Dear Jobseeker,

With the UK still in the grips of its longest ever recession, OCVC has responded by continuing to run our highly successful ‘Get That Job’ programme to help you get back in to work.

By choosing one of the courses in this booklet you have the opportunity to experience vocational areas you may not have considered before. You also have the chance to upgrade your qualifications and skills to help you stand out in the increasingly competitive job market.

If academic studies are not for you, please do not worry. Most of the courses in this booklet are very ‘hands on’ and you learn in a relaxed but informative environment.

The courses are free if you are unemployed or facing redundancy.

step 1. Get going!Get Going starter courseThe Get Going course is a first step for people who would benefit from a starter course. Build your confidence in the job market with a short course covering help with CVs, applications and interview skills. You will also receive advice and guidance about careers, training and jobs.

Get going with supportWith supportive staff there for you at every stage, you will have lots of help to get going.

Guidance with choosing a course

Trained careers advisers can help you work out which skills you need to develop and help you choose the next step towards the course and career you want. Your careers adviser will guide you during the Get Going stage. For a careers discussion before you start, please contact our guidance centre at the Oxford campus on 01865 551810 or Banbury campus on 01865 551624.


Financial support

Help with the costs of travel, childcare or any equipment required may be available from our Discretionary Fund (subject to availability). You can apply if you are out of work or earning less than £1�,000 a year (£2�,000 if living as a couple). For more information please contact our customer service advisers or talk directly with June Mills on 018�� 121�/��1�8�.

Childcare

You may be eligible for financial help through the Discretionary Fund or through the Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work scheme.

The College has a nursery at our Oxford and Banbury campuses. However, you could use any childcare provision that has been accredited by Ofsted. For more information please contact our customer service advisers or talk directly with June Mills on 01865 551214/551684.

Your local SureStart Children’s Centre may also be able to help with childcare. Contact the Oxfordshire Family Information Service for more details on 08452 262636.

Travel to college

All courses will run if there is sufficient demand, however the college reserves the right to cancel any advertised courses should demand be insufficient.

This basic introduction is designed for people wishing to enter the construction industry and requires no previous knowledge. It covers general maintenance tasks such as changing tap washers, bleeding radiators and using thermostat radiator valves effectively.


Introduction to Plumbing - Level 1

This course is designed for people wishing to enter the construction industry and follows on from the basic introduction in the Entry Level course. It will allow you to carry out basic maintenance on a plumbing system. The aim of the course is to understand how to keep a plumbing system working at an efficient level.



Motor Vehicle Introduction to Motor Vehicle - Entry Level

This is a practical introduction to car maintenance and what you need to know to ensure a car stays safe and legal. The course is designed for people wishing to enter the motor vehicle industry.

This City and Guilds Level 1 qualification consists of four welding processes; each process at this level carries an “Award”. This City and Guilds Level � qualification offers a total of nine welding awards which involve five welding processes. It allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the engineering sector.

Hair and BeautyWedding Specialist

This is a tailor made programme for students wishing to enter the industry. No experience in hair or make-up is necessary. You will gain a college certificate and could progress to further training to gain a recognised qualification in either hairdressing or beauty therapy.

Safety and Security

Certificate in Door Supervision

Door supervisors are responsible for safety in premises such as bars, pubs and nightclubs. The course covers checking people’s suitability, searching them for drugs or weapons, dealing with conflict, restraining and escorting individuals off premises and dealing with emergencies. No prior qualifications required. Candidates must hold either a passport, driving licence or their original birth certificate in order to do the course.

Certificate in Security Guarding

Security guards work to protect life and property and help prevent crime. The course covers checking security, looking out for problems, searching vehicles and aircraft. Certificate for CCTV Operators

The Level 2 (Public Space Surveillance) Certificate opens the door to working in the security industry. Certificate in Conflict Management

This course is open to individuals who hold an SIA security licence. Candidates need to have taken the Door Supervision or Security Guarding course previously. The course examines how staff can reduce the risks of assault through non physical methods. Completion of this qualification will open the door to employment in the security industry.

First Aid at Work

This course is delivered by St. John’s Ambulance who are approved by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) to deliver First Aid Training in the workplace. It covers the practical skills needed by a first aider including emergencies, resuscitation, choking, burns, chest pains, shock, stroke and much more. Upon successful completion of the course learners receive an HSE approved certificate of compliance equivalent to NVQ Level 2 valid for � years.

A short introductory course to Teaching English as a Foreign Language/English for Speakers of Other Languages (EFL/ESOL). The course introduces you to the methodology of teaching language skills and prepares you to go onto the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

This is a two day practical introduction to training course which could lead to the short Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) teaching qualification or two year CertEd/PGCE.

Oxford Campus

Walking from the railway station:

Follow road signs for the Ice Rink. The college is situated opposite the Ice Rink on Oxpens Road. Approximately 10 minutes walk.

Walking from the city centre:

From Carfax Tower proceed along Queen Street (past Marks & Spencer on your left), at the end of the road turn left into Castle Street and continue on Norfolk Street to the junction with Thames St and Oxpens Road. Turn right into Oxpens Road and the main college entrance is directly opposite the Ice rink. Approximately 10-1� minutes walk.

Blackbird Leys Campus

Oxford Bus Co. (No. � bus) and Stagecoach (No. 1 bus) both run a regular service to Blackbird Leys. The main city centre stops are in Queen Street and are numbered F� for Stagecoach and F� for Oxford Bus Co. The Stagecoach route also stops at the railway station.

You need to get off the bus in Balfour Road and walk back up to Blackbird Leys Road (this is the road that the bus has just turned off of). Turn left and continue to the junction with Cuddesdon Way (row of shops on your right). Turn left into Cuddesdon Way and the Blackbird Leys campus is almost immediately on your right.

Bicester Campus

By Stagecoach bus No.S5 which begins its journey from Magdalen Street, Oxford:

The bus will travel right through Bicester town and through The Glory Farm Estate. You should ask the driver to drop you at the stop nearest the Telford Industrial Estate which will be Benson Close (Boston Rd). You will be able to see the industrial estate as you get off the bus-walk up to the junction with the Launton Road and turn right. You will see the entrance to the industrial estate opposite you. Cross the main road with care and once in the estate take the first left (Telford Road). The college is at the far end on the left.

From Bicester North railway station:

Leaving the station turn right onto Buckingham Road. At Churchill Road turn right and continue to the end where you need to turn left onto Launton Road. Turn right into Telford Industrial Estate and then immediately left into Telford Road. The college is at the far end on the left.

Walking time approximately 35 minutes.

The journey from Bicester North station to the campus can also be continued by bus picking up the S� (see above) opposite the railway station on New Street.
