Harry Kernahan

Harry Kernahan recently passed away in Adelaide aged 74, has been described as the man behind the most successful era in Glenelg's history. Kernahan played 176 games with Glenelg as a stout-hearted ruckman from 1959-65 and again from 1969-71. He was captain in 1964 and 1965 and played 10 games for South Australia, including the match at the MCG in 1963 when the Croweaters scored their first win in Victoria since 1926. After his playing career had ended, Kernahan served as Glenelg's general manager from 1973-87. The Bays won three of their four premierships in this era, in 1973, 1985 and 1986. Harry played Colts for South Augusta and played A Grade for the club aged 16 years before heading off to Adelaide for a successful career. Condolences from the club to Gary, Carmen, Todd and Billie, Stephen, David and families

Mrs Joyce Phillips

Joyce Phillips, South Augusta Life member passed away recently in Adelaide. Joyce served as the Clubs Guernsey cleaner from 1985-2009, a total of 25 years service in that role being part of several A Grade premierships in 1993, 1994, 2000 and 2006. Joyce washed Guernseys for the club for over 450 games and was an integral part of the clubs success during that time. The club offers its condolences to Joe and family after the loss of a great Southie.

Cricket summary

The A Grade is sitting about third at the moment with last week loss in the rain affected game against Wests disappointing as they had a good chance to win that game when storm clouds opened. A recent highlight was a great win against Quorn chasing 220 with David Robinson, Wes Yates and Scott Collinson performing well. The next weeks lost to Willsden brought them back to earth and they need to string a few wins together to be a force in the finals. Good luck to Under 17s opening bowler Sam Maule who has left to attend College in Adelaide this year, Sam will hopefully be back for a few games and the finals in March. In the A’s Todd Kernahan is leading the run making and Jarrod Waterworth taking the most wickets so far. South White are in second spot in the B’s with South Red knocking on the door of the finals in 5th spot and they must keep on winning. In the B’s Travis McNamee and Matthew McInnis are performing with the bat in both teams and in the bowling Travis McNamee and Boots Harrison lead the wicket taking in both teams. The Under 17s remain in top spot with Craig Shirley leading the batting and Marcus Kerin the bowling stats and in the Under 14s are also top with Rowan Irvine the most runs and Stuart Dunneman the most wickets. The A’s finally discovered how to play 20/20 games and the recent win against Willsden was well deserved with the last game against West this Sunday 8.30am, get along to see them progress further Centenary Committee Update

FLASHBACKS 1912 100 YEARS AGO. 1912- Position 3 rd, Captain Coach : l Johnston 1912 was the first year in the clubs history and South Augusta played his first game ever against Central Augusta on the 24th may 1912 and lost that match 3.11 to 3.9. South played 8 games for the season and won 3 of these games with the 3 teams in the competition being South, Central Augusta and North. South’s colours were blue and white. South lost in the semi final to Norths 11.9 to 4.8 with the best players being a Spicer, McDonald and Howell and Central win the premiership that year 6.4 to North 3.11. Players who represented Port Augusta that year were Ralph Cilento, John Fullerton, A Withers and A Spicer. The Transcontinental paper commented that the innovation of Football had proved its worth and next season should see in consequence an improved standard of play in Port Augusta. The Secretary of the Association ( TR Brenan) who was also a South player had worked very hard for the Association and it would be gratifying to him to see that all 3 clubs were established in the town.
