"Yours was a wonderful play, and when you think about it, a technically correct play as well. Throwing the Queen had to be right. After all, what was pard leading from? If his lead was from top of nothing, throwing the Q did not matter since declarer then had to hold the K and the J. If he had that holding he surely would have let the lead run to his hand. Since he did not, throwing the Queen was a 100% play!"Martha, "I was the one who threw the Queen at trick one! Why are you doing the lecturing?"George, "Sorry…"

I threw a Queen away the other day!second Swiss, finishing second in the event, due to (get this!) a break in tempo. (Harry didn't know what a BIT was then!) This served to propel him to winning the national mini-McKenney race for rookie. After the family closed the business, a friend, who wintered in Stuart, suggested that Harry might do well to move there and take up the bridge business. The rest is history. Certainly, bridge has been good for Harry, but we all agree that Harry being in bridge is good for all of us. Thanks Harry! Belated Happy Birthday and many, many more.

A Chamblissful Surprise!By Nancy Sparks

On July 2, 2009, New Smyrna Beach Bridge Club honored their director Mrs. Patti Chambliss with a festive birthday surprise party. Fourteen tables were in play. Richard Lemmon directed so Patti could play with Joanne Behr. Terry Hagen read an original poem about Patti. There were expansive tables of food, decorations and refreshments. Patti was presented with a cash gift from club members. Patti is well-loved and appreciated for all her

work and dedication. Patti has been New Smyrna Beach's director since 1978.

Harry Falk's web site is harrybridge.com and it contains information about the lo-cal duplicates in his area as well as tournaments at which he officiates.

When I learned to play bridge in upstate New York in the 80's, the local bridge community was a bit unusual. Most of the players in the area did not play transfers over 1NT, but instead played 2 way Stayman, where a 2♦ bid over 1NT was game forcing Stayman. In playing this system at tournaments, I quickly learned the responsibilities of properly alerting our bids, since we were playing something that most of our opponents were not expecting. Whether you're playing in a tournament or at the local club, when you and your partner agree to play conventional bids, you are responsible for knowing what the bids mean and when they apply. It is not the responsibility of the opponents to understand your system. It is not their responsibility to know whether or not a bid should be alerted. The responsibility is yours, and you are expected to meet your responsibilities. While the alert system can be somewhat confusing, most of it is really pretty sensible. In most cases, if you make a bid that isn't natural, it should be alerted. In some of the most

common cases, the alert requirement has been removed or modified. Some of these include 2♣ Stayman bids, a 2♦ response to an opening 2♣ bid, and most normal uses of a cue bid. In all of these cases, there is no alert needed, since these uses are so common that they are almost universally recognized. In some other cases, the alert has been modified to an "announcement". Transfers to the major suits (♦s to ♥s and ♥s to ♠s) simply require an announcement of a transfer. An opening bid of 1♣ that could be as short as two cards (so that a 1♦ opening bid promises 4 ♦s) requires an announcement that the ♣ suit "could be short". We all expect a 1♣ opener to show 3 or more ♣s and 13-21 points. If your 1♣ opener could be shorter than 2 and weaker than the expected range, your bid must be alerted, not announced as "could be short". It is up to you to make sure that the opponents have reason to ask about your system. The alert is the reason. In most other cases, bids that have meanings that are different than the

BEING RESPONSIBLE AT THE TABLEby Harry Falk • [email protected]

opponents would normally expect must be alerted. If you play 2♠ over 1NT as a transfer to the minors, you should alert, not announce a transfer. If you play 2♣ over 1♥ or 1♠ as Drury, you must alert. If you play 3♣ or 3♦ as Bergen Raises over 1♥ or 1♠, you must alert. If you play 2NT as a strong raise over 1♥ or 1♠, you must alert. If you play any conventional system over the opponents' 1NT, as long as the bid is not natural, you must alert. (If 2♠ shows ♠s, you don't need to alert, but if it shows ♠s and a minor, you must alert.) When asked about the meaning of a conventional bid, it is your responsibility to fully disclose the meaning of the bid when asked. So, if partner bids 3♣ over 1♠, when asked, you should explain that this bid is

