“Learning is not a product of schooling but the life-long attempt to acquire it..” Albert Einstein

Dear Carver Parents and Students,

Again, for the entire Carver Family, this school year brings the expectation of maintaining

our fine academic tradition. At Carver, our curriculum and instruction is in line with the mission of

the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP). That mission, “…to develop

inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful

world through intercultural understanding and respect” guides our current academic focus and pre-

sents many opportunities for our instructors to address international studies throughout all content

areas of instruction. Our ultimate goal is to develop students that will eventually become global citi-

zens that are prepared to use their knowledge, skills, talents, and intercultural awareness to make

their contributions to this world.

Carver Middle School is a community; and, like all other communities, its members must share the

responsibility of our vision. Our continued success depends on parents, faculty, staff, and students

contributing and giving their personal best on a daily basis. I encourage every parent to stay in-

volved during his or her student’s three years at Carver Middle School. Middle school can be chal-

lenging for most students as it is a time for emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development.

It is of the utmost importance that our students know that we are there for them as they struggle to

find their place in a setting where “the sense of belonging and friendship” becomes a primary focus.

Some students may struggle to manage a demanding academic, athletic, family, and/or extra-

curricular schedule. Every student will need parents to be firm and insist that a minimum of ninety

minutes be devoted to study and homework during each school week.

This year, to date, six new faculty members have joined the Carver family. Mr. Mark Burchette will

be teaching 6th-grade Social Studies; Mr. B. Cory Williams will be teaching 7th-grade Social Studies;

Mrs. Kristine Lovely will be our Special Education teacher; Mrs. Robin Emerson will be Carver’s and

Booker T. Washington’s shared Staff Development Teacher; Ms. Teresa Davis will be teaching 6th-

grade math; and, Mrs. Kathleen Jeffries will be the 7th-grade counselor.

As always, at Carver, we have an open door policy. Please feel free to call the school for any assis-

tance or information that you may need. Carver is your school and your support and involvement are

critical to our continued success.

Sincerely,

Melissa J. Woolridge, Ph.D. Principal, George Washington Carver Middle School

What’s a TM? Why should I care?

The Time Management Book TM is a required tool for students at Carver, and can be purchased at school for $5.00.

The TM is designed to help students be successful in school. Successful students use their TM books EVERYDAY at

list students’ homework assignments, but it also has the school calendar, the uniform code, school policies, im-

portant quotes and learning ideas AND serves as a hall pass! Quite the versatile publication! Please read the expec-

tations below to understand Carver’s TM objectives:

HOW CAN PARENTS USE THE TM?

Show your child how to set goals

check the information in front of the TM

Show your child how to manage time

check the information in front of the TM

Show your child how to enter an assignment in the TM, with

its due date.

Encourage your child to check off a task when it has been

completed

Rebecca Ungerman’s Spinning Plates Productions Opens Doors and Flies to the Tiberias International

Theater Festival Community Fundraiser/Performance

August 13, 2012

Carver Alumni and Tulsa People Magazine’s Favorite Stage Performer, Rebecca Ungerman, has been invited to the Tiberias International Theater Festival. Now, in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of Tulsa and the Tulsa Global Alliance, Rebecca is putting together a concert to fund Spinning Plates Production’s (SPP) participation in the 2nd annual Tiberias International Theater Festival in Israel. SPP will present “The Unwitting Wife”, penned by Ungerman and fellow Tulsa talent, Lisa Cole (music & lyrics by Ungerman and friends.) While this is an original story, the fifteen original tunes span Ungerman’s twenty-five year catalog as a songwriter, including five new works written specifically for the show. The performance will take place on Monday, August 13 in the Sylvan Auditorium at the Charles Schusterman Jewish Community Center. To attend the community performance/fundraiser please contact the Jewish Federation of Tulsa at 918.495.1100 or [email protected].

The deadline for submission to the ROAR is the 20th of the month for publishing in the following month’s issue.

TPS announced today that it will proceed with an “early release” day on the last Friday of every month, beginning Friday, September 28, 2012, pending board approval. Early release is being implemented on a district-wide basis to enable teachers, staff and administrators to have additional time to engage in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), where effective teaching methods and techniques can be studied and shared.

At elementary schools, students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. on the last Friday of the month; middle school students will leave school at 1:20 p.m. and high school students at 1:50 p.m. Students will be served lunch prior to dismissal. School start times will remain as they are current-ly. Buses will run at the release time. No child care will be provided on “early release” Fridays unless the school already offers after-school care. There will be no early release in December 2012 or in May 2013. The dates for early release for the 2012-13 school year are as follows: “We are excited at the opportunity to be able to give our teachers and principals more time together, as this will help put TPS on the road to improved student

achievement,” said Dr. Keith Ballard, Superintendent. “We are also pleased that we can make the change to early release on ‘last Fridays’ without having to add additional days to the school calendar. A final recommendation will be made to the TPS board on August 6 and we expect to implement this plan pending their

approval. Our thanks go out to the supportive parents, teachers and school administrators who favor this plan.”

When surveyed in June, 70 percent of the more than 1,300 parents and teachers were supportive of a monthly early release day. Friday was the preferred day of the week by 66 percent of those who responded. The survey was conducted from June 20 – 24, 2012. About 67 percent of participants were parents, 31.5 per-cent were teachers, 2.3 percent TPS administrators and 9.3 percent “other.”

SCHOOL START/STOP TIMES (8:45 a.m.—3:50 p.m.)

Question: What time should we arrive?

Answer: 8:35 a.m.

Question: What time do classes start?

Answer: 8:45 a.m.

Question: When is the school day over?

Answer: 3:50 p.m.

Question: What about the after school pick up procedure:

Answer: Students that walk to school may walk home. If parents pick students up, then the student should wait

on the sectioned-off concrete area outside of the main entrance; or, the student may walk around the bus loop

and meet their parent on the parking lot north of the main entrance. Due to safety concerns, students are not

permitted to cross through the bus loop area. Students that ride the bus to school should plan to ride the same

bus home. New students are encouraged to write their bus route and number on their notebooks and have it

available as a reminder after school.

Students MUST cross the street at the corner. Passenger car traffic driving or parking on the bus loop is

NOT permitted from 8:15 a.m.—9:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
