That was the month that was...an update from the Principal’s Blog

A lot has happened over the last few weeks. Sorry if the blog has been less regular than usual.

Importantly the Colleges Scotland board have agreed to set up an Employers' Association, of which we will be a member, with full delegated authority to conduct the management side of national bargaining. The need for this key corporate governance change was again emphasised by the most recent section 22 reports on colleges published by the Auditor General this week. The Board welcomes the restoration of national collective bargaining as it was a key priority.

Equally important, a settlement to the national pay dispute for lecturing sta has been agreed and when EIS/Fela comply with that organisation's governance requirements it will be accepted.

At the last Board meeting members considered a number of mid-year reports including progress against the ES Action Plan, the budget position and compliance with regulatory requirements. Members also welcomed the eorts of sta which had improved the PI data set for the previous year. The motion of no condence in the Board and management team was also considered and the Chair has written to all sta on this matter. Margaret Cook, GCRB Chair, attended the meeting and provided an overview of her key priorities. Members also thanked Frances for her valued contribution to the work of the board. The papers for the meeting are available on the College website.

There have been a number of exciting events involving learners over the last few weeks. Lecturer Kevin Dobie

has been in Warsaw with a group on an Erasmus exchange visit while artist Alastair Banks has had an exhibition in West and conducted a ne art live event in the East End campus. Our college has also been nominated in the College of the Year category at the Scotland on Stage Awards.

Audrey and I met with the acting CEO of College Development Network Candy Munro to discuss how that organisation can provide appropriate sta development. We raised a number of matters and are waiting for Candy to get back to us.

At the most recent North East Senior Ocers Group there was considerable discussion on the implementation of the Community Empowerment Act and how it would impact on all public bodies such as the College. This piece of legislation will become increasing important as to how we work within Community Planning Partnership structures from now on.

We are still waiting the formal feedback from the two year merger review exercise conducted by SFC. Once the report is provided to the College I will make it available to you.

It was our nal sponsor's game with the Rocks last Friday which ended in a nail biting win in the nal seconds. Tickets are available for the match this weekend if you hurry.

I trust you enjoyed your long weekend and hope you found time to relax.

A trail-blazing course, developed by Thenue Housing Association and Glasgow Kelvin College to help the unemployed learn new skills and improve their job prospects, has celebrated another milestone.

Another group of long-term unemployed people from the east end of Glasgow this week completed their studies in what is the 13th time the course has run.

And they gave the pioneering project an overwhelming thumbs up as they marked their achievement at a “Celebration of Learning” event at the Calton Heritage and Learning Centre..

The award winning “Learning Works” initiative is a joint project between Thenue Housing and the College.

The free course is aimed at unemployed people in the area of the east end served by the regeneration agency Clyde Gateway and includes computer skills, health and wellbeing, personal development, communications, numeracy and literacy.

One of the former participants Clare Parkes, 34, from Calton, took part in the initiative in March 2014. Now in part-time work, she is returning to university in September to study community development. She said: “When I joined I was a single mum and didn’t feel like I was going anywhere. However, Learning Works gave me a real push and helped broaden my horizons. It also got me started in a lot of local volunteering, which enabled me to help other people with my skills.”

“Working together with Thenue Housing and Glasgow Kelvin College, we have built up an informative course over the last ve years which has gone a long way in supporting the learning requirements of those living within the Clyde Gateway area. We wish all those who took part in the course the very best of luck in their continued job search and hope that they found this latest session useful.”

Craig Green, Head of Community and Information Services at Glasgow Kelvin College, said: “We are delighted to once again help recognise the achievements of the students on this hugely worthwhile programme. The success of the ‘Learning Works’ groups underscores the value of partnership working and we are privileged to be part of this.

“The crucial role of community

–based learning in addressing access problems is highlighted by the continuing success of the programme and congratulations go to all the learners who are here this evening, as well as to the sta who have supported them on their journey. Our thanks go out to Thenue Housing Association for their continued trust and condence and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the future.”

Glasgow Kelvin College were the main sponsors for Friday night’s Rocks game against Leeds Force.

More than 270 sta and students claimed their free tickets to see the Rocks clinch victory in the last minute, making it three out of three Rocks wins with GKC as main sponsor.

Glasgow Rocks outlasted Leeds 75-74 after a spirited comeback from the Force late in the 4th

quarter. For the Rocks, Will Hall led the way with 20 points against his former team, with Riley Grabau and Jonny Bunyan chipping in on the oensive end. But it was that man again, Kieron Achara, who delivered a fantastic 2 point jump shot in the nal seconds to give the Rocks the win.

David Robertson had the honour of presenting the British Basketball League’s Player of the

Month award to Kieron before the tip-o.

