Greetings GIRL STIR readers and welcome to another great issue! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday

season and are now ready to tackle the new year with a vengeance! And boy are we going to need every ounce of determination we have for the up coming year. We’ve got a lot of work to do and a lot to unlearn. That’s right I said, “Unlearn.” You see we’ve been lulled into believing all is well as long as we keep drinking the kool-aid and do not question anything.

The fact of the matter is, if you’ve ever read an issue of GIRL STIR then you know, we don’t drink the kool-aid around here and we question EVERYTHING. This year is going to be a huge year of unlearning and we are starting with FLUORIDE. You know, that stuff they dump into our water systems to supposedly “keep our teeth healthy.” If you believe fluoride is harmless, you do NOT want to miss this article! We’re also unlearning all about soy and genetically engineered mosquitoes!

The biggest development of the new year is the bill that was passed by both branches of Congress and signed into law, by President Obama, NDAA, that gives the military the right to sweep American Citizens from their homes and detain them indefinitely without charges or trial. That’s right, and all they need to do it is suspicion. Read the article in this issue to find out the details and which of your representatives voted for it. Of course we’ve got some great humor and inspiration this issue too so sit back, relax and enjoy the “Unlearning” experience of this issue of GIRL STIR!

Don’t miss our HUGE directory issue next month that will include some incredible life changing information and resources to keep you happy, healthy and FREE! See you next time, same time, same sandbox!

Page 15: GIRL STIR Jan 2012

15QUESTION I CHALLENGE I RETHINK

In the early 1990s, I began seeking therapies to supplement and replace the most toxic and least effective therapy in medicine:

chemotherapy for cancer. My colleagues and I identified five groups of ultra-potent, ultra-safe molecules that enlist the body’s own defenses. We discovered one of these molecules, carbobenzoxy beta-alanyl-taurine, or CObAT, to be consistently more than one thousand to one million times more potent by molecular weight than other anti-fatigue agents. While not indicated to treat any disease, CObAT is used to manage general fatigue, chronic fatigue-related syndromes (CFSs), and the fatigue that accompanies illness. CObAT is a unique compound now being discovered by the medical community after more than a decade of university research. The structure of CObAT includes taurine and beta-alanine. However, CObAT’s action exceeds that of these important amino acids and does not contain any free amino acids. CObAT is prepared as a classic homeopathic medicine via a series of 6 to 7 tenfold dilution steps (6X or 7X is homeopathic nomenclature). CObAT has also been modified to be efficiently absorbed through the oral mucosa. According to data presented at the 2003 Whole Person Healing Conference in bethesda, MD, CObAT reduced fatigue in approximately 90 percent of patients with moderate to severe fatigue due to a variety of causes. Patients experienced a 50 percent improvement in energy levels. In addition, benefits continued to increase for months. The uses of CObAT were discovered by researchers at the University of New Mexico. They found it stimulated inactive cells of the

immune system. Also, Dr. Carol Pontzer’s lab at the University of Maryland found that CObAT normalized the function of both overly active and inactive immune cells. immune modulation, cytokineS, and FatiGue CObAT is not a stimulant. Instead, it works by modulating the immune system. The immune system is controlled by messenger molecules called cytokines, which are chemicals similar to hormones or neurotransmitters. They control both the level and type of immune activity. Over a dozen cytokines and immune cell types must be coordinated to create an optimal immune response. When the immune system is in balance, an effective defense system results, while an unbalanced immune system allows the initiation of pathological conditions. The consensus is that the immune system is a factor in causing fatigue and other conditions. Scientists describe two major types of immune responses: Th1 and Th2. Th1 responses fight cancer, viruses, and pathogens. Th2 responses are often associated with the production of toxic “auto antibodies” and immune diseases. One of the toxic, negative effects of unbalanced cytokine production is fatigue. Fatigue is simply the immune system telling the brain that it is having difficulty winning the battle against the infection or the problem it is fighting. When doctors administer drugs that affect cytokines to fight hepatitis or cancer, a highly toxic reaction called cytokine syndrome occurs. The unbalanced cytokines cause debilitating fatigue, brain fog, pain, and depression. Cytokines produced by the body can also cause these symptoms. At the 38th annual

