What do you need in order to build the best Strandkörbe in Germany? At least 42 km of beach, an annual dose of some 1,900 hours of sun, a good deal of wind and changeable weather, and around 150,000 sun starved bathers who would never in their life think of a day on the beach without a Strandkorb. If these circumstances are right on your doorstep, then the only thing to do is create the right business – manufacturing Strandkörbe.

This is exactly what Carl Martin Hader did in 1925 when he founded Germany’s oldest Strandkorb company that has been located in Kasierbad Heringsdorf since 1933. In contrast to the Kaiser, our company has survived all the storms since then and we are now profi ting from 90 years of making the traditional German Strand-korb. The moody weather, the beach goers, and the delight of traditional crafts-manship are the sources of our quality and new ideas.

A Korbwerk Strandkorb is a stable varnished wooden frame construction with additional stability provided by galvanized metal rods and hinges.

It doesn’t matter on which beach you are whiling away the hours in your Strand-korb, the fact is you are probably enjoying yourself in a “real Heringsdorfer”. The quality of a Korbwerk chair has proven itself from island to island – Juist, Amrum, Sylt and Rügen. Every year our carpenters, upholsters, and wickerworkers construct and finish over 4,000 units of the highest hand-made quality.

The mark of an original Heringsdorfer is the reinforced wood and metal frame. The hood itself is stabilized with six galvanized metal rods allowing it to stand up to even the most demanding of coastal conditions. We build our chairs from local pine, African iroko and Asian teak woods. For the wickerwork we use weather resistant PE or PVC or more traditional natural materials such as rattan split, straw, or boondoot. After 50 hours of careful work our Strandkörbe are ready for duty.

Our Strandkörbe are as individual as our customers. Our designers buy on international markets and place great value on the highest of quality. We only use outdoor textiles that can handle most of what nature can throw at us. Our teflon-coated, UV-stable, water- and dirt-repellant acrylic yarns maintain their colours longer. For maximum protection we offer PVC-coated textiles: perfect for commercial uses on beaches, swimming pools, and for restaurants and bars.

The newest discovery from Heringsdorf was the brainchild of a Sylt restaurant owner who wanted to offer his guests the chance to enjoy eating outside on cool and windy days. It is no surprise that commercial Strandkorb vendors on Sylt always refer to the quality and stability of a Heringsdorfer. We only use well-seasoned non-laminated and knot-free woods which are carefully selected and treated. As an environmen-tally responsible business we primarily use local pine woods and if we do use high grade wood such as teak or iroko then will be FSC certified.

We can also paint your Strandkorb with every RAL-colour code. We first prime the wood and then give it several coats of paint. Don’t forget to give us your RAL code with your order.

Apparently there are sun worshipers who believe that a Strandkorb without stripes is not a Strandkorb. Not surprising really, because stripes have been part of the beach scene from Borkum to Sylt for over a century. A striped Strandkorb is, and will always be, a classic. You can’t go wrong by choosing this style. Combine some stripes with a single colour for hood interior and you chair will be special. Have fun!
