Unit 1 - Live and LearnSkills practice

1 Students’ own answers

2 TapescriptAlison: Are you enjoying your new job, Nancy?Nancy: Well, I must say, being head teacher at

Burton Secondary is harder than I expected. But, yes, I like it!

Alison: You’ve been at Burton for a month now, haven’t you?

Nancy: Yes, that’s right. Although I feel as if I’ve been working there for years!

Alison: Are the teachers you work with nice?Nancy: They’re great. And I’ve got a secretary –

Jane Punton – who’s absolutely fantastic. Whenever I have a problem or there’s something I don’t understand, I go to her and she finds the answer. As you can imagine, I give her lots of things to do.

Alison: What’s the job like? I mean, what sort of things do you do every day?

Nancy: Well, I meet the teachers before school starts every morning to talk about any problems and hear their news. And I plan timetables, speak to other schools and talk to parents. And I spend a lot of time writing and working at my computer.

Alison: Do you teach any lessons?Nancy: Yes, I do. I teach Religious Studies. I

think it’s important that I still teach all the students. That way, I get to know them better.

Alison: It sounds like hard work, Nancy!

ListeningTapescriptMAN 1: I work as a careers adviser so I spend a lotof my time talking to young students about theirplans for the future. I’ve found that these daysmore and more students are having a gap yearbefore they go to college or university. In case youdon’t know what a gap year is, let me explain. Agap year is a year away from education – a kind oflong break – and students usually take their gapyear between finishing secondary school andgoing on to further education at a college oruniversity. The idea is that students get a chanceto see ‘the real world’ before they go to college. Some gap year students use the year to work andmake some money. And some of them get a jobthat is connected to the subject they plan to studyat university. But a lot of gap year students use thetime to travel. Some of them work in differentcountries in the world, and others just travelaround. This is another way for young people toget experience of what life is like outside school. It can be a good thing to have a gap year. One advantage of taking a gap year is that itmakes young people more mature – I mean, theyare more grown up and have seen and done morethan the students who go straight from school tocollege. Students who have been living andworking in a different country for twelve monthshave seen different people and talked aboutdifferent things. They often know more about lifethan their friends who haven’t taken a gap year. There are disadvantages too, though. A lot ofstudents who take a gap year need money fromtheir parents, and not all parents can afford to payfor this. And, some students don’t use their gapyear well; they become lazy and decide they don’twant to go to college after all. But, in general, I think gap years are a good ideaand can give young people the time to thinkabout what they want in the future.

Davina: Really? I didn’t know she’d bought a pair! Was she wearing her blue trousers as well?

Kate: Yes, she was. She looked great.Davina: Becki always looks good. She doesn’t

wear fashionable clothes, but she knows how to look good.

Kate: Yes, she knows what clothes to wear together – that’s the most important thing, I think.

Davina: What about Georgina – what did she wear? Kate: She had a new dress on – black and

sleeveless. She looked nice but I didn’t like her shoes much!

Davina: She didn’t wear her old black sandals again, did she?

ListeningTapescriptI used to be a fashion designer, and I can tell you,it’s a fantastic job! I had always wanted to workin the world of fashion. By the time I was ten, Iknew I wanted to be a designer. At school, I wasalways drawing pictures of clothes. I used to drawclothes I liked, but they weren’t like the clothesyou saw in the shops in those days. I guess I wasdesigning clothes when I was ten – but nobodywas interested in my designs at that time. By thetime I finished school, I’d written letters to a lotof famous designers in London and Paris askingthem if I could work with them when I finishedcollege. And one of them – Carlos Rodrigo –wrote back and offered me a job if I did well atcollege. I went to college for three years andworked really hard. I got excellent marks and my

dress and shoe designs were the best in thecollege. So then I went to work for Rodrigo andhe gave me the job of designing jackets and coatsfor the winter season. I did well and he was sopleased he made me his head designer. I loved it!I used to work very hard every day – sometimesfor twelve or fourteen hours a day. But I didn’tmind because I was doing the job I’d alwayswanted to do. After a few years, I started my ownbusiness and before long people all over theworld were buying and wearing my designs. Istopped work two years ago – I wanted time formy family – but I miss my job. I miss the fashionshows and the excitement of seeing my designsbeing made into clothes. But, I must say, it’s nicenot having to work so hard.

Pat: Yes, it is. That’s one of the reasons why I do it. I was worried about my weight andmy heart, so I went and told the doctor how I felt. She told me to join the gym, and I’m very glad she did. I feel really well now.

Sue: Hmm – maybe I ought to join. I don’t need to lose weight but I do want to be a bit fitter.

