The Gateway Learning Community is Balmoral State High School, Bulimba State School, Cannon Hill State School, Morningside State School, Murarrie State School, Norman Park State School and Seven Hills State School. ISSUE 30 JUNE 2011 10 years of Under 8’s Big Day’s Out has been made possible because of the combined work and support of many, many people, businesses and organisations. Many of them have been involved for the whole ten years or have joined at some point along the way and become firmly entrenched as part of the Under 8’s Big Day Out Family! They deserve our thanks. Firstly, the hugest thanks of all goes to Lynelle Whittaker, the mainstay of the event; there from the very beginning, calmly, generously and caringly planning and shaping the event so that it stayed true to its early childhood goals, where children are encouraged to use all their senses to discover, explore and learn about the wonders of the world around them. Lynelle is supported by an amazing team of staff, students and parents from Seven Hills SS lead by Principal Michelle Morrissey. The half way point of the school year is not far away, and plenty has already happened in the Gateway Learning Community (GLC) both to build links across the seven state schools and as a result of established links. In this edition of the GLC newsletter we celebrate, amongst other things, recent collaborative opportunities including our annual grand celebration of early childhood for Under 8’s Week-‘Big Day Out’, top quality professional development for GLC staff, and the Mother’s Day High Tea to support GLC Chaplaincy. The success of these events is evidenced in the articles and photos, and indicates a depth of leadership and skills that exist within the various GLC committees who have managed these projects. Thank you to all who have been involved on every level! But there is little time to dwell on past achievements. As Term 2 unfolds a new set of learning opportunities and challenges are underway for the GLC’s 2600 students and their families. One in particular, the GLC Performance Project- Common Thread- is coming to fruition. Its success depends on the attendance of the wider community as well as GLC students, staff and families. Page 3 has all the details. Tickets at participating school offices or at the door at the performances. We hope you enjoy this issue of the GLC newsletter, so generously sponsored by our business advertisers. Above - Pet City brought little creatures for the children to study. Each school nominates key staff to assist with planning and stage activities on the day and send groundsmen to assist set up the infrastructure. Thankyou to all of you! It takes a lot of work and long term planning to bring it all together on the day, which you do expertly. The GLC has been privileged to have since 2006 a group of loyal sponsors which support this event both financially and in-kind, coordinated by the indefatigable Deanne Hansom from LJ Hooker Cannon Hill. There is nothing that Deanne can’t make happen by bringing together the good will of some wonderful local businesses. It was an amazing sight to see around 700 Prep to Yr 2 students from GLC primary schools, all together, having as much hands on educational fun as they could fit into one day! Every little one’s face seemed to be painted; there were seeds and paint and string and wool being wound, glued and daubed; there were children crawling through a black maze and swinging on a bridge made of ropes; AFL and soccer skills were tried, police sirens triggered and fire hoses aimed. There were Old Macdonald’s Farm alpacas and goats to pat, Pet City crabs to watch racing, and music being made. From one end of the school grounds to the other, there were activities galore. This was Under 8’s ‘Big Day Out’, a special annual day for GLC early childhood students at which they could explore, discover, experiment and play to their hearts content. 2011 was the 10th Anniversary of this GLC community event, hosted by Seven Hills SS with their great range of undercover, oval, bush and garden settings in which a whole range of different activities found perfect spots to set up. Children from Norman Park SS, Murarrie SS and Bulimba SS travelled by bus from their schools to join their Seven Hills SS compatriots, to be chaperoned around in small groups by teachers, teacher’s aides and volunteer parents. The groups were free to wander from activity to activity as interest took them, participating in the multitude of activities and games in celebration of early childhood. Special guests from the GLC schools included the Balmoral SHS Yr 11 Early Childhood students as face painters, Balmoral SHS Cheerleaders and Soccer stars and Seven Hills SS Yr 6 and 7 students as crazy clowns. New this year, and fitting perfectly into the theme of ‘Bush to Beach’, was Nancy Kent’s plant propagation activity. Nancy is a Morningside local who has set up an ‘Inspiration Garden’ at her home which she opens up for the public. Thankyou Nancy for coming along this year. We hope you get some new visitors to your garden. Be cyber awareBrett Lee was a Queensland Police Detective in the field of Child Exploitation and international specialist in the field of undercover internet child exploitation investigations.

Brett addressed a small but riveted audience at an information evening staged for GLC parents on Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying on the evening of 17th May at Balmoral SHS Hall. He emphasisedthe fantastic value of the digital technology, like the internet and mobile phones, but demonstrated tothe audience some of its insidious dangers using genuine examples drawn from his professional experience.