artificial and shows 10-11 points and 4 ♠s. You should not say that it is a Bergen Raise and expect the opponents to know what that shows. It is up to you to be sure that the opponents are sufficiently informed. The opponents have the right not only to ask about a bid that was made, but they are also entitled to ask about systemic bids that could have been chosen and were not. It is your responsibility to explain to the best of your understanding such questions. Whatever conventional bids you choose to play, be sure you understand what information you should be expected to provide for the opponents, and be sure to deliver it to them in the appropriate manner. If you require further information, you can view the ACBL alert chart at the ACBL's website-- www.acbl.org.

Inferences are what the game of bridge is all about. When you are playing a hand, there are so many decisions to make that logic and probabilities are not enough to make you a successful declarer. To be a great declarer you have to make use of all the information available to you at the table. One of the most useful pieces of information is what your opponents do and even more importantly, what they don't do! Making full use of this information is your challenge today… In the last round of the Life Master Pairs in the Washington DC 2009 NABC, a former US National Team Player (and Bermuda Bowl Semi-Finalist) was in the top 10 and looking for a high finish. On this hand he took far fewer tricks than he should have. There were many inferences available that he missed – see if you can do better.

You hold♠ KJ♥ Q5♦ KJ9862♣ AK3

NV vs. Vul., Partner is the Dealer

You open 1♦ in third seat, LHO overcalls 1♥, your partner raises to 2♦, and RHO bids 2♥. Knowing that your

partner is one of the most aggressive competitive bidders in the expert community you wisely compete only to 3♦. This passes around to your RHO who thinks for a while and finally decides to pass.

LHO leads the ♣8.

You win in hand and face the ♦K.1: ♣8 x x A (+1)2: ♦K x x 10 (+2)

Now you lead the ♦J and LHO plays low, what do you do?

So what is going on? Here is what you should be thinking about: your side has 24 HCP (your opponents have only 16 HCP). Your opponents were Red vs. White, with only 16 HCP and only an

8-card ♥ fit, yet they bid and raised ♥ and thought about bidding again. What do you think your opponents' hands look like?

RHO thought about taking a second bid. So he must have some decent values. But there aren't that many values for him to have – so he is likely to have good shape. LHO made a Red vs. White overcall on only a 5-card suit. Then there is his opening lead to consider. Your opponents bid and raised a suit (hearts) and didn't lead it. Your opponents also have a second 8-card fit, spades - they didn't lead that either. So what is the ♣8 lead? Seems like shortness, doesn't it? The poor declarer clearly wasn't at his sharpest – after this tough 6-session (3-day) pair event. He played the ♦A (RHO showing out) and then tried to play four rounds of ♣ and discard a ♥ before the opponents could ruff in and cash their tricks.

RHO shifts to a low ♠. You now have to guess the ♠ suit in order to make your contract. Declarer played the ♠J.

7: ♠x J Q x (-3)8: ♠x x A x (-4)9: ♥x Q K x (-5)

Down One!

Did you do better than our many time National Champion? If you guessed the ♦ then you get to play four rounds of ♣ and discard a ♥. After that you get to try to guess the ♠ to make either 4♦ or 5♦ -- either way, a very good result!

Here are all the hands. ♠ 1073 ♥ 974 ♦ A74 ♣ QJ95

The moral of the story is that bridge is a very hard game. Even the best struggle with making use of all the information that is given to them during the auction. Keep working hard and keep thinking about all the inferences that are available to you!