ListeningTapescriptLast week I decided to find out how unhealthy thestudents at my college really are. I made a list ofquestions and then went round the college askingpeople to answer them.I asked how often people exercised and wassurprised at the answers. One girl I spoke to saidshe had never exercised in her life, apart fromPhysical Education lessons at school. Well – I wasamazed! I told her not to be so lazy! Anyway, she was the only one who said she hadn’tdone any exercise. A lot of the students said theydidn’t think they needed to exercise as they wereyoung and healthy. But there were also a lot ofstudents who told me that they tried to exercise asoften as they could. Some of them enjoyedjogging, but most of them liked to go to thecollege gym. It’s free, which students liked, and it’sopen from seven in the morning until ten at night,so people can go there after their lessons or evenbefore college starts in the mornings. Then I asked people what sports they did andmost of them told me they did at least one sport aweek. The most popular things were five-a-sidefootball and basketball – and I think that’sbecause there are good courts and pitches atcollege to play in. But more than half the people Ispoke to said they were trying to keep fit byjogging or swimming. One boy told me he swamevery morning at six and jogged every eveningbefore supper. I asked him if he had always doneso much exercise, and he explained that he’s amember of the college athletics team, so fitness isimportant to him.The good thing about my survey was the fact thatnearly all the people I questioned said they wouldalways continue to work out and stay fit becausethey realised how important it was. And I thinkthat’s the main thing – don’t forget your fitness!

Pete: That’s terrible! What are you going to do?

Dave: Good question! I’ve got to find work soon. I’ve got three kids, you know. And I’ve got the rent to pay.

Pete: I’ve heard they’re looking for people at the plastics factory down the road from where I work. Two of my friends went there for work and they both got jobs – only part-time, but that’s better than nothing.

Dave: I’ll go and ask, then. I’ll do anything right now, to be honest. And I work hard, you know. My boss always said that about me.

Pam: Actually, I didn’t know tigers were in danger.

Lauren: Well, it says in this advert that there are less than 7,000 wild tigers left in the world.

Pam: Why are tigers disappearing, then?Lauren: Because men hunt them for their skins

and because the forests that tigers livein are disappearing. People are cuttingdown the trees.

Pam: But tigers don’t live in trees!Lauren: No, they don’t – but they hunt for

their food and if there aren’t any trees, there isn’t any food for the tigers.

Pam: So, if we don’t do anything to help, allthe tigers in the world will disappear? That’s terrible.

Lauren: Yes, it is. I think I’m going to join the organisation. What about you?

Pam: Yes, me too. In fact, I think if we ask some of the other kids at school, they’ll want to join too.

ListeningTapescriptHi! I’m Erin and I’m a member of ‘The GreenKids’! The Green Kids are a group of kids at myschool who all care about the environment andare doing what we can every day to help tosave it. There are more than one hundred kidsin The Green Kids now and we meet every weekto talk about what we can do to make ourschool and our town more environmentallyfriendly.A lot of people don’t know how much damagesome schools are doing to the environment. Wetry to educate kids about this, because if morepeople knew about the dangers, they would domore to help. For example, take something as simple as paper.Schools use a huge amount of paper every day.But does your school recycle all its paper waste? And do all the students write on both sides ofevery piece of paper? If we all do those twothings, we will be saving a few trees every year! And the same goes for water. If every studenthas a drink and leaves the tap running, they arewasting a lot of water every day. We should allturn the tap off after we have a drink – at

school and at home.Another thing we do in our school is collectthings for recycling. We have got bins for cans, bottles, plastic and cardboard. And we recyclefood too! We put all the food that we don’t eatinto a huge bin called a compost bin – and wemake compost to put on the school garden everyyear. The great thing about recycling is that youcan use almost everything again and again! The Green Kids at my school have designedposters as well – and we stick them up allaround our town so that everyone in thecommunity will start to think about thewonderful world we live in.Have you got an environmental group at yourschool? If you haven’t, why don’t you start onetoday? It’s easy and it’s fun – and you’ll behelping to save the world!

2 TapescriptMalcolm: Come on, Tod, let’s go back into

the house and get our things ready for school tomorrow.

Tod: Hey, wait a second! Look, Malcolm! What’s that in the sky? I think it’s a UFO!

Malcolm: Don’t be silly! It’s a plane – well, OK,not a plane – a helicopter. It’s definitely not a UFO.

Tod: Oh, yes – you’re right. I won’t take aphoto, then. I’d love to see a UFO one day, wouldn’t you?