Page 16: GIRL STIR Jan 2012

meeting of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine in 2003, Aristo Vodjani, Ph.D., of ImmunoScience Laboratories presented studies on 2,500 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and Gulf War Syndrome—all illnesses characterized by fatigue, brain fog, pain, and depression. Dr. Vodjani found these syndromes had similar cytokine imbalances. Unfortunately, these people continued to have cytokine imbalances even after the initiating agent was gone. Thus, the best therapeutic approach seems to be one favoring the rebalancing of cytokine levels. homeopathic-proVinG trial In March of 2001, 39 volunteers completed the first homeopathic-proving trial for CObAT. The study was conducted by David Riley, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor at the University of New Mexico Medical School. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 92 percent of patients given COBAT had significant physiological effects, versus 26 percent of the patients given placebo. Reduced fatigue was only one of the benefits suggested by this study. “Of all the homeopathic provings I have been involved with (35 trials),” said Dr. Riley, “CObAT produced the strongest effects.” SaFety CObAT has been found to be non-toxic and safe. However, some people should not take CObAT. They include those with organ transplants and those on immunosuppressive therapies such as prescription steroids. Over-the-counter drugs do not usually interfere with

the action of CObAT. Patients with autoimmune disease should only take CObAT while under special care. SuGGeSted doSeS Some people respond to doses as low as 1 to 2 drops per day. On the standard high dose of 15 drops per day, people may experience feeling over-energized, have difficulty sleeping, or various aches (headaches, joint aches, etc.). For such patients, lower doses than suggested are more effective and without side effects. rate oF improVement and lenGth oF BeneFit Some patients respond to CObAT immediately with dramatic improvements. Occasionally, patients go through a cleansing phase during which dose reduction is appropriate. Many patients have a slow, steady increase in benefits. On average, a 5 to 10 percent improvement per week can be seen. Thus, a sufficient trial of one month or more is recommended before determining efficacy. Data suggests that continued use not only maintains the effect but also results in progressive improvement over time. In summary, as assessed by both clinical trials and in doctor/patient surveys, CObAT is very helpful for decreasing fatigue without toxicity. CObAT is offered by Allergy Research Group under the name Taurox Sb™ and comes in two strengths: Taurox Sb™ 6x Enhanced (regular strength) and Taurox Sb™ 7x with Minerals (for hypersensitive individuals).

A first grade teacher,

Miss Daisy, was having trouble with one of her students. The teacher asks, “Johnny! What is your problem?” Little Johnny says, “I’m too smart for the first grade. My sister is in the third grade and I’m smarter than she is! I think I should be in the third grade!” Miss Daisy had enough. She took Little Johnny to the principal’s office. While Little Johnny waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told the teacher he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his own questions he was to go back to the first grade and behave. The teacher agreed. Little Johnny is brought in the room. The principal tells Little Johnny and he agrees.

Principal: “What is 3 x 3?” Little Johnny: “9” Principal: “What is 6 x 6?” Little Johnny: “36” Principal: “What is 9 x 9?” Little Johnny: “81”

And so it went with every question the principal thought a third grader should know. He looks at Miss Daisy and tells her, “I think Little Johnny can go to the third grade.”

Miss Daisy says to the principal, “Let me ask him some questions?” The principal and Johnny both agree.

Miss Daisy asks, “What does a cow have 4 of that I have only 2 of?” Little Johnny: “Legs.” Miss Daisy: “What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?” The principal’s eyes open wide! before he could stop Johnny’s expected answer, Little Johnny says “Pockets.”

The principal breathes a sigh of relief and tells Miss Daisy, “Put Johnny in the fifth grade, I missed the last two questions.”

In 19th Century Ireland, you could find yourself on the street within weeks of losing

your job. As a woman, your chances of becoming homeless were even greater and living in secrecy to survive, was common. How do you find a way to be yourself? This is the universal connection in ALBERT NOBBS.

In the touching, gender-bending drama, award winning actress Glenn Close stars in the title role of Albert Nobbs, a shy, unassuming butler at a Dublin hotel. Albert however is really a woman. For some thirty years she has posed as a man to sustain work in poverty stricken, male-dominated 19th Century Ireland. Trapped in a prison of her own making, she lives in fear of being discovered by those who would out her.

Albert has saved every penny she earned over the years in hopes of someday realizing her dream of owning a small tobacco store. When her secret is discovered by a painter, Hubert Page (portrayed by Janet McTeer) a

friendship ensues and Albert begins to discover new possibilities including whether she should marry a fiery, quick-tongued young maid, Helen Dawes. Helen however, has fallen for Joe Machen, a roguish young man who tricked his way to a job at the hotel and is determined to go to America by any means possible.

