About the PERG

The Professional Education & Resource Guide is an easy reference for continuing education opportunities for massage therapists and bodyworkers.

The PERG offers a variety of ways to select courses that meet your continuing education needs. Browse the pages of advertisements to discover opportunities to enhance your skills and explore new and exciting theories and approaches. Or look up the dates you are available to take classes in the index at the back of the guide and choose from among those listings.

The Georgia Edition of the PERG is mailed free of charge to licensed massage therapists and bodyworkers, so keep your address up to date with your state massage board to ensure you receive each and every copy.

The Professional Education & Resource Guide is published twice per year in North Carolina and South Carolina. It is also published less frequently in Georgia and Tennessee.

At www.PERG-CEMassage.com you can view all the current editions of the PERG in fl ip-book form, as well as a chronological list of advertised classes with links to webpage descriptions and email contact information.

NEXT ISSUE JULY 2014

Dear Colleagues,

The landscape of massage organizations is, as always, shifting and changing. And these shifts can and do affect you, the individual massage therapist or licensed bodyworker. Most recently we have seen a migration of emphasis away from the National Certifi cation Board and towards individual state boards and their membership organization, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. This shift has come about because of a concern about differences between certifi cation and licensing.

Both licensure and certifi cation set standards for education and demonstrated accomplishment in the profession. State boards engage in licensing and are charged with protecting the public by enforcing the laws and rules and regulations of the massage/bodywork professions in each state. Certifi cation is a third-party credential and can be bestowed by any established organization. The value of the certifi cation is determined primarily through tradition.

“Certifi cation does not refer to the state of legally being able to practice or work in a profession. That is licensure. Usually, licensure is administered by a governmental entity for public protection purposes and a professional association administers certifi cation. Licensure and certifi cation are similar in that they both require the demonstration of a certain level of knowledge or ability.” [From Wikipedia]

Presently the National Certifi cation Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork has raised the bar on standards for their certifi cation of massage therapists and bodyworkers. The new Board Certifi cation Credential is voluntary in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, and has different requirements for renewal than does state license renewal. For example, NCBTMB Board Certifi cation renewal will only accept a maximum of 4 CEs earned in the self-care category of CE classes, but licensure renewal in North Carolina does not currently limit the number of CEs in self-care they will accept for license renewal. Each state has its own differences from the national certifi cation requirements. You can review the requirements on the NCBTMB website and on your state board website so you don’t get caught short at renewal time.

Another credential bestowed by the NCBTMB is that of Approved Continuing Education Provider. At this time the state boards in states where the PERG is published all accept CE classes taught by NCBTMB Approved Providers. However, it will be your responsibility to be aware of content limitations, as well as live versus distance learning class limitations, when choosing CE classes that you plan to submit for meeting your renewal CE requirements.

With best wishes for a rewarding year of learning,

Nancy Toner Weinberger, Publisher

Lumbopelvic Hip Complex (LPHC) or Cervicobrachial Complex (CBC) Presented by Bruce Costello MA, LMT, NMT, DC, CPT, CES

Pain is Complex, Posture holds an Answer, Proprioception is Key

These courses explain the complexity of pain and how sensors within the myofascia interact and contribute to pain in the body. Following neurological principles and empirical research you will learn to treat the causes of myofascial pain. Efficient and effective movement is the result of highly specific coordination of muscles, joints and proprioceptors. Painful movement or postures that result in discomfort can be retrained with the corrective bodywork system. Knowledge is power as you learn the patterns of neuromuscular imbalance and therapeutic skills to bring them back into balance. This is a hands-on class with many pearls of wisdom. Dr. Bruce Costello is approved by the NCBTMB as a continuing education Approved Provider # 451122-09.
