EditorsIt Takes a Village

Note

It may take a village to raise a child (I dont know much about thatyet), but it definitely takes a village to have a wedding. On my big day, I watched as friends and family (not to mention floral designers, planners, bakers, rental companies, musicians, photographers, videographers and chefs) came together to make my October nuptials everything I wanted. I imagine that most brides have felt this way, but you never know how much effort it takes to make things look flawless until you go through it yourself. When a severe temperature drop threatened to ruin my outdoor fall wedding, my vendors, family and friends stepped up to the plate. Greg Snow of We Rent Atlanta not only provided me with gorgeous tables and chairs, but acted as a therapist and weatherman when I called him no less than 30 times in two days asking Is it going to rain, Greg? Is it going to ruin everything? Is the temperature really going to be 38 degrees? Do I need a tent? He talked me down off a ledge more than once, and his team ended up bringing in heaters that helped save the day. My sister and one of my friends worked in tandem to call around for two last-minute tents that worked out perfectly to keep Gregs warm air in. Tammie Hill, my wedding planner at Big Canoe Lodge, made sure every plate, table, bite of food and whim was taken care of. (I love chips and dip, even more than sweets, and she made sure there were dips on every table!) When the plug got pulled on our band for a noise ordinance, Big Mike Geier of Kingsized sang us the coolest song A Capella. It was one of the most special moments of the eveningand completely impromptu. Because of all of their efforts, we had a chilly, yet cozy, fall affair in the north Georgia Mountains with hot cocoa and candlelight. Everything from my autumn-inspired flowers to my crazy bass-drum grooms cake (photo on page 93), arrived on time like a perfectly coordinated dance routine. And while we give our readers DIY ideas in this magazine, let me say this, there is no way to do your wedding day all by yourself. You need those villagers! (So dont forget to thank them with one of our many gift-giving ideas starting on page 32.)

CoverChallengeWhat was in the boxes?Get Married sent simple, ecru and silver menu cards, an unassembled silver favor box, a classic monogram invite, slotted favor tags and place cards. Then we sent eight place settings of Lenox Ivory Frost China, as well as their Timeless Platinum Stemware and Continental Dining Flatware. It turned out to be the silver mint julep cups we sent on a whim that inspired the entire southern romantic look.

We gave celebrity event designer Tony Conway of A Legendary Event a box full of stuff and FOUR days. And this is what he created...

hat Tony Conway did in four days takes most wedding and event designers months to plan and execute. We challenged him to create a table for a bride who loved a southern, romantic look. Wed say he nailed it! First, he covered the table in rows of sheet moss and then dropped a six-foot orchid tree into a hole cut in the center. I wanted it to be lush and to create a canopy for guests to sit under, says Tony. Three hundred orchids were placed into the tree to create its willowy drama. When I got the challenge box, this tablescape just came to me. The mint julep cups had me wanting to use Southern Hydrangeas and Sweet Pea, he says. This table encourages conversation at a wedding. All of the elements and details are talking points. From the above-table wine glass holders to the moss top to the use of fresh pears, the Get Married crew definitely had a lot to talk (and be in awe) about!

Alex Martinez travels around the world shooting ad campaigns, magazine covers and celebrities, but in his early days, he shot quite a few weddings for friends. Its great to see people in love and to be a part of the happiest day of their lives. We brought him back to his roots, when we asked him to shoot the cover of Get Married for our January issue. These days, youre more likely to see him photographing Al Gore, Ludacris or The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Born and raised in Bucaramanga, Colombia, Alex moved to Europe until deciding to study art in the United States. He eventually switched to full-time photography and worked in fashion and portraiture in New York City. Whats your design process like? ML I start the creative process by looking at beautiful fabrics, interior design books, antiques and movies. Im really like a spongeanything around me can spark ideas. Thats what makes every collection different. What remains the same even though collections change? ML I would say my designs are always feminine, elegant and modern at the same time. I think thats the same philosophy I use whether its the gowns, the tabletop collection or the stationeryits always about luxurious textures and an elegant aesthetic with a modern approach. How do you carry your design from the runway to your other projects? ML I always pay a lot of attention to detail. If I find a beautiful embroidered pattern, Ill put it on my dresses and see how it moves. If I love it, Ill see how I can take that pattern and make it work on dinnerware or stationery. Once the collection is done, it really tells a story and then you have the perfect package. Why did you decide to start making invitations? ML We do wonderful collections with the gowns and china. In thinking about what else ties in, wedding stationery was a natural progression, as well as a bed and bath collection to further enhance our registry offerings in the home category. A lot of details from the dresses translate into the invitations. We use techniques of embossing to mimic fabric textures and incorporate the same colors from the gowns and china into the invitations. The invitation sets the tone for the kind of event the bride is having, so the invitations really are the perfect addition to the line. Do you recommend the dress and invitation match? ML I dont really think everything should be matchy. I feel like the bride should shop for her gown first. Sometimes brides dont know what type of wedding they want and if they have the dress first, it can inspire them to create the vision of where they should hold the nuptials and how formal the affair should be.
