France & US: Eliokem – styrene butadiene resins Eliokem was established in 2001, when Goodyear hived off its speciality chemicals operations in France, the US and China. The Pliolite styrene butadiene (SBR) resins business was included in these operations. Eliokem recently declared its commitment to raising capacity for Pliolite-S5 resins at its Le Havre (France) and Akron, Ohio (US) plants. Pliolite-S5 resins are mainly used for clear and pigmented masonry and concrete coatings, known as crépis. They are also used for electrographic toners, marine paints, and road-marking paints. The company notes that this will make it more efficient to produce samples for European designers to evaluate options in new colour and special effect pigments. It is not clear whether the proposed increase in synrutile capacity will be accompanied by an expansion in the company’s supply of Utox, a proprietary buff- coloured TiO 2 pigment based on finely milled synrutile. DCW is also converting its chloralkali facilities from mercury-cell to membrane technology. For the year to end-March 2005, DCW declared a net profit of Rup 210.2 M on sales of Rup 7696.7 M. That compares against Rup 213.8 M on sales of Rup 6913.6 M for the year to end-March 2004. Business Line, 30 Jun 2005, 12 (180), 3 India: Stork – TiO 2 feedstock Stork Handelsgesellschaft mbH (of Linz, Austria) plans to mine titanium minerals in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh province. In the first phase of this project, the company will invest about $200 M to bring the mine into production. In the second phase, Stork plans to invest about $800 M to establish value-added facilities, which may include facilities for making titanium metal or pigments. Stork is already well-known as one of the major sales agents for ilmenite and rutile produced by the Volnogorsk combine in the Ukraine. Stork also sells titanium metal products from various Russian sources. Chemical Engineering World, May 2005, 40 (5), 30 Japan: Merck – pearlescents As foreshadowed in ‘Focus on Pigments’, Nov 2004, 5, Merck has formally committed itself to building a third line for making Xirallic pearlescent pigments at its Onahama plant. The new line should be ready for operations in early 2006. Xirallic pigments are based on high-purity alumina flakes. The range now consists of about 10 different colours. Total world sales of Xirallic pigments are currently of the order of Yen 5 bn per annum to customers in the plastics and automotive paint industries. Japan Chemical Week, 9 Jun 2005, 46 (2321), 3 Mexico: Ampacet – masterbatch Ampacet has broken ground at the construction site earmarked for a new colour masterbatch plant at Queretaro (about 190 km northwest of Mexico City). The floor area of the new plant will be about 3700 square metres. It will contain multiple twin-screw extruder lines, a blending station and a colour service and development centre. The plant should be ready for operation by the end of 2005. Mr Doug Brownfield (Strategic Business Manager) said: “The new plant will support our broad base of business in Mexico, which we currently serve from the US and South America. We sited the new facility in Queretaro because this region is a centre for plastics manufacturing and many of our customers will be within easy reach of the plant. The new plant and the colour lab here will be structured for quick turnaround times and greater speed to market, both of which are vital to the packaging sector.” Ampacet claims to be the world’s largest volume masterbatch supplier, offering the broadest range of colour, black, white, special effect and speciality additive masterbatches. The Ampacet group (headquartered in Tarrytown, NY) was founded in 1937 and nowadays employs more than 1400 people. Its global annual revenues exceed $625 M. The plant is operated by Developed Technologies Ltd. Cestisa also operates plants at Barcelona (Spain), Garden Grove, California (US) and New Delhi (India). Its metallic pigments offer iridescent, holographic or glimmer effects and they are marketed under the brandnames Zarinex, Starmist, Stardust, Danny and Sona.
