the past, please support us again this year! This event is only possible because of you. Thank you so much in ad-vance for your talents

and generosity.

The bowls can be dropped off at the

Glory Hole.

It is almost time for the 2010 Empty Bowls. Empty Bowls is based on a national program to raise the awareness of hunger. Individuals pur-chase tickets and stand in line to receive soup and bread, experiencing a similar circumstance to what hungry people have to do everyday. Atten-dees also pick out a handmade bowl out of hundreds of bowls. As many might know, Empty Bowls is Glory Hole’s biggest annual fundraiser. This year’s Empty Bowls will take place on Sunday, April 25 and promises to be as wonderful as ever, with delicious soups donated by local businesses, as well as bread, cookies,

and other edibles. Also this year, please look forward to a shorter line to get in, wonder-ful musical entertain-

ment, and more.

Right now we are look-ing for bowls. All the amazing potters who have supported us in

On Friday, March 5, The Glory Hole will participate in the First Friday gallery Walk, featuring the Out of the Rain Exhibit. Out of the Rain is sponsored by the Juneau Homeless Coalition and con-tains photographs by Scot Al-len, Lance Caldwell, Marilyn Holmes, Doug Sturm, Scott Ciambor, Teri Tibbett, Ferdi-nand Lasinski, Suzi Lafferty, Mihael Blikshteyn, and Jan Fiscus. The event will take place from 5-7 pm, include dinner, and include live music

by Terry Tibbett and friends.

Note from the Director The Glory Hole's holiday season was wonderful and heartwarming. Thanks to the generosity, thoughtfulness and kindness of Juneau's community, faith-based organizations and individuals, everyone who requested a holiday food box, needed a coat, socks, hats or other warm clothing, or camping supplies received what they needed. More supplies, hygiene products, socks, warm clothing and food items for regular food boxes are

stored for distribution throughout the winter.

2009 was an interesting and exciting year, however, it is now my opinion that interesting and exciting is the nature of The Glory Hole. Several accomplishments could be noted from last year. We have gotten new ovens. We have successfully over-come several somewhat major disasters, such as a collapse of the ceiling, pipe issues, fall through of a major fundraiser. We have gotten into the world of writing grants, became involved in several new partnerships, such as the MASST and Job X pro-grams, set up regular counseling hours, started the Lunch and Learn program, brought light to the homeless issues in Juneau, raised our staff to a living wage level, were instrumental in set-ting up a cohesive assistance plan for sick homeless individuals, and started on the garden project. We have reduced the number of probation violations, criminal trespassing, and assault con-victions for our clients. We have provided several trainings to the staff on how to deal with our patrons better, and made a good dent in providing better food for our pa-trons for lunch and breakfast. With invaluable help of wonderful volunteers, we have repainted all of the shelter with donated paint and labor, completed the new bathrooms in the dorms. We have also kind of got-

ten a new kitchen, which is still a work in progress.

In 2010, we are looking forward to a new garden and will try to find funding for several major projects.

Please stay tuned and thank you very much again, for all the support.

Executive Director Mariya Lovishchuk gets help with grant writing from little Jack, youngest Glory Hole client of 2010.

Too bad Jack isn’t old enough to clean up the office.

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being

hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being

unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest

poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy

this kind of poverty.”

~ Mother Teresa

“Man may dismiss compassion from his

heart, but God never will.”

~ William Cowper

“What is tolerance? It is

the consequence of

humanity. We are all

formed of frailty and

error; let us pardon

reciprocally each other's

folly - that is the first law

of nature.”

~ Voltaire

~ The True happiness that Man has searched for since

the dawn of humanity, that is the inner gold that

awaits any person who holds compassionately the key

of anonymous generosity. Do something for your

fellow man, not for the gold, but for the love of Man,

and you shall truly have the gold. ~

“In separateness lies

the world’s great

misery, in compassion

lies the world’s true

strength.”

~ Buddha