Mia Wasikowska (Helen), Aaron Johnson (Joe) and brendan Gleeson (Dr. Holloran) join a prestigious, international cast that includes Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Janet McTeer, brenda Fricker and Pauline Collins. Rodrigo Garcia directs from a script that Glenn Close, along with Man booker prizewinning novelist John banville and Gabriella Prekop, adapted from a short story by Irish author George Moore.

Great health starts with great nutrition. According to the AVMA, up to 85% of all health challenges are linked to nutrition. With our expertise and experience in creating the bioComplete Natural Diets, and our years of using this to help pets with allergies, cancer, diabetes, endocrine challenges, dental problems, as well as everyday dog and cat issues, the expanded services in diagnosis and alternative veterinary services will provide you with peace of mind that your pet will be treated right.

In addition to the conventional diagnostics that are available such as blood analysis and radiology, cutting edge new testing such as hair mineral testing for toxic heavy metals, portable EKG, and others give us valuable tools to find core problems with your pet so they can be approached with cures in mind, rather than managing symptoms. Treatment modalities will include such alternative therapies as; nutrition, acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy, therapeutic massage and stretching, herbal including; classic, traditional Chinese, Persian, Ayurvedic, and more. These modalities have been used to treat both animals and man for thousands of years.

Emergency medical events will incorporate the latest in modern conventional medicine while respecting the natural approach that you’ve used as a great pet parent. A team approach will be the rule, not just a slogan or an option.

Natural, holistic care of both people and pets is on the rise and appears to be the approach of the future. While modern medical research has helped us to understand many of the

“Oxitec plans to release its genetically engineered mosquitoes in Key West as early as January 2012...”

A private firm is planning to release potentially harmful genetically engineered mosquitoes in the Florida keys as early as January, endangering human health and the environment

in what would become the first-ever U.S. release of these engineered bugs.

The genetically engineered mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti, are produced by Uk-based biotechnology company Oxitec so their offspring will die at a young age in an effort to

engineered mosquitoes remain unanswered:

Who will regulate their release and who will be legally and financially liable if something goes wrong? What impact will a major decrease in Aedes aegypti population have on the local food chain and ecosystem? Could other more dangerous bugs take its place, such as the Asian Tiger mosquito which is one of the most invasive species on the planet?

Will Oxitec be required to obtain the free and informed consent of key West residents (unlike in the Cayman Islands where “no public consultation was undertaken on potential risks and informed consent was not sought from local people”)? What happens when Oxitec’s mosquitoes survive into adulthood (since 3–4 percent have been found to do just that despite the flaw engineered into their genome)?

Although Oxitec plans to only release male genetically engineered mosquitoes, what are the risks if female genetically engineered mosquitoes are released (since the company sorts them by hand and up to 0.5 percent of the released insects are in fact female)? Since females bite humans, how could this impact human health? Will it hamper efforts to limit the spread of dengue fever?

Since Oxitec cannot completely eliminate a mosquito population will countries and communities become dependent on Oxitec for the indefinite future? What economic impacts will such dependence have on communities?

Until these and many other questions are answered it would be premature for Florida or the U.S. government to approve Oxitec’s planned release of genetically engineered mosquitoes in the Florida keys or anywhere else in the U.S.

lower mosquito populations and limit the spread of dengue fever. While attempts to limit the spread of disease are laudable, health, environmental and ethical challenges face what would be the first-ever release of genetically engineered mosquitoes in the U.S.

Genetically engineered mosquitoes have already been released by Oxitec in the Cayman Islands, Malaysia and brazil. Despite claims that its mosquitoes are sterile and have eradicated dengue fever the mosquitoes are in fact fertile and Oxitec has never successfully eradicated dengue fever from any population. The company has only shown its technology can reduce mosquito populations in the immediate term in controlled settings. Oxitec has not proven such population reductions lead to disease eradication.

The United States could be the next testing ground for Oxitec. The company plans to release its genetically engineered mosquitoes in key West as early as January 2012 – pending regulatory approval. Oxitec intends to release 5,000 to 10,000 genetically engineered mosquitoes over a two week period into an undisclosed 36-square-acre block – likely near the key West Cemetery. Many questions about genetically Source: www. foe.org

Although I am an environmental chemist (Ph.D in biochemistry),

I have been doing a lot of literature research on breast cancer since I saw an article on the National

Library of Medicine. That article documented an

increase in breast cancer

rates

between women who do wear bras versus those who do not.

