G.I.S SMIT FAIR
Continued from page 1
The infant school also participated in the fair; children in reception made garbage trucks and
a Class 1 pupil invented a machine that renews books. A group in Class 5 made a plastic
vacuum cleaner that actually worked and that earned them a gold award.
Some of the Senior School students also took part in the fair; a group made air coolers.
Another group, turned milk into plastic and that made them win a gold award.
According to Mrs. Afua Okyere-Sefa, the Junior School Science Coordinator, the SMIT
Fair was to encourage collaboration, critical thinking and creativity amongst the students.
The event was crowned on the 8th of March, 2019 with an exhibition where
students from other schools were invited to appreciate the students’ inventions. Pupils
from the Junior School went to the Senior School for a joint exhibition. Subsequently, there
was an assembly to acknowledge and award the winners of the fair. Dr. Mary Ashun, the
principal of the school, gave a speech and presented the awards. She mentioned that as a
child, she never experienced a Science Fair.

Junior School Play - Ananse, the Clever Spider
On Friday 15th
March, 2019, the annual
drama production took place in the
Junior School Assembly Hall. The focus
was on Anansi and the play was entitled,
‘Anansi, the Clever Spider’. The play is
a Ghanaian folktale known by many
people. It was directed by Mrs Dora
Baah, and it was acted in five (5) scenes,
interspersed with dancing and recorder
ensemble.
The story tells of how Anansi overcame
certain challenges in order to prove to his wife and Nyankropon that he was the one who brought
stories into the world. The first scene talked about how Nyankropon challenged Anansi to capture a
hornet, a python, a leopard and bad tempered dwarf. The rest of the four scenes talked about how
Anansi craftily captured all the animals one by one. Though he didn’t want to accept it, he needed
help from his wife, Osa.
After several weeks of rehearsals, the final rehearsal took place the day before the fantastic drama
production. On that day, all of the pupils taking part in the production brought their beautiful outfits
except for the animals because their costumes were provided by the director. All the Osas and Nsias
brought their kaba and slits; those who played the role of Ansansi brought African print tops and
trousers; the Mmotias brought black leggings, black tops and African cloths, and the Nyankropons
brought long white dresses.
At exactly 4:50pm, the actors and actresses were called to Class 3 Mansonia to change; some went to
Class 3 Iroko for make-up and face painting. At exactly 6:00pm, the drama production began. For the
opening act, there was a recorder ensemble performed by some Year 5 Euptelea pupils. It was
followed by the traditional dance and a welcome address was given by Mrs. Dora Baah, the
Executive Director. After that, the main production began. The closing remarks were given by Ms.
Nadia Bruce-Muller, the Junior School Vice-Principal.
The Drama Club was as usual, oversubscribed so to ensure that everyone was part, the director
carefully made sure that each and every one had a part to play, from the shortest part to the longest
part. Each role was shared by two or three people. Anansi’s role was shared by four different people
namely: Kailyn Kwarteng, Ekow Enti, Marigold Ofori-Atta and Jaden Poku.
NKOMO PA TERM 2 2018/19
One could easily tell that the most interesting scene for the audience was when Anansi thought for
himself and captured Harica because the whole play was basically about Osa telling Anansi to think
and when he finally thought and captured Harica by himself, everyone was surprised.
The play went smoothly and ended on schedule which left the audience still sitting glued to their
seats, wanting more. The play was a success.

P.T.A Bazaar
On Saturday, 16th February 2019 at Ghana
International School, the parents, teachers and
students of G.I.S participated in a bazaar on the
Junior School premises. The fundamental aim of
the bazaar was to raise funds for the
Rheumatology Initiative.
The events that took place were epic, ranging
from a football tournament to a karaoke. Multiple
children showered stalls with stacks of cedis
buying things from stationary to kebab.
At the gate, students, staff, parents and visitors
had to pay for tickets before they were allowed to
enter. Most of the activities were accessed with
coupons which were given in exchange for
money.
There were Jams for the Years 5 and 6 pupils while the Year 4 and 3 children ran to the spa, the fashion
show and the food stalls.
“It was a nice occasion, and I enjoyed the fact that we got to have fun whether we were parents or
children,” said a parent.
With all the memories made, the bazaar was the best so far.

