Each year, students all over St. Lou-is take the ACT test, hoping to get a high enough score that will get them into their school of choice. Although a necessary “right of passage,” and not something a student should take lightly, there is advice out there to help make it a little easier.

As a high school teacher, I overhear students discussing their scores, often frustrated at the outcome. Rest as-sured, there is help out there—whether in the form of articles such as this, ACT preparatory courses offered at your school or local tutoring agency, or the ACT website.

This will be the first in a series of ar-ticles covering tips to help both types of students: those who have not taken the test and need initial or more in-depth advice, and those who have taken it before and need to improve their score.

Future articles in this series will cov-er specific test issues that students will encounter including test day prepara-tions, general test-taking skills, the “to take or not to take writing” debate, and specific tips to help you get through and excel on each of the individual sections of the ACT.

The ACT exam consists of four timed, multiple-choice sections, includ-ing English, Math, Reading and Sci-ence.

The English test consists of 75 ques-tions, and takes 45 minutes to com-plete. This test measures English and rhetorical skills. Topics include grammar and usage skills that cover punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, and sentence structure. The English test also covers rhetorical skills, including writing strategies and style.

The Reading test has 40 questions, and takes 35 minutes to complete. This test measures reading comprehension skills that require the student to answer questions based on the reading. Ques-tions will test skills such as determining main ideas, making comparisons, and

generalizations. The Mathematics portion of the test

has 60 questions, and takes 60 min-utes to complete. This test expects you to solve practical math skills using mathematical formulas, and computing skills comparable to those achieved by juniors in high school. You will be al-lowed to use certain types of calcula-tors on the exam, which we will discuss in a later issue.

Finally, the Science test consists of 40 questions and takes 35 minutes to complete. Topics covered in this exam consist of knowledge gained from natural science courses. Skills tested include data interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem solving. Questions present scientific information that you will be expected to interpret. Opposed to the math portion of the test, students are not allowed to use calculators on this exam.

Although not mandatory, ACT now of-fers a writing exam. This is a 30-minute essay test consisting of a single writing prompt, measuring the student’s ability to use proper writing strategies. There is a debate among teachers whether a student should take this test since it is not yet required for entrance at most schools. We will explore this issue in an upcoming article.

All tests on the ACT assume that the student has taken the typical required courses of students having completed their junior year of high school. Be-cause of this, it is advised that students wait until their junior year of high school to attempt the exam.

Be sure to check out our Novem-ber issue, when we will discuss gen-eral ACT preparatory skills for test day, general test-taking skills, and multiple-choice testing skills to help you get though the ACT exam, and come out with the score you desire.

Until next time, study hard and happy testing!

Kearney ColeJohn F. Kennedy High School

For many high school students, balancing outside activities while maintaining a 3.89 G.P.A. may seem like an overwhelming challenge; however, John F. Kennedy High School senior Kearney Cole not only takes all this in stride, but also manages to excel beyond all expectations.

It is her extensive list of accomplishments that has earned Cole the title of October Student of the Month for “Get in the Game, Saint Louis” Magazine. Cole said she is very excited and honored to have been named as the magazine’s first-ever student of the month. “This is an awesome accomplishment,” Cole said. “I’m really proud I was chosen.”

Cole was nominated by John F. Kennedy High School Academic Counselor, Monica Sullivan. Sullivan said Cole is a very special student who is a perfect candidate for the honor, and is very deserving. “When I think of Kearney, several adjectives come to mind: contagious smile, friendly, smart, and modest,” Sullivan said. “She’s one of those students who is a natural leader…Kearney is a student you wish you could duplicate and have more of.”

Although only a senior in high school, Cole has already built up quite an impressive resume. She is in her fourth year acting as a student ambassador for Kennedy, has served four years as class president for Student Council, and is now serving as vice president of National Honor Society.

Extracurricular activities are the foundation of a well-rounded education, and Cole takes full advantage of those offered at Kennedy. Cole is in her fourth year serving on the campus ministry and in her third year writing stories and taking photographs for Kennedy’s “Torch Newsmagazine.”

Cole has also been very active in athletics at Kennedy. She’s now in her fourth year playing for the girl’s soccer team and in her third year as a member of the school’s swim team. Cole also played for two years on the junior varsity softball team.

