockey and reading of the game over the season. Rahni, Congratulations on a fantastic season. Henri Somerton Henri had a solid first year with the team and improved his hockey skills over the season. After trialing a few positions, Henri settled into our forward line and finished the season strongly. Continued efforts at training will really set a platform for further improvements next year that will be great to see. Great work Henri and keep it going. Janine Southwell Janine had a solid year and again was one of our key Strikers up front. Janine is always keen and happy to get involved and loves her hockey. Janine worked with Henri and Emerson up front and was always threatening and finished plenty of attacking goals for the team. Well done Janine on a great season. Lester Currie Coach Editors Note The Backs qualified for the U11A SEHA Finals this season, but unfortunately were defeated by the minor premiers St George. Congratulations on a great season.

atmosphere really made us remember that win lose or draw, we play because we enjoy the game. The coaches (all three of us) would also like to thank the team. A great bunch of kids who had their ups and downs during the season, but who all ended the season as better teammates and hockey players. Thanks, and well done. 2017 was always going to be a learning experience for the U13B Strikers. Not only did they improve their hockey every game but also they showed great team spirit and commitment to their teammates with everyone turning up, working on their hockey, and trying to play as a team. Every week we got more competitive and in the last game of the season and with all three coaches assembled and supported by our ever-‐present super manager Julian, the team managed to put up our best fight of the season. Highlight of the season (just one of many) Yelling “send it wide!!!” every week and finally seeing it happen (still waiting on “get some stretch!!’) BJ, Al and Dom The team was as follows; Alessio Cavadini-‐Bell Whether it was willingly putting on the pads or making great leads as a Forward Alessio always did his best and gave every game his all. His never say die attitude really came through when as a forward, he chased down a through ball that most other players would have given up on, keeping it in play to set up one of our best goals late in the season. Harriet Choi Was a great utility player this season -‐ doing whatever job was asked of her and doing it well. She was very solid in defence, preventing many an attacking chance on goal and moving the ball well in attack. Felix De Beaujeu Was the quiet achiever when he got on the pitch. Felix was always there to support his teammates and put pressure on the opposition ball carriers, running till the final whistle blows. Towards the end of the season Felix understood the importance of marking up, often setting a great example for the others in finding a player early at an opposition free hit. Gabriel Derrick One of our brilliant backs. Gabs loved his hockey and was always there when needed in defence to help turn back the attack and working the ball up through halfback. Gabs skills developed well but he may not stay in the backs next year – showing great ability to play through the halves. Jessica Kennedy Ms. dependable in defence, Jess’s reading of the play and ability to dispose of potential raids by opposition team forwards is exciting to watch. Jess’s skills have increased even more this year filling multiple roles in the team, as needed, a player to watch for the future that can slot in just as well in the halves. Callum McCracken Another one of our defensive unit. As the season went on, Callum’s big clearances and defensive hit became very effective and fundamental to our team. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop as a player.

Hugh MacPherson -‐ is natural athlete with a good eye for the ball and a great sense for positional play. We put his skills to good use moving the ball into the opposition half. Another player that was great to coach with a talent for the game we hope to see him in Glebe colours for a long time to come. Cate Sandbach – was a terrific winger this season, her reading of the play and ability to foil potential raids by opposition halves is exciting to watch, as was her ability to run the ball tenaciously down the line to set up our strikers. Peter Sandbach Was our determined Goalie for most this year and did extremely well with the high workload. Peter also made an excellent winger when not donning the pads, having great positional awareness and quickly responding to the coaching staffs feedback. Made some miracle saves as goal keeper Zach Somerton Has developed very well over the year, particularly in his positional play, defensive tacking and overall tenacity as a player. As the season progressed, so too did his confidence and skills on the field. Zack has represented Glebe well this year and was fearless in defence using his natural pace to run out to spoil shots at short corners, a job that requires quite some bravery. Katya Silink The settling force of the side, Katya was often used as a centre half where her calm composure could be used to provide support to the forwards in attack and as an outlet from defence. She has great potential to succeed in hockey and we all look forward to seeing more of her in the years to come. Agam Tamir Another member of our team who keeps everyone smiling. His positive demeanour and attitude are contagious; as is the level of effort and commitment he brings onto the field every game. Agam spent most of his time begging the coaches to put him at centre forward and telling us how to improve our game plan. He always worked back hard in defence and was always willing to learn and improve. Erinn Dwyer Started the season as a very competent young hockey player. As our fastest player Erin started many counter attacks, taking control of pitch and creating great scoring opportunities. Erinn worked extremely hard for the team and I think she also covered the most distance out of any player each game. Imogen Sabey Gave the team great value at inner and on the wing. She was dangerous in attack sliding some great passes forward and always running hard back to assist the backs. The type of hard working player that every team needs. Foster Patterson Another one of our defenders, the improvement in Foster’s skills during this season was great to see. Foster was always ready to listen and his defending complemented that of those around him. Foster was always ready to push up to support the halves and work back hard to pick up high strikers. Zack Arambewela A truly talented little player whose diminutive stature hid lighting speed and a brilliant touch. The whole team appreciated having him play up and lending his talents to the team. Zack is a player to watch for Glebe in the future.