Malcolm: I don’t want to sound boring, but I don’t believe in UFOs.

Tod: You don’t? Well, do you believe in aliens?

Malcolm: No.Tod: What would you do if you saw a

little green man walking towards you, then?

Malcolm: Well, I’d say hello to it and go and shake it by the hand, I guess! If it had hands! Don’t tell me you believein aliens!

Tod: Well, yes, I do! I’ve read a lot of magazines about this sort of thing and there’s a lot of evidence of life on other planets, you know. And I saw a TV programme about a place in America where they have got some real alien spaceships.

Malcolm: Well, I refuse to believe any of it until I see something with my own eyes.

ListeningTapescriptSome people believe that by 2020 as many as12,000 people a year will be having holidays inspace! Certainly, since 2004, when SpaceShipOnewas the first private spaceship to go up intospace, the dream of having a holiday among thestars has become a reality. There are now quite afew large companies in both America and Britainthat are trying to build spaceships to carryholidaymakers up into space for the trip of alifetime. However, a trip into space isn’t going to be acheap holiday. The tickets will cost fifty to ahundred thousand dollars each! But that hasn’tstopped a lot of people in America booking theirtickets already. One man who has already paid forhis ticket is Stephen Nash of London. Stephen

thinks the idea of being one of the first spacetourists is very exciting and he says he can’t waitto get the phone call telling him when theholiday is going to happen.Of course, the early space holidays won’t beanything like holidays on Earth. There won’t behotels, or beaches or anything like that. Spacetourists will spend all their time inside theirspaceship, enjoying the feeling of weightlessnessand learning what the life of an astronaut isreally like. But they will have amazing views ofthe solar system. And just think of the holidayphotos – pictures of the earth taken fromthousands of miles away!In years to come it is possible that companies willstart to explore the idea of building hotels on theMoon or having space stations in the atmospherefor holidaymakers to visit. Who know, maybe oneday people will be buying spacesuits for theirholidays instead of swimsuits.

2 TapescriptChelise: I love walking along the beach, Eli.

It’s always so interesting.Eli: Yes, Chelise, I like it too – in the

summer! But it’s a bit cold for me today – I’m not sure January’s the month for a walk on the beach!

Chelise: Oh but it is. Look at this for instance! Isn’t it lovely?

Eli: It’s a piece of wood – so what. I can’t see anything lovely about it.

Chelise: Just think about it – it looks like wood from a boat. How did it get here? I think it was carried here by the waves and the tide.

Eli: Hmm – yes, I guess so.Chelise: Well, that’s what makes the beach so

fascinating! Look at all the tiny shells as well – how were they brought here?

Eli: On the waves again?Chelise: Yes – but think how far some of them

have been carried. Some of the creatures that lived in those shells probably live a long way out to sea – and maybe quite deep down in the sea too.

Eli: I don’t like shells very much. But I’ll tell you what I think is interesting … look at the patterns on the sand! It’s been blown about by the wind – it’s very pretty! Hey – let’s write our names in the sand!

Chelise: Great idea! I’m going to write my name with shells!

ListeningTapescriptSpeaker 1:I know it’s not the sort of thing that can beenjoyed by everybody. A lot of my friends wouldrather be fishing, but I love it! It’s fast andexciting and that feeling of being out on thewater and racing along is amazing! I know somepeople are afraid of falling off, but not me! I’mcareful, but I know that even if I do fall off, Ican swim, so I’ll be fine. I think it’s quite safe, really. Yes, I think it’s one of the best things you

can do, and I recommend it to you!

Speaker 2:Well, I love water anyway, so something like thisis perfect for me. I built it myself and I’m theone who looks after it – you know, keeps itclean, feeds the fish and things like that. I’malways careful whenever children come thatthey don’t fall in, but on the whole it’s quitesafe. And, it looks nice as well – lots of peoplesay how much they like it.

Speaker 3:Wow! This is amazing! I’ve never seen watermoving so fast before – just look how powerfulit is! Can you imagine what it’s like to be in thewater there? It must be incredible! I don’t thinkthere are any fish there – I mean, how couldthey swim with jets of water like that comingdown on top of them? Just wait - I’m going totake some more pictures.

Speaker 4:This is the life! I really enjoy this, you know. It’sso relaxing – and after a week working in a fast, noisy office, this is the perfect thing to do at theweekend. To be honest, I often don’t catchanything, but I don’t care. I just sit here andenjoy the water and the view. Actually, sometimes I even fall asleep! I don’t do it allyear – it’s a thing for the summer. In winter, I goskiing, but on a warm, summer’s day, this is justthe thing.