Beyond school activities, Cole also volunteers her time in the community. Cole said the person who has inspired her to volunteer is Chuck Chiodini, Campus Minister and religion instructor at Kennedy. Chiodini said knowing he has inspired a student is very humbling. “It’s pretty amazing, I don’t

feel I deserve it.” Chiodini has organized service trips

to Monte Verde, Honduras, in which Cole has participated the past two years. Cole said of all of her volunteer work, the service trip to Honduras was one of her favorites. She said she learned a lot while there, but that it is even more amazing to know how she has helped the people of Honduras.

As a service volunteer in Honduras, Cole would help out with arts and crafts, and play with the kids. “Kearney was very involved and a bundle of endless energy,” Chiodini said, “She is really a good kid.”

Another community service organization she is proud to be a part of is the Mary, Queen of Peace Youth Group. Cole said as part of the youth group, she worked with Habitat for Humanity as well. “I enjoy helping people,” Cole said. “I just love seeing the work I do when I help others; I’m very proud.”

As if Cole wasn’t involved enough, she also manages to make time to work at Train Wreck restaurant. Cole said she works about 10 to 15 hours a week; just enough to learn the value of the dollar. She said although it’s great

having her own money, this job has also helped her learn to communicate better with people.

Despite her multi-tasking abilities, Cole admits her schedule still gets pretty tough, but this “got-it-all-together” teen says she’s learned to prioritize her time more sufficiently. “I think about what’s most important at that time,” Cole said. “I always get done what needs to be done first.”

At this point, Cole said she is looking into several colleges, such as Truman State University, Rockhurst University, and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Although still unsure what she will major in, Cole is considering nursing, teaching, and social work. She said whatever career path she ends up taking, it will definitely have something to do with helping others.

Ask those who have met Cole, and they will tell you what a pleasure it is to have had the opportunity to know her—Kearney Cole is one of a kind. “She can do anything she wants to do,” Chiodini said. “She’s an all-around good kid and as a community, we are very proud of her.”

STAYING FITwith Dan O’Donnell of Athletic Republic

Arm Swing Phase:

Lets begin with Arm Swing. Think hips to lips. With the hand held loosely and the face relaxed, the arm should move forward and upward ending 8-10 inches away from the face (see figure 1.0).

Quick Tip: Tight hands create ten-sion in the forearm and upper arms, therefore restrict motion in the shoul-ders.

Back Swing Phase:

The arm can open up a little (see above photo). We teach athletes to keep a 90-110 degree bend at the el-bow. As you can see, the athlete fea-tured is not quite at the 90 degree bend that we would like to see.

Quick Tip: Arms should swing from the shoulder joint!

High Knee Drive:

Perhaps the most overlooked as-pect in developing an athlete’s speed is proper knee drive. It comes down to two key factors: technique and strength. While we focus on both at our facility, I want to tackle technique in this article. At top speed, the fastest ath-letes in the world have knee drive that is parallel to the ground (90 degrees of Hip Flexion). Take a look at the above photo; it’s not bad, but there is room for improvement.

Quick Tip: Drive your knees!

Foot Strike:

Ok, we’re at a critical crossroad here. If you have great arm swing and knee drive but poor foot strike, you will be SLOW! At acceleration and top speed you should be on your toes (balls of your feet). In the above photo, the ath-lete is about to strike the ground but her ankle/toe is still pointed up. Don’t let that toe hang before you strike the ground. It should be cocked, loaded, and ready to spring off the ground!

Quick Tip: Knee up, toe up.

Mastering The Art Of Running FastSome athletes are just plain fast. They always have been and they probably couldn’t tell you why.

For the most part, fast athletes have three common traits: 1. Arm Swing 2. High Knee Drive 3. Foot Strike.

UNSTOPPABLEJUGGERNAUTS

By: Stephen Glover

When The Makeshift Gentlemen take the stage at any of their shows, you can expect one thing for certain; a heart-pounding show that ratchets up your adrenaline like a ride in a top fuel funny car.

What sets The Makeshift Gentlemen apart from nearly every other band in the St. Louis area is the fact that no matter where they play, they’re always out promoting themselves and their enthusiasm at every show ropes in nearly every member of the audience to participate.

“I really think that the amount of energy that we put into the band outside of the band itself is what sets us apart from everyone else in St. Louis,” lead singer Joe Swigunski said. “We’re the only guys I know that are really excited about playing every show we have. We’re honestly like kindergartners in a candy store every time we’re on stage. We love the shows and everything we do to promote them.”

