can be used over
a two-week
period
Teaching and encouraging children to be thankful for
everyday things is an important and vital part of their
social development. Saying ‘thank you’ purely out
of habit is very diff erent to developing an a tude of
thankfulness. Encouraging children to be thankful in
a variety of ways and se ngs will help a child with
their social interac on skills and, hopefully, create an
a tude they will take into adulthood. The aim of this
material is to help the children develop a posi ve and
genuine a tude to giving thanks. We also want them
to think about being thankful towards God for all that
he gives and provides for us.
Throughout these sessions, ensure that you are
encouraging everyone—adults as well as the chil-
dren—to be saying ‘thank you’ as much as possible.
Acknowledge all that happens during the sessions, for
example, being thankful for the author of the books
you read, the people who help with the music, your
corps offi cers etc. It would be great if you can work
towards crea ng a real atmosphere of thankfulness
within these sessions. Below is some scripture that
you might like to use or include at diff erent mes
throughout your sessions:
Introduction
• Always use the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to thank God the Father for everything. (Ephesians 5:20)
• Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
• Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good. His faithful love con nues forever. (Psalm 107:1)
• Whatever you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks to God the Father because of him. (Colossians 3:17)
Thank you cards: Provide some bright coloured cardboard, textas or crayons, glue, s ckers, feathers, pom poms, foil, stamps, other cra materials etc. for the children to use to create a card to give to a friend whom they are thankful for, love or care about.
Playdough: Using some brightly coloured playdough, encourage the children to make something they are thankful for or something that they love to look at or use or eat etc. You may like to chat with the children and make some sugges ons about what this might be, e.g. fl owers, birds, rainbows, the sunshine, family, pizza, ice-cream etc.
Decora ng: You might like to get a variety of cra resources and some empty plas c photo frames for
the children to decorate as a gi for someone they are thankful for, or you could provide plas c plates for the
children to decorate.
Memory game: For this memory game you will need to create 10 sets of hand shapes. On 10 of the hand shapes
you will need to write ‘Thank you God for…’ and on the other 10 hand shapes you can paste some pictures of
animals, houses, a family, dogs, forest etc.(some things you think the children will love and be thankful for).
The hand shapes will need to be placed face down on a table or space provided on the mat. Instruct the children to turn over two hand shapes at a me un l they get a ‘Thank you God for…’ hand and a picture of an object hand.
‘I am thankful for…’ collage: For this ac vity you will need a large sheet of butchers paper or similar and a pile of pages pulled out of appropriate magazines. The pages you will be looking for will include a range of things that the children will love and be thankful for. You will also need some scissors and paste. Assist the children where necessary in cu ng out their chosen picture and adding it to the paper to make a huge ‘thank you’ collage. You might like to paint the words ‘THANK YOU’ in the middle of the sheet before the children start. Once this has been completed, hang it up in the room so that over the coming weeks it acts as a reminder to the children—you can also refer back to it during your mat mes together.
Drama c play area: For this area you might like to set up a home environment where there will be items that can be used to help or serve each other, e.g. table, plates, cups, brooms, brush and shovel, gardening tools etc. You might also like to set up a shop environment or cafe environment where people can serve and help each other. As the leader or adult in this area, you can help the children think about who they might be saying thank you to in this area and why.
‘Thank you’ freeze: For this game you will need some music to play. Encourage the children to dance around to the music and when it stops the leader will call out, ‘I am thankful for… (an animal, someone in my family, yummy food, water to drink, all the books I can read etc.)’ When the leader calls this out, the children will be encouraged to freeze in a pose that shows what is called out.
Looking through the window, what do I see… : For this ac vity you will need an empty frame with the back taken off it so that it looks like a window you are looking through. Have the group si ng in a circle and say together ‘Looking through the window what do I see…’ and then ask the children what they might see, and respond together, ‘I see a brown dog looking at me’. Before moving on to the next thing you might see check with the children if a brown dog is something they could be thankful for. You will probably have some who say yes and some who say no, this is fi ne as it shows it is okay to be thankful for diff erent things.
Merci: There may be some children within your group who come from other na onali es and possibly speak diff erent languages. You could encourage these children and parents to teach the other children how to say ‘thank you’ in another language. Children then could surprise friends and family by saying thank you in a whole new way. If you have no other na onali es within your group here are some other languages that you might like to teach your children.

Thank you, God, for loving me (Li le Hermie): Li le Hermie is a caterpillar who plays with ladybugs, bumblebees, and moths. Together they show apprecia on for God’s love, protec on, and ar s c crea vity. They pray words of thanksgiving in all they do. I wonder what your prayers would include.
Did you ever say thank you?: Saying ‘thank you’ is such a li le thing to do, but a big thing to learn to do. And, why would a child want to do it? Well, it makes everybody and everything feel be er, especially the child. How many people or things can a child be thankful for today or tonight? This book sets in mo on the idea that there are blessings everywhere and it might just be a good idea to no ce them. I wonder what you have no ced and are thankful for around you.
Curious George says thank you: George is thrilled to get a thank you card in the mail from his friend Betsy. It makes him want to send thank you cards to everyone he knows. Who can he thank? George tries to remember all the people who have been nice to him, but tracking them down to deliver his homemade cards soon becomes a challenge. I wonder who you would send a thank you card to and why.
My Big Book of Thank You’s (Count your blessings 1,2,3): This deligh ul book lets children count their blessings. Everything from food to family to the stars in the sky is a blessing and can be counted. The last spread is a wipe off page and a dry-erase pen is provided so that children can record the things for which they are grateful for themselves. I wonder what we should add to the book today.
The Thank You Prayer: This book will help you and your child start to explore all the things around you that you can thank God for. I wonder what you will be thankful for today.

