The Placement Committee of Government Law College is one of the most important Committees of
the College, shouldering the responsibility of providing a stepping stone to success to budding
lawyers graduating from the college.
The Committee aims at exhausting all possible opportunities of recruitment with law firms,
counsel, LPOs and corporate houses. It acts as a link between the recruiters and the students,
thereby fulfilling the needs of both, and enabling the students to get placements on campus. The
members of the Placement Committee strive hard to ensure that maximum students from the
college get placed, thus providing them with an opportunity to optimize their skills.
The Annual On-Campus Recruitment Programme 2015 - 2016 was a huge success, as the Placement
Committee, true to its motto, succeeded in having more than 100 top law firms, counsel and
corporate houses recruit our students.
Since the last few years, the Placement Committee has been implementing the recruitment process
throughout the year, thus functioning all year through. The Committee organizes two placement
weeks throughout the year, one in September, which is exclusively for associates, and another in
February, which covers Associates, Article Clerks and Interns. This widening scope of the
Committee is sure to benefit both the students and the potential employers.
The participation of a large number of students, lawyers, solicitors, law firms and corporate houses
was a source of inspiration for all students who work zealously for the Committee, and will
encourage them to undertake the Recruitment Program of the current academic year with even
greater zeal and enthusiasm.

Chairman's Message
The Placement Committee, that is the Recruitment Coordination Committee, of the college works
ardently throughout the year to ensure that the students get every available opportunity of
recruitment with law firms, LPOs, counsels or corporate houses.
The bi-annual recruitment Programme 2015-16 witnessed par excellence and over whelming
response both from law firms and corporate houses, which made the recruitment Programme a great
success. All the hard work and sincerity of the committee members paid off. Needless to say, it is our
endeavor to make the recruitment Programme 2016-17 a grand success.
The Placement Cell strives for professionalism, commitment and fairness. Above all, it strives for the
promotion of strong relationships between the recruiters and the campus for the ultimate benefit of
both of them. We sincerely hope that our bond with the past recruiters is only strengthened and a
strong bond is made with the new recruiters.
It would indeed be our privilege to cater to your requirements of interns, articled clerks and
associates ( batch of 2017-2018) . The detailed procedure is mentioned in the brochure.

Looking back in time, one becomes aware of the immeasurably important role this pioneering law institute has played
in the judicial, political, social and historical background of India. Legal luminaries like Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of
the Indian Constitution, Justice M. C.Chagla, former Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Lokmanya Tilak, freedom
fighter, Sir Motilal Setalvad, the first Attorney-General of Independent India, Smt. Prathiba Patil, Hon'ble Ex-President
of India, Mr. Goolam E. Vahanwati, the Attorney-General of India and many other prominent personalities have left
their footprints behind for time immemorial. Today, one cannot help but relive all those memorable moments which
contributed to making this institution the most distinguished law college in the country. With a heritage spanning more
than a century and a half, the Government Law College, Mumbai, has dominated the legal landscape of India since 1855.
The College is a staunch believer in the importance of knowledge and the freedom of expression. It is an educational
institution endowed with a tremendously scholastic environment, a thoroughly competent faculty and professionally
focused students. Along with a rigorous curriculum, the college boasts of several co-curricular activities such as Moot
Court Competitions, Debates, publishing of the Law Review and College Magazine, providing Legal Aid, etc. It believes
that it is essential to bring together the youth of today in spirited debate and discussion, to facilitate a better
understanding and to tackle the global issues faced today. Before 1855, there was no formal legal education for legal
officers and lawyers in this country. In the same year, the Government Law School was established at the Elphistone
Institute. Government Law College, Mumbai, which completed its sesquicentennial year in 2005, is one of the premier
law colleges in India and has produced scores of distinguished alumni who have made an enduring impact on the legal
jurisprudence of the country.
WHY GLC ?
GLC believes in the blend of imparting education along with gaining practical experience, thus ensuring that students
are well versed with the intricacies of the practical application of law in diverse areas, even before graduating.
Solicitors: Government Law College is one of the few legal institutions which gives its students an opportunity to enrol
for the Solicitors' Exams while undergoing their Graduation studies. Taking full advantage of being situated in the
financial capital of India, the students of GLC work as article clerks simultaneously, thereby fulfilling one of the
requirements of a full-fledged solicitor.
Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, Chartered Financial Accountant: Students get an opportunity to undergo
add-on professional courses like C.S, C.A and C.F.A. These courses enable students to expand their knowledge and
awareness even as fresh graduates.
INTERNSHIPS: Corporate / Law Firms / LPOs: Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, is home to several Law Firms,
Corporate Houses and MNCs. Due to flexible lecture timings, students start pursuing their internships from the second
year of college itself. Thus, at the time of graduation, they have the expertise and knowledge, which can be considered
to be at par with working law professionals. GLC is the only educational institution which exposes its students to a
Pandora of work opportunities in the legal field.
Judicial: The proximity of the college to the Bombay High Court offers yet another incentive to the college students.
They undergo internships under sitting judges, counsel and senior counsel. The presence of famous legal luminaries at a
close proximity to the college encourages our students to go beyond the curriculum and undertake long-term
internships and thus enables them to outshine others in the practical field. During college vacations, our students have
successfully interned with Supreme Court judges as well.