G.I.S ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
The month long ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
2019, kicked off on 1st February 2019. All staff
and students were excited to set the ball rolling.
The purpose of the campaign was to create
awareness on bullying and how the whole school
could work together to eradicate it.
The campaign was launched by the Infant, Junior
and Secondary sections. It was officially
announced at their respective assemblies. The
Secondary section had an action packed Anti-
Bullying assembly on Friday, 8th February 2019.
The Junior School had a special assembly which
addressed the issue of bullying and the Infant
School continued to address the importance of
kindness at assembly.
As part of the campaign, Champions were selected from all the sections to help facilitate activities
lined up for the month of February and to help support the counsellors by being the eyes and ears
during break time and in the classrooms. They were to be alert to any bullying incidents and refer to
the counsellor or vice-principals when it happened. They met twice during the campaign with other
Champions to discuss ways to increase awareness.
In the junior school, students and staff used the first two periods of the day to champion the cause.
Students went to their classrooms to drop their school bags and picked up their posters made during
PSHE/Art class and then returned to the field (in lines) with their teachers to the Assembly Hall.
Selected music about kindness was played.
There was an announcement of the ANTI-BULLYING PEP RALLY by Ms. Nadia Bruce-Muller and
students in their respective classes with their teachers and junior teachers marched from the Assembly
Hall, around the pitch, to the VP’s Block, through the corridor and then returned to the assembly hall.
Mr. Kwame Mensah, the Year 6 Lotus teacher, led a chant for students to respond while they marched.
The rally was ended with a speech by Mrs. Dora Baah and pupils returned to their classrooms with
their teachers and junior teachers.

ALL ABOUT BULLYING
What is bullying?
Bullying is the use of force or threats to intimidate or aggressively dominate others.
The behavior is often repeated and habitual.
It is an imbalance of social or physical power.
Behaviors used to assert such domination can include verbal harassment or threats,
physical assault or coercion, and such acts may be directed repeatedly towards particular
targets.
Rationalizations of such behaviours sometimes include differences of social class, race,
religion, gender, appearance, behaviour, body language, personality, reputation, strength,
size or ability.
If bullying is done by a group, it is called mobbing.
What is not bullying?
Bullying is not a one off behaviour or act e.g. conflict, argument, etc.
How to stop/avoid bullying?
Remaining calm, supportive, and reassuring the youth that they are not to blame for their
victimization can go a long way to creating a climate that helps the victim of bullying feel
comfortable enough to talk about it.
The parent should try to gain details about the circumstances of his or her child’s bullying
and who is involved and teach the child how to respond to being bullied assertively,
without getting upset.
The kid may also find it helpful to stay with other students and a teacher so the bully has
less opportunity to engage in the behavior.
Bystanders to bullying can help discourage bullying behavior by asking other people who
are witnessing the bullying how they feel about what they have seen and whether they feel
the behavior is right or wrong.
The group of bystanders can decide individually or as a group to positively influence the
situation by expressing their disapproval toward the bully and/or notifying people in
authority, like teachers, counselors, or administrators at school.
Bystanders to bullying can also discourage the behavior by encouraging the victim to ask
for help from peers and authority figures.
Where does it happen?
Bullying can occur in nearly any part in or around the school building, although it may occur
more frequently during;
Physical education classes
Activities such as break times.
NKOMO PA TERM 2 2018/19
school hallway
bathrooms,
school buses and while waiting for buses
in classes that require group work
Consequences?
Children who are bullied often show physical or emotional signs, such as:
being afraid to attend school
complaining of headaches or a loss of appetite
a lack of interest in school activities and spending time with friends or family
having an overall sense of sadness.
Different roles players:
Bully: a person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as
vulnerable.
Victim: a person harmed, injured, or affected by bullying action.
Bystander: those who witness it but are neither the primary bully nor the victim.
Reinforcers: strengthen or support bullying actions by laughing, clapping etc
Outsider: a person who is not part of bullying
Defender: a person who defends a victim