Handprint thank you pictures: Provide some paint on plas c plates that the children can use to dip their hands in and make prints on provided paper. You will also need some wet ones or a tub of soapy water for the children to wash their hands. Explain to the children that God created many fabulous creatures for our fun and enjoyment; ask them which ones they love and are thankful to God for. Encourage them to choose an animal and help them to add some extra detail to their handprint with textas and google eyes. There are plenty of images of these types of handprint animals (peacock, crab, owl, octopus, camel, lion, elephant etc.) that you will fi nd on an internet search. You might like to create some of your own before the ac vity to help the children with some ideas.
Thank you God book: Create a ‘Thank you God’ book—you will need an empty display book that includes plas c pockets, some blank A4 sheets of paper, pencils, textas or crayons. Encourage each child to draw a picture of something they want to thank God for. When they are fi nished ask them about their picture and write a descrip on that starts with ‘… (child’s name) is thankful to God for …. because…’. Collate the pages into the plas c pockets and use this book during the Prayer Spot with the children.
There are a range of books that help us to explore the topic of giving thanks in many diff erent situa ons. Below are some sugges ons of books that you might like to use over the two weeks or have available for a reading corner or for borrowing.
The Blessing Jar – A Story about Being Thankful: Alexa Grace is having a bad day, but then Grandma arrives with something special for ‘Grandma’s li le punky Grace’—an Ebenezer jar that she thinks is very peculiar. Grandma explains that an Ebenezer is a ‘stone of help’ and represents God’s blessings. Alexa Grace wonders if she can fi ll the jar with some of God’s blessings. She goes on the hunt with her furry Newfoundland puppy and Grandma, and Alexa Grace’s new blessing jar soon overfl ows with God’s wonders. ‘The Blessing Jar’ celebrates the bond between grandparents and grandchildren and teaches li le ones an important lesson about recognizing even the smallest of God’s blessings and being thankful for them all. I wonder what you would fi ll a blessings jar with.

Object Lesson: For this story you will need eleven teddy bears to help you tell the story and you will need some addi onal adults to help. You will need to wrap 10 of the teddy bears up in bandages to show that they are sick. Have one teddy bear that will portray Jesus. Have your volunteer adults to help by making the other teddy bears act out the story while you are telling it. You will need to allocate one of the teddys to be the one that will return to thank Jesus for healing him.
‘Today we are going to use these bears to help us look at a story about Jesus that you will fi nd in the Bible. It shows us how Jesus was helping some sick people get be er.
‘There were 10 people who were very sick. They were very sick and sad and badly wanted to get be er. One day they saw Jesus. They had heard that Jesus was someone who could heal you when you were sick, so they all asked Jesus to make them be er.(Have the adults act out this with the bears.)
‘Jesus asked them to go and see a priest; a priest is a leader of a church. So they all went on their way to visit the leader of the church and on the way they were healed. Jesus had made them be er. (Take off all the bandages from the bears to show that they were be er.)
‘Could you imagine how happy they would have felt when Jesus made them be er? I wonder how you feel when you are sick and then start to feel be er.
‘Well, when one, just one, of the people saw what had happened, they stopped, turned around and went running back to Jesus to say thank you.
‘I wonder what you think the other nine people did. (Allow the children to spend some me responding.)
‘Well, you know what, they did not come back. They didn’t come back and say thank you to Jesus. Only one, yep, just one of them came back to say thank you to Jesus.’
‘Jesus had made all of them be er but only one said thank you.(Show a sad face.)
‘I wonder how that makes you feel. Do you think the others should have come back and said thank you to Jesus? (Spend some me discussing what the children think.)
‘The Bible reminds us that we need to say thank you to those who help us, provide for us and love us. It is important that we stop and say thank you to our friends and family for helping us, just like when Jesus helped the sick people. It is also important to stop and thank God for making us, loving us and always being our friend.’

Group prayer book: Have the children sit in a circle where they can all see you and the book they have created in the ‘Crea ng Spot’. Go through each page and share what each child is thankful to God for, and thank God for them too.
The Thank You Prayer book: Read The Thank You Prayer together. You may wish to use the PowerPoint DVD if you have it. At the fi nal page, ask the children if there is something they are thankful for and allow them to respond.

Thank you: When you are out walking this week, take a look around at some of the things that you are thankful for: the park that you get to play in; the shop where you can buy an ice-cream; or the fi re sta on where the fi re-fi ghters and trucks stay ready to help keep people safe from fi res etc. As a family think about someone in the community that you might like to say thank you to. You might like to make a card together, some yummy biscuits or a cake, or purchase a box of chocolates to take them and show your apprecia on.
