Where have all the verbs gone?

• There ………. studies in Mexico that …….. that

those who ……… English earn around 30% more

than those who do not.

earn – be - show - learn – told - rank

Where have all the verbs gone?

There have been studies in Mexico that show that those who learn English earn around 30% more than those who do not.

Leigh Thelmadatter, IATEFL Cardiff on-line, Sat, 03/14/2009 - 19:42

Is it motivating?

Many but not All

• My former boss, a Mexican trained as a doctor, told me that she earns more as an English teacher than she did at medicine!

• And STILL many students rank their English classes low in priority.

How does learning

(not only language learning)

happen in the brain?

Arrange this in a logical order:

Researches are

1) that occur during the learning process –

2) from the first try to a completely learned skill

3) to measure changes in brain activity

4) using functional magnetic resonance imaging

Neurones and synapses TRUE -FALSE

Learning takes place when neurons communicate

with each other. When neurones receive sensorial

inputs they form extensions called dendrites

The axon is a long thin fibre which starts from a

neurone and stretches towards another neurone.

Dendrites and neurones make up networks, the

point of conjunction is called synapse

The liquids which make neurones communicate are

the neurotransmiters

Neural activity can be increased by grafting brain cells onto nano-tubes, thereby creating something that's half brain, half ultra-tech,

Brain cells grow very effectively on the nanomaterial, indicating that this junction could be a biocompatible link between mind and machine

We believe

-two different sides of the brain are responsible for different modes of thinking

- both of these modes of thinking are required for uncovering the effective solution of the problem

- individual preferences

- whole brain thinking

- brain plasticity

“… some teachers will actually say that they are only responsible for teaching the language, and not for the general

educational development of the student.

This, however, is an illusion. Whether we are aware of it or not, students will

always learn more in their language classes than just language”

Three circles or a triangle?

http://www.witchhazel.it/brain_learning.htm

What is the image ?

Are you sure there is a triangle in the picture?

Page 22: Get them involved and keep their motivation Jana Jilkova * jajilkova@gmail

Get them involved and keep their motivation * Cardiff 2009

Because...

http://www.witchhazel.it/brain_learning.htm

Why do we see a triangle which doesn't exist?

... the left hemisphere sees things in a sequel

while the right one sees wholes and adds what is missing

The combination of a person's desire and energy directed at achieving a

goal. Influencing people's motivation means getting them want to do what you know
