School of Business Administration
REPORT OF THE ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE
Academic Year
2010-2011
Prepared by:
Dr. Liz Wilson
Dean of the School of Business
And the faculty members of the College of Business Administration
Purpose of the Report
During the academic year 2010-2011, the Assessment Committee concentrated in
two main issues:
1) To verify that we keep the commitment of continuous improvement in our learning
objectives, and
2) To report the result of the assessed learning goals during this academic year.
Actions during the academic year 2010-2011
1. Standardization of the all SOBA syllabi and the inclusion of optional information
as required.
2. Stronger collaboration inside the SOBA committees and the better flow of
information.
3. The requirement of virtual office hours for professors teaching online courses.
4. Keep the SOBA webpage up to date.
5. Based on previous year results, some specific classes delayed the assessment for a
couple of weeks to let the students digest the new concepts and then apply the
assessment. This increased the overall score for that learning goal.
Results for the Academic Year 2010 – 2011
The results were submitted and evaluated by the assessment committee. The targets
are as follow:
At least 80% of the students should meet or exceed the goal. Computing the
average for each student for all the items considered in assessing the goal (the
range for this number is between 1 and 3):
o If the average is lower than 2 then the student is considered as “Fail”.
o Between 2 and below 2.5 is considered as “Meet”,
o And between 2.5 and 3, the score is considered as “Exceed”.
The total average for each item for the goal should be at least 2.0
The overall score for the goal has to be at least 2.0

UNDERGRADUATE RESULTS
The main concern, based on the assessed learning outcomes, is the evidence that
some online classes were below the corresponding online score. That may be influenced
by the way we teach these courses. This is the first year that this report differentiates the
learning modalities.
Recommendations:
1. Keep working in the way we teach online courses
a. Offer internal training.
b. Increase teacher-student interaction
c. Promote group/collaborative activities among students
d. Include other learning tools such as podcasts, external videos, or activities
beyond reading the book.
2. Revise that course learning objectives are aligned with the School’s learning
objectives. Standardize the learning objectives and topics covered for classes
taught by different professors.
3. Suggest the adoption of books that are focused on distance learning students and
provide material that can be used to assure the complete understanding of the
material even when the student-professor interaction is limited.
4. Invest in technology to maintain our teaching standards.
5. Provide orientation to teach online courses for new faculty before the semester
starts.
6. Provide processes and procedures that faculty can follow (such as how to
download podcasts) and be more independent on expertise advising.
7. Put more emphasis on written assignments and teamwork.
8. Be consistent in the learning outcomes between the online and in-class courses.
9. Open a communication channel with students to know their opinion to be more
effective in the learning process.
10. Develop best practices for online courses plus the implementation of evaluation
tools for assessing online classes.
11. Specific to ECON 2105, talk with the professor to identify the reasons for the
poor performance in this class and try to adopt the same practice that other
professor did to increase the score by delaying the assessment some time, such
that students can digest and understand the new concepts.
GRADUATE RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
For the graduate assessment, results show that all the learning outcomes assessed
meet or exceed the School of Business expectations. The only recommendation that is
proposed is to keep working in increasing the level of the graduate courses and keep
assessing the learning outcomes to take actions in the event that something drops below
the expectations.

this report, but can be found in the S drive.