The Magazine Committee of Government Law College, Mumbai, traces its origin to the year 1930. Since its inception, the Committee has evolved in a way so as to keep abreast of changing times. The annual college magazine published by the Committee is méLAWnge, adapted from the French word 'mélange', which means a fusion or blend. It mirrors the diverse range of activities – from moot courts to social service – witnessed by GLC every year. Its miscellany exhibits the talent, art, and creative genius of potential writers, poets, and authors, while providing a dash of much needed humour. The committee conducts two annual, national-level essay writing competitions – the Vyas Government Law College National Legal Essay Writing Competition and Belles Lettres: J. E. Dastur Memorial Short Fiction Essay Writing Competition, as well as an intra-college essay writing competition – the Sir Dinshah Mulla Legal Essay Writing Competition. The flagship event of the Magazine Committee is Knock-Out! – an enthralling debate based on a relevant legal matter.
LAW REVIEW
The 'Law Review', being the core publication of legal research and writing of the college, provides a platform for students to hone their writing skills and display their originality of thought. Articles, being a reflection of the broadening horizon of the students' vision and interdisciplinary approach to writing, range from fields as varied as Securities Law and IPR, Taxation and Cyber Laws and even issues like the entry of foreign law firms into India.
This Journal has published articles written by Justice Roshan Dalvi, Justice S. Radhakrishnan, Justice V.G. Palshikar and Justice D.R.Dhanuka on various topics.The Law Review of Government Law College, Mumbai was privileged to have former late Chief Justice of India,Mr. Y.V. Chandrachud as its Editor-in-Chief.