His message to parents was clear. The digital world is exactly the same as the real world. Take thesame parental precautions, use the same parental judgement and follow the same parental instinctsas you would in normal everyday life. Teach your children to treat people online with the same courtesy, and in certain cases caution, as if they were talking to them face to face. Don’t take at face value whatanyone posts in a chat room or a game site. If in any doubt at all, or if you are uncomfortable with whatis being said or shown to you, there is a simple first line of defence- turn the device off and seek trusted

advice.

There was so much more that Bretthad to say about • Chatrooms • Facebook • MSN Messaging • Cyber Bullying – The real impact for

everybody • Phone, camera and video use • Illegal Downloads • Predator Methodologies • Protective & Preventative safety

measures

Take the time to visit Brett Lee's websiteat www.iness.com.au to learn more.

Thankyou Balmoral SHS’s Head of ICTs, Sara Johnston, for organising Brett’s presentations toBalmoral SHS’s Yr 11 and 12 students and GLC parents, and to Brett Lee for his valuable advice.

How to borrowGLC gearThe GLC over the years has amassed equipment resourceswhich are available to be borrowed by all schools and theirP&Cs - mostly electrical equipment such as power boxes andleads, fluorescent and spot lighting and trestle tables- whichmay be of use for fetes and other public events in schools. These are now stored at the new GLC shed at Cannon Hill SS.

If staging a school/community event it is worth having a lookat the Asset Register which is published on the GLC websiteunder ‘GLC Projects’.

Arrangements for borrowing can be made by calling the GLCoffice on 3399 6821 or emailing [email protected]

PaCE ‘reaches in’PaCE stands for Parent and Community Engagement.

The PaCE program is a community driven initiative which uses creative andinnovative approaches to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenousschool students through enhancing Indigenous parental engagement withschools and education providers.

PaCE actively ‘reaches in’ to schools, developing partnerships to bring localAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families together to build a culture ofshared responsibility in the education of the children. Educational supportworkshops and courses for parents and teachers aides, special family events,

and community gatherings are the sorts of activities which are being conducted and planned. The programis run locally by Trackers Queensland, based at an office at Gundala Indigenous Kindergarten Wynnum, and directed by Cheryl Thompson and David Osbourne. Cheryl and David are two Indigenous teacherswith over 30 years combined experience who have taught in a range of educational settings in SouthEast Queensland and who strongly advocate PaCE as a model for success.

Balmoral SHS has recently hosted two community gatherings to which Balmoral SHS and GLC Primaryschool families were invited. From these gatherings two local community clusters of 5 or 6 parentseach have been created, which is a fabulous beginning for the program.

Other local Indigenous families are invited to join the program. There is plenty of room to join the existing clusters or form another. Teacher aides in GLC schools are also encouraged to look for professional development opportunities through Trackers PaCE. As David says, the purpose of theprogram is simple, “to help you help your kids.”

For more information contact the Tracker’s PaCE Program by calling either Cheryl on 0412 028471 or David on 0412 028 475, or by emailing them at [email protected].

If you had happened upon the group of 22 GLC teachers on the afternoon of 5 May, mucking around with miniature bike jumps, a hot wheels racewayset, plastic cars and marbles you might be forgiven thinking that they had all lost theirs…marbles that is….

But in fact these teachers were hard at work, participating in the first of four GLC ‘Science Sparks’ professional development workshops being staged bythe Balmoral SHS Science Department in 2011. This first workshop, which explored fun, practical experiments to demonstrate scientific principles aroundforces and energy, was delivered by Science teacher Chris Meagher at Balmoral SHS. The workshop supported a common unit of work that has been written

by GLC primary and secondary science teachers and is being trialled in Yr 7 in GLC primaryschools this term.

Further units of work and allied practicals on other Science topics are being prepared for trial inTerms 3 and 4 by a staff team with representatives drawn from each participating GLC school. These regular planning sessions and workshops are building capacity within the primary schoolsin the teaching of Science whilst establishing links to the Balmoral SHS Science Department forcurriculum support, equipment borrowing and practical advice.

By working across sectors this way the continuity of science learning through upper primary tohigh school is also taking place.

Over two days in April seventy-six excited students, nine professional artists and ten teachers, gathered at theheritage listed ex Queensland Museum building for theCommon thread ‘Intensive’ to bring to life the creative andproduction elements for Common Thread 2011- ChooseHappiness.

Home to Qld Arts groups such as Qld Youth Orchestra, Qld National Ballet and Zen Zen ZoPhysical Theatre Co., the Old Museum proved an inspirational setting with its windingstaircases, mirrored studios, creaking wooden floors, dark panelling, stone work and hugeauditorium transporting everyone into a magical theatrical world, to bring out everyone’screative best! The Intensive marked the half way point for Common Thread rehearsalsbuilding on the work already done over many Friday afternoons.

Cannon Hill SS was a finalist in this year’s Healthy Queensland Awards winning$50,000 and being recognised for helping students, staff and parents increase their intake of healthy foods.

