Commentary

Welcome to the GivX 2018 Report

Since our inaugural year in 2017, we’ve seen an explosion of support for GivX as CR professionals recognise the power of a simple, universal framework for valuing what they give and benchmarking amongst their peers. That explosion is reflected in the two figures below: something that everyone involved can feel really proud of.

The increase in participation this year has allowed us to cross a significant threshold and now provide you with benchmarking data to reflect your company size and sector. This breakthrough will furnish you with some powerful metrics for managing, promoting and protecting your community investment programme.

These insights come entirely as the result of each of your contributions. So regardless of your GivX score, thank you so much for taking part.

Our particular thanks go to Heart of the City, whose whole-hearted support from the outset has meant we’ve been able to launch an SME award this year, and to the Bank of England for hosting the event.

We feel this year that GivX has been proven as a concept; and to a point, our work in devising the idea is now done. The more people who take part, the more valuable the tool will be for the CR profession, so the future of the project is very much in your hands!

We talk more at the end of the report about where we’d like to take GivX next, but the mission is simple: if you find the tool useful, get out among your peers and inspire them to take part too.

GivX’s value is directly proportional to the number of people taking part: your collective contribution is making something of real value to the profession.

Commentary

Meet the median

What is your eye drawn to when you look at the graph below? When you open the GivX report, what numbers do you first flick through?

Without a doubt, the most appealing insights are the top of the curve and the big numbers! We’re all fascinated by the huge donations and the top scorers.

The line graph below shows the distribution of cash giving across this year’s 87 GivX entrants. That steep curve on the right? That’s made up by just four entrants, who’ve given over 80% of the total.

GivX inputs are anonymous, so we can’t reveal the sum; but believe us, it’s a lot! And of course, deserves significant recognition.

But looking at these numbers in relation to your own CR programme is not that useful. It’s the equivalent of looking at the $4.6 billion that Bill Gates has personally given away and feeling a bit inadequate about your monthly charity direct debit. We – whether individuals or companies – need to frame our giving in terms of our size, our strength, and where we can give most effectively and with the most impact.

The Power of the Median

Taking size and sector into account, throughout the analysis of the GivX data, we’ve decided to focus on the median scores as a method to reduce the skewing impact of extreme outliers and paint a more useful and illustrative picture of what UK companies are giving.

In this section we’ve included some of the most interesting insights from looking at the median scores from this year’s data set.

What does this data tell us?

Sector VariationThe pie-charts to the left show the variation in giving between the four sectors with enough entrants to provide a benchmark. The table overleaf (Sector) shows percentage difference (how much up or down) they are on the median performance. What we can see from these numbers is that there’s considerable variation between industries.

Commentary

The different distribution of giving shown in the pie charts reaffirms of one of the key messages from GivX 2017: do what you’re good at.

Law and Media are sectors that have tapped into ways of giving that align closely with their business models to provide something of high value to the community. In the case of law this is pro bono, and in media, advertising space across print, digital and television.

But big numbers are not necessarily good benchmarks for you. The Bill Gates rule applies here too, and you need to be looking at what you have the potential to give, and at what leaders in your sector are doing to maximise how you can use your skills and resources.

The second table below (Company Size) shows considerable variation between company sizes. There are three important things to pull out here.

1: Micro BusinessWe only had four micro businesses take part this year and their extraordinary median score obviously deserves some recognition. Whilst we don’t yet have a formal award for this category, we want to make a special mention of two companies WHYPAY?, who second their people to a sister-charity Wonderful, and Obelisk Support, who have made a substantial commitment to volunteering.

They are a clear demonstration of organisations who are putting social purpose firmly at the core of their business.

2: SMEsOur micro businesses demonstrate that when a small company makes a commitment to the community, they can make a huge contribution, so it’s surprising that SMEs (11-250) aren’t giving more.

In contrast to companies between 251 and 1000, we would hypothesise that SMEs are newer to CR and are less likely to have a dedicated practitioner at the helm.

It’s also possible they’re less well served by third party providers and charity partners.

There’s huge potential here – so more power to the elbow of organisations like Heart of the City and the Manchester Responsible Business Collective.