7th Government Law College International Law Summit, 2016
thSupported by the World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva, the 7 Government th stLaw College International Law Summit was held from the 29 January to 31
January 2016, with 'International Telecommunication Laws' as the Theme. A resounding success, the Summit received attention from myriad sections of the intelligentsia and the legal fraternity from all over the country and around the world.The Summit comprised of key note addresses, lectures, workshops, a Call for Papers Competition, and two novel competitions- the Judgment Deliberation Competition and the Treaty Appreciation Competition, which were both conceived within the portals of Government Law College, and are unique to SPIL, Mumbai.While the main highlight was a Webinar with Ms. Lee Tuthill, Counselor, Trade in Services Division, WTO, Geneva on the topic 'What we have learned: Telecom and ICT in WTO dispute settlement cases', seminars were conducted by legal stalwarts like Mr. Kabir Duggal, Senior Associate, Baker & McKenzie, New York, U.S.A and Mr. Supratim Chakraborty, Principal Associate, Khaitan & Co.. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Edward G. Baldwin, Partner, Baker & McKenzie, Washington D.C., U.S.A.One of the crucial and exciting aspects of the Summit was the Panel Discussion, which facilitated an inspiring discussion on 'A Network-Neutral India – An Exigence Really?' that featured eminent panelists including Mr. Vismay Shroff, Associate, Parimal K. Shroff & Co., Mr. Edward G. Baldwin, Partner, Baker & McKenzie, Ms. Aditi Saxton, Senior Editor, Mumbai Mirror, Mr. Brijesh Singh, Inspector General of Police (Cyber), Senior IPS Officer, Maharashtra Police, Mr. Rohas Nagpal, Founder President, Asian School of Cyber Laws, Mr. Akshay Nagpal, Partner, JSA, Gurgaon, and Mr. Shardul Thacker, Senior Partner, Mulla & Mulla & Craigie Blunt & Caroe, who deftly moderated the Panel Discussion.SPIL also undertook to organize interactive workshops and informative guest lectures, throughout the year, at Government Law College, keeping up with its motive of promoting International Law among students.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS (MUN) SOCIETY thThe Government Law College Model United Nations Society is in its 9 year
and has been successful in inculcating the diplomatic discipline of a Model
UN Conference amongst the students.
The committee conducts an Intra MUN conference, various workshops and
Group Discussions that aim at introducing, teaching and educating the
students about the art of negotiation, peacekeeping, and debating in the
capacity of International diplomats, for in its belief, it is essential to bring
together the youth of today in spirited debate and discussion, to facilitate a better understanding and tackle the global
issues faced by the world today. Delegations are regularly sent to various prestigious MUN conferences all across the
nation and abroad, where students win laurels and make the college proud. After meticulous preparation throughout
the duration of the Academic year, the Society organises flagship event, India's most sought after MUN conference, THE
GLCMUN! The Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker for this event's previous edition was Hon'ble Member of Parliament,
Author, Motivator and Asia's most loved Quiz Master, Derek O'Brien and the event witnessed International
Participation along with a highly competent Executive Board. They collaborated with the UN initiative 'HeForShe' that
promotes gender equality and women empowerment in all walks of life. Over the years, the society has followed a strict
Environmental Policy by eliminating all use of plastic, segregating wastes, using recycled paper and reducing paper
wastes thus, shouldering its social and moral responsibilities with utmost efficiency.
DEBATING
The Debating and Literary Society, fondly known as
'DebSoc' is one society at GLC which purely aims towards
creating and promoting debating and public speaking
among the students. DebSoc provides ample
opportunities to the students helping them hone their
oratory skills and allowing exchange of ideas by way of
discussions and debates. Regular debate practices and
Round Up sessions help the students improve upon their
oratory and reasoning skills. Based upon their
performance at inter- collegiate competitions and
internal eliminations, students are given the opportunity
to represent the college at various national level debate competitions. 'Policy Conclave' and 'Nishith Desai
Parliamentary Debate Global Competition' are the two flagship events of DebSoc. While Policy Conclave aims to
familiarise college as well as school students with issues of national as well as international importance by providing a
platform of interaction with experts on such issues, the Parliamentary Debate Competition aims at creating a name for
GLC in the national debating circuit by providing a platform which witnesses quality debates among students across the
country. Aiming to expand their vision, DebSoc has come up with a nascent initiative 'Debate For A Cause' in
collaboration with Bombay Progressive Fellowship Society to inculcate a debating culture among students of the state
board alongside building the personality of these students by teaching them more than what is there in their textbooks.
DebSoc is a student run ambitious society which seeks to achieve all-inclusive improvement in the personality of
students, both inside and outside college.

The College has more than 14 Committees which provide a diverse and enriching experience to the students in different facets of life. The Moot Court Association, Students’ Council, Legal Aid, Magazine Committee, Law Review, SPIL, Social Service League, Sports Committee, Dramatics Committee, Gujarati Mandal, Hindi Parishad and the Music Circle help in the overall development of the students.
MOOT COURT ASSOCIATION (M.C.A.) The Moot Court Association is a vibrant body of 65 members and 12 core members who work throughout the year to promote mooting as a co-curricular activity. Year after year, it hosts 5 of India’s best moot court competitions as well as coordinates several workshops and activities within the college, not only to enable students to excel in the numerous moot court competitions that GLC participates in, but also to train the first year entrants in the skill of mooting.

