ABOUT THE KRAFT GROUP The Kraft Group is a diverse, family-operated holding company with interests in forest products, paper and packaging, sports and entertainment, real estate development, and private equity investing. Most notably, the Kraft Group is known for owning the New England Patriots professional football franchise, the most successful team in the recent past with three championships in the new millennium. What many don’t know is that other Kraft Group companies are leaders in their industries and conduct business in over 80 countries with annual shipments in excess of one million tons. With success comes challenge, however. Behind the scenes, data protection was a critical function that had to be executed among 8 independent operating units and 14 decentralized locations. This study examines how the Kraft Group addressed their data protection and recovery objectives and the results of implementing the RestartIT online backup and recovery solution. DATA PROTECTION & RECOVERY CHALLENGES Diverse Technologies Inhibited Centralized Management Support Backup technologies had evolved independently with member companies of the Kraft Group. Differing tape drives and libraries made it extremely difficult for central management to provide administrative support should a local administra- tor be indisposed. There was no for- mal policy to assure offsite protection. With the independent operating units, offsite protection of data was an indefi- nite, manual process that the Kraft Group management sought to change. THE SOLUTION The RestartIT online backup service was chosen and first deployed at the Rand Whitney Group, a member company that would serve as a test site for enterprise consideration. Online backup offered a different approach where an initial full “seed” was stored offsite at Venyu’s highly-secure storage vault. Subsequently, daily block- level changes are detected within files or databases and then subject to compres- sion and encryption prior to being pushed outbound over existing Internet circuits in a disk-to-disk, offsite storage process. Even though small incre- mental changes are being transmitted, the result is a complete backup, protected in a world-class datacenter.