As one of the main sponsors, the College has the opportunity to enter a team in the Rocks’ 2016 Sponsors Basketball Tournament being held at the Emirates Arena on Sunday 17th April; billed as a ‘fun event’. If any member of sta wishes to take part, or knows any students that would like to play, please contact David Robertson.

A New Delegation from India

GKC hosted a delegation from India with a specic interest in learner support and opportunities for people who are disabled. This is now a key strand of Indian government policy. Through the UKIERI programme, our supported learning colleagues and the business development unit are now working with the main agency and with a number of major Indian employers, taking responsibility for training provision directed at people with disabilities.

Our colleagues from supported learning, co-ordinated by Irene Quinn and Marlyn Barr, had a week long programme of sharing knowledge and experiences with our Indian partners which included visits to external partners. On Thursday 4th Feb, the group met with Humza Yousaf MSP, Minister for External Aairs and International Development at Scottish Parliament and with a group of Scottish Government ocials who were keen to discuss supported learning with the college and our Indian partners.

On Thursday the 28th of January 1st and 2nd year Events students enjoyed an opportunity to hear from guest speaker Maggie Barry (pictured above) about Press Release. Maggie, an award winning journalist, has covered Scottish stories from all over the globe. Now the Motoring Editor at Media Scotland (Daily Record, Sunday Mail, Glaswegian and regionals), Maggie was able to oer a valuable insight into the world of media.

Students found the session very helpful as Debbie, a 2nd year Events Management student, describes…

I found the talk from Maggie Barry, Journalist, Daily Record very benecial and rewarding and gained information that will assist me with my outcomes for PR, 2nd year HND. It really helps having someone in the industry coming in to speak with us as it provides real life knowledge from an industry expert.

A successful application to Glasgow City Council Education Services for the sum of £5000 was made by GKC Automotive Department to invest in an EXOCET Kit Car for Glasgow Schools Groups.

Young people attending the college will build and assemble a vehicle that can be stripped and rebuilt every year. It can then be painted in the Schools and College colours.

This is an exciting opportunity for the Schools Automotive Group for active learning in a creative and work related context. Future plans include building a car that is road legal!

Skills, Learning, Life and Work Level 1 students presenting a cheque for £50 to Anne Taylor at the Craighalbert centre. A big thanks to all who supported this achievement

First year Civil Engineering students were out in force in Glasgow city centre in March, taking part in a fund-raising exercise as part of their studies.

Over 3 days 46 students and sta were involved in carrying out a 'level transfer', which to the non-engineers, amounts to working out the dierence in height between one point and another.

In this case, we asked them to do this exercise at 10am on Buchanan Street, working from St. Enoch's underground station to the foot of the Donald Dewar statue at the top of the hill.

The students were being sponsored by friends

and family to take part in the event and the Civil Engineering team were very happy with the turnout (and the weather staying dry!). The team who comes up with most accurate answer (still being calculated) will also win a prize of courtside tickets to see a Glasgow Rocks basketball match.

The students were raising funds for a residential workshop taking place in May. The students will be the rst civil engineering students to take part in this type of activity, which will be a 3-day course comprising practical assessments and team-building tasks at Auchengillan Outdoor Centre.

Punjab and Glasgow Kelvin College Exchange Engineering Skills

Glasgow Kelvin College Engineering students and sta travelled to India in February to visit Ludhiana Polytechnic College, Punjab as part of a UKIERI-funded skills and knowledge exchange programme.

Both colleges are discussing how best to accredit Ludhiana’s mechanical engineering qualications under the Scottish Qualications Authority, with a view to developing and delivering these and other SQA qualications up to advanced technical level, in line with the Indian education system.

The group’s visit took them to local factories and employers, as well as delivering and attending engineering classes at the Polytechnic. Peter Brown, Engineering Lecturer at Kelvin, delivered two lectures and was delighted to be introduced to the Ludhiana students’ current ‘design & build’ project - a car which turns on its own axis.

Glasgow’s three colleges are blazing a trail in the delivery of the new Foundation Apprenticeship frameworks created by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and supported by the European Social Fund.

The planned programme will give young people in central Scotland the opportunity to learn practical workplace skills while they are still attending school, and build their condence levels. Employers can then be assured that their young apprentices will be experienced and qualied in the skills they need for a strong and resilient workforce.

For the rst time in Glasgow, a single, regional bid was approved by SDS on behalf of the three Glasgow colleges – Glasgow Kelvin College, Glasgow Clyde College and City of Glasgow College - to develop and deliver this ambitious programme.

Margaret Cook, Chair of the

Glasgow Colleges’ Regional Board, said, “This joint work demonstrates the existing close-collaboration between the Glasgow colleges and the potential for further development in other areas to benet students and employers”.