The Makeshift Gentlemen have a unique style of music, which mixes indie with techno and rock to give listeners a fast-paced tempo, that’s accompanied by thought-provoking

lyrics. Swigunski admits that some may not like his band’s style of music, and that’s okay. What most listeners can respect is the fact that Swigunski along with synth player Jake Ferree, bassist John Henselmeier and drummer Louis Brown are confident and passionate about their music.

“We actually like promoting ourselves and we’re very comfortable with our music,” Swigunski said. “We try to make every one of our shows a visual experience with our own lighting and fog, and most bands don’t do that. When we play our shows, we try to make every show an event, which gets more people to come out and we then can expose them to our music.”

This past summer, The Makeshift Gentlemen opened up for The Ataris in Orlando, Fla., which was nothing short of a true learning experience for all members of the band. The Ataris are mostly known for their re-make of Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer,” which cracked the Billboard Top 20 in 2003.

“We learned about how we should go about things,” Swigunski said in regards to the band’s opening act with the Ataris. “We played that show down

in Orlando, which was a completely new scene for us. That was our fourth show that we had played down in Florida and we were not even up to par show wise, because we didn’t have Louis, our drummer. We found the guy who did most of the promoting in the Orlando area and basically got on his good side because we promoted our shows so much.”

While their first album “Casanova” is just over a year old, The Makeshift Gentlemen have already crafted together three new singles that embody the energy that the band lives on.

“We actually have some new material that we’re currently playing live,” Swigunski said. “Black Hole Cities,” “The Messenger” and “Universe” are all up and running. We haven’t recorded them yet, we’re just playing them live to add to our repertoire of songs so that people are not hearing the same six or seven songs that we normally play at our shows.”

Sony PSP GoThe PSP Go is now available in stores, but before you buy one, you shouldseriously consider these tidbits ofinformation. If you owned an olderversion of the PSP, your games onthe little UMD disks cannot be usedwith the PSP Go. Sony has madethe PSP Go 100% digital, whichmeans when you want to buygames, you’ll have to downloadthem from the PlayStation storeand save them on the Go’s 16GBhard drive. There have been rumorsthat you could trade in your old UMDdisks for downloads of that game and we’re here to tell you that it’sjust not true. Tag on the fact that the PSP Go’s screen is actuallysmaller and the only memory expansion is Sony’s MemoryStick M2 format (which is quite pricey) and you wonderwhat in the world Sony has done to a verycool and unique gaming device.

Without a doubt, the AsusEee PC T91 is one of the

coolest laptops we’ve seenin a long time. What Asus has done

is combine a netbook with a tablet PC,and it’s all yours for about $495. Users can also

expect good battery life due to the use of the Intel ATOM processor. The only real drawback we see would be the fact that the hard drive is only 16GB, which

clearly limits your options in terms of storing files directly onto the PC.

The St. Joseph’s Academy Girl’s Tennis Team Is Focused On Making Their Mark In History

The term “dynasty” could easily be voted as one of the most overused clichés in sports. Many writers quickly use the term to describe a team that has won back-to-back championships, which then dilutes the word’s impact when used in a story. For the girl’s tennis team at St. Jo-seph’s Academy, the word “dynasty” doesn’t even do the Angels justice. The best way to describe the school’s iron grip on the Missouri Class 2 State Championships would be “domination.” Since the 2003 season, the Angels have won five straight state champi-onships, which is tied with Ladue’s five-straight championships from 1988-1992 as well as St. Joseph’s five championships from 1994-1998. The current state record for the most con-secutive state championships in any sport goes to the Ritenour Senior High wrestling team, who won 14 straight championships from 1948-1961. With that being said, St. Joseph’s head coach Doug Smith is looking for-ward to the opportunity for the Angels to cement their mark in girl’s tennis his-tory. “As the saying goes, it’s easier to

get to the top than it is staying at the top,” Smith said. “We’ve been fortunate to stay on top for a lot of years. When you think about it, this will be the 16th year in a row to make the finals (of the girl’s tennis championships). If we win this year, that will be our fifteenth state championship in school history.” Now in his 12th season at St. Jo-seph’s, Smith realizes that schools like Rock Bridge out of Columbia, Mo. are setting their sights on the defend-ing state champions. Rock Bridge has played St. Joseph’s for the state cham-pionship five times since the 2000 sea-son. “Rock Bridge has become our prima-ry rival for the past nine years,” Smith said. “We’ve had to play them at state in either the semifinal or the finals each of those nine years.” This season, the Angels have four seniors that will provide the most fire-power in the Class 2 playoffs; Misia Kedzierski, Katie Thome, Madeline Jolly and Lauren Smith look to bring home the Angels’ sixth straight state championship. “The big four are the real anchors of this team,” Smith said. “Some years,