LEGAL AID COMMITTEELegal Aid Committee has varied and diverse activities to be undertaken which range from providing pro bono legal opinion to needy people, spreading awareness in Mumbai on various current socio-legal issues, teaching juvenile delinquents and preparing bail applications for prison inmates. The Committee is comprised of four avenues namely Legal Aid Cell, Legal Awareness Cell, Dongri Juvenile Home Visits and Jail Visits. The year starts with ANNUAL INTRA COMMITTEE PRESENTATION COMPETITION. New members in the committee participate in the competition in a team of 7-8 members and present their views on the topic assigned. The topics are current socio-legal issues.
The committee provides Pro Bono Legal Opinion to people in need. The matters are related to family law, property law, labour law and criminal law. The committee conducts an Intra-College Competition 'Expressions' in collaboration with Majlis on women Centric Issues. The committee takes its members for Lokadalat Session in the High Court of Bombay where they witness the hearing of various cases and get firsthand experience of the procedure in Lokadalat. Members involve themselves in Writing Articles on current socio-legal issues in a group of 7-8 students. They discuss and analyze the issues, work in teams and thereafter write articles which are published on the Legal Aid group on Facebook. The committee is associated with Resource Cell for Juvenile Justice of Tata Institute of Social Sciences for an internship programme, open to the students of the college. Students volunteered for Help Desk Legal Intervention set up in Observation Homes which helped them in understanding of implementation of the laws and procedures.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONThe Alumni Association (Students’ Wing) is a committee which engenders a
bond between the college and its ex- students. The committee works under
the tutelage of the Alumni Association, the Parent Body, whose sole aim is to
strive for the amelioration of the College. The association conducts the
following events viz, Effective Communication Skills Workshop, The Pune
study Tour, The Delhi Study Tour, Principal Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Lecture, Guest
Lecture series, Nivedita Nathany Memorial Award for ‘Best Leadership Qualities
and Academic Excellence, a cricket match between the students and Alumni and a felicitation ceremony every 5 years to
felicitate illustrious Alumni.
STUDENTS’ COUNCILThe Students' Council of Government Law College, Mumbai, a constitutional body under the Mumbai University Act, is
the apex body to address grievances of students of the College and work towards their welfare. It seeks to enhance
cooperative interaction among faculty, administrative staff and students and consequently, ensure smooth functioning
of activities in the College. The Council keeps students abreast of several opportunities available, through its Facebook page, such as contributing
to legal journals, attending discussions and seminars and pursuing weekly courses online. The Students' Council hosts the orientation ceremony for the students every year. It organizes lectures by judges of the
Bombay High Court, eminent lawyers and jurists. It hosts various panel discussions in order to engage students in a
more communicative and interactive academic culture. It conducts the M.C. Chagla Lecture Series in collaboration with
the M.C. Chagla Memorial Trust wherein scholars, largely in the field of law, are invited to deliver lectures and share
their learning experiences with the students. Lastly, the Council also strives to maintain an effective link between the
college and its alumni by often inviting alumni of the College to give lectures, conduct seminars or share their
experiences, in the legal world or while studying abroad.
SPIL
In an increasingly integrated world, with growing trans-national interactions, the significance of international law has
never been greater. International events have come to dominate the domestic landscape. In order to understand the
tumultuous nature of international relations and to promote a greater awareness and understanding of international
law, the students of Government Law College, Mumbai
formed Students for the Promotion of International Law,
Mumbai (SPIL, Mumbai). SPIL, Mumbai seeks to promote
international law, encourage communication and
cooperation among students and lawyers internationally,
contribute to legal education, promote social responsibility in
the field of law, increase opportunities for students to learn
about other cultures and legal systems worldwide and
publicize educational and career opportunities in
international law. The members of SPIL, Mumbai, strive
towards taking legal studies to another level for a better tomorrow.

The committee collaborated with the Legal Aid Clinics of Law Schools like NLSIU Bangalore, Christ University etc. [Indian Legal Awareness & Aid Network (ILAAN)] with an aim to provide legal aid and awareness in a unified manner across the whole country. Interactive sessions are conducted for the juvenile delinquents. Functions are organized for festivals like Ganapati Celebration and Republic Day where juveniles actively take part by the medium of skit, dance and songs. Juveniles are also taught Elementary Mathematics and members of the committee conduct Drawing Competition for the juveniles. Certified Vocational Training course was introduced for juveniles in collaboration with Yuva Parivartan. They were taught mobile repairing for one month. The committee also organizes and attend Various Workshops on Socio-Legal Issues, and works to spread awareness among people on various issues.
The College, situated in the busy, bustling area of Churchgate, houses huge classrooms over three spacious floors along with the library, Auditorium, Canteen etc. The institution also has an annexe building with additional classrooms, seminar rooms and a library.
ELECTRONIC RESEARCH ROOM (ERR)
The ERR is as a state-of-the-art facility which provides the students and professors of the College, access to the Internet and various legal research databases. The ERR has subscribed to Manupatra, Legalpundits, two online legal databases, SCC Online and Lexis Nexis.
LIBRARY
This is a centre of great activity in GLC. The library and reading room on the third floor, named after Harilal J.Kania, can actually boast of maximum attendance. The library has a massive collection of books on literally every topic a law student would require. It is a centre for all kinds of research, study and even animated discussions about controversial matters. It houses the prestigious original copy of the 'Indian Penal Code' drafted by Lord Macaulay.

