What is Wikipedia?
• The largest encyclopedia on the web
• Been around for 15 years
• More than 5 million articles in the English version
• There are Wikipedias in more than 240 different languages

Why Wikipedia?
• Long term impact – articles published and read for a long time
• Visibility – Wikipedia int the top of search results
• Research dissemination – a great tool for cooperation

1. CREATE A WIKIPEDIA ACCOUNT
SAHLGRENSKA ACADEMY
1. Click on the link Create account 2. Enter your username like this: “First Last (GU)” 3. Enter password, email address and captcha. Click Create account.

• Use your full name – makes it possible for a journalist to contact you • Show your affiliation to University of Gothenburg by putting "GU" in parenthesis
after your name • When logged in, your username is showing at the top of the page

2. CREATE A USER PAGE

1. Go to a special web site called Meta-Wiki: meta.wikipedia.org 2. Click Beta to turn on the visual editor – makes editing a lot easier 3. Check the Visual editing box, scroll down and click Save

The user page should contain contact information & research interests 4. Click on your username – the read link at the top of the page 5. Click the tab Create – this will create an empty user page for you

There is a template specially made for staff at the University of Gothenburg 6. Click on Insert and choose Template
7. Search for a profile called Profile GU, select it and click Add template

8. Fill out the form with your occupation, department and “About me” 9. When you are finished, click the blue Insert button 10. Click Save Page in the upper right hand corner to publish your edits

2. MAKE A MINOR EDIT

1. Go to the article on Wikipedia you want to edit 2. Click the tab Edit to start editing the article The visual editor is just like a word processor with tools for formatting etc.

3. Edit the text to your liking. References are added with the Cite tool. 4. When you are satisfied with your edit, click Save page 5. Write a small note explaining the edit, the article is published instantly
