District Governor’s Message — Laura Day

People tell me I am smiling all the time. Wouldn’t you, if you had the honor and privilege of serving as your Governor for the 2012-2013 Rotary Year? This gig started for me many years ago, traveling this great District of ours, 300 miles from tip to tip, meeting Rotarians from our wonderfully diverse areas, making friends in every Club and every community. My personal goal this year is

to meet every Rotarian in District 5160. I want to shake your hand, give you a hug and thank you for your service and for being a part of this great organization. In times like today, Rotary is even more relevant. It offers us balance in our lives. We are all working harder, and are more pressed for time, money and have more personal demands than ever before. This is all the more

Happy Bucks were only a warm-up, however, as Sydney began her quest for real money. Victims included Vic Bucher (for failing to recognize Will Portello); Manny Carbahal (hot new car); Dave Heard (Becky’s new position at UCD); Larry Greene (profiled in Sac Business Journal) and Marc Thompson (multi-media video blog). After Sydney took her chair, Clay announced he’d be missing our next two meetings. The Sergeants took note.

Lindsay Smith introduced our speaker, Tim Gbedema, a lecturer at UCD on global tourism, cultures and economics. A native of Ghana, Tim is in the United States on asylum. He met Lindsay’s dad, Bob Smith, through DYSL where they have coached together for many years. Tim, Lindsay’s parents and a number of other soccer parents created the Otwetiri Project to raise funds to build and furnish a school in Otwetiri, Ghana. Most of their funding comes from an annual event called the Taste of Ghana. Funds are raised through ticket sales, corporate sponsors and silent auction profits. The school has been constructed and now they are trying to furnish the school and construct latrines, urinals and a computer room. Our club helped the

project by financing close to $1,000 to ship soccer uniforms and equipment to Ghana. The soccer equipment is used throughout the school year and has resulted in an increase in the number of children that remain in the school.

In answer to questions, Tim informed us Otwetiri is located not far from Ghana’s capital, Accra, where there are several Rotary Clubs. Most boys and some girls play soccer, although net ball is more popular with the girls. The town has no electricity, and water for the town comes from a nearby stream. The town has a well, but it has been abandoned and is not now used.

Thanks, Lindsay, for having Tim update us on a part of the world few of us know well.

Tim Gbedema

reason to value our membership in Rotary. Rotary is fun and it gives us a worthwhile break from work. It offers us friendship, service to others, and a focus on peace and understanding.Andwe do it all with people who subscribe to a high standard of personal conduct. The Club Presidents, the District Leadership Team and I have been busy preparing to make this Rotary year even more meaningful for every Rotarian, a year full of surprises, accomplishments, accolades and most importantly Fun!We have a lot to do in Rotary, and tackling Rotary Club challenges and

projects comes easily when it’s stress free and collaborative and when there is an openness to differences. And when it is fair, supportive, and welcomes free thinking, and when everyone is participating. I invite all of you to join me, the 71 enthusiastic and committed Club Presidents and the numerous District Committee members, and let’s have a great time, because in 2012-13 A Funny Thing Happened…Without proper planning and goal setting, vwe can’t get where we want to go. Glimpse at what we plan to accomplish this year at http://www.rotary5160.org/district-5160/governor-elect-2012/

l • Community Service committee meeting with Mack and Lindsay and Clay’s first board meeting.

• Clay was going to sit down with Tom this week to draft a budget for the club and committees.

• We will focus on projects that are hands on and encourage club member participation. Partnering with other organizations to increase our effectiveness.

• We are going to explore a Sunrise Rotary once a year signature service project that we may be able to link to fundraising.

• We discussed the possibility of more involvement with the local schools.

The only current project I am aware of is in planning. It is am outdoor educational area at DHS for full inclusion students in currently unused space. We were waiting for an update from the POC at DHS Debbie Covert as to the impact of the School Board to demolish the MPR building. — Jay Brookman

Clay’s Corner by Clay Brandow Thank you Davis

Sunrise Rotary for making my first meeting as your new “Prez” so memorable.

Having DG Laura Day, ADG John Martin, ol’friend Cecil Padilla join us for breakfast was a complete surprise.

I’m headed for Iowa to ride my bike 471 miles across the state with 10,000 of my new biking friends known as RAGBRAI.. You’’ll be in good hands with past presidents Bruce Wolk (7/20)

and LarryOlsen (7/27). Programs will be the Knights Landing Clinic, providing service to a Yolo County community in need of medical services (7/20), and Camp Royal, impressions of 3 grateful students we sponsored (7/27). Don’t miss ‘em. And you won’t want to miss my talk (8/3) on Thailand and Cambodia, and what it was like to attend the the 2012 Rotary International Conference in Bangkok with 35,000 of our fellow Rotarians. Here’s a hint: IT BLEW MY MIND! The RI Conference is the ultimate “Whole Earth Festival!”
