Fellow CBCS Collectors:

We are enjoying receiving monthly Cribbage World since joining ACC. They contain interesting and informative articles. CBCS members give us recognition in this monthly publication. Following is what I found interesting:

Dave Akien, Editor of Cribbage World and new member of CBCS, wrote an article titled My Deal in the February Cribbage World (page 4). He questioned if there ever existed a “29” cribbage board with a 5 of Clubs as the cut card. I checked our small collection of fourteen “29” boards and I found nothing but diamonds and hearts. It seems that Mr. Hong Kong and J. A. Pan seemed to prefer diamonds, hearts, or no pictured cards at all. The most recent “29” created by the most recent Bill Drueke has only numbers and letter “J” with no picture of cards. This

gives us something new to search for. How about your collections? What do you find in your “29s”?

Jay Fulwider also writes “Cribbage Board of the Month.” Each month he covers a unique board. Joyce Betz is also noted in her ranking 14th in the Central Region Sanctioned Cribbage Tournaments. There may be other CBCS members mentioned but I did not recognize them.

This newly formed association between ACC and CBCS seems to be positive. I’m looking forward to the closely associated Grand National Tournament and CBCS’s Annual Convention in Milwaukee, WI on September 18-23, 2018. Plans are being made to firm up our convention details. More information to follow.

Meanwhile, I hope you are making plans to attend the CBCS convention in Grand Rapids, MI this September 2017.

Keep on peggin’, searchin’ and learnin’

Pattberg #810. A traveling leatherette pouch holding a folding cribbage board of reddish wood with cards. This travel set looks like #489 above but numbered far apart. A brown paper box with “No. 810 Game Set, Pattberg NY.” (From the Collection of Larry Snow.)

The many boxes the Pattbergs come in!

There seems to be 2 edge styles of boards. Routed edge as in the front board and the round-over ends as in the back board. The folding box boards have a distinct clasp and metal hinges.

This is only a gathering of Pattberg boards. I hope to find out more about the company in the future. Their label is very recognizable. If anyone has any others, I would greatly appreciate

receiving a picture and description of them.

Restoration of a Doerner Manufacturing Company Hedgehog Cribbage Board

(Patent Pending 1974)

This is a Doerner Manufacturing Company Hedgehog cribbage board. The only information I gathered from researching the internet is that Dorerner may have been a furniture manufacuturer. I purchased it at the 2016 CBCS Convention silent auction. It was ugly, the pegs did not work hardly at all, and I got it cheap! The board is 9 3/4 inches long and 2 7/8 inches wide. My objective was to transform this board into a pretty board and one that worked well. This is the finished product pictured here and these are the steps used to get it into a collectible condition once again. (It cannot compare to a John Gill Hedgehog)

Step 1. I disassembled the board. Here are the pieces that make up the finished product. A top piece, a strip of leather, a bottom piece, 5 screws and 120 brass pegs. Note that a John Gill Hedgehog uses piano felt to provide the friction and holding power for the pull up pegs. This Doerner board uses leather. I figured the leather had shrunk over time and therefore prevented easy movement of the pegs up and down.

Step 2. I used vaseline and smeared it all over the leather and into the holes, hoping that would relax the leather and allow the pegs to glide more easily yet still provide the friction to hold the pegs.

Step 3. This was a “painful process” of polishing each peg with brass polish. Not only did the pegs look much better, but my thought was that the polished pegs would slide more easily in the holes during play.

Note: the bottom of each peg has been flattened which is what prevents the peg from coming out

of the playing surface when pulled up.

Step 4. I sanded the top and bottom pieces of the cribbage board. Once sanded, I used an oil modified, water based Minwax satin polyurethane. After each of two applications, the surface was sanded to a fine smooth finish.

Once the finish was dry and sanded, the pieces were reaasembled and bingo, a nice looking, smooth working hedgehog emerged and joined my display between two John Gill hedgeghogs.

Jay Fulwider’s article in the March 2016 ACC Newsletter

This month I am featuring three unique boards. They do have one thing in common; they are all very hard to play on. The top board is a standard wood, twice around, board. It is nicely made with narrow strips of wood inlays that are about 1/8” deep. The inlays delineate the groups of five peg holes. The only problem, as you can see, is that the holes are drilled at angles. It looks rather cool, but really takes some getting used to.

The middle board was manufactured by Kencroft Associates of Buffalo, NY. It was even patented. The patent, No. D-144.417, was issued to Ralph T. Rycroft 4-9-1946. It is a three player board that zig zags up the groups of five holes. It is a 121 point board, but trying to figure out “board position” or a “skunk” is difficult.

The last board I made. I just like unusual boards and didn’t have any need for this shoe horn. I played one game on it and that was enough. It is very tipsy.

Over the years, many people have asked me why I collect cribbage boards. Other than I like it, I have never had a real good answer. Recently, my wife came across an answer by Gretchen Rubin, author of “The Happiness Project”. She says “A collection provides a mission, a reason to visit new places, the excitement of the chase, a field of expertise (no matter how trivial), and often, a bond with other people.” She said it sounded like fun and I can vouch that it is.
