Getting involved in Swim Teaching/Coaching
Teaching v Coaching
• Swimming makes a distinction between Teaching and Coaching.– Teaching is aimed at developing basic
swimming ability and skills– Coaching is about developing and tuning
learned skills and adapting the swimmer for increased performance through a structured training programme
Level 1
• This is the starting level and there 2 ASA preferred routes based on IOS courses:1. Teaching Aquatics – Aimed at the teaching young swimmers based on the National Plan for Teaching Swimming.
2. Coaching Swimming – Aimed at those coaching swimmers in a competitive swimming clubAs a Level 1 you should be supported
and supervised by a Level 2 Teacher/Coach
Level 2
• Again there are the Teaching Aquatics and Coaching Swimming Routes.
• Level 2 Courses provide more detail and require more practical assessment.
As a Level 2 you should be able to operate on your own
Institute of Swimming (IOS)
• Is the preferred training provider for the ASA
• The IOS provides training courses and the ASA acts as the awarding body (exam board)
• All IOS Courses are booked on-line

Course Costs
• Unfortunately the courses are expensive:– Level 1 - £395– Level 2 - £680
• And there are the travel and time commitments on top
The Club will support you with the costs of courses and there are various bursaries that may be available to you.