That Harvard study fascinated me and I searched the medical literature for possible explanations. In January 1996, I discovered the book by Singer and Grismaijer and

their explanation of impaired lymphatic flow intrigued me. I have since read everything that I can find on lymphatic flow. What I have found has amazed me, but that is another story. In essence, what Singer and Grismaijer found was that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.

• Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a three out of four chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).

• Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a one out of seven risk.

• Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a one out of 152 risk.

• Women who wore bras rarely or never had a one out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.

The results of this study are compelling, even considering that it was not a “controlled study” for other risk factors. bear in mind that known (published in medical journals) risk factors for breast cancer are mostly in the range of less than three-fold differences. It should also be noted

that Singer and Grismaijer surveyed bra-wearing behavior of the past, which is excellent for a disease with such a long development period. In their book, the authors show how most of the known risk factors can be related to bra-wearing behavior and/or the lymphatic system.

For example, breast feeding and pregnancy cause full development of the mammary lymphatics. Also, women of higher economic status have higher breast cancer rates, and one would expect that they would wear their bras more hours per day. Women who excercise have lower risk, which could relate to better lymphatic circulation (and I would add, more breast movement).

To this discussion, I would like to add that lymphatic circulation in many tissues (especially the primary lymphatics) are highly dependent on MOVEMENT. When you sit for a long time on an airplane flight, your feet and ankles can swell, because lymphatic circulation goes to near zero. Wearing a bra, especially a constricting one with underwires, and especially to bed, prevents normal lymphatic flow and would likely lead to anoxia (lower than normal oxygen content), which has been related to fibrosis, which has been linked to increased cancer risk.

Women evolved under conditions where

Page 36: GIRL STIR Jan 2012

36 GIRL STIR

there was bREAST MOVEMENT with every step that they took when they walked or ran. My reading of the scientific literature about lymphatic flow shows me that this may be as important as the constriction factor. Every subtle bounce of the breast while moving, walking, running, etc. gently massages the breast and increases lymphatic flow and thus cleans the breast of toxins and wastes that arise from cellular metabolism.

Of course, there may be other mechanisms for the damage that bras apparently cause. One such mechanism could be temperature. breasts are external organs and have a naturally lower temperature. Cancers can be temperature-dependent. breast cancer is hormone-dependent. Temperature can alter hormone function. breast temperature changes throughout the monthly cycle.

All these facts are from the medical literature. by whatever mechanism, someone will eventually explain why Singer and Grismaijer found a 125-fold difference in cancer rates between bra-free breasts and those constricted by 24-hour-per-day bra-wearing.

If you haven’t already done so, I suggest that you read the book by Singer and Grismaijer ( Dressed to kill, Avery Press, 1995). (by the way, I have no

connection to the authors; I think that they live in Canada.)

Also, just for an interesting experiment, the next time you walk down the street, notice visually how constricting bras are. On many women you can actually see “dents” around the sides of their chests where there bras are, even in something as opaque as a black t-shirt.

A physical therapist friend of mine, after reading Dressed to kill, said that she was amazed at what she saw in her practice at a local medical clinic. She noticed how many women have red creases and grooves on the their bodies caused by their bras. Singer and Grismajer also suggest that you simply stop wearing one for two weeks and see how you feel.

by the way, I have heard that they are working on another study. The research is to study whether benign fibrocystic breast disease can be treated by stopping bra-wearing for eight weeks. That should be very interesting.

Years ago, many people thought that the idea of cigarettes causing lung cancer was funny. Even if further research with highly controlled studies only shows a difference of 5-fold, or even 2-fold, it will be no laughing matter.

The hands of the Clock of Time are moving swiftly onward! We cry out,

“backward, turn backward O Time in your flight,” but Time does not heed your cries.

It is later than you think!

Arouse yourself, fellow wayfarer; awake and take possession of your own mind while you still have enough Time to become, during the yet unexpired future, that which you would have liked to have been in the past.

Make the most of your present allotment of Time, with the hope that you will not have to reincarnate in order to do the job all over again because of neglect. You have been warned!

