Gift Ideas for Book Lovers 13 ISSUE Nov 2016- Jan 2017 By Sam Snodgrass, Greenwich and North Fairfield Branch Librarian As the weather changes from summer to autumn to winter, inevitably we start gearing up for holiday shopping. I’m sure that when you think about holiday shopping, the library isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, if there’s one thing we know it’s avid readers, and there’s no greater gift for them than a book, reading accessory, or book-themed present. Totes are a great gift for book lovers. There’s no better way to carry your books to and from the library than a sturdy and stylish canvas bag. Not enough hands to carry home all the books you want to read? Grab your handy book tote! One of my favorite tools out there for reading is the compact rechargeable reading light. Modern models have a nearly endless battery life, recharge using a USB cord, and can throw an excess of light across your pages as you get swept up in a good story late into the night. Don’t burn the midnight oil; get a reading light! Do you know someone who hates lugging heavy books to and from the library so much so that even a tote won’t ease their frustrations? Do you have a friend or a loved one who thinks paper is old news in this paperless world? The answer to your gift-giving woes is an eReader. It’s a great resource for many reasons, top among them being new books can be acquired without leaving your home (Internet connection needed). The library offers an extensive electronic library, and you won’t need a book light since most screens are backlit to accommodate nighttime use. On August 22nd, the Huron County Community Library’s Wakeman location celebrated the achievements of its 2016 graduates of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Nine children received their certificates and celebrated with an ice cream social and walk along the StoryBook Trail at Dalton Park Preserve in Wakeman.

This free program challenges parents to read 1,000 books with their child before they enter Kindergarten. The concept is simple - the rewards are priceless. And it’s not as hard as you may think.

Research shows that reading to young

children boosts language skills, promotes academic excellence, and enriches family and caregiver bonds. It’s never too early or too late to start. Just stop in any Huron County Community Library location and register. Participants receive a reading log. Every 100 books read is a milestone that is rewarded. Simply bring the log back in and the child will receive a reward and their new log. Upon completion of the program, the child will receive a certificate and will be acknowledged with a party.

Interested in signing up? Contact your local branch for more information on this valuable opportunity!

We have all experienced it - the emotional roller coaster that is finishing a good book or series. We are left standing there. Waiting. Wanting more. Overcome with longing. Oh, the painful existence of a bookworm. So now that you have finished a great book or series, what’s next? Where to go? What to do? That’s where the library comes in!

Reader’s Advisory is one of the favorite parts of my job. Finding the right book or author for someone is a journey. If you are looking for a “read-alike” or simply have run out of options, we can help.

By asking questions and getting to know what you like to read and why, our staff can find the perfect (we hope!) book for you to read next. There are great resources to help aid us on this journey: Novelist, Goodreads, and Fantastic Fiction to name a few.

Novelist is simple and easy to use. Just visit our website and access the catalog. You’ll find Novelist on the front page. (Don’t forget

your library card; you’ll need it.) You can search by title, series, or author. Novelist will present you with choices based on the kinds of books you’ve enjoyed in the past along with an explanation about why these picks would be good for you. Not a fan of digital guidance? Let our staff help!

You may be wondering, “How can you find me something anywhere near as good as Game of Thrones. It’s impossible!” Don’t fret - through magic and a little investigation,

we can. And Reader’s Advisory is not just about books. We can help you find your next favorite TV series or movie too.

Reader’s Advisory is about connecting to our community. The Huron County Community Library believes that “Libraries Transform,” and we strive to provide excellent customer service, a diverse collection, and fun programming.

Stop in and pick the brain of our knowledgeable staff to discover your next favorite read or show. Try and stump us, and we’ll see what great picks we can find.

At the Fair

The Huron County Community Library hit the Huron County Fair in August with fun giveaways and new information. Staff from all of our locations manned the booth to talk to parents, kids, and everyone in between!

This year our booth focused on the Libraries Transform theme. We asked our communities and storytime groups to tell us why they love their library, and we got some great answers. People stopping by our booth to meet staff even got to add their “Because” statements to our wall. By the end of the fair, the booth was plastered with them!

We loved hearing what you had to say! Keep sharing your library stories, successes, and “Because” statements with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. #LibrariesTransform #HCCL

HCCL for the Holidays

The year 2016 will be marked in the annals of the Huron County Community Library as a year of physical change, in both our buildings and in personnel. Our Willard location completed a major renovation to the interior of the library and a facelift to our Myrtle Street entrance along with the construction of a much needed Annex across the street. We thanked Gail Cummings and Don Gallion for their years of dedicated service and wished them all the best in their retirement in December of 2015.

We look forward to 2017 being the beginning of a new service model that will be even more patron-centered by intentionally going out to our communities delivering library services to the places where people gather, work and live.

Our Strategic Plan for 2017-2021 was developed from the responses we gleaned from our focus group meetings and nationwide library best practices. Among the things we heard are the library hours need to be adjusted to accommodate people’s schedules; staff need to break away from the library and their comfort zones; our marketing needs supplemented; and there should be an emphasis on current technology.

Our new service model will focus on developing the following areas to better serve our patrons and to attract new people to our collections and services:1. Staff – provide capable and dedicated staff who efficiently deliver patron-centered services2. Resources – provide relevant, current, and popular material and devices to promote lifelong learning3. Marketing – provide personalized

information to learn about programs, services, and collections available at the library through traditional and social media4. Maintenance – provide buildings and create environments that are clean, safe and well

maintained5. Outreach – provide library collections and services that reach beyond the brick and mortar libraries in the communities we serve

While 2016 was a year of physical change, 2017 will be a year of philosophical change – rethinking the way we deliver library services to the people in Huron County.

On behalf of the Huron County Community Library staff and the Board of Trustees, I wish you a new year full of positive change and happiness!

Adults at Willard, and children and adults in Wakeman will be using a BINGO card format for Winter Reading. Check out the calendar at each location to see what is planned.

Children at Willard will be enjoying, “A Blizzard of Books!” Minion Monday, Wild and Wacky Wednesday, and Frozen Friday are just a few of the fun things planned. With the weird, wild, and wacky Willard winter that is predicted, kids are sure to need an outlet for that pent up energy! Bring them to the library, where we have been…”kid tested, mother approved!”

When the snow starts falling, don’t get stuck inside without a book to curl up with. Head to the library and find books, movies, video games and more to keep your family entertained. Join us for Winter Reading, escape the winter blues, and explore the library!

I began working in my high school library typing cards for the card catalogue. Through the years, I volunteered at several school libraries and became an employee of the Dorcas Carey Public Library. Four years ago I began working here at Willard after 13 years as a teacher’s aide.

My favorite thing about working here is assisting with adult programming - especially the craft programs. I love helping people explore their creativity and connecting it to the library.

In my spare time, I enjoy quilting, flower gardening, following Nascar, and of course reading!

Year in ReviewAs we reflect back on 2016, it’s been a year of changes, new annual events, and more. This year was all about Libraries Transforming.

Did you catch any of these free events? Best-selling author, Linda Castillo visited our Willard and Wakeman locations. We embarked on a new annual event - Mind, Body, and Sole - that included a 5K. And we opened a StoryBook Trail at Dalton Park. The kids learned and climbed at Touch-a-Truck, and danced to magic and music with The Spoon Man and Nate the Magician. Our Greenwich Storytime group planted a garden and made fresh pizza to celebrate.

2016 isn’t over yet; don’t miss out on Spooktacular fun, live Penguins, and so much more still to come at your library.

We’re even more excited about what 2017 has to offer. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and check out our new and improved website.
