  • It was a week of surprise results in A scerion, nonemore so than Old Xaverians humbling of first roundwinners Ormond, by 77 points at Yarra Park . SteveCurtain at full forward kicked 10 goals for the dayand he was well supported by Carlini with 5 goals .Terry Stanley is proving to be a more than usefulacquisition because he kicked 4 and so too did smallman . Niek Vale . Nick Wilton has struck form and thereturn of Brendan Ryan has given the Xavs a lot ofbite, as has hackman Doug Atkinson . YounPeterMetzner was voted best afield : he is a strong-playerwith agood pair of hands . The Xavs have some goodbig men and some very quick small men : it strikesme as being a side with quite a deal of versatility .Ormond were jumped early and wasted opportunitiesin the 3rd quarter. I suspect this might be an area ofconcern of Ormond . They lack real fire power upforward and rely on a number of their small andmedium sized players to kick their goals, such asrovers Tony Boyanton and Andy Mehrten. ChrisMcAsey, Gary Burke and wing!haf back RussellBarnes played well for Ormond .

Old Scotch stomed home against North Old Boysto win by 69 points . North led comfortably in thesecond quarter but Scotch fought back to lead by 9points at half time . Scotch took over in the 2nd halfand in the final term kicking with the breeze slammedon 11 goals to 3 to cruise to a big victory . Fewster,Sherwen and Thompson each kicked 4 goals forScotch . and Edwards kicked four for North . DaveBedford back from overseas was a great rover forScotch and big in an John Moir had a good day in theair. Scotch ilso got great drive from Andy Smith onthe wing and from captain Fergus Kiel at half back .For North again it was Paul Considine in the ruckwho did the hard work and backmen John Dore andJerome G ri ffin battled hard . At the end of the gameNorth coach Jim Durnan was certainly not a happyman .

De La Salle bounced back with a 50 point win ovei.Ivanhoe . De La had their running game going andIvanhoe appeared unable to handle it . The inclusionof young ruckman Nugent obviously paid dividendsas did fullforward Phil Ke ri n, who kicked 7 goalsKerin was unavailable last week . Shane Murphyfound the goals too : he got 5 . De La Salle got driveagain from centre half- back Mick Deveson andcentreman Tim Cooke . Ivanhoe's on the ball playerstried hard : Boecabella in the ruck and Balcombe andSedgwick roving and around the goals . Ivanhoe'sbest forward was Morcom who kicked 4 Qoals .

Bulleen-Templestowe found their legs on Saturda~at the expense of St. Bernards . Gilmore played wellat full back and so did captain Andy Smythe ipdefence whilst up forward Ongaro with 8 and Paceand Delanty with 5 apiece were busy forwards . ST,Bernards are a little underanned . Captain McAllisterdid well along with Sullivan and Monaghan at halfback . Dave Burgin gives the side some experiencewhich is badly needed .

Coll egians took a while to throw off a determinedUniversity Blues at Elsternwick on Sundav but neverreally looked troubled . The Blues had plenty ofpossession but the skill level in the side is not what itused to be and they are not as physically stron,-either . Collegians back line was very strong : TonyGriffiths, Greg Parsons, Andrew Wright and JeremyTwigg did not let inuch through . Russell Mann was agood player early on at centre half forward for theBlues but his opportunities were limited . Full backPat Salinger and ruckman Rob Cordwell were finecontributors on the day for the University side . GregTregear began in the centre for Collegians but wentto the forward pocket when injured and kicked 6;roals, but apart from him the Lions struggled to kic?;goals .

The conclusions from Saturday's round are these :Scotch is a good side : Bulleen-Templestowe and DeLa Salle are back : North, Ivanhoe and Ormond'sstocks need reassessing : the Old Xavs need to bewatched : Collegians are workmanlike and the Bluesand St. Bernards will staoe a good battle this week . Iwonder if I am right . ~

is per Previews Today's GamesWith 20 winners in the opening round I'm really

pleased with myself although Old Xavs and De La ofthe A Section clubs certainly upset the apple cart, Sotoo did O .M's in B section, Therry and Fawkner in C .West Brunswick and Old Mentonians in D .Elsternwick in E and finallvDoveton SJOC in F . Atleast you've all now provided It vardstick for thisweeks preview .

The match of the day will be plaed at Harry Trottbetween undefeated Collegians and reigning PremierDe La Salle . Collegians as they have in past seasonshave started well and their running game and skilfulplayers will cause De La some headaches . Jeckyl andHyde is how VAFA personality Tony O'Callaghandescribed his old clubs efforts to date but with a winunder their belt and the challenge of upsetting theLions as an added i!oal its De La on this occasion .

Another big game will be played at Yarra Parkbetween "neighbours-Old Scotch and Old Xaverians.Scoteh have two fine victories to date whilst the Xavsform compares with De Las' - cold and hot . Xavsare delighted with the form being shown byBrendanRyan and newcomer Tony Barry but for consistencvflair and new approach in 85 its Old Scotch for me .Trevor Read has them runnin, backing up and theirversatility impressed State selectors Shane Maguireand Coach Michael Green last Saturday .

Ormond and Bulleen-Templestowe clash atOrmond and the Bullant will remember the drubbingthey received in last years preliminary final . Withinjuries to Phil Mehrten and Mike Oaten Ormondwill need to call on all their pride and fighting spirit tohandle their eager visitors and at honie should hangon for It close win .

  • From Over The Fence"The Whisper" has informed OTF that umpires

advisor Neville Nash has sent all clubs a screed onabusive language . In fact The Whisper" is a handylad as he was able to obtain a copy for us and OTF hasprinted it for all .

After witnessing several practice matches it hasbecome apparent to me that the use of abusivelanguage to umpires and disputing decisions by someplayers was excessive and must be curtailed for theimage and presentation of V .A .F .A . Football andV .A .F .A . Umpires.

Therefore . I have instructed the Umpires thataction be taken against players who in "an obviousand demonstrative manner" dispute decisions and/orabuse Umpires .

A "demonstrative manner" covers giving thumbsup or two finger signs to Umpires .

In every instance . players who do this will bereported as follows :

I am reporting No . .. . . . for using insulting behaviourtoward me in that he used an insulting gesture .

In instances where players dispute decisions or useabusive language "not in a demonstrative manner"umpires are expected to talk to the player and givehim the opportunity to retract his comments . If aplayer retracts his comment the Umpire will take nofurther action . If the player continues with abuse, hewill be reported for "using abusive language towardme "

They have also been advised to bear in mind thatall players have the right to ask what a decision is for .and in all instances, the Umpire shall tell them .

The Umpires will use common sense as the objectis to discourage players from creating a scene byabusing umpires or disputing decisions . in a"demonstrative manner" .

The name of the game is COMMUNICATIONand CONFRONTATION and the Umpires aredoinatheir part by talking to the players during the game, encouraging players, but also being firm whenappropriate .

The Umpires want the respect of the players, andof course, the players want the respect of the Umpires .but it must be a combined effort and I urge yoursupport in this regard and request that you adviseyour players accordingly .

OTF noticed that 2 former amateurs, both of whomgained a big White V whilst in VAFA ranks turnedout for the VFA last Sunday . Steve Weir ( North OB)lined up for Wi lliamstown whilst Peter Yeomans wasselected as Po rt Melbou rn e's first rover - makesyou wonder doesn't it.

OTF congratulations young Ormond forwardAndrew Hill who booted 14 goals against Old BrightonUnder 19s last Saturday .