Now the responsibility is YOURS. There is a simple test by which you may judge whether or not you have been using your Time to best advantage. If you have attained peace of mind and material opulence sufficient for your needs, your Time has been properly used. If you have not attained these blessings, your Time has not been properly used, and you should begin now to search for the circumstances in connection with which you have fallen short.

The truly great people have no such reality as “idle time,” because they keep their minds geared eternally to patterns of constructive thought. by this profound use of their Time, they develop an alert sixth sense through which they look, listen, and see from within.

If negative thoughts stray into the minds of the truly great, these thoughts are immediately transmuted into positive thoughts and exercised by positive physical action appropriate to their nature.

Tick, tick, tick - the pendulum of the Clock of Time is swinging rapidly!

The entire face of civilization is undergoing an uplifting operation.

Mr. Right and Mr. Wrong are engaged in mortal combat for supremacy. The Time has come for everyone to stand up and be counted. The use each of us makes of his individual allotment of Time will tell whose side each of us is on - Mr. Right’s or Mr. Wrong’s.

Something has speeded up the Clock of Time so rapidly that the last half of the twentieth century will reveal to mankind more individual opportunities for self-improvement that have been revealed during the entire past of man’s existence.Your share of these vast

OPPORTUNITIES may be embraced and used only by the way you relate yourself to TIME!

My Whole Pet Market, is a comprehensive pet center,

located in Royal Palm beach, Florida, at 10323 Southern blvd.

The owners worked hard to create a center where pet owners could come to have all their pet needs met, with each department working hand in hand together to provide a team approach to pet care.

The center, in the same location

for over 24 years, provides a pet center and market, a full service animal hospital, and a grooming salon.

The hospital, although offering all traditional conventional medical care, also provides a more natural approach to health, homeopathic medicine. The hospital is an integrative veterinary practice, offering the best of both approaches as indicated by the pets’ needs. The practice offers; conventional wellness exams, vaccinations or vaccination titer testing, surgical services, full diagnostic testing, including in-house blood testing, radiography and ultrasound, dietary supplements and all the services of a full service conventional practice and the added benefits of alternative systems of medicine that can improve a

pets’ health and longevity.

We take the “less” is “more” approach to health and wellness for your pet. Homeopathy is said to treat the patient, not the disease and assisting the body in “healing itself”. The methods for diagnosing and treating manifestation of a disturbance in the “vital force” and symptoms of disease are absolutely unique to each patient.

The all-in-one facility allows the veterinary physician to walk the patient family through the market to determine the best nutrition for their pet, one on one individualized support is believed to be crucial in making decisions for a pet.

If in the course of being groomed being groomed and pampered in the pet salon, the groomer identifies an area of concern, she can bring it to the attention of the medical staff. The center takes a team approach to finding the best path to health for all the pets in our “family”!

The market has a department for each species of pet from dogs and cats to small mammals, salt & fresh water fish, reptiles, exotics and an enormous avian department specializing in both small and large exotic birds. The market is currently holding a store wide clearance of previous lines, to make room for becoming a more natural, holistic and homeopathic health center for pets.

My Whole Pet Market has created an environment that is entertaining for the whole family. The store boasts many “mascots” who roam freely. Henrietta, the giant sulcatta African tortoise, Miko, the

marmoset monkey, Flower the prairie dog and a walk-in aviary that allows a you to get up close and personal with the Lorikeet Parrots. The parrots have been hand-trained and will sit atop heads and arms to eat nectar from your hand!

My Whole Pet Market believes that many people first experience pets of all varieties in their local pet center. The store desires to be not only a place to obtain needed care and supplies, but to be a consistent resource for their pet families. Their principal is that the relationship does not end when a family purchases a new pet, it only begins.

All pets at the market come from home breeders or bred in the store itself. They believe that it is extremely important where a pet comes from and where it spends the first weeks of life. They are committed to making sure you receive a healthy, happy pet. The market also takes in animals for re-homing when necessary and hosts a huge a dog, cat and kitten adoption program.

Fluoride in drinking water was originally added in the 1940s to prevent tooth decay.