The bid, which was co-ordinated by the three colleges, will ensure that the new frameworks are delivered consistently across Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire local authority areas.

This initiative will give school pupils in S5 the opportunity to gain apprenticeships in Civil Engineering; Engineering; Financial Services; Care and Young People and IT delivered by the Glasgow colleges. It oers young people the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship-based learning journey whilst still at school, running alongside their S5 subject choices. Ultimately, the programme will be a launchpad

for young people to achieve their career goals and, with the valued input of local employers, will help to create a skilled and qualied workforce for the future.

Graeme Hendry, Foundation Apprenticeships Regional Manager for the West Region of Skills Development Scotland said: “SDS is delighted to be working with the three Glasgow Colleges to deliver Foundation Apprenticeships. The knowledge, skills and experience the young people will gain will give them a head start in their career and equip them with the skills that employers are looking for.”

The programme will be launched ocially in the late spring of 2016. Working closely with schools, local authorities and employers, the colleges have designed a framework and outcomes which will be ready for young people starting in August of this year.

Two of Glasgow Kelvin College’s talented HN Music students are gracing our TV screens these days.

On BBC 1’s The Voice UK, former HND Music student Laura Begley came through the ‘blind auditions’ to snatch a well-deserved place on Team Boy George with her amazing rendition of The Smiths’ ‘Ask’. A truly original performance of a well-loved classic – judge for yourself! https://youtu.be/7GgrtxLixXo

Laura, from Stirling, left college last year and is now developing her unique talent, studying and gigging down south. She is grasping the opportunity with both hands and says, “Bring on the Battles!”

A great support to her classmates, Laura was a class rep during her time at GKC. Former tutor, Pete Darnborough, is full of praise for her. He says, “"Laura always demonstrates a professional and original approach to her music. She was a hard working student with a unique talent and incredible drive so she's likely to take full advantage of this opportunity and make the very most of it. We’re all right behind her here at Glasgow Kelvin College."

Unfortunately Laura didn’t make the nals, however, the experience and exposure will no doubt foster a successful career in the music industry. Glasgow Kelvin is rooting for her on her exciting journey.

And, not to be outdone.Another former student Donna McDade continues her singing career after Glasgow Kelvin. The footage available on youtube shows Donna and Michael Lawson sing the Guns N' Roses track "Patience" at the Battles on The Voice of Ireland.https://youtu.be/E-ozrhbDn4E

Cabinet Secretary for Education & Lifelong Learning, Angela Constance presented Community Achievement Awards to thirteen community volunteers in recognition of their work in supporting others in their local community. The Awards were handed out on 25th February at a ceremony in Oasis at Wallacewell, a church-based community project in the North of Glasgow.

Glasgow Kelvin College’s Community Achievement Awards support volunteers to plan and evaluate their contribution and involvement in community activities, providing them with a recognised qualication and helping them progress to further learning or into employment.

The College has worked in partnership with over 40 community organisations in some of Glasgow’s most deprived communities to support some 250 volunteers, many of whom had no previous qualications, in achieving the award so far. These awards also encourage people to overcome the condence barrier faced when returning to learning and, for many, they provide a springboard to help them move on in their lives.

Organisations which deal with youthwork, health information, homelessness, addiction issues and other challenges have benetted from the Community Achievement Awards through witnessing their service users’ success and progression.

The thirteen successful learners from organisations across the city – The Marie Trust, Blue Triangle Housing Association, Oasis at Wallacewell, Flourish House, Lodging House Mission, Maryhill Hub, Glasgow Homelessness Network, Sunday Social and North East Recovery Day (NERD) - were delighted to receive their awards from the Cabinet Secretary.

18 students from HND Accounting, attended the ACCA/BDO Budget Breakfast at the exclusive ‘29’ in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, in the company of around 120 members of the Glasgow Finance and business community – for the eighth successive year. The presentation started at 8am, which though ‘taxing’ the brains of the students at that early hour with some signicant changes to both the Scottish and UK tax codes, was somewhat helped by a substantial and quality breakfast at the event. One of the Partners who John Murphy previously worked for at PKF/BDO, Frank Paterson, is at the back right of the photograph. Frank is a partner of Corporate Advisory Services in Scotland. His wealth of experience and client portfolio in this eld covers care homes, leisure and the manufacturing and construction industries. In addition to advising on acquisitions and disposal of businesses, Frank has a wealth of experience in company renancing. Frank is also greatly committed to his role in the Princes Trust, Youth Business Scotland for which he is the Lanarkshire Regional Chair. Before merging with BDO in 2013, Frank was a partner in PKF for 30 years.

This has been a stimulating and worthwhile experience for students who gather rst-hand knowledge of the Finance & Accounting industry as they are able to network with some of the key personnel in the business community.

