YOUTH ART PROGRAM

Summer 2017

Welcome The NWTC Artisan and Business Center is excited to offer a new Summer Series of four-day workshops for youth ages 9 - 18! These creative workshops will give your budding artisan a fun and educational immersion in a variety of media.

Youth Workshops (ages 9-13) include: Meddling with Metal, Summer Book Creations, Stitching to the Beach, and Mosaic Mirror.

Teen Workshop (ages 14-18) include: Unique Printed Journals, Throwing Around Clay, Carve & Cast, and Turning Wood.

These workshops are designed to introduce young artisans to a broad overview of creative problem solving, tools and materials knowledge, and technical skills. With different sessions available both morning and afternoon, artisans are welcome to participate in either a half or full day of workshop fun!

The Artisan Center is dedicated to providing a warm and welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds to participate in the creative arts. We hope to see you this summer!

Youth WorkshopsSESSION #GC001: MEDDLING WITH METAL Instructor: Aaron Reimers T9:00AM-12:00PM Design and create an LED projection light and copper cuff using metalsmithing techniques. Students will identify basic metalsmithing tools and learn how to saw, pierce, rivet, texturize, and create moveable parts from metal. SESSION #GC002: SUMMER BOOK CREATIONS Instructor: Gena Selby T12:30PM-3:30PM Learn how to print pages and create colorful books for the days of summer. Students will create unique images using monoprint techniques with paint, ink, and the etching press. After the images have been printed students will learn several ways to construct books from their creations!

Youth Workshops SESSION #GC003: STITCHING TO THE BEACH Instructor: Lynn Konitzer T9:00AM-12:00PM Create a colorful mesh beach tote and repurpose old jeans into a tic-tac-toe game to play at the beach this summer! Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, cut basic pattern pieces, sew a zipper, and learn several stitching techniques. SESSION #GC004: MOSAIC MIRROR Instructor: Margy Cottingham T12:30PM-3:30PM Create a mosaic mirror using summer inspiration from plants, animals, colors, and vacation locations. Students will make a design “mosaicable,” cut mosaic materials, grout the mosaic mirror, and learn about the history of mosaics.

c June 26, 2017 — June 29, 2017 (MTWR)

Practice learning how to throw clay on the potter’s wheel. Students will learn to wedge clay, center clay, and raise vessel walls using a variety of throwing techniques. Students will also learn how to integrate hand-built clay components and underglaze techniques to create striking clay forms.

SESSION #GC005: UNIQUE PRINTED JOURNALS Instructor: Gena Selby T9:00AM-12:00PM Construct handmade journals to capture your summer experiences, events, and travels. Students will learn relief printmaking techniques to carve linoleum plates and create original prints. Students will also learn a variety of book-binding techniques to transform their original prints into journals.

SESSION #GC006: THROWING AROUND CLAY Instructor: Keith Carter T12:30PM-3:30PM

Teen Workshops

c June 26, 2017 — June 29, 2017 (MTWR)

Learn to create unique sand-casted metalwork and letter ornaments. Students will create their own designs by carving them into linoleum sheets and then construct sand-casted molds that will be used to pour the molten metal. After the metal is cooled, students will learn how to clean and buff the poured metal for a high-crafted finish.

Create beautiful wooden spindles, vases, and bowls while learning how to use a wood lathe. Students will learn how to prepare wood for turning, insert the wood into the lathe, and use a variety of cutting tools to create unique wooden forms.
