used  in the la bor atory environment to  protect the  board  from accid ental  physical d amage. P lug in the 12-volt 

ad a pter  to  provid e  power  to the  board. Use the USB ca ble to connect the USB connector  (the one closest to the 

 power  switch) on the DE2-70  board  to a USB  por t on a com puter  that runs the Quar tus II sof twar e. Turn on the 

 power  switch on the DE2-70  board. 

The com puter  will r ecognize the new hardwar e connected  to its USB  por t,  but it will  be una ble to  proceed if  

it  does  not  have  the  r equir ed  dr iver  alr eady  installed. The DE2-70  board   is  progr ammed   by using Alter a’sUSB-Blaster   mechanism.  If   the  USB-Blaster   dr iver   is  not  alr eady  installed,  the  New  Hardwar e Wizard   in

Figur e 1 will a ppear.

Since the d esir ed  dr iver  is not availa ble on the Windows Upd ate We b site, select No, not this time in

r esponse to the question ask ed  and  click  Next. This leads to the window in Figur e 2.

The dr iver  is availa ble within the Quar tus II sof twar e. Hence, select Install from a specific location and

click Next to get to Figur e 3.

 Now, choose Search for  the best driver  in these locations and  click  Browse to get to the  pop-up  box in Figur e 4. Find  the d esir ed  dr iver, which is at location  \<Quartus II system directory>\drivers\usb-blaster. Click  

OK (For Quartus II version 6.1 and later, select the appropriate driver version based on the 64-bit or 32-bit Quartus II

version.) and then upon r eturning to Figur e 3 click  Next. At this  point the installation will commence,  but a d ialog  box in Figur e 5 will a ppear  ind icating that the dr iver  has not  passed  the Windows Logo testing. Click  

Continue Anyway.

The dr iver  will now  be installed  as ind icated  in Figur e 6. Click  Finish and  you can star t using the DE2-70 

 board.

4 Using the DE2-70 Board

The DE2-70  board  is used  in con juction with the Quar tus II sof twar e. A r ead er  who is not f amiliar  with this 

sof twar e should  r ead  an introductory tutor ial. Ther e ar e thr ee versions of  the tutor ial:

These tutor ials cover  the same aspects of  the Quar tus II sof twar e; they d iff er  only in the d esign entry

method   that  is  used.  They  illustr ate  the  entir e  process  of   im plementing  a  d esign  targetted   for   the 

DE2-70 board. 

Detailed  infor mation a bout the DE2-70  board  is given in the  DE2-70 User   Manual, which d escr i bes all of  

the f eatur es of  the  board. It also d escr i bes a Control Panel utility which allows the user  to wr ite/r ead  d ata

into/from var ious com ponents on the  board  in a sim ple and  d ir ect manner. The user  is encour aged  to

explor e and  mak e use of  this utility.