G.I.S 2019 World Book Day The 22
nd World Book Day was celebrated on
Friday, 29th March 2019 at the junior school. The day was started with an exciting assembly with students and the teachers participating. The Principal, Dr. Mary Ashun, was there to read to the pupils. Assembly started at 7:45 am and there were two MCs both from Class 6 Lotus to coordinate it. They first welcomed the principal, vice-principal, teachers, students and junior teachers. After that, they invited the Junior School vice-principal, Ms. Nadia
Bruce- Muller on stage to give a short speech. Next, the year threes, who were learning about non-fiction, talked about the features of a non-fiction and what should be included if one wanted to write a non-fiction. They also designed cardboards to match up with the title. After that, all class threes got invited on stage for a fashion show to display their beautiful character costumes. Next were the class fours, their show was about fantasy stories and they read out a story written by one of them. They also told the school, the features of a fantasy story also known as a fiction story. The class fours also had a fashion show; they were invited on stage by Ms. Sandra Clottey. They came one by one and did a 360 degree turn in the middle of the stage and the photographers took pictures of them. After the year fours, the year fives were invited on stage. They gave the school a show about the difference between a myth and a legend; they talked about the difference and even got two legends and myths to share with everyone. They crowned it with a fashion show. Even though the Year 6 pupils didn’t have a show, they still did the fashion show and they went on stage in pairs. The MCs invited Dr. Mary Ashun on stage to talk about books in general as well as the ones she had written. She also reminded students that they shouldn’t read in the dark since it is very bad to their eye sights. She read one of her books, “Stubborn Kwame”, to the whole Junior School. Finally, the MCs invited Class 4 Sequoia for a book character day song; everyone in the Junior School sang the song and it got very loud indeed. There were books for sale at every price, and there was popcorn and lemonade on sale. By: Qi Wang Class 5 Euptelea

G.I.S BOOK DRIVE
On Thursday, 28th
March 2019, Ghana International School,
junior section, donated story books to the Focos Orthopaedic
Hospital and the Pom-pom Library. This took place at the
Senior School Assembly Hall.
Two hundred of the books were donated to the Focos
Orthopaedic Hospital and four hundred were donated to the
Pom-pom Library situated inside the West Hills Mall-Weija.
The donation was led by Ms. Nadia Bruce-Muller, the Junior
School Vice-Principal.
The representatives from the Focos Orthopaedic Hospital were not present as of the time of the
handing over of the books. The representatives of the Pom-pom Library, led by the ambassador of
the library, Ms. Ohemaa Kyei-Mensah, were there to receive the books. There was a news crew
from Joy News to cover the event and to interview the representatives and vice-principal.
Ms. Ohemaa Kyei-Mensah stated in her speech, “The Pom-pom library was established because
there were no public libraries in that neighborhood, and most children in that area can’t even afford
the money, to buy a book. This library is to motivate children of all ages, to read interesting things
about the world and everything around them. But to make this happen, we needed your help by
donating slightly used books that you think other people will enjoy. By that, you help children to
read and learn new things.”
The event ended with students returning to the Junior School in their year groups.

We started the day with an assembly where we watched an Ancient Greek dance and a play from Aesop’s fables. Next, we had our feast. There were bread, grapes, grape juice, cheese, butter, lemonade and olives which are different types of food enjoyed in Greece.
Afterwards, we took a group picture, and then we had the Olympic Games, which were held in honour of Zeus. We participated in many sports including javelin, discus` throw, sprints and other fun activities. Later we played some Greek board games. WE HAD FUN! Nadine Osei-Owusu, Class 3 Iroko A DAY BEING AN ANCIENT GREEK
Ancient Greece Day was fun.
We dressed up as Greeks. One of our friends dressed up as a Greek god called Zeus, who always
started the Greek Olympics. We also played Olympic Games. I learnt that in Greece, women were
not allowed to compete in races. It was really fun; we did a race between the other houses.
We played a ball game, where we threw the ball and one of our friends had to catch it.
We ate lovely foods such as grapes, bread and cheese, and we had some other drinks like lemon and
mango juice.
I felt like I was in heaven; it was a wonderful experience.