U13 REDBACKS
(Left to right) Back Cam Jones (umpire) Orlando Travis, Zane Goodridge, Sam Waddington, Will Brine, Annie Millar, Tom Alexander Prideaux, Hugh Foster, Audrey McGibbon (Manager), Kate Alexander (Coach) Front Clark Foster, Cate Heath, Allegra Symonds, Billy Pritchard, Edward Noble It is with great pride that I submit this year’s report on the mighty U13 Redbacks. I do not think there is a coach in this state, or perhaps even this country, who could be more proud. Firstly, they are a lovely bunch of young people -‐ every single one of them. Secondly, they are incredibly rewarding to work with – each week their improvements, as individuals and as a team, are notable. Each week their enthusiasm is infectious. As I write this report we have qualified for the grand final – from fourth position we have knocked off the top of the ladder. I have high hopes for further success, but I am sure the coach of Sutherland feels similarly confident. What I can absolutely count on is that this team will give it their very best shot, pun intended, and that they will do it together and for each other. Their sum is so very much greater than their parts. Teamwork defines the Redbacks and it is magnificent teamwork. A regular feature of our games is the post match team de-‐brief “gratitude snakes” where each player awards another with an observation about something they contributed to the match. Audrey, my trusty manager, and I have never failed to be impressed with the astute, generous and thoughtful contributions from each player. Not once have their comments felt contrived or insincere – their respect is genuine and inspiring and gives so much hope for the men and women that these players will be for our club in the future.

Tom Alexander Prideaux: a versatile and reliable player Tom has improved consistently this season, becoming stronger, faster, more determined and skilled with each game. Tom never gives up, and chase, chase, chases the whole time. He holds his own in defence and has proved to be very handy in attack – popping the only goal in the net in the clincher against top ranked Sutherland. With his dry sense of humour, modesty and easy-‐going nature, he takes each game and its happenings in his stride, no matter what. Win, draw or thumping defeat, Tom can be counted on to support his teammates on and off the field. Will Brine: Will has a lot of skill and in particular, is noted for distributing the ball well. He is as comfortable and adept in defence as he a determined and competitive striker, with some outstanding goals this season. He is the loudest on the field (in a good way!), and shows outstanding leadership in issuing timely and helpful instructions to his teammates. We also love the way he celebrates, with his big cheers and shrieks of delight. A player with great skills, a kind nature and a big heart. Molly Busch: Molly has a love of hockey and devotion to her team that is endearing. She has improved greatly this season, showing her determination in tackling and passing. Molly works hard at training, always listens and always gives her best. On the night of a recent training session all the other students in Molly’s year six class were at a party. Not our Molly – she was adamant that she could not miss training. She is also a strong member of the team, respected by her peers, always proudly decked in maroon, down to the hair clips and ribbons and can always be counted on to play with heart. Liam Fiene: Dear Liam is the player every coach wants in his or her team. The boy is never without a smile, his enthusiasm and warmth are delightful and he will have a go willingly wherever you put him on the field. With a growing repertoire of skills and knowledge, it’s been lovely to see Liam’s confidence grow this season, and with it his cheeky contributions. I am more than confident that Liam will make a great player in the men’s ranks in the future. Clark Foster: We owe Clark an enormous debt of gratitude, playing up ahead of his years and leaving his peers behind, not to mention defending valiantly and skillfully in the face of those fierce Sutho and St George teams. We asked a lot of him…and he has been brilliant. He has trained hard, every week and has performed better than we could ever have hoped for – truly a great Goalie in the making. Thank you Clark. A goalie’s life is not the faint hearted, lazy or complaining, he has endured fast and slow games in admirable, stoic spirits. Hugh Foster: Hugh is another Redback who has made notable improvements with each game, showing his willingness and adaptability in a variety of positions. Hugh has a variety of talents, and hockey is only one of his many out-‐of-‐school activities; he does well to juggle everything without ever complaining and his positive, supportive and cheerful nature keeps us entertained both on and off the field. Cate Heath: Cate’s love of hockey is a joy to see. She is super motivated and has worked very hard all season, making great strides in her skill development and understanding of positions. She is always up high, ready for that next goal scoring opportunity. And nothing beats the look of sheer happiness and pride when she pops one in! Off the field, we love her chat in the dugouts, and her enthusiasm. Watch out Glebe Women’s First Grade – little Cate will be making her way there before too long! Zac McPherson: Zac is a delightful boy, with growing strength and much potential. He has contributed through his versatility, reliability and commitment. He has a mature and