Studies have now shown that fluoride causes dental fluorosis in 10% of the population. Even more disturbing than the cosmetic impact that fluoride can have on teeth, research is also linking fluoride to increased risk of cancer (particularly bone cancer), gene mutations, reproductive problems, neurotoxicity (hyper or depressed activity), bone fluorosis (decreasing density). In fact, in 1999, the EPA’s Headquarters Union of Scientists took a stand opposing fluoridation of drinking water supplies. The fluoride used for water fluoridation does not have FDA approval and is considered by the FDA as an “unapproved drug”. The proper use of any drug requires

an understanding of how much is too much. Since fluoride is already in many foods and beverages, an estimated total intake of existing fluoride amounts is imperative. Research shows fluoridation is unnecessary since we’re already receiving 300% or more of the American Dental Association’s recommended daily amount.

3. Fluoride depletes the energy reserves and the ability of white blood cells to properly destroy foreign agents by the process of phagocytosis. as little as 0.2 ppm fluoride stimulates superoxide production in resting white blood cells, virtually abolishing phagocytosis. even micro-molar amounts of fluoride, below 1 ppm, may seriously depress the ability of white blood cells to destroy pathogenic agents. the contents of a family size tube of fluoridated toothpaste is enough to kill a 25 pound child.

in 1991, the akron (ohio) regional poison center reported that “death has been reported following ingestion of 16mg/kg of fluoride. • Only 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride could kill a 100 pound adult. According to the Center, “fluoride toothpaste contains up to 1mg/gram of fluoride.” Even Proctor and Gamble, the makers of Crest, acknowledge that a family-sized tube “theoretically contains enough fluoride to kill a small child.”

Fluorides have been used to modify behavior and mood of human beings. • It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them docile and inhibit questioning of authority, both in Nazi prison camps in World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia.

Fluorides are medically categorized as protoplasmic poisons, which is why they are used to kill rodents.

The September 18, 1943 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, states, “fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons, changing the permeability of the cell membrane by inhibiting certain enzymes. the exact mechanisms of such actions are obscure.”

Fluoride consumption by human beings

increases the general cancer death rate. • In 1975 Dr. John Yiamouyiannis published a preliminary survey which showed that people in fluoridated areas have a higher cancer death rate than those in non-fluoridated areas. • The National Cancer Institute attempted to refute the studies. • Later in 1975 Yiamouyiannis joined with Dr. Dean burk, chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute (1939-1974) in performing other studies which were then included in the Congressional Record by Congressman Delaney, (who was the original author of the Delaney Amendment, which prohibited the addition of cancer-causing substances to food used for human consumption.) • Both reports confirmed the existence of a link between fluoridation and cancer. (Note: Obviously Dr. burk felt free to agree with scientific truth only after his tenure at National Cancer Institute ended, since his job depended on towing the party line).

Fluorides have little or no effect on decay prevention in humans.

in 1990, dr. John colquhoun was forced into early retirement in new zealand after he conducted a study on 60,000 school children and found no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and unfluoridated areas. • He additionally found that a substantial number of children in fluoridated areas suffered from dental fluorosis. He made the study public.

there is no scientific data that shows that fluoride mouth rinses and tablets are safe for human use.

in 1989 a study by hildebolt, et al. on 6,000 school children contradicted any alleged

benefit from the use of sodium fluorides.

a 1990 study by dr. John yiamouyiannis on 39,000 school children contradicted any alleged benefits from the use of sodium fluorides. • In 1992 Michael Perrone, a legislative assistant in New Jersey, contacted the FDA requesting all information regarding the safety and effectiveness of fluoride tablets and drops. After 6 months of stalling, the FDA admitted they had no data to show that fluoride tablets or drops were either safe or effective. They informed Perrone that they will “probably have to pull the tablets and drops off the market.”• The fact that fluoride toothpastes and school based mouth rinses are packaged in aluminum accentuates the effect on the body.

in 1976, dr. d. allman and coworkers from indiana university School of medicine fed animals 1 part-per-million (ppm) fluoride and found that in the presence of aluminum, in a concentration as small as 20 parts per billion, fluoride is able to cause an even larger increase in cyclic amp levels. • Cyclic AMP inhibits the migration rate of white blood cells, as well as the ability of the white blood cell to destroy pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms. 51QUESTION I CHALLENGE I RETHINK

After decades of hearing marketing spin about how soy is a wonder food,

a protein-rich legume able to rescue us from our dependence on meat, I suppose it’s understandable why so many people have yet to understand fully the dangers of soy. Really, you’re not going to get the full story unless you research it on your own. And why would you, when soy is “universally” touted as a health food? Well, it isn’t.

danGerS oF Soy

Thankfully, more and more independent research has been done regarding the dangers of soy, and what it’s revealed should scare you.

phytoeStroGenS

Soy is higher in phytoestrogens than just about any other food source.