Auction is 1♣-P-1NT-2♠-3♠-P-3NT-P-P-P You hear North announce a very strong hand and you lead the ♠K against the 3NT contract. Partner plays the 8 and declarer the 3. Do you have any idea how to defeat the contract? Your methods are that partner has to drop an honour on the lead of the King or give count, so he has a doubleton. If declarer has the ♣A he has his contract, so you must give partner that card. Any idea? If you play a ♦, declarer will knock out the ♣A and then take the ♥ finesse for his contract. If you play a ♥ and declarer thinks you have the ♣A, he will rise with the ♥A so partner cannot clear ♠s while you still have the ♣A. He will then play the ♣K and be very unhappy when partner wins and clears ♠s. He has only eight tricks and you will win the ♥K and set the contract.

IDEA: try to imagine how declarer may have a problem. Here the only chance was to swindle declarer and lead him in the wrong direction.

Barnet Shenkin's Ideas about Logical Thinking

Jim and I have just returned from the Washington, D.C. Summer NABC's, which also included the Youth NABC's, and it was really terrific. We had a great time playing lots of bridge, including participating in two national events. We just missed qualifying for the second day in both

of them, but being able to participate and be competitive was satisfying to us. The experience of a National tournament is really special. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. Besides all of the bridge, you can enjoy good entertainment, excellent guided tours, a great selection of different restaurants, and meeting friendly bridge players from all over the country. Lots of Sarasota people were there, and many did quite well. Congratulations to Roger Johnson and Jay Whipple for their performances in the 0-5000 Mini-Spingolds. Roger's team made it to the semi-finals before losing to Jay's team, who went on to win the event. In the Youth NABC's, two of our Florida players were spectacular. Jourdain Patchett, playing with Jesse Stern, won both the National Pairs event and the National Team event. Congratulations, Jourdain and Jesse, great job! Our wonderful caddies, Asya and Nikita Ladyshensky, came in second in the Thursday Swiss Teams, and competed well in the rest of the events. Good work. We are proud of you! As we move into the fall, we are looking forward to implementing a Youth School Bridge program, so that next year hopefully we will have more new players to participate in these Youth events. It was really a kick to see all of these young people playing bridge and having such a great time!

BRIDGE IN SCHOOLS Bringing bridge education to younger students in the Sarasota/Bradenton

area has long been a project in which Unit 102 has worked to focus its

expertise and funds. A committee of three, Dean Cohler, Gloria Silverman

Bart, and Carol Krug, have contacted both public and private schools to

assess possible student participation.

Three public middle schools have indicated interest in the program, along

with several private schools which are enthusiastic about the project.

The committee has met with all of the interested schools during August and

hope to have the program operating by this fall. Unit member instructors will

be enlisted as teachers, working with volunteer teachers' assistants.

Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact Dean Cohler

at (941) 926-1720.

CONGRATULATIONSCongratulations to Susan and Michael Gilbert for reaching the rank of Emerald

Life Master (7500 masterpoints). Can Platinum or Grand be far behind?

The first week in August I had shoulder surgery on my right shoulder( in Miami). Now I am on the mend. Perhaps this will give me time to get caught up on all the projects that one can do with one hand..since I am right handed. Well, at least I can play bridge.. Unit 128 is recruiting folks that want to help. As you know, our District is hosting the Fall Nationals, in Orlando, in November 2010. There is so much to do, and we need help. We can't pay, but we sure need folks to pitch in and volunteer. We will need folks to hand out registration gifts and folks to hand out section top prizes. We can use help with the I/N program. In short we need anyone with a good, friendly attitude. We want our "novice events" to be the kind of experience that will be talked about for the next 5 years. We could also use your help in locating businesses or individuals that would like to make one day or one event special by financially sponsoring an event, side game or day. It can be named after someone who is celebrating something, deserves a pat on the back, a business or in memory of someone who is no longer with us. Each day there will be a listing in the daily bulletin that will be seen on-line and distributed to all the players who attend. We could also use your help in helping us select some of the entertainment that will be offered...Anyone have some good ideas? Many of you have attended other NABCs. What entertainment or hospitality did you enjoy most? Why? As you know, we have established certain standards for hospitality at our Unit 128 sponsored REGIONALS, they include FREE Coffee and FREE O.J., our Thurs dinner and subsidized sandwiches and hot dogs on Sunday, Pizza and desserts on other nites... Want us to change or supplement anything? Like it exactly the way it is? Have any constructive suggestions? IF so, please let me know... See you at the Regionals…