thoughtful personality, and stands out to Audrey and me, for putting the team’s needs ahead of his own in a selfless way. He is a very popular member of the Redbacks Annie Millar: This girl has talent in spades. Her laconic approach to running the length of the field, dragging around one opponent after another and passing into the circle is trademark Annie. She has superb elimination skills and can hold possession like no other. But mostly it has been a complete pleasure to coach Annie this season because of her obvious developing leadership qualities and maturity. At training and in games she is always helping others, commenting positively and kindly on other’s play. Annie has the world at her feet and I look forward to seeing her make her mark in women’s hockey. Zane Goodridge: Zane has had a great season. Much stronger and faster, he is reading the play brilliantly and has been central to our defensive success, with the team relying on his consistent skills. We value Zane for being well developed in all areas of hockey and for being a thoughtful team member. He’s taken several nasty knocks from the opposition, yet never lets his determination wane. Edward Noble: Edward won this season's award for ‘best team player’ and he won it hands down. This is because he is the gentleman of the Redbacks, constantly working behind the scenes to champion his fellow players. He is composed and steady and Edward plays hard in any position he is placed-‐ he has a strong tackle in defence and he has a flair on the run, especially in attack. At training and in games Edward gives his best, his growing maturity this season is evident as is his warmth and sportsmanship at all times. Billy Pritchard: Another gem of the Redback team –everyone has a soft spot for Billy. It might be because of her determination or it might be because she is a thoughtful and endearing girl or perhaps it is her kindness to fellow players and the coach's puppy dog. Whatever it is, Billy is a loyal and loved team member. Her game has improved out of sight this season with the development of a lovely drag and some strategic thinking, with stunning flashes of skills, getting great outcomes when we need them most. Off the field she is undoubtedly the best listener -‐ always concentrating with her earnest approach to team talks (or quietly dreaming). Allegra Symonds: Allegra is the pocket rocket of the U13 Redbacks. She plays with heart and significant courage -‐ never holding back when faced with opponents often twice her size. Her petite stature betrays her strength and determination – put this girl in a tackle with a beefy boy from Sutherland and she will usually come out the other side with the ball firmly on her stick. Strong, determined and tactical, enthusiastic and cheerful, we wish Allegra all the best for her move to U15s next year. Michael Southwell: Mike is a speedy and talented player. He has superb timing and an instinct in front of the goal for the well-‐timed and accurate crack that has been accompanied by much gratitude by his peers and supporters. Definitely one for Glebe senior’s to keep an eye out for coming through! Mike has developed well throughout the season, making a real contribution in defence as well as attack. Orlando Travis: There is a lot to say about Orlando as a hockey player, best reflected by the fact that he won the “most outstanding player” award this year. Orlando is a strong, skillful and strategic player. His selection to the NSW U13 team was well deserved and filled us all with great pride. There is however also a lot that can be said about Orlando the boy and the role he plays in the team. And it is this side of Orlando I would like to make most of – he is