it’s the bottom of your lineup that saves you. But this year the bottom of our lineup is new, so the No. 1-4 singles are the rock of this team. Misia Kedzierski returns as St. Jo-seph’s defending state champion in singles play after defeating Kate Skori-ja of Park Hill 6-3, 6-2 in 2008. Cur-rently, Kedzierski is nursing an ankle sprain that occurred during the Class 2, District 7 tournament, which could prevent her from defending her singles state title. “When Misia plays, it’s almost a given that we’re going to start off with a lead,” Smith said. “With her playing doubles, she’s virtually good for two points every time we play.” Katie Thome returns as the Angels’ No. 2 singles spot after taking runner-up honors in doubles last season with Angie Tracy. “Katie could play No. 1 singles for just about any other school in the state,” Smith said. “She’s a wonderful player that’s got all kinds of tools and as much as she can drive the ball with pure power, she also has really good hands. Katie’s just a complete player.” Last season, Madeline Jolly placed

fourth at state in singles competition. The Angels’ head coach currently has high expectations of her, as well as Lauren Smith. “Both Madeline and Lauren are what I consider to be the real workhorses of our team,” Smith said. “They are prob-ably the hardest workers on the team because they’re usually the first ones to take the court when we start practice and the last ones to leave. If practice is over, they sometimes will hang out a little longer to hit more balls.” “They have probably played in every match this year where others have not, and they’re reaping the rewards of that because their games have improved dramatically over the course of this season.” At the No. 5 singles is freshman Grace Hyde, who Smith looks to hav-ing a good career at St. Joseph’s. “She’s a tall, lanky, and very prom-ising player,” Smith said. “She hasn’t been playing the game as long as the rest of the girls have, but we’re look-ing for big things from Grace in the fu-ture.”

NHL 10Rating: E 10+Systems: PS3, XBox360Release Date: Available now! What’s New: Aside from the fact that the core gameplay of NHL 10 is basically unchanged from that of NHL 09, the minor alterations to the detailed aspects of the game are what truly shine through! EA Sports has made many small changes since NHL 09, along with some rather large improvements. The most noticeable difference is the addition of the “Tough Guy” style in “Be A Pro” mode. Instead of choosing from the traditional “Playmaker” or “Snip-er,” you are able to put yourself into the skates of one of hockey’s most important player styles: the Bash Brother! There, you will gain points and exprience through pure player on player destruction! You can also throw your weight around with the best of the best to vie for a position on some of the NHL’s most recognized teams. NHL 10 offers a solid NHL experi-ence for both hardcore fans and hockey new-comers! Review By Jake Shuster

Need For Speed: ShiftRating: E for EveryoneSystems: PS3, PSP, XBox360, PCRelease Date: Available Now!Review: If you are looking for an action-packed adrenaline rush, then you need to check out Need For Speed: Shift! Shift brings together the realism of a racing simultor and the action of an arcade racer. Though it’s not as expansive as Gran Turismo or as free roaming as Need For Speed: Carbon, it has one of the most advanced crash mechanics ever seen in a rac-ing game. Instead of bouncing off of walls after a high-speed collision, you actually feel the effects of the crash in the form of blurry vision and slowed time perception. Another strong aspect of Shift is the myriad of vehicle modifications that are available, from the fine-tuning of your drivetrain and powertrain, to the seemingly endless number of body-mod options! Bottom-line-Need For Speed: Shift has set a bar above the rest, and is a must-have for your racing collection! Review By Jake Shuster

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2Rating: T for TeenSystems: PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS, XBox 360Release Date: Available Now!Review: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 has introduced a couple new faces aside from the origi-nal crew from the first game, and has introduced a new plot-line for the alliance. After an initial assault on enemy forces, you are thrown head-long into the middle of a super hero civil war! Guided by your decisions, you will choose which side to join: Captain America and the Resistance, or Iron-man and the Registration! The path you choose will determine which super heroes you will have at your disposal throughout the course of the game. Another ex-citing aspect of MUA2 is your ability to link up with another team member in order to execute powerful “fusion” powers. Teaming up with up to three friends, you too can take your stand in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2! Review By Jake Shuster and Tom Lasky
