Enter Georgia And Stay For a Year

Visa-FreeGeorgia has revealed more details of the country’s new visa regulations

and announced which countries do not need a visa to enter Georgia and stay here for 360 days

Under the new rules, which were already adopted, citizens from 94 countries can enter Georgia and stay for a maximum of 360 days.

This decision was a revision of the Georgian Government’s earlier decision, which said citizens from these 94 countries were able to enter Georgia without a visa however they could only stay for a maximum of 90 days in a 180 day period. This law came into effect in September 1, 2014.

Back then, people who wished to spend time in Georgia longer than the 90 day allocated period had to apply for a Georgian visa from a Georgian Embassy or Consulate in a person’s home country. Or if the person was already in Georgia, they could apply for an appropriate visa from the Public Service Hall.

Meanwhile, when planning a longer visit to Georgia all citizens were required to obtain an immigration visa, regardless of nationality. But according to the new change, citizens from the selected 94 countries do not need a short-term visa or an immigration visa to enter and stay in Georgia for a year.

Meanwhile under the new regulations, citizens of European Union (EU) member states may enter Georgia with a travel document as well as with an ID card that is issued by an EU member state and contains the person’s name, surname, date of birth and a photo.

Entering Georgia and staying for 360 days is also possible for citizens who hold a United Nations (UN) Laissez-Passer, a travel document issued by the UN or its specialised agencies.

Georgia pure wine countryWine lovers have a lot to thank Georgia for. It is widely believed that this is where wine production first began, over 7000 years ago. In fact, our word “wine” is derived from “gvino” – the Georgian word for wine. Archaeological remains suggest that as early as 4000 BC grape juice was being placed in underground clay jars, or quevri (also known as kvevri), to ferment during the winter.

The vine is central to Georgian culture and tightly bound to their religious heritage. It is common for families throughout Georgia to grow their own grapes and produce wine. Feasting and hospitality are central pillars of Georgian culture, and traditional banquets are presided over by a toastmaster, or Tamada, who proposes numerous toasts throughout the meal, and ensures the wine flows liberally.

Georgia is a land famed for its natural bounty. These days there are over 500 species of grape in Georgia, a greater diversity than anywhere else in the world, with around 40 of these grape varieties being used in commercial wine production. Conditions are well suited for viticulture: summers are rarely excessively hot, winters are mild and frost-free. In addition, the mountains around the vineyards are full of natural springs, and rivers drain mineral-rich waters into the valleys. All this means that Georgian wines have a reputation for being exceptionally pure.

Around 150 million litres of wine are produced each year in Georgia, with around 45 000 hectares of

vineyards under cultivation. There are 18 Specific Viticulture Areas (a local analogy of the Controlled Appellations of Origin) where the grape variety, planting density and yield per hectare is controlled by Ministry of Agriculture, and where the grape yield per hectare is limited to 8 tons.

Georgia’s wines fall into several zones: Kakheti and Kartli in the east, and Imereti, Samegrelo, Guria, Ajaria, and Abkhazia in the west. By far the most important of these is Kakheti, which produces 70% of all Georgian wine.

As interest in natural and artisan wine making increases, a great deal of attention has recently been falling on Georgia’s ancient tradition of quevri wine-making. This method of wine-making dates back over 7000 years, and the Georgians are currently seeking to give it special protected heritage status through UNESCO. Quevris are not the same as amphora – firstly, they are much larger, and are buried in the ground up their neck, to preserve a stable temperature.

Secondly, the entire wine making process takes place within the quevri – initial fermentation right through to maturation, with the fermenting grape juice often being left on the skins and even grape stems to produce wines of exceptional flavour and complexity. Quevris are used differently in different areas of Georgia, often depending on the climate of the region.

As the regions get hotter the more skins and stems tend to be fermented with the grapes – if stems were left in the wine in the cooler regions it would produce wines that were far too “green” and harsh.

One of Georgia’s other great wine making traditions, which one cannot help noticing when coming across these wines for the first time, is its semi sweet wines, which appear in both red and white varieties. The Georgian Wine Society stocks a number of these wines, including the famous Kindzmarauli, the less well known but highly regarded varieties of Ojaleshi and Pirosmani, and the magisterial Khvanchkara, the favourite wine of one of Georgia’s most infamous sons, Joseph Stalin.