humble, thoughtful and caring of his teammates. He constantly praises and supports others, he has a lovely sense of humour, is a respected leader and he plays with enormous heart. I look forward to watching this outstanding young man progress through the junior and senior ranks. Congratulations Orlando! Sam Worthington: I am still silently applauding Sam's decision to leave soccer and join our ranks. All we need to do now is persuade him to take his hockey career further and try reps next year! He is a natural athlete and a natural attacker; lithe legs and a strong desire to win, propelling him down the pitch. He has a lovely warmth and cheeky style that has won both his coach and manager over in many occasions. I’ll be sorry to lose Sam to the U15’s next season, but hope Sam continues to love his hockey. That’s it my lovely Redbacks – thank you for making it such a rewarding and enjoyable ride. I sign off with pride and sincere thanks to Audrey who is an outstanding manager. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Audrey -‐ she is focused on the hockey and at the same time keeps it in perspective; she is an astute observer and supports the players in so many ways with her care and thoughtful praise. Audrey makes my job easy, she organises everything and everyone with constant charm. I will always have fond memories of our time in the dug out together and many shared (bags of snakes), moments of pride and just a few of chaos. Thank you also to the parents and families who are behind this lovely team. The support from the sidelines is always positive and in true Glebe style the pride is always collective. Particular thanks to Lindesay, Peter and Jamie who have stepped in to help out with training. Kate Alexander (Coach) Coach

U15 HORNETS
The Hornets returned in numbers in 2017 determined to improve their hockey and to score some goals. For most of the season we were competitive, either drawing or narrowly losing. A high point was the 2-‐0 defeat of Sutherland to sneak into the finals. Most of the team has played together for a number of years now (does help we have 9 siblings in the team!). After a slow start the team started to click with some really great teamwork and exciting hockey. A huge thank you to our long-‐suffering defenders who took many lessons from 2016 and never gave a soft goal away all season. So often the glory goes to the scorers in sport but goals are built on defence. I introduced a ‘Players Player’ award this year where everyone voted ‘3-‐2-‐1’ at the end of games. It was interesting how often the poll coincided with my sense of the best player on the day. A testament to the team spirit was that every player received votes, with 6 players ending within a few votes of each other. A big thank you to the other parents who stayed optimistic and encouraging throughout the year. Helen and Dee shared management duties again this season although others stepped up if and when needed. I think we all share genuine enjoyment seeing our kids play their best, look out for and encourage each other. Well done everyone and hopefully see you for another year of hockey in 2018. Here are some individual comments on the team:

Perri (Fearnley) grew in confidence and field awareness this year. Her marking was tight and consistently annoying for attackers. She saved the day on many occasions, with a strong clearance and breaking the play down. Ellie (Gibson) shone in many of our games this year, after an incredibly difficult 2016. Towards the end of the season we saw glimpses of another Ellie – a very determined and slightly bolshie hockey player. Ellie has only ever played well above her age (due to siblings) – one wonders how she would go in the 13s. Rose (Gibson) was somewhat reluctant to return to hockey but we were glad she did. Rose continues to improve as a goalkeeper and had some spectacular saves this season. Always happy to put the goalie gear on (even if frustrated at the ‘fat pants’) Rose was her own harshest critic. We might have to work hard on getting her back again next year (go to it girls!) Fifi (Gibson) was our surprise attack this season, stealthily getting in behind defenders. She scored a couple of goals, was close on many other occasions and helped others score. If we could only get that back stick happening she would be deadly. Toby (Knight) was in his second year of hockey and loved it so much convinced his younger brother to play. Toby has quick hands and deft touch often undoing attacks with the slightest of intercepts. He spent most of the year in the midfield although I think he would love a chance in the D. Sam (Knight) was new to hockey and playing u15s was quite challenging. Sam is hugely well liked among the team – for his sense of fun and bravery. A little lost at time Sam was a quick learner and happy to take advice/direction. His biggest fan was Toby, which as a mother of two boys I found somewhat surprising. Alex (Kraa) perfected cool nonchalance this year but surprised many defenders with his speed and skills. A bit of a slow starter (always preferring to come off the bench) the 8 am starts with frost on the ground was a challenge! Scored this season with many close calls created by his blistering pace. Ruben (Langenheim) was close to our best player every game. He created many raids down the wing, combining brilliantly with Lukas and Nicky. Scored a goal against the top team and went close on many other occasions. A senior player Ruben often had suggestions at half time and helped others out when he could. Peter (Lee) found his season hampered by injury and illness. Despite this he had a number of strong games, perfecting his flick and reverse stick play. He played strongly in the midfield and could be relied upon to drop to support the defenders. Peter was the first Glebe player I’ve seen who has made the goalie gear look small. Joanne (Lee) played in a range of positions throughout the year, although her preference was in the forwards. She scored an important goal against Bankstown, reminding us all what the backboard sounds like when hit hard. Zoe (Le Marinel) worked really hard on her fitness and her skills this year. She has continued to improve her hockey and seems to thrive on the fierce competition. Like many of the players, she is a great team player and celebrates others successes. She has developed a great trap and seems to be finding more time to make decisions. Liam (Maniaty) gave 110% every game again this season. He works very hard for the team, taking the ball on long forward attacks and then turning and dropping back to assist in defence. I’m never surprised when Liam picks up a ball in defence at the top of our D. He just keeps turning up. He was an important part of our attack, setting up numerous goals. Izzie (Raaijmakers) was another hockey debutant this season, although he made the transition from indoor soccer quickly. His fitness and work ethic was fantastic all season. His stick skills are still fairly raw but in a couple of seasons he will be consistently setting up or scoring goals.