The Unit 128 Board of Governors met on May 1, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66, site of the 2009 Southeasterns Regional. All but one board member attended. All staff attended. Treasurer Marshall Hall presented the balance sheet through 4-30-09. In response to a board member's question, Marshall replied that interest rates on our certificates of deposit are lower than what we would like. Jayne Thomas gave her executive manager's report. The Southeasterns were up 11% through Friday afternoon's attendance. Naples, Daytona Beach and Manatee were all profitable. The Hyatt staff at the Southeasterns have been great, although prices are probably going to prevent our having a decent profit. The room block at PGA is down so far, only having achieved 64% at last count. A motion was made, seconded and passed that adequate playing space, parking, lighting, orange juice and coffee, and section tops be required for all sectionals. This motion was amended to include adequate hospitality. A further amendment specified that failure to comply with these requirements may result in the loss of the sectional owner's sanction. The motion passed by a vote of six to five. President Overby wished to vote against the motion, but the secretary expressed the opinion that the president only votes to break a tie. A second motion made, seconded and passed stated that we can and should remind clubs that they can request section top prizes from the unit at the unit's cost. District Director Shirley Seals requested that we read her report in the Sunshine Bridge News. Since writing that report, she has been appointed to the STaC Committee. A pressing issue for that committee is club directors who play in STaC games. Also, emails that include hand records are available for anyone who has access to a club's email account. Wilson Day made a motion that

we express our opinion to the committee that playing directors in STaC games not be allowed except under emergency situations. Betty Sandifer seconded the motion and it carried. Shirley reported that the Tournament Committee of the district has approved the 2010 and 2011 calendars. Wilson Day brought up the rule prohibiting a club within a 30-mile radius of a regional to hold any augmented masterpoint game (triple point games, championship games). Wilson made a motion that the Sunshine Bridge News not allow promoting of any events in conflict with nearby district regionals. Marshall Hall seconded the motion and it carried. Betty Sandifer moved that Unit 128 include a map in all tournament ads, Marshall Hall seconded the motion, and the motion carried. OLD BUSINESS: President Overby brought up the subject of electronic scorepads. We do not want to buy them and then need to pay for updates a year later. We must remember to purchase (or have included with our purchase) two servers. Transporting is expected to be a big problem, including wear and tear on the individual scorers at each table. Wilson Day reported that deluxe carrying cases should protect the pads from excessive wear and tear. Harriet Morris moved that we table this discussion until our November board meeting. This motion was seconded by Betty Sandifer and carried. The committee to establish priorities for tournament directors has not met, has no report and does not expect its work to accomplish anything. NEW BUSINESS President Overby asked us to consider our role in junior funding for future Youth

NABCs. The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) allows a tax deduction for contributors. This is a donor-advised fund. The district has 22 applicants (about four from Unit 128). Entry fees are $45 per child, plus the up-to-$500 for each of the 22 applicants. This would bankrupt the fund (and in fact the fund does not have enough to cover $500 per applicant plus the entry fees). Wilson Day moved that Unit 128 completely separate itself from the community foundation. Our sole relationship should be giving funds. This motion died without a second. Wilson then moved that Unit 128 give up to $1000 to the foundation. This also died without a

second. Wilson then moved that Unit 128 will not contribute any further funds until we establish criteria. Shirley Seals seconded this motion. The motion failed. Jayne Thomas reported that she is looking, so far unsuccessfully, to purchase bridge tables. Cards and bid boxes will be replaced at PGA. Jayne reported that she will be reconsidering our arrangement with the book dealer. Jayne has the authority of the board to cancel our arrangement with the book dealer. Respectfully submitted,Muriel Altus, Secretary