3: Big BusinessBusinesses with huge, often dispersed workforces are clearly struggling to punch at their weight. With the current data-set we can only hypothesise as to why this is. Location and distribution of workforce are almost certainly factors: coordinating community investment activities for a single office is logistically simpler than reaching people who work remotely, on shift, or in small regional teams. Another question is whether big companies are dedicating a proportional amount of resources to their CR teams.

From our own experience at Benefacto there are clear challenges to scaling volunteering programmes at the national level, and the

same can be said in relation to in-kind donations and fundraising. Perhaps more resources are needed in larger businesses. Interestingly, the performance of big businesses shows a parallel with the giving habits of wealthy individuals. As a recent article in the FT reports: “those with £1m-£10m in investable assets [give] just £500 a year. Among the ultra wealthy — those with more than £10m — it is just £240”. Deepening the SurveyIn the interest of providing you with more insight into why performance varies between different company types, we’re thinking about adding some simple survey questions to GivX next year.

Surveying areas like CR team size, the existence of formal policies such as volunteering leave, leadership and champions networks would help us to shine more light on the strategies that yield positive results. See the ‘What Next’ section to see how you can help us to shape these developments.

Top Ten Tips on using your 2018 GivX Numbers

Some useful pointers on how to put your GivX numbers to work from Rob Powell, Head of Pro Bono & CSR at Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP.

1) Crunch your numbers and take advantage of the nine different benchmarking filters by logging in to your GivX account Head to benefacto.org/access to start benchmarking

2) Celebrate your results with colleaguesPut your award certificate somewhere visible and use the GivX Award Winner materials to shout about your achievement

3) Talk to your CR committee and wider team about the reportTake some screen shots of key benchmarks to highlight strengths and weaknesses

As in 2017, one of the key themes from the GivX submission process this year was the number of companies unable to take part in benchmarking because they’re simply not recording their community investment activities.

Whilst challenges do vary between different companies, broadly there are two main focal points: people (getting your colleagues to tell you what’s going on) and tech (finding a simple, time-effective way to store, record and analyse your data).

Following GivX 2017 we’ve developed some tools that you’ll find useful for making reporting simpler and quicker.

DataHub In response to the challenges around data collection, we’ve developed our services to include a one-stop-shop for you to record and report all of your giving data. Based around the six GivX data-points, DataHub is an intuitive place to store your data and provides beautiful visualisations, and customisable forms to support your employees to log their activities independently.

To give it a go simply log in to the Benefacto platform at benefacto.org/access with your GivX credentials. You can select a trial under the ‘settings’ tab. Alternatively, talk to one of Team Benefacto to find out more.

What Next? Title

GivX 2019?Don’t worry if you didn’t take part in GivX this year, we’ll be running the benchmark again in 2019.

The submission period will run from Monday 1 April to Friday 28 June. If you’d like to sign up for a reminder, register your interest at https://benefacto.org/register-givx/.

Taking part is simple. To enter GivX you submit your cash or hourly totals for six data points:

We use this data to calculate your total GivX score and your GivX score per employee. We calculate using an approach called ‘Community Value’, which is based on a standardised replacement cost to the community.

Your inputs are always kept anonymous. If you win a prestigious GivX 25 award (for companies >250) or SME 10 award we’ll publish your GivX scores. If not, your GivX scores are kept for your use only.

Everyone who contributes to the dataset has access to the invaluable benchmarking tools and is invited to join their peers for the annual GivX summit.

GivX 2019 Steering group

GivX’s growth this year has given us a clear hint of framework’s potential.As we enter its third year we feel it will be vital to draw on the guidance of the CR profession to steer the future development of the project.

We’d like some help to discuss questions such as whether we add some more qualitative survey questions to the submissions process, how we maintain accountability across the entry and how we can continue to grow the number of firms represented in the benchmark.

Our aim is to bring together a steering group of between six and eight CR professionals from a range of industries for two or three discussions before the opening of submissions in 2019. As well as providing guidance, we would also expect steering group members to actively campaign amongst their peers for their participation. Want to see a benchmark for your sector? You can make it happen! The future of GivX is entirely in the hands of the CR profession so if you want to see your sector better represented, let us know.

This year we had sector benchmarking for Law, Financial Services, Professional & Technology Services and Media & Communications. It would add a lot of value to add to this cohort and even to drill down further within specific sectors.