Josh (Rawsthorne) played some great games this season and perfected his reverse stick sweep to great effect. He was one of the midfield that ran and ran and ran. He is an unselfish player, often passing to others in space sending our attack down field. His play with Izzy and Nicky was particularly strong. Lukas (Rawsthorne) joined the team a couple of games in when we were short. Lukas has been hanging around hockey fields for many years but had never played (due to clashes with other sport and being left handed). Quickly became a key defender, forming a great defensive group, clearing attacks and consistently starting attacking raids with a strong hit. Nicky (Vera) had another great season, with great timing and stick work. He brought a strong sweep into his game this year to add to his other trickery. A favourite was the ball backwards between his legs; although I did worry he might regret that big time if a defender got frustrated. Editors Note The Hornets qualified for the U15B SEHA Finals this season, but unfortunately lost their match against St George. Congratulations on a great season.

U15 STRIKERS
Team: Yanick Arambewela, Josie Armstrong Bunker, Lachlan Cummings Donnelly, Ben England, Abby Foster, Rebekah Goldsworthy, Leroi Kelly, Ashley Lim, Jemima Macpherson, Annabel Murphy, Amelie Roediger, Phoebe Rosser, Stella Sharwood, Anika Silink Coach Tim Kelly Manager Annie Fitzpatrick This team was created with kids coming together from different teams, of different ages and with kids that had never played hockey before. Even the coach was a novice to hockey. I had watched (quietly from the sidelines) my eldest daughter play for 8 years; I thought I knew enough to coach, how hard could it be??… So, when I turned up for the first training session I thought it would be good idea to do a quick 15-‐minute fitness session. The complaints started within about 5 minutes and I still had 55 minutes to go. OMG what have I got myself into? This coaching gig was going to be tougher than I thought. Coming from a rugby league background, I was completely under prepared. I did not know any hockey rules, the positions and could not even think about strategy or game plans. I started to think; there were too many things for this old brain to process... To be honest I cannot remember our first few matches as I was still getting my head around the game of hockey. To top it off I had to find a volunteer to be goalkeeper each week, which is never an easy task. As the weeks went on, my knowledge of the game expanded. Most of this knowledge came from asking the team, thank you kids, for helping me out with this. The training sessions

became more organised and the team got more familiar with each other. Even the fitness drills lasted longer than 5 minutes!! One of our aims for the season was to achieve a short corner, as we played most of our games in our own half, constantly defending our goal. It was disheartening at times but the team kept turning up for training and on game day, everyone was very enthusiastic and always encouraged each other. The game to remember was against St. Andrew’s on a cold wintery Friday night. If we were going to achieve our aim of a short corner this was it. We trained on the Tuesday night and got some tips from Glebe legend Terry Kelly, this was backed up by another training session on Wednesday. Some of the senior members of the group spoke to the rest of the team at training, saying that this game was our best chance to win. It was good to see them take responsibility and want to win. As previously mentioned our aim was to win a short corner. In this game, we had a multiple short corners, so mission accomplished. Then the unthinkable happened, we scored off the short corner and took the lead… This was unbelievable! Now the challenge would be to hang on to the lead. I started to bite my nails and my worry lines deepened. The second half saw St. Andrew’s have a million chances at goal. It was the longest half of hockey I have been involved in. Then our hearts sank as St. Andrew’s scored. No, this could not happen; this was not part of our plan. The disappointment on everyone’s faces was obvious. However, an angel appeared in the form of Ben England. He got the ball in the D and dribbled the ball around the goalkeeper into the goal. YEEESSS!!!! All the Glebe parents cheered and fist pumped the air. Now, could we hold on? To further complicate matters and add to the stress levels, the scoreboard was not working and so it seemed that time stood still. Fingernails were now close to being gone and there were constant questions about how much time was left. Finally, after another million shots at goal by St. Andrew’s, the final whistle blew. The team, the Strikers had done it. We had completely smashed our aims for the year and won a game. It was terrific to be part of that famous victory. It was so great to see the team so excited. It was like winning a grand final. I received many texts and emails from the Glebe Hockey family late that night and into the next day. This was actually very humbling to know that people outside our team showed an interest in us. It was very much appreciated. Personally, I really enjoyed observing how all the team interacted with one another. Everyone was treated with respect and no one was made to feel uncomfortable. It was an absolute pleasure coaching the 15A Strikers, I hope they all got something out of the season and had fun. To finish, there are a few people I would like to thank. Annie Fitzpatrick our manager for assisting me with emails and providing updates regarding training and game day information. Sue Heath, our SEHA Competition Coordinator who gave me good advice, as well as listening to our concerns during the year. To all the Striker parents who taxied their kids to and from hockey and for their loud and enthusiastic cheering. The kids really enjoyed hearing the encouragement from the sidelines. Lastly, I would like to thank the Strikers. What a great bunch of kids you all are! Congratulations, we are all very proud of you. Cheers,

