GISBURN SCHOOL PUPILS FOLLOW THE MAP TO SUCCESS! A group of Yr 6 children became Lancashire’s orienteering champions when they represented The Ribble Valley at Lancashire Youth Games in Blackpool last week. The team joined the yellow army of Ribble Valley competitors in a procession with over 2000 children from other Lancashire boroughs before an enjoyable opening ceremony which included Blackpool circus performers. The competition was held in Stanley Park and the orienteerers worked in pairs to follow their map and locate twenty control boxes hidden around the grounds in a time limit of 45 minutes. The children did extremely well and, with their combined scores, the Gisburn team won over all and Lucy Pilkington and Hayden Atkinson came first out of thirty other pairs of children. In the afternoon, the children had time to play on the fantastic playground and have a go at rock climbing as well as watching some of the athletics competitions before receiving their trophy and medals in the awards ceremony.

YRS 5 & 6 ATHLETICS

On Friday, 12th July the Yrs 5 & 6 Athletics team competed against 10 other Ribble Valley primary schools and took 2nd place! Well done to Sean Bargh, Chris Moore, Hayden Atkinson, Jack Watterson, Aimee Carroll, Lucy Pilkington, Claudia Humberstone and Tiffany Skinner.

Be Seen in Green Day 2013 –

In Support of Manchester Children’s Hospital

On Friday, 5th July pupils and staff wore non-uniform with something green to school for the day and paid a donation of just £1 to take part. By wearing green, we were donning the colours of the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital charity for the day! A fantastic £93 was raised!

THIS TERM, IN CLASS…

Robins have thoroughly enjoyed learning about different types of habitats, and animal & plant environments. They have also been learning about religions and on Wednesday, 26th June they went on foot to look around St. Mary’s Church and investigate its artefacts. They had a great time exploring the various aspects of the building. Thank you to Mrs. Jenny Gornall (church warden) for showing everyone around.

Owls have been learning science and topic work on rainforests; learning where these are situated in the world and what the weather is like there. They have created a classroom display, showing the four different layers of trees and plants in the rainforest, and included insects, colourful butterflies and animals too! The children have…

• Had a great time in the role play area, which is a 'Bug Laboratory' where they have pretended to be scientists, and found out about different mini-beasts.

• Enjoyed sampling a selection of rainforest fruits; they looked at and tasted Pineapple, Mango, Avocado, Carambola, Passion Fruit and Papaya. They described the fruit using many adjectives and produced a pie chart to record their favourites!

• Studied tropical birds and made Macaw masks.

• Created rainforest pictures.

• Baked spicy biscuits.

Doves have been learning about the Vikings, their gods and goddesses, what kind of homes they built and much more! They have…

• Made Viking shields and helmets!

• Put together some Viking menu cards by looking at the sort of household rubbish that was discovered by archaeologists in York. (Jorvik).

• Leant how many Vikings earned a nickname, which distinguished them from others with the same name and related to their character, appearance or deeds.

Eagles have been very busy working on their enterprise project. They have been researching, designing and making products out of recycled materials; hair ruffles, picture frames, pencil holders, bird feeders, bottle top jewellery and book marks, which were sold today at the coffee afternoon! All money raised from this will go to Manchester Children’s Hospital. Well done!

The children have also been discussing different careers and long term goals – from this parents and governors kindly came into school to talk to about their jobs and the children interviewed them with questions they had prepared.

My last day has almost arrived – I can’t actually believe I am saying it. I have loved working at Gisburn and seeing all the

children grow up. They come into school as nervous four year olds and leave as confident eleven year olds. I am proud to say I have worked at Gisburn and proud of all the children who have been

and are at school. Keep working hard! Jackie Clements x

We say ‘goodbye’ and ‘good luck’ to our Yr 6 Pupils and also to Tom Ashby who is also leaving us.
