the heart of the one-storied house is its centrally located livingroom.

the livingroom combines three privatelly located gable-roofed

house parts, where are the bedrooms and the hobbyrooms. the gable-

roofed house parts symbolize the abundance of wooden houses at

the wismari quarter and try to blend into the environment through form and facade materials. the centrally located livingroom is linked to the

terrace and garden.

the youth centre is planned to väike-õismäe, on the bank of a pond that forms with the kindergardens, schools and panel houses a circle-like courtyard. the biggest advantage to the location offer the surrounding nature, facilities and attractions for youth (stadion, ballparks, playgrounds). also the location is child-friendly - no need to cross the roads and the kindergartens and schools are situated close by. the situating of the youth center in the midst of this community carries on the atmosphere and attitude of väike-õismäe to keep within the circle. the biggest downside of the location is diffi cult access to people from further away. the building can be accessed by the walkway surrounding the pond or by taking the right turn from the circle-like courtyard.

the youth center is like the miniature model of väike-õismäe - a house that lives for its inner community. the build-ing has been built up on a tube that has been turned upside down. private rooms have been directed to the perim-eter of the house, whereas the public parts open up to the courtyard. the pri-vate rooms’ block is of constant width, only the adjacent public rooms change accordingly, thus creating pleasant seat-ing and relaxation areas. in the summer-time, it is possible to expand the areas to the terrace and the inner courtyard.

due to its important location, there is an entrance on each side of the

building. the entrance points are clearly marked with different constructions.

the central location has contributed on a larger scale to the connection of the

inner rooms to the outer surroundings. the street in between the two volumes

runs on a parallel with the adjacent service hall.

from the rooftop terrace opens a view to the council hall and on the same

level one can fi nd the restaurant. the entrance to the conference hall

is opened to the ramp located in the front of the house, whereas the

caffeteria has been located under the high-rise building.

the open part of the building has been situated between the construction

lines in a manner, that enables long and trilling views. the solid-structured construction is of a bigger scale near

the entrances and exits. the open spaces are scheduled to be more

complicated and versatile, at the same time the high-rise contrasts with its simplicity and rationality. the high-

rise is situated on a parrallel with the surrounding towers.

Kreenholm used to be the largest textile factory in Europe. It was fi nally closed in

2010 and will be redeveloped as a mixed-use district.

Joaoru has the only public beach of Narva.

A new river promenade and beachfront building

are to be built

The historical old town was razed in the WW

II and has been re-built with soviet panel housing. Recently fi n-ished Narva College building might bring

new importance to the area.

This area is the only one along the river that has been

left without attention

Geopolitically Narva is located in a very good position. Narva is the 3rd largest city in Estonia and it is closer to St. Petersburg (6th largest city in Europe) than to Tallinn. If the EU - Russian visa regime would loosen, there is a huge possibility for growth.

Since the city was destroyed in the WW II, most of the building pool consists of large panel system buildings that were constructed during the Soviet Union. Hence the living environment tends to be very monotone and unfriendly.

The onionskin The perimeter buildings along the western side are extended around the whole area. This allows for freer planning inside the quartier.

riverpromenade The promenade is extended until the Kreenholmi area as a pedestri-an street next to the buildings. The promenade forms different sections along the way.

public functions The plan proposes places for new public buildings and ways to rede-velop buildings that do not have a function today.

height of the buildings The new building will have 1-12 fl oors. At the moment the buildings have 1-8 fl oors.

teeth of the comb The paths towards the river are emphasized. Accordingly, the north-south movement is restricted to lead people to the river promenade.

roads The new road network will direct the citywide traffi c away from the quartier and form two loops that still allow access to the river.

parametrical design ws II

renee puuseppkerstin kivila, riin kersalu taavi lõoke2012/13

the aim of this one week workshop was to give an introduction to paramet-ric design and digital moddeling in parrallel with physical proto-typing. the task was to design a pavilion-like structure. working with grasshopper in rhinocer-os 5 we had to arrive at a fabricated paperboard model at the end of the workshop

mapping straight lines to double-curved surface is diffi cult because the lines unroll to a curve. to be able to construct a model, geodetic lines, that take the curvature of the surface into account and unroll into a straight lines, had to be calculated

staright lines projected onto surface staright lines projected onto surface

geodetic lines from all the support

concept

grid formula

control the structure

geodetic lines from all the support

line transformed into geodesic lines line transformed into geodesic lines

usually gridshells are made with orthogonal lattice. as a consequence it only allows for structures with 4 cornes. we envisioned a grid that would make for a 5 corner structure and decided to try the version with ribs radiating from the supports.