U15 REDBACKS (Metro)
(Left to right) Back Aaron Nilan (Coach) Jasmine Howe, Olivia Cain, Sarah Brine, Asha Machin Hunt, Matthew West, Riley Nilan, Cameron Jones Front Emma Alexander Prideaux, Destiny Peris, Teagan Howe, Olive Currie, Layla Riley, Prudie Dallen, Talia Morrow It was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to coach this junior age group again this year. The team included a good mix of experience, with some players playing their first year of fifteens and others in their second year in the age group. The tough Metro Comp was always going to be a challenge, however I could see early on that this group of players were determined to give it their all in every game. To be honest, as a passionate player myself, I do tend to base the success of a season on results. We did take some heavy losses in the first half of the season against the top teams. But with determination and a willingness to never give up, the team had some really positive results and more confidence towards the back end of the season. During the last four games especially it was a pleasure to see the players come together with improvement and play well as a team. So looking at that, the success of this season was more than I could have hoped for. Well done. Training this year was especially enjoyable. We had good numbers at every session, which helped with the players working together. With some specific rules in place I am sure the players had some fun as well as gained some skills and knowledge from each session. I think they especially liked the rule of catching them without mouth guards in, which resulted in players doing some much loved shuttle runs. A lot of the time, the top of the sock where the mouth guard was stored, had more protection than their teeth. The No Nutmegs before 6pm was also a rule. Some of the girls were hard to control after 6pm, but was all a bit of fun.

We had a number of players who reached 100 junior games this year and also a fantastic effort to the four players that played every game of the season: Asha, Teagan, Jasmine and Layla. Well done. The Team Emma Alexander-‐Prideaux –Having coached Emma for a number of years, it was good to see her continue to improve her skills, become an excellent team player and watch her confidence grow. Emma plays a selfless game each week, creating many opportunities for the players around her. Another great season. Sarah Brine –Sarah is normally a defender but showed her strength and versatility playing mostly as a striker this year and scored a few goals. With her improved fitness throughout the year, she developed into a reliable player that put in an excellent effort in every game. A very good season. Olivia Cain – A consistent year and a solid player in the team. Has the ability to do the basics well and works hard all game. Played well in whatever position she was asked for the team. Olive Currie – One of the quiet players of the team, Olive was new to the Metro competition. Olive listened, asked questions and grew in confidence, strength and skill throughout the season. I know she will continue to improve and she will become an asset to the women’s teams in the future. Prudie Dallen –Prudie demonstrated her range of skills and talents and played well in both defensive and attacking positions for the team this year. She had an outstanding representative season and brought those skills to her club games each week. Always on her bike to get to the ball first and cause havoc to the opposition. Sometimes hard to keep quiet in change room. Another good year. Jasmine Howe – Another year where a lot of action came her way. Jasmine is continuing to grow in confidence on the field, and her first save of shots on goal and improved calling on the field was great. She also played in every game for U15 and stayed every Friday to play for most of the U17 Metro games as well. A fantastic effort and contribution from a loyal and hardworking Glebe Junior. Teagan Howe – A striker that became stronger with confidence throughout the season. Teagan started a little quietly but soon became one of our main front-‐runners, that was great in chasing down the opposition and doing her best to shut down their attack. Second in the goal scoring tally this season and played in every game. Asha Machin-‐Hunt – Asha is a delight to coach, always working hard and looking to support her teammates and improve her own game. Asha played consistently well in defence and always asked where she can improve. Go with your first instinct Asha, and back yourself; confidence will grow from there. Another good year. Cameron Jones – Cameron is a great team player and was an asset to our defence this year. Playing as our centre back defender for most of the season, he was constantly involved in the play and worked hard in every game. Cameron was very strong and improved throughout the season. Talia Morrow – Talia brings natural ability, enthusiasm and leadership to our team. A strong reliable team player, and she was another key player in our defence. Always talking on and off the field and brought a positive vide to the team during games and at training. Apparently the winner of the most nutmegs. Riley Nilan – Riley is an asset to the team, with his speed and skill in attack. Riley was our leading goal scorer this season. He also worked hard to get back in defence during games this year. A passionate player but at times needs a little more self control, it was good to see an improvement in this area from last year. An outstanding year and congratulations on your selection for the U15 NSW Blues team, U16 NSW All Schools Squad and Hockey NSW AAP Squad.