Traditionally, medium sweet wines were produced in the mountainous areas where, due to climate and soil conditions, late harvest and early winter prevented fermentation and the wine stayed sweet. This type of wine was therefore generally used for local and quick consumption, because in spring, when the temperature rose, the wines tended to re-ferment and spoil. Nowadays, famous Georgian semi-sweet wines such as Kindzmarauli and Khvanchkara tend to be created within temperature controlled fermentation

tanks at the winery to preserve their higher sugar content.

filled with melted cheese and topped with a runny egg, this flatbread is best eaten hot—tear off the crust

and dunk it in the well of cheese and egg.

InstructionsCombine yeast, sugar, and 2⁄3 cup water heated to 115° in a bowl; let stand until foamy, about 10 minutes. Add oil, flour, and salt; mix with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl and cover loosely with plastic wrap; set in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.

Place a pizza stone on a rack in lower third of oven. Heat oven to 500° for 1 hour. Combine cheeses in a bowl; set aside. Punch down dough and divide in half. On a piece of lightly floured parchment paper, roll half of dough into a 10” circle about 1⁄8” thick. Spread a quarter of the cheese mixture over dough, leaving a 1⁄2” border. On one side of the circle, tightly roll dough about a third of the way toward the center. Repeat on the opposite end. There should be a 2”-3” space between the two rolls. Pinch the open ends of the rolls together and twist to seal, making a boat shape; place another quarter of the cheese mixture in the middle; repeat with remaining dough and cheese. Transfer boats on paper to stone; bake until golden brown, 14–16 minutes. Crack 1 egg into the center of each boat. Return to oven until egg white is slightly set, 3–4 minutes. Place 2 tbsp. butter on each bread; serve hot.

Tbilisi International Airport

Located about 17,5 kilometres East of Tbilisi centre. The main terminal was built in 2007 and provides good passenger services. There are number of bars, restaurants, travel agencies, ATMs, currency exchanges, VIP and CIP zones. International and domestic (Mestia) flights operate from here. Getting to town If you rent a car at the airport, the route is well signposted until you enter the city, after that signage is more rare. Follow by signs Rustaveli Av. or Freedom square if you want to reach the centre. The cheapest way to get to the city centre is to take bus # 37 to Freedom square and Rustaveli Av. and back to the airport. The journey takes about 30 - 40 minutes. The bus stop is just in front of the arrival hall and they run every 20-30 minutes. Only coins are accepted and a single ticket costs 0.50 Lari.

You can change notes into coins at the tourist information located in arrival hall. These buses operate from 07:00 until 22:00, which is not very helpful if you flight is one of the many that land during the night. A new train station is located only two minutes walk from the terminal. The journey to the main train station, where you can transfer to the metro system, takes 35 minutes and costs 0.50 Lari, but the timetable is very poor. TaxiTaxis are a cheap and are an easy way to get around the city. Most trips within Tbilisi range from three to six Lari. Some taxis carry metres with fixed rates, but not all. Agree the price before you get in. Haggle with them, they will probably start with a high price if you are a foreigner.

Car RentalFor some visitors, driving in Tbilisi can be a daunting experience. On the face of it, Georgians don’t seem the most disciplined motorists. Driving speeds are often fast and lane changes can be erratic. At rush-hour the experience is further intensified by heavy city traffic. The speed limit is 60 km/h in owns and cities. In other areas it’s 80 km/h unless indicated. Highways speed limit is 100 km/h, unless other is indicated on the screens along the road. All road signs and screens are in English. There is a zero tolerance policy towards drink driving and your seat belt must be locked.

BusesThe buses are yellow and each displays its route number on the front. Many bus stops have an automated sign-board showing which service is due next and how long until it arrives. You need to pay when you board at the machine inside the bus with coins, or touch your plastic pre-loaded Metromani travel card. Each journey nywhere in the city costs 50 tetri. Charge your Metromani card at a Metro station.

MinibusesCalled marshrutkas, they operate on established routes. In the city they are yellow. Find out the number of the one you want to take and flag one down by holding out your hand, palm facing down. You can get them to stop where you want. Each journey is 80 tetri. You can pay with cash or pre-loaded Metromani card when you exit. There are also a few marshrutka stations around the city for travel around Georgia. Their destination is displayed on a board in the window, but it will be written in Georgian. Just ask if you are unsure which one is heading your way. In general, Didube services the west and north of Georgia, Samgori the east, Ortachala is for international routes to Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Agree the price before you leave - check with the locals.