Phytoestrogens are plant-based estrogens that mimic estrogen in our bodies. In recent years, you may have read about studies which indicate phytoestrogens are good for you. but ask yourself, who funded those studies? The soy industry, that’s who. Independent research has clearly shown that consuming phytoestrogens is downright dangerous for the human body.

It’s only common sense. No one argues,

for example, that a leading cause of breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, infertility, and low libido is unopposed estrogen, or estrogen dominance. Why, then, would anyone argue that we should consume more of a food high in estrogen?

An infant taking the recommended amount of soy formula is consuming a hormone load equivalent of 4 birth control pills a day! Is it any wonder we’ve seen such a dramatic rise in precocious puberty with young girls starting their periods at 6 and 7?

GoitroGenic

Soy will destroy your thyroid. Many foods are goitrogenic (thyroid suppressing), but soy is king of them all. Goitrogens work by preventing your thyroid from getting the necessary amount of iodine. Friends, I believe this is what happened to Oprah’s thyroid. She pushed soy for years, featured it in everyone one of her “healthy” diets, and it destroyed her thyroid. If your thyroid fails, what happens? You gain weight. You have a harder time regulating your moods. You get colder more easily. You’re more easily fatigued. You demonstrate an inability to concentrate and remember details. The list goes on. You simply don’t want to mess with

Page 52: GIRL STIR Jan 2012

your thyroid.

phytateS

Phytates are enzyme-inhibitors that block mineral absorption in human digestive tract. They are naturally present in all grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. but soy is so high in phytates that it’s almost impossible to get rid of them. Simply soaking soy overnight in an acidic medium won’t do the trick. Soy must be fermented in order to be digestible to humans. That means that if you eat soy at all, you should stick to fermented soy products like miso, tempeh, natto, or a naturally fermented soy sauce (tamari).

trypSin inhiBitorS

Finally soy is rich in trypsin inhibitors. Trypsin is a digestive enzyme we need to properly digest protein. Without enough trypsin, you’ll experience many digestive problems including stomach cramps, diarrhea, and bleeding. You’ll also be leaving yourself open to future problems with your pancreas.

deBunkinG the aSian Soy myth

But, people say, what about Asians? They eat soy every day, and they’re so healthy!

In an article by Nina Planck, she writes:

“Soy farming started around 1100 bC in China, where it was used to build soil fertility and feed animals. Soy beans were not considered fit for humans until the Chinese learned to ferment them, which makes them digestible. Asian diets now include fermented soy beans in the form of natto, miso, tamari, and tempeh.”

Soy producers want you to eat more soy — more than the Asians eat, and more than is good for you. The Japanese and Chinese eat 10 grams of soy per day — about two teaspoons. Yet a soy manufacturer recommends Americans eat ten times what the Japanese eat — 100 grams of soy protein per day. In The Soy Zone, barry Sears recommends a daily diet of a minimum of 50 grams of soy, and up to 75 grams for women and 100 grams for men.

It’s like red wine: a glass or two a day may be good for you; a bottle or two every day rots your liver.

Did you catch that? Asians only eat 2 teaspoons of soy a day, usually as a condiment, and it’s highly fermented! Fermentation takes care of many of the dangers of soy. Plus, the typical Asian will also consume soy with mineral-rich and

nutrient-dense foods such as fish broth (naturally high in iodine & other minerals which support the thyroid).

So, iS Soy Bad For you?

The short answer? YES! Let’s be clear on the recent history of soy. The soybean was a modest and unpopular crop until food manufacturers intent on creating cheap vegetable oils convinced the U.S. government to start subsidizing it. The soy was turned into oil, and the industry was left with an industrial waste product. Then somebody had a brilliant idea:

Let’s take this industrial waste product full of toxins and carcinogens — isolated soy protein — and turn it into food that people will eat! Soy foods were born.

From Nina Planck’s article:

“The FDA refused to approve isolated soy protein as a safe food additive with the designation ‘Generally Recognized as Safe.’ ”

Agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland withdrew its application for the coveted GRAS status for soy protein, after an outcry from scientists about the toxins and carcinogens that come with it. They can still put soy protein in your food, but they have to get pre-market approval for every product.