Destiny Peris – Destiny is a wonderful asset to our attack with her speed and determination. Would improve greatly with extra training with the team but a coach is always happy to see a striker run hard, never give up and create uncertainty in the opposition defence. Layla Riley – While one of our younger players, Layla brings considerable experience and skill to the team. Layla is able to contribute in many aspects of the game, and is strong in both attack and defence. She is fit and trains hard. Layla is a good runner of the ball and turned many opposition turnovers into great attacking plays. Congratulations on your U15 NSW Squad Selection. Matt West – Another versatile team player that played both in defence and in attack. Matt’s skills and strength improved greatly throughout the year, and the value of the experience gained from playing with the senior men’s teams was obvious. Matt consistently shows enthusiasm at training and games and was rewarded with a few cracking goals. I would like to thank the players for their effort they put in this season. To the parents, thank you for getting the kids to the trainings and games and most importantly your ongoing support throughout the year. I would also like to thank my fellow coaches in Metro competition Dean and Garnet for sharing training and their camaraderie and support this year, and the senior club for providing umpires each week. Allison, I do want to say thank you for coming out of retirement to manage this year. With hard work and focus in the off-‐season, maybe one day you’ll be as good as Garnet. (Ed. note: SO funny) I would like to wish all the players the best for the 2018 season and look forward to seeing you play well and keep improving in your respective teams. U17 REDBACKS (Metro)
(Left to right) Back Dean Morrow (Coach) Tim Pritchard, Jackson Howe, Jasmine Howe, Rodrigo Pedraza Luna, Lewis Francis, Jonah Riley, Susie Douglas Front Maddy Scott, Bridget Kelly, Izzy Shannon, Alanna Howe, Oliver Brownbill, Nic Moraitakis, Garnet Brownbill (Manager) This year’s Metro season was very demanding with every game a challenge for the team. Glebe commenced strongly and with six teams in the competition we were in the top 4 half way through the season. However, it was in the second half of the season that we struggled. We were without our shared goalkeeper for four weeks, purely due to logistical reasons and consequently finished out of contention to play finals. We had to rely our on field players to volunteer as goalkeepers and they did their best under trying circumstances; most of whom had never been in goals, let alone put a kit on before. The team is full of very talented players and they grew to play well as a cohesive team throughout the season. For the majority of the games, we were highly competitive and pushed our opposition. Many games were lost in the last 5 minutes and two after the siren had sounded. During the course of the season there were many constructive attacking raids; good ball movement and daring patterns of play, but sadly these often went unrewarded.