3 Jacaranda Ancient Greece Day Ancient Greece Day was fun. The event took place in the assembly hall of the Junior School. We all learnt their culture, their food and the types of clothes they wore. Also in class, our teacher taught us a bit about Ancient Greece. I think the purpose of Ancient Greece Day was to express our feelings on how we felt Ancient Greece Day was like. When we went there, we had a lot of fun. We played games like the Olympic Games and we divided ourselves into four City States depending on our houses. On that day, we were introduced to their types of food including grapes, grape juice, bread and some popcorn. I do not really think popcorn was part of their regional food but we still ate it for fun. By: Sesinam Ahiabu Class 3 Mansonia

YEAR 5 CHINA DAY On Thursday, 28th March 2019, the pupils of Year 5
in Ghana International School celebrated China Day
by wearing different Chinese costumes and having
various activities happening in the classroom and
I.C.T lab. The event happened on the premises of
G.I.S specifically, in the four Year 5 classrooms.
To begin with, the Year 5 pupils started filing in,
dressed in their beautiful and colourful Chinese
costumes. Soon, various activities began; the pupils
had 20 minutes in each class for different activities. In Class 5 Euptelea, the activity that took place was the
Chinese lantern making. In Class 5 Meranti, the activity that took place was Chinese relaxation and Chinese fan
making. In Class 5 Willow, the activity that took place was watching a Chinese film and in Class 5 Oak, there
was Chinese hat making.
In Class 5 Euptelea, where the activity of the Chinese lantern making took place, the Year 5 class that was there
watched a short video on how to make a Chinese lantern using paper. It took a lot of focus and concentration to
make it look perfect. They had to improvise for they didn’t have some of the materials. It was spectacular.
Next, in the I.C.T lab, the activity of the Chinese relaxation and fan making took place. It was very calm and cool
as the lights were turned off and pupils tried to copy every move from the video they were watching. It really
helped to release tension and stress. After that, in the same class, pupils made a Chinese fan out of paper. When
some people tried it, they realized it worked to prevent heat like a real fan. Pupils just had to fold the paper in and
out.
Thirdly, the next class the pupils went to was Class 5 Willow. In that class, they watched a part one of a movie
titled, ‘Ah Boy’. It was very interesting and sad. Some children felt like crying. There was so much sadness in it.
The voice was in Chinese but the words were written in English. It was about a poor boy that was very smart and
tried to make ends meet but kept getting bullied.
Next, the pupils went to Class 5 Oak. In that class, they learnt how to make a Chinese hat that farmers and
fishermen in China wear to protect their faces from the sun. They had to improvise because they didn’t have the
right material to make the hat the same way, so they used paper. It was very easy to do as they just folded a
circular paper into quarters. Then they cut out one quarter to the middle and then folded it and adjusted to fit their
heads and glued it. Lastly, they poked holes through the hat and put a string through it.
After the activities, there was a Chinese feast. At that time, the Vice-Principal, Ms. Nadia Bruce-Muller, came to
see how things were going and to taste the food. The food was taken class by class so that there would be no
chaos. The food was from a Chinese restaurant called Regal Restaurant. It was fried rice with chicken vegetable
sauce, spring rolls and shito; it was delicious.
To crown it all after lunch break, all the Class 5 pupils gathered around the assembly hall for the closing activity.
A Chinese woman came to talk to them about China. It was very interactive and interesting to learn about China.
Some children learnt that China was bordered by countries such as India, South and North Korea. Eventually, the
program came to a close with a fashion show for children to showcase their beautiful costumes. Then they went to
their classes to have a little snack.

