We are a charity who is passionate about making a positive difference to the lives of people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a dual sensory loss. Our aim is to provide innovative services that empower children, young people and adults to control their own lives.

About BID Services

First of all, thank you for fundraising for BID.

Many deaf people and those with a dual sensory loss face many challenges. Due to the communications barriers they face on a daily basis, they are four times less likely to have a job, do not have the same access to health information as their hearing peers, and arefrequently excluded from engaging in mainstream sports.

You, our amazing fundraisers are makinga huge contribution to our work by raising vital funds that will be used to ensure those we support lead happier, healthier and more fulfilled lives.

Whatever you decide to do, there are lots of ways you can raise money for BID. You could host a coffee morning, organise a pub quiz, get everyone dancing, or get your local school involved. Or, if you are looking for something big, you could take part in one of our more extreme challenges. With your support, we want to create a world where hearing loss doesn’t label or limit anyone.

This pack will get you off to a great start, but our Fundraising Team is here to help, so just get in touch with us if you need help, support or ideas to get your fundraisingoff to a flying start.

With your support, we can:

Provide a sports, youth and family service to support the social development of children, young people and adults

Provide sensory impaired people with the support they need

Improve employment chances for deaf and hard of hearing adults

Provide better access to information relating to health so deaf people are not told they have cancer on a post-it note

Reach out to older people with befriending services so we can reduce their loneliness and isolation

With your help, we can continue to provide vital support....to children like George

Deaf Youth Club allows George to socialise and have fun

George is 12 years old and was born into a hearing family. George attends BID’s Deaf Youth Club every Wednesday and has also taken part in holiday activities. The Youth Club provides an environment where George can interact, socialise and learn a range of new skills such as arts, sports, media work and internet safety. George loves his two cats, playing on his go-kart in the garden and using his iPad to make mini films.

George’s Mum tells his story: George is profoundly deaf and a BSL user so his access to the usual after school activities has been impossible to date. He has felt lonely and frustrated as he saw his siblings going out and asked “Why can’t I?” Being able to go to the Youth Club each week has made a huge difference to George’s welfare, both socially and emotionally. It has also affected our family life in a very positive way.

George’s confidence has grown, he is more accepting of his deafness and he can relax because it’s his environment. For a small part of the week, he doesn’t have to exert all his energy coping in a ‘hearing’ world. George is also noticeably less frustrated at home and at school which has helped his ability to learn. He also attended BID’s holiday club too which was brilliant for giving him much needed deaf interaction in what would have been a very ‘hearing’ summer.

Fundraising Tips

Set up a Just Giving page Just Giving pages are a quick, easy and secure way to collect donations. It’s easy to share your stories, raise funds and track your fundraising using this online tool. Plus, if you are organising an event, even those that can’t attend can still make a donation.

Gift Aid Don’t forget to ask people to Gift Aid their donation if they are a UK taxpayer. Gift Aid is a scheme that allows BID to claim an extra 25p for every £1 donated.

Match funding Local companies often run match funding schemes where they will match the amount you raise. Think about which companies you know that may be interested in doing this ie. your workplace and don’t be afraid to ask.

Set yourself a target of how much you want your event to raise as this will give you a goal to aim for. Share the target with your supporters as it may encourage them to give more.

Fix a date and plan carefully check the date doesn’t clash with any other activities in your area - you don’t want to be competing for the limelight.

Ask for help Recruit a team of family and friends to help you. Give everyone a job so you know that everything is taken care of. Consider seeking sponsorship and donations in return for free publicity or free tickets.

Spread the word tell as many people as possible about what you’re doing. Remember to mention BID Services as much as you can.

Fundraise online we do have paper sponsorship forms but we would also encourage you to set up an online fundraising page with your chosen provider. Online fundraising can raise more money than offline sponsorship and lets you reach more people. It also allows your supporters to claim gift aid on our behalf, which will increase donations by about 25%.

Use social networks Using social media such as Facebook and Twitter is a great way to let friends, family and colleagues know what you’re doing. Telling people why you are raising money for BID Services is a good way to help motivate them to get involved too.

Have fun Enjoy yourself. Fundraising should be fun - the more fun you have, the more people are likely to donate. Don’t forget to take lots of photos - you can use these on social media posts and in local media to raise a bit more money after the event.

Keep it safe and legal Simple things you can do to ensure everything runs smoothly. If you want to hold a public collection, you’ll need to make sure you get the appropriate permission beforehand. For street collections, ask your local authority or get in touch with the owner if the collection will take place on private land. If you’re thinking of organising a raffle and selling tickets to the general public, you’ll need to contact your local authority to get a license.

Raising money We can provide you with sealed collection boxes to help keep your money secure. When you are counting and handling money, always try to make sure that two people are present. Take care when transporting money and try and bank cash as soon as possible.

The funds you raise can help people like Wycliffe find a job...

Wycliffe suffered some hearing loss in his adult life then acquired a visual impairment. He had a passion for cooking and studied for a professional qualification. When we met Wycliffe, he had attended a lot of interviews but felt he was being turned down because of hisdisabilities.

What Wycliffe says:

When I first came to BID’s EmploymentService, my confidence was a bit low as I had been applying for jobs and notgetting them. I got loads of supportfrom the team who helped me somuch. They helped me to practisemy interview skills and to improvemy job applications. We also didmock interviews which wereuseful.

I was told about a job working ina kitchen so I applied and wentfor the interview and then I gotthe job!

This job really built my confidenceand two years on, I felt I was readyto take on any challenge. I havejust got a job at a 4 star hotel inBirmingham, where I am hoping to learn more, especially how to makeinternational dishes and desserts. The support I got from the Employmentteam was great and I just want to saythanks to everyone for helping me achieve my goals.