That leads me to say that although we were disappointed by the end result, the efforts of the players on and off the field including their commitment at training was always positive and the team gave 110%. Oliver Brownbill -‐ Is a player with plenty of skill and potential. Always a threat in attack, he displayed great pace and elimination skills. A fierce competitor throughout the course of the competition, he was often found in the front line of the attack and then when needed the last line of defence. May your success continue in the coming years. Susie Douglas – A fiery competitor who continually surprised opposition teams with her attack with the ball and determination when tackling. She has consistently improved in all aspects of her hockey and is eager to learn and willing to ask questions to do so. A wonderful season Susie. Lewis Francis – Lewis had another stellar year for Glebe. His improvement across all areas of his hockey was plain to see and he shows great potential to develop into a very good hockey player. A lot of Lewis’s success is due to the training he undertakes and if he continues to work hard at his hockey he will develop into an outstanding player. Alanna Howe -‐ Could play anywhere across the back and is a great tackler with deceiving pace. She has the ability to use her skills to also attack when needed and it was fantastic to see her ‘take on’ the opposition with some strong runs out of defence. As captain she led the team with her actions and is a mature and clever player, always reliable in defence and more then willing to put her body on the line. Jackson Howe – Jackson started the season in defence, a position that suits his long reach and closing speed well. However, his excellent elimination skills and vision meant that he was also very capable further up the field. Throughout the course of the season Jackson found himself creating many attacking runs down each wing, giving opposition sides plenty to think about. A wonderful season was finalised with an exceptional goal in his last junior game for Glebe. Jasmine Howe – A fantastic season. Her ability in the net grows all the time and her talk on the field improved during the competition. It was fantastic to see Jasmine gain confidence in her abilities and go outside her comfort zone, to attack the ball, which led to her making several brilliant sliding saves. She has a lot of successful years ahead of her and is an asset to the club. Bridget Kelly – Bridget has worked tirelessly to improve her game throughout the course of the season. A very versatile player who can play all over the park and this versatility can mainly be accredited to the hard work and dedication she has displayed at training, always putting in 100%. Congratulations on reaching 100 junior games and scoring two goals in the process. Nic Moraitakis – Nic has had an amazing season and has grown in confidence every game. Many an opposition team underestimated his pace and paid the price for doing so. Nic developed into a great attacking right wing half this season, possessing great strength both in attack and defence. It was a pleasure to watch Nic use his pace and run the ball out of defence. Tim Pritchard -‐ A very skillful player with plenty of potential and consistently one of our go to forwards. Tim has the uncanny ability to turn the seemingly impossible into something easily achievable and his desire to get the ball into the back of the net will create nightmares for many an opposing defence for years to come. An outstanding season. Rodrigo Pedraza Luna – Rodo reads the game extremely well and distributes effectively out from the back. This coupled along with his eagerness to run the ball out of defence has created many headaches for opposing teams. He is a very reliable and dependable player at the back but is just as comfortable further up the field. A wonderful season yet again, the teams Rock in defence.
Glebe Junior Report September 13, 2017

Jonah Riley – Is a skilled, versatile and determined player who has a strong work ethic. Always willing to do what is best for the team, Jonah was the first to put his hand up when the team was without a goalkeeper. This being said Jonah can and does play all over the field. Started the season in defence but finished in attack, the penultimate all rounder. Well done. Maddy Scott -‐ Maddy quietly went about her business in defence creating headaches for opposition attacks. She is highly skilled; a powerful hit and shows great determination in tackling and winning back the ball. Her ability to position herself off the ball is an asset to any team and is indicative of a knowledgeable and competent player who will only continue to develop in the coming years. Izzy Shannon -‐ Was one of the great characters of the team. She was steady, reliable and had pace. Her improved stick skills and the introduction of the Tomahawk within her bag of tricks meant that Izzy often caught opposition teams unawares. It was always a pleasure to see her smiling even if things were not going to plan on the field. Another outstanding year. Special Mentions and Thank You

GLEBE CARNIVAL REPORT 2017
The 2017 Glebe Juniors Carnival, dedicated to our U9, U11 and U13 teams was held under perfect conditions on Sunday 27th August at Jubilee Oval. With 7 Glebe teams raring to go and an additional 7 visiting teams from 5 clubs, our carnival participation rate continues to grow from strength to strength. This year we also included a finals round for both U11’s and U13’s, on the very simple premise that the two teams leading on points in the last round goes into the final. Coupled with an orienteering / treasure hunt for our U9 teams, the format of the day worked extremely well. Back by popular demand was our fantastic carnival Cake Stall. Our very talented and generous bakers within our club excelled on their baking ability this year. We’re starting to wonder if the carnival is about hockey or cakes! In fact we’re not overly sure what the kids would say if we asked that question. Thank you to the incredible support crew who volunteered their time to ensure the Carnival’s success. Your incredible willingness to support our club is fantastic and is the backbone of our achievements. A very special thank you goes to Nick Bell who donated his time and energy in the design and production of all the Carnival trophies, ensuring that every child that played and umpired -‐ walked away with a very unique memory. Nick -‐ you are fantastic. Congratulations to all teams that participated in the true spirit of the Carnival and to Northern Districts and St George Randwick for winning their finals. Now, onto 2018… Sue Heath and Lester Currie