Isolated soy protein is no health food. but we don’t eat soy protein with a spoon.

How do we eat it? It is the main ingredient in soy burgers, ice cream, milk shakes, and fake cheese. These soy protein products are phony foods — but they must look like the real foods they imitate. So the soy industry transforms a small yellow soy bean into something resembling a hamburger. They make soy “milk” and “ice cream” white and creamy.

The other ingredients in these foods are no better for you than the soy protein that goes into them. Soy milk, for example, is simply a cocktail of soy protein, sugar, and vegetable oil. The “natural” MSG formed in soy processing is already bad for you, but even more MSG, and more flavorings, are added. Imitation foods need a lot of help to be tasty. Many savory soy foods are loaded with additives to give them the flavor of the real foods they mimic. Most imitation meat, for example, contains man-made MSG, which causes migraines and is associated with brain cancer.

Soy foods aren’t real food. They aren’t traditional. They aren’t old. They’re industrial waste products dressed up in pretty clothes and marketed to an ignorant public.

President barack Obama rang in the New Year by signing the NDAA law with its provision allowing him to indefinitely detain citizens. It was a symbolic moment, to

say the least. With Americans distracted with drinking and celebrating, Obama signed one of the greatest rollbacks of civil liberties in the history of our country … and citizens partied in unwitting bliss into the New Year.

Ironically, in addition to breaking his promise not to sign the law, Obama broke his promise on signing statements and attached a statement that he really does not want to detain citizens indefinitely.

Obama insisted that he signed the bill simply to keep funding for the troops. It was a continuation of the dishonest treatment of the issue by the White House since the law first came to light. As discussed earlier, the White House told citizens that the president would not sign the NDAA because of the provision. That spin ended after sponsor Senator Carl Levin (Democrat, Michigan) went to the floor and disclosed that it was the White House that insisted that there be no exception for citizens in the indefinite detention provision.

The latest claim is even more insulting. You do not “support our troops” by denying the principles for which they are fighting. They are not fighting to consolidate authoritarian powers in the president. The “American way of life” is defined by our constitution and specifically the bill of rights. Moreover, the insistence that you do not intend to use authoritarian powers does not alter the fact that you just signed an authoritarian measure. It is not the use but the right to use such powers that defines authoritarian systems. The almost complete failure of

the mainstream media to cover this issue is shocking. Many reporters have bought into the spin of the Obama administration as they did the spin over torture by the bush administration. Even today, reporters refuse to call waterboarding torture despite the long line of cases and experts defining waterboarding as torture for decades.

On the NDAA, reporters continue to mouth the claim that this law only codifies what is already the law. That is not true. The administration has fought any challenges to indefinite detention to prevent a true court review. Moreover, most experts agree that such indefinite detention of citizens violates the constitution.

There are also those who continue the longstanding effort to excuse Obama’s horrific record on civil liberties by blaming either others or the times. One successful myth is that there is an exception for citizens. The White House is saying that changes to the law made it unnecessary to veto the legislation. That spin is ridiculous. The changes were the inclusion of some meaningless rhetoric after key amendments protecting citizens were defeated. The provision merely states that nothing in the provisions could be construed to alter Americans’ legal rights. Since the Senate clearly views citizens as not just subject to indefinite detention but even to execution without a trial, the change offers nothing but rhetoric to hide the harsh reality.

The Obama administration and Democratic members are in full spin mode – using language designed to obscure the authority given to the military. The exemption for American citizens from the mandatory detention requirement (section 1032) is the screening language for the next section, 1031, which offers no exemption for American citizens from the authorization to use the

military to indefinitely detain people without charge or trial.

Obama could have refused to sign the bill and the Congress would have rushed to fund the troops. Instead, as confirmed by Senator Levin, the White House conducted a misinformation campaign to secure this power while portraying the president as some type of reluctant absolute ruler, or, as Obama maintains, a reluctant president with dictatorial powers.

Most Democratic members joined their Republican colleagues in voting for this un-American measure. Some Montana citizens are moving to force the removal of these members who, they insist, betrayed their oaths of office and their constituents. Most citizens, however, are continuing to treat the matter as a distraction from the holiday cheer. For civil libertarians, the NDAA is our Mayan moment: 2012 is when the nation embraced authoritarian powers with little more than a pause between rounds of drinks.