The Healthy Queensland Awards, delivered by the Queensland Government in partnershipwith Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, is a state-wide competition to find Queensland's healthiest community, Queensland's healthiest school and Queensland'shealthiest workplace. The awards aim to recognise, motivate, reward and support communities, schools and workplaces for helping Queenslanders live healthier lives.

MP for Bulimba, Di Farmer, said she was pleased to see a local school recognised for itsefforts in improving the health of students and their families. “It’s great that teachersand volunteers will also benefit from increased training as a result of the $50,000 they received for being named a finalist,” Ms. Farmer said.

The prize money will help the school expand its gardening and cooking program and purchase equipment including fridges and ovens.

A first for Common Thread 2011 are two regional partnerships that have been created between the GLC, the Qld Theatre Company and Pioneer SHS in Mackayand Good Shepherd Catholic College in Mt Isa.

The two regional schools have been working with Katie Stewart, Education Liaison Officerwith the Queensland Theatre Company, and the Common Thread team to link into theCommon Thread creative process and produce their own works for inclusion in the‘Choose Happiness’ production.

At Pioneer SHS in Mackay, students have been staging various surprise ‘happiness’ performances in recent weeks as part of their Common thread involvement. TeacherJuliana Guinane explains one such performance - a Flashmob-where a large group ofseemingly random people unexpectedly and simultaneously break into song or dance in apublic space. Juliana said, “We performed a Flashmob on school assembly. I evenarranged a group of teachers to join the Flashmob at the end - which shocked thosestudents who were taking part in the project.” Yr 12 students at Pioneer SHS are nowediting footage for their ‘Choose Happiness’ documentary which will be shown as part of the Common Thread show.

Meanwhile, across the state in Mt Isa, students from Good Shepherd Catholic College, facilitated by teacher Anna Telford, have been gathering video of their ‘Basel Mask FreeHugs walk’ and ‘Happy Dance’ footage taken on location round Mt. Isa, to bring togetherinto one video clip for the Common Thread show.

Downtown Toyota will donate $100 to GLC Chaplaincy for each new or used car purchased from Downtown Toyota on presentation of a signed authorisationcertificate at time of delivery. This offer is available to all parents and friends associated with the Gateway Learning Community (GLC).

This offer expires 31 December 2011. Certificates are available from GLC school offices.

GLC chaplains Melissa Gregory andGary Cazzulino also spoke, outliningthe work they are doing as chaplainsin Bulimba and Norman Park SSsand Balmoral SHS. Their enthusiasmand empathy for students was inevidence, especially when studentleaders from these schools addressedthe audience with brief personalstories about how the chaplains hadbeen of support to the m.

Many thanks to the GLC ChaplaincyCommittee for planning the event;to catering coordinator Sara Breckenridge and the

hospitality students from Balmoral SHSfor their professional service; to BulimbaSS for the fabulous job the school did inproviding the setup for a perfect venue forthe morning tea; and finally to administrative, event, ticket and raffle organisers- Danielle, Natalie and Karenfrom Norman Park SS office.

A huge job, brilliantly done.

Federal government funding for Chaplaincyis greatly appreciated but does not pay forall Chaplaincy expenses. Events such asthe High Tea and sponsors like Downtown Toyota enable our committeeto value-add to our Chaplaincy service.

Donations made towards Chaplaincy services in state schools are tax deductible. Please contact any of the three participating schools’ offices to arrange.

With panoramic views across the city and tables adorned with tiered cakes, theMichael Zeuschner Hall at Bulimba SS was the perfect venue for the GLC ChaplaincyMother’s Day High Tea held on 6 May 2011.

175 local mums and a few game gentlemen spent the morning in celebration of Mother’sDay and for the cause of the GLC Chaplaincy Program.

We were privileged to have as guest speaker, Australian sporting legend, KierenPerkins who spoke about children and sport, and his journey up through the ranksof school, club and representative swimming.

Kieren’s inspiring words, gleaned from lessons learnt during his extraordinary career asa swimmer, a husband and father of three children, and now successful business person, emphasised the importance of participation, enjoyment and the valuing of ‘personalbests’. He spoke of how hard work, goal setting and ‘self talk’ made the difference inhis preparation for his Olympic swims and was the factor that enabled him to visualizeand achieve a world record beating performance and Olympic gold in the1500 m Freestyle event at Barcelona in 1992.

Kieren explained that when he wasfaced with the challenge of beatingthe 15 minute mark, he divided up the 30 lap race plan into small, lap by laptimes. Based upon the lap times he was achieving in training Kieren started thinking that this 15 minutegoal, which had seemed impossible up to then, was in fact possible and, as he continued to train with thisthought in mind, was in fact probable!

When Kieren stood on the blocks ready to race he knew he was going to win the race and knew he was going to break the world record. The rest is history.