L.L.M. and Other Courses
The University of Mumbai conducts the course for the LL.M. Degree. The LL.M. degree of the University of Mumbai
enables students to develop their interests in many of the major areas of law to which they have been introduced in
the LL.B. course and also provides opportunities for the study of important specialized areas.
Post Graduate Certificate Course In Human Rights: The primary goal is to develop participants' ability to think
critically, understand and deliberate on the intricacies of Human Rights. The course is adequately interspersed with
field visits as this would expose participants to the means available for the protection of human rights.
Postgraduate Diploma Course In Securities Law
Recognising the growing importance of India's Capital Market and in keeping with its pioneering role in Indian Legal
Education, the Government Law College, Mumbai, offers a one-year Postgraduate Diploma Course in Securities Law
which is the first of its kind in India. Admission is open to candidates holding a Bachelor's Degree from any faculty of
the University of Mumbai or an equivalent degree from any other University, having a basic knowledge of Corporate
Laws. The course is conducted by visiting faculty from law firms, RBI and SEBI.
Post Graduate Diploma In Intellectual Property Rights
IPR is emerging as a critical field of law, for protection of intellectual property in the form of patents, trademarks,
copyright or design, with its demand increasing constantly. Admission is open to candidates holding a Bachelor's
Degree from any faculty of a recognised university. This course is useful not only to lawyers, but also to engineers,
doctors, etc. especially with respect to knowledge about patents and copyrights.
Diploma In Cyber Law
Information Technology has pervaded every aspect of human life and it is essential for law students to keep
themselves abreast of the latest developments in this nascent but rapidly evolving legal field. Accordingly, since the
year 2004-2005, the Government Law College has been conducting a "Diploma in Cyber Law" course, in association
with the Asian School of Cyber Law.

Recruiters' Registration:Interested recruiters are requested to fill the Firm Profile provided separately with this brochure (along with
authorized signature signifying their consent) and send it to the Placement Committee, Government Law College on
or before 25th January, 2017. By filling the firm profile, the recruiter agrees to participate in the Recruitment Program.
Students' Registration:Ÿ Student registration desks will be opened after the Firm Profiles are displayed in college.
Ÿ Interested students will be required to fill a Student's Registration Form and submit it to the Placement Committee
with their resumes.
Ÿ The CV collection shall be undertaken from 27th - 29th January 2017 and the same will then be forwarded to the
Recruiters.
Ÿ The Interviews shall take place between 4th-20th February, 2017. Ÿ All communication must be through the Placement Committee. Recruiters must not, in any case, communicate
any offers directly to the candidates.

Recruitment Process:Ÿ Recruiters may, in accordance with their own policy, conduct a Recruitment Process of their preference: On-
Campus Interviews, Off-Campus Interviews, Group Discussions, Written Tests, etc.
Ÿ Recruiters shall, as far as possible, adhere to the process mentioned by them in their Recruitment Registration
Form. Any change in the Recruitment Process of the Recruiter must be communicated to the Placement
Committee well in advance.
Ÿ Recruiters are requested to mail or deposit with the Placement Committee, their list of selected candidates along
with a list of candidates, who have been wait-listed, in order of their preference.
Ÿ The above list should be sent to the Placement Committee, Government Law College and labeled as “Placement
Committee” on or before the date which will be communicated to the recruiters.
Ÿ The selected candidates who feature on more than one Recruiters List will be given the liberty of accepting the
offer of their choice. In the event of a selected student not joining a Recruiter, for any reason whatsoever, the
candidates on the waiting list will be elevated. This will be done according to the order of preference given by the
recruiters. The final decision of the candidates will thereafter be intimated to the Recruiters.
