ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS Why did you chose Boston College?
The funding, research centers, and course offerings
I felt like my background and the ERME program really complemented each oth-er. I knew I was going into a quality program that would give me balanced perspectives and really useful skills, based on what my goals were.
Prestigious institution, program of study, and great location
Great reputation, great program in ERME, highly recommended by the sen-ior officials and educators in Singapore, BC gave me a scholarship, has well-known professors, and a students from all over the United States and other countries
ERME was one of the only programs that had an international component to educational research. I was interested in combining my background in in-ternational education with quantitative methods of educational research. Be-cause of the TIMSS and PIRLS projects, ERME seemed like the best option – and it was (from a totally unbiased perspective, of course)!
Social justice & the Lynch school was very organized, knowledgeable, and ap-proachable
I was first drawn by the fact that it emphasizes its vision on social justice – applying research results to address social issues as the overall goal, which is where I’m from and what I see myself stand in my career life. Therefore, I see myself fit into the program very well.
The school’s reputation and location play important roles in my decision making. Location is important for me, the com-munity and the city surrounding BC offer a lot of resources (academic, ca-reer, cultural, etc.) and I think that being able to access to it enriches my school/classroom learning experiences.
The program aligned with my interests & the people seemed nice when I visited.

ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS Why did you chose Boston College? continued
The ERME department at BC was a great fit for me. I thought ERME program of-fered the right balance of topics related to educational measurement, as-sessment and policy that tailors to my interest. Most other schools that have offered admissions to me were either too psychometrics focused or policy ori-ented.
Financial support for doctoral students is only matched by very few graduate schools of education and it relieved huge financial burden for me.
I have had an excellent experience as an undergrad here and was drawn by the prospect of earning a master’s degree in only on extra year
I like Boston, and BC seems to have the most comprehensive Education Re-search program of all schools in the state.
I wanted a mix of content in education research, so the combination of as-sessment, statistical methods, research design, and evaluation appealed to me.
The analytical approach to research offered by ERME, the teaching and re-search strengths of the Lynch faculty, the location of the campus
In addition to a good rank among colleges in the US, there are available oppor-tunities out there that can help you do what you want to do.
I was in the 5th Year Program- it helped me pay for school and ERME seemed like a very unique opportunity only offered at a few schools across the coun-try.
The program is very unique and im-portant in the field. The program is small and intensive.

ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS What was your first impression of ERME?
Welcoming
I felt really welcomed by the ERME de-partment the first time I visited. People went out of their way to help me figure out if ERME was a good fit for me. When I first arrived in the fall, I got the impres-sion that professors want to help stu-dents, and students want to help other students. It’s a supportive environment.
Interesting office layout
Dr. Ludlow comes off as very approach-able, down-to-earth while at the same time being hard working, ambitious and passionate about the field.
Initially a little dismayed that there were only 2 electives. However, greatly en-thused now by the breadth and depth of the core classes
I liked the collaborative environment among students and faculty. Prior to making my final decision, I’ve visited some other schools and many students in those programs were competing against each other to work with certain profes-sors or to get certain grants, and even on coursework grades. I tend to perform bet-ter in a collaborative and supportive setting and BC ERME was the right place.
Interesting people doing interesting work
My first impression of the ERME depart-ment is that the department is small and students and faculty actually know each other very well.
So far it seems like a well-structured program that will prepare me for a varie-ty of exciting opportunities.
Um… Is this a cult? Program candidates seemed so close-knit (not a bad thing at all)
Thought it was refreshing that it was so small and collegial.
An impressive group of researchers and educators at all stages from 1st year master’s students to professors.
All classes start in the afternoon/night.
Close-knit, helpful, friendly, nerdy (ha)
I loved the great mixture of profession-alism and fun that embodies the depart-ment. All of the professors and students were extremely friendly and helpful. I have learned a lot about research, re-search databases, and education in gen-eral.
Loved it!

ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS What do you like best about ERME?
I like the academic diversity of the program. While there are fundamentals that I expect to learn really well, I also feel I’m getting expo-sure to many related areas, which is im-portant for my growth both professionally and personally.
Nice professors and content-rich curriculum
Great professors who are willing to take time out to hear your thoughts and guide you ac-cordingly.
The community here at BC, and in ERME in particular, is very supportive and not competi-tive. I really like that ERME students partici-pate in all kinds of social and academic events together and study, work on papers, and get feedback from each other constantly. All the professors are also very accessible and welcome students at any time to discuss coursework, papers, research, etc.
There are several things. First, I always had great time/experiences in courses taught by ERME professors, they are wonderful teach-ers, willing to help students, and always availa-ble. Another thing I really like about ERME is that everything is coordinated and organized so well. The design of syllabus is very clear for me, and I always receive information regularly on job opportunities, internships, research opportunities, etc. I always know where and whom to seek support when I need. The pro-fessors and students here make me feel proud to be part of it.
That it really provides you the skills to study educational problems and more.
The advanced level courses
Opportunities to do real world research that makes a difference
I truly like the close-knit community setting that fosters collaborative working environ-ment.
I really appreciate the department’s willing-ness to provide advice and guidance.
It’s a whole new knowledge base for me, so that alone makes it great. More so, I like its three components, Measurement, Research and Evaluation, and how they come together in the course work.
The combination of hard science and social science
The focus on data use to advance the educa-tion field
The size and how well we all seem to work to-gether.
The warm atmosphere. The students and professors I have met have been welcoming, supportive, and kind while being disciplined, thoughtful and purposeful
What I like best about ERME is its wonderful faculty who are always ready to help us in eve-rything that they can do.
Supportive faculty members and friendly fellow students
The faculty really reaches out to students- it’s a tight-knit community
I really like the small community. Also, I feel like all of the professors are extremely expe-rienced and supportive.
The classes, the faculty, and the alum

ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS What are your career goals?
Academic research position
I would like to continue to do educa-tion research, especially focusing on the disadvantaged, for my whole career.
I would potentially like to work direct-ly with public schools.
Becoming a data analyst in an educa-tional research center
Let’s start with being a principal, and going from there .
My dream really is to start an eco-tourism company focusing on diving and marine education (instead of mere recreational diving). The profits from this will be plowed back into the local community to help them achieve sustainable growth without my pres-ence.
Ideally, I would continue to do work similar to the TIMSS project, conduct-ing international research in educa-tion to inform policy.
Become a professional policy/program evaluator
To be a research scientist
To own my own company & do con-sulting work
Doing research that I enjoy
Combine my background as an educa-tional policy-maker with my technical background as a healthcare actuary
Something within Higher Education, on the academic side, such as a Direc-tor of Admissions
I am leaning towards a career as an educational consultant or working for independent education and policy related research institutes.
I would like to work as a psychome-trician.
Work on the policy and research end of education reform, and to later teach.
To either work for a large-scale study or a think-tank or go into academia.
I am planning to go back home, Tur-key, to teach and do research at a col-lege.
I want to be a researcher for a non-profit organization that focuses on interventions and social support for students in impoverished, urban com-munities. Eventually after receiving my PhD I would like to be more in-volved in education policy.
To work in a department of education conducting research
17
ERME AERME AERME ANSWERSNSWERSNSWERS
Get the degree because you are interested in learning how to conduct educational re-search, not because you want a lucrative skill set
Feel free to explore the program. People in the department are very communicative, and it’s really easy to get a feel for what it’s like to come here.
A degree in ERME is a wonderful opportunity to enter a growing field that has a direct im-pact on the education system in America. Ad-ditionally, I would tell them that, as an Eng-lish major, almost anyone can enter a career in research even if they haven’t always been the most “math-y” student.
I’d say be very clear exactly what you want to get out of an education first. If the person is sure that it is related to research/measurement, then ERME is definitely a worthwhile consideration.
To really consider whether the general intro-duction of the master’s program will suffice or whether the upper-level courses will be necessary – also to try to take some upper level courses (e.g., GLM) as master’s students
Many opportunities to combine course work with real work experience
I think ERME offers a unique curriculum that blends quantitative and qualitative skills that trains its students to become intelligent con-sumers of data. With such versatile training, ERME graduates are not confined to educa-tion but develop technical and analytical skills that can span across various disciplines in the social and health sciences.
Do it! But be ready to work. This is not a fluffy education program.
Remember that your fellow students are a great resource for council and solace when you need it most.
PhD specific advice:
Come to ERME with a defined goal (e.g., a dis-sertation topic) so that you can easily reach there with the courses that are designed as a complementary to each other.
It’s a great opportunity; however, you have to know what it is that you want to do because there are very many options.
What would you say to people considering an ERME
M.Ed. or PH.D.?