YEAR FIVE BEACH TRIP
On Friday, 15th
March 2019,
the Year 5 pupils, teachers,
junior teachers and DSAs went
on a trip to Laboma beach to
learn about the coasts. The bus
took off at 8.30am and we
arrived at 9.00am. Class 5
Euptelea and Oak went in the
G.I.S bus while Class 5
Meranti and Willow went in
the V.I.P bus.
When we arrived, we looked around and explored the place then we were sorted into our groups. Group 5 had to
be split up because their patron wasn’t there.
Then we went into our groups. After that, we walked around and the teachers asked questions. We did activities
like popping a balloon with our tummies. Then when we got back in our groups, we had to fill an evaluation
sheet. Then we went to the playground to play.
A while later, the teachers called us to go back to the bus, but Class 5 Meranti and Willow’s bus wasn’t there so
they had to wait for a long time at the place where the bus was supposed to be.
In the end, the VIP bus didn’t come so they had to take the small bus and the pupils who couldn’t fit went into the
G.I.S bus.
When we got back to school, we went to our classrooms then we went for lunch.

ALL ABOUT THE CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY
The Chinese New Year Day is a festival celebrated at
the beginning of the New Year on the Chinese calendar.
The Chinese New Year or the Spring festival, which
marks the end of the winter and the beginning of Spring,
is China's most important festival and holiday time
(about 15 days).
This year, 2019, is the year of the pig and it signifies the year of love, money, luck, and health.
The celebration is usually characterised by four main activities namely:
Chinese New Year decorations: Red is the main colour of the celebrations because it is seen as a lucky
colour. It is also used because red is believed to be an auspicious colour. Red lanterns and red couplets
are hanged around the streets. Doors are also decorated with red pictures depicting images of
prosperity.
Eating together: There is a reunion dinner on the eve of the New Year. This dinner is believed to be the
most important meal of the year.
Lighting of fire crackers and fire masks to scare off evil spirits
Giving of red envelopes: Red envelopes with money are given out to children. This money is supposed to
help transfer fortune from the elders to the kids. The red envelopes are also believed to bring good luck. “xin nian kuai le” “Happy New Year"

How the Eagle became bald
The Eagle was horrible, even the gods didn’t like him.
He had the habit of circling a pack or family and
swooping down to eat them. In fact, the whole forest
despised him. Ananse, the cunning and cheeky spider,
cooked up a plan to get back at Eagle. Ananse knew that
Eagle was proud of his long, thick hair and thought out loud, “What if I shave it in some way?”
At that moment, Ananse knew that he needed help.
He climbed up the tree to the big Dodo bird and asked if she could do him a favour. “Oh! Ananse,
we really do need to get back at that troublesome Eagle!” the Dodo bird announced and agreed to
the plan. The day of the plan neared and soon, all the animal kingdom knew about it apart from
Eagle. Ananse had sleepless and endless nights waiting for dawn to break on that day. Finally, it
was time to put the one and only Ananse’s plan into action. He made his journey up the tall tree
where the Dodo bird’s nest lay to find her sitting up ready to go.
Ananse took out a scissors and sat on the Dodo bird’s back. The two flew silently above the
ground circling, waiting for Eagle as if he was their prey. “Where could he be? Eagle is never late
for early morning breakfast!” Ananse exclaimed. Meanwhile, back deep in the forest, the rabbits
could hold the secret in no longer and called for Eagle. The cheeky rabbits told him all about
Ananse’s plan. Eagle who was not gullible, did not believe the little animals and so he too took off
high into the bright blue sky. The Eagle circled a lonely fox while Ananse cut off the Eagle’s
glorious hair. Strand by strand it all came off.
The two tricksters flew down and waited with the gods and other animals that had gathered.
When Eagle finally swooped down, the whole crowd laughed and even the gods laughed too.
Eagle was confused and thought everyone was admiring him so he started striking poses. “You’ve
been tricked!” the whole forest cried and burst into even more laughter. Ananse’s plan had
worked; he had succeeded and till today, the Eagle still has a bald head.

