Matthew 26:37

“And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.” (KJV)

Isaiah 53:6

“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

Matthew 26:38

“Then He said to them, ‘My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.’”

Luke 22:42

“Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

The suffering was so intense, Christ longed to be released from the burden. It was not an easy thing He did.

Isaiah 53:5

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”

(40), “Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and said to Peter, ‘What? Could you not watch with Me one hour?’”

(43), “And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.”

Psalm 69:20

“Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.”

(This passage attributed by Matthew to be a Messianic prophecy).

“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’”

“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”

When man’s will was preferred over God’s will, death occurred.

However, when God’s will is preferred over man’s will, life comes.

Conclusion

Christ submitted to the Father, and paid the penalty for our sin.Are you willing to say to God, “Not my will, but Thine be done?”