Well done to John for once again encouraging his students to share this experience.

Budget Breakfast SCQF Sharing Good Practice: Working in Partnership

Friday 11th March saw Marie Woods, Kevin Dobie and Andy Allan present at a SCQF Working in Partnership - Sharing Best Practice event in Glasgow.

The work under discussion forms part of a Pan-European music based project: Musicreates. Our partners are Colleges in Derry, Kajanni and Kokkola in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia: we also have a Work Life partner Connect-IN Enterprises based in Glasgow.

The project, aims to:• Be deliverable on any pan-European learner exchange project• Enhance vocational education and professional skills of participants • Improve understanding/serving of cultural needs in a Europe wide context• Improve employability on a European level

The project is based on the ECVET ethos of giving learners credit for work done regardless of location/assessor aliation (within the EU). A condition of the current funding includes the development, delivery and evaluation of ‘tool’ to deliver this.

We settled on an SCQF rated activity to best full this as their rating system is already integrated with the European framework. The resultant unit: ‘Industry experience whilst abroad’ and its development is the subject of Friday’s presentation.

People living in Castlemilk can now access a state-of-the-art digital learning centre providing free internet and computer access at their local library.

The computer learning centre at Castlemilk Library is the rst ‘Click & Connect’ centre to be opened in one of the city’s libraries.

The new ‘Click & Connect’ Centre is the rst of its kind to be delivered in partnership between GHA, its parent company Wheatley Group, Glasgow Life and Glasgow Kelvin College to provide free internet access in Glasgow communities.

The new facility was ocially opened by Lord Provost Sadie Docherty on 23rd March.

The centre, which includes 14 PCs, provides support from tutors from the College and the Library to help people get online and learn new skills.

With more vital services going online, lack of access and understanding of technology can create huge divides across our city. Using the library’s position at the heart of the community the Click and Connect Centre hopes to create more opportunities for citizens to engage with computers and technology, regardless of their age or ability.

People can get advice on how to access job sites, create a CV, get online shopping discounts, keep up to date with welfare reform changes, ll in online forms and use GHA’s new online services.

The Wheatley Group and Glasgow Kelvin College have previously worked together to launch Click and Connect centres across Glasgow. This new centre, the 30th to be opened across Scotland, and the rst in partnership with Glasgow Life provides free computer facilities and digital classes in communities which experience some of the highest levels of deprivation in Scotland.

The Click & Connect centre at Castlemilk Library is available to current and new Library users.

If you’d like to nd out more about Click and Connect at Castlemilk Library, or would like to learn more about computer facilities in Glasgow’s 33 libraries, please visit: www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries

On Friday 3rd March rst year Musical Theatre students performed a variety of songs and dance at Deaf Connections in Glasgow to an invited audience of family and friends.

This was a “Work In Progress” show put together by students. The show raised £240 for the Deaf Connections charity.

2nd Year Professional Cookery students had an interesting talk from ‘The Vegetarianism for Life’ society who represent older Vegetarian and Vegan people in the community, care homes, hospital etc.. to maintain their right to the diet and lifestyle that they choose.

Many chefs/carers in the industry do not fully understand how important it is to provide the correct food, use correct cleaning materials and toiletries to ensure that the beliefs of individuals are respected and upheld. One example was of a dementia patient who was Vegan being given cows’ milk in her tea.

GKC Musical Theatre and Dance students performed at the at the Radisson Hotel, Glasgow this month for the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting national conference. The groups were booked to perform by a former Musical Theatre student, now a business support manager who knew she could depend on GKC sta and students to come up with a spectacular show. The students received amazing feedback on their performance, with many of the senior managers in the organisation commenting that they had never seen such energy and liveliness at a conference.Attendees recognised the talent and commented on the hard work that was put into the outstanding performance. A donation of £500 was made to Musical Theatre and Dance at Kelvin College.

I spent two and a half days working in the Ecole Hoteliere Lausanne. It was a great experience working with the chefs and students and sharing ideas with the course facilitators. It was encouraging to see them use similar standards and teaching practice; although I still think we are a bit more sophisticated in our practice, and that a lot of the equipment they use in their kitchen is exactly the same as we use to train our students.

I went to a meeting with the Course Dean and he presented a Power Point explaining the way that the ‘Practical Arts’ are delivered and the problems that they encounter with their students ; they have a few Prince’s and a large percentage of the students are from families that are millionaires even billionaires that own Hotel Chains or large companies and are used to having servants: the students have never cooked in their life and are now expected to peel carrots, clean rooms,

serve food etc. They encounter a few attitude problems … I have taken a lot from it and have come back with lots of photographs to show our students and let them understand that no matter where or who you are standards have to be maintained and rules have to be respected.