HOW EARTH CAME TO BE Long, long, long ago, up in space, there lived two twins; one
was a boy and the other a girl. They were the children of the
king and queen of the gods. They were bored and started
playing with a lump of Play-doh.
The two of them argued over what they should make. They
finally decided to make a ball. As they were adding the
finishing touches, the brother, whose name was Vulcan, used
his powers to heat their creation. “Stop!” shrieked his sister
Aura. “You’ll crack it!”
But Vulcan ignored her. Aura had to intervene, so she sprayed
water and blew cold air onto the Play-doh.
The more Vulcan heated it, the more Aura cooled it down, until their father came in to split them apart.
“You two are old enough to know not to fight over something as silly as this!” he exclaimed. “Go to
your rooms instantly.”
As the twins skulked away, their father picked up the sphere and muttered, “Such junk!” He chucked it
away and didn’t notice that the ball was floating. That is the way the earth came to be.
The places where Aura had blown and rained on too hard are the seas, the Polar Regions, rivers and
lakes. The places Vulcan had scorched badly are the deserts and the magma in the core of the earth. The
grasslands and countries are where their efforts were equally balanced.

Sarnia and the rain god Over two hundred years ago, in the land of Carina, lived Sarnia. She was
a woman who worked day and night to survive. Carina was a country
where there was no water source except the river, so there was a season
where there was drought and no water. For a whole year, there was
hardly any water so a lot of people died. Sarnia who was very thoughtful
of people was very angry.
She kindly asked the rain god, Pachytris, if he could lend them water. Pachytris who was very quick-
tempered obviously became very furious and bellowed, “No! I am not going to allow anyone to take
some of my water!” As a result, Sarnia wisely thought of another plan. One day, whilst she was walking
through the mystical forest, her sharp ears heard the sound of an excited chattering. In the wink of an eye,
an idea came to her. When she recognized they were fairies, she bent down to them and spoke to them in
her sweetest voice. Soon after, she told them about her plan; they agreed to execute it the next day.
The fairies were told by Sarnia to find the largest stick they could get. However, because they were very
light and the stick was so very heavy, they kept making noises and soon the fairies, Crimson, Avery,
Ruby and Kristine caught the attention of Pachytris and were soon squealing as the rain god was trying to
put them down his throat and gobble them up. As he was close to gobbling them up, down in the natural
world, Sarnia was still there waiting for them. But she soon realised that they were not coming. As she sat
quietly without making a single noise, her sharp ears heard squeals from the clouds and then she realised
that the fairies were in danger.
Scrambling around for something to throw up to the clouds, she finally found the sharpest stick and
aimed it at his belly. As she aimed for his belly, the sharp stick went right to his belly and suddenly he let
go of the fairies and he fell. There and then, rain started flowing from the sky and people came out and
started rejoicing. Since then, there has been green fields and clear water.
That is why there is rain today. As for Pachytris, he was no longer a god but a slave and the fairies and
Sarnia were rewarded for their good deeds. Sarnia was given the ability to help people and the fairies
were able to turn into anything they wanted as that was their wish. By: Kezia Opoku-Agyeman Class 5 Euptelea

MY AMAZING GRANDPA
This poem is about a person I wish I met
The fighter in war, my Grandpa George
My Dad showed me his medals and awards
His money, his trophies and his splendid boards
Oh I wished I met my grandpa George
I saw him on the news, some old photos and a forge
Oh how I wished I met my grandpa George
I went to his grave today at the blessed cemetery
And wished once again that I could see his penny

SPORTS
Hot, sunny, bright
So, so sweaty
Playing football
My T-shirt so wetty!
Rainy, stormy, cool
bouncing the ball
Scored a goal
after a call!
Cold, snowy, freezing
playing in the snow
doing some skiing
wearing a bow!
Windy, harmattan, hot
going for volleyball
In a bus
with my bud Jollyball!

FRIENDSHIP
Friendship Friendship nice and warm,
It grows bigger and bigger every day,
Every day we care and share,
Friends explore relationship and love.
Together love grows more with friends,
We stay together with love and care,
We laugh with laughter and happiness,
We learn together every day.
If you fall with a splash,
I will help you up,
That’s how friendships work,
Friendship works with helpful things,
Together we make a heart with love and care.