To achieve this, the seven GLC Principals meet regularly as the‘GLC Governance Group’.

For several years now, the generous provision of Metroplex on Gateway’s corporate boardroom, at their headquarters in Murarrie, hasensured a comfortable off campus venue in which to conduct Governancemeetings.

Many thanks to the Manager of Metroplex on Gateway, Marie Pike, for continuing to welcome GLC Governance meetings in 2011.

10 years of Under 8’s Big Day’s Out has been made possiblebecause of the combined work and support of many, manypeople, businesses and organisations.

Many of them have been involved for the whole ten years orhave joined at some point along the way and become firmlyentrenched as part of the Under 8’s Big Day Out Family! They deserve our thanks.

Firstly, the hugest thanks of all goes to Lynelle Whittaker, themainstay of the event; there from the very beginning, calmly, generously and caringly planning and shaping the event sothat it stayed true to its early childhood goals, where childrenare encouraged to use all their senses to discover, explore andlearn about the wonders of the world around them.

Lynelle is supported by an amazing team of staff, students andparents from Seven Hills SS lead by Principal Michelle Morrissey.

The half way point of the school year is not far away, and plenty has already happened in the Gateway Learning Community(GLC) both to build links across the seven state schools and as a result of established links.

In this edition of the GLC newsletter we celebrate, amongst other things, recent collaborative opportunities including our annualgrand celebration of early childhood for Under 8’s Week-‘Big Day Out’, top quality professional development for GLC staff, and the Mother’s Day High Tea to support GLC Chaplaincy. The success of these events is evidenced in the articles and photos, andindicates a depth of leadership and skills that exist within the various GLC committees who have managed these projects. Thankyou to all who have been involved on every level! But there is little time to dwell on past achievements. As Term 2 unfolds a newset of learning opportunities and challenges are underway for the GLC’s 2600 students and their families. One in particular, theGLC Performance Project- Common Thread- is coming to fruition. Its success depends on the attendance of the wider community as well as GLC students, staff and families. Page 3 has all the details. Tickets at participating school offices or at thedoor at the performances.

We hope you enjoy this issue of the GLC newsletter, so generously sponsored by our business advertisers.

We thank them all for the effort they put in to providing such abeautiful setting each year for the several hundred visitors.

Next come the participating GLC schools. Each school nominateskey staff to assist with planning and stage activities on the dayand send groundsmen to assist set up the infrastructure. Thankyou to all of you! It takes a lot of work and long termplanning to bring it all together on the day, which you do expertly.

The GLC has been privileged to have since 2006 a group of loyalsponsors which support this event both financially and in-kind,coordinated by the indefatigable Deanne Hansom from LJ HookerCannon Hill. There is nothing that Deanne can’t make happenby bringing together the good will of some wonderful local businesses.

It was an amazing sight to see around 700 Prep to Yr 2students from GLC primary schools, all together, having asmuch hands on educational fun as they could fit into one day!

Every little one’s face seemed to be painted; there were seedsand paint and string and wool being wound, glued and daubed;there were children crawling through a black maze andswinging on a bridge made of ropes; AFL and soccer skillswere tried, police sirens triggered and fire hoses aimed. Therewere Old Macdonald’s Farm alpacas and goats to pat, Pet Citycrabs to watch racing, and music being made. From one endof the school grounds to the other, there were activities galore.

This was Under 8’s ‘Big Day Out’, a special annual day forGLC early childhood students at which they could explore, discover, experiment and play to their hearts content.

2011 was the 10th Anniversary of this GLC community event, hosted by Seven Hills SS with their great range of undercover, oval, bush and garden settings in which a whole range ofdifferent activities found perfect spots to set up.

Children from Norman Park SS, Murarrie SS and Bulimba SStravelled by bus from their schools to join their Seven Hills SScompatriots, to be chaperoned around in small groups by

teachers, teacher’s aides and volunteer parents. The groups were free to wander from activity to activity as interest took them, participating in the multitude of activities and games in celebration of early childhood. Special guests from the GLCschools included the Balmoral SHS Yr 11 Early Childhood students as face painters, Balmoral SHS Cheerleaders and Soccer stars and Seven Hills SS Yr 6 and 7 students as crazyclowns.

New this year, and fitting perfectly into the theme of ‘Bush to Beach’, was Nancy Kent’s plant propagation activity. Nancy is aMorningside local who has set up an ‘Inspiration Garden’ at herhome which she opens up for the public. Thankyou Nancy for coming along this year. We hope you get some new visitors to your garden.

Shayne Sutton did a marvellous job in cutting the 10th anniversary cake, thankyou Shayne, followed by a beautiful performance of the Seven Hills SS Yrs 3/4 choir.

2011 will be remembered as a wonderful anniversary year, a fitting celebration for this fabulous early childhood community event.
